'Very intense' – Marcus Rashford admits to enduring 'difficult' pre-season at Barcelona as he adjusts to Hansi Flick's 'complex' training routine

Marcus Rashford has admitted to enduring a "difficult" pre-season at Barcelona after his loan move from Manchester United. The 26-year-old forward, who joined the La Liga champions after falling out of favour at Old Trafford, has described Barca head coach Hansi Flick's training routine as "very intense".

Rashford is finding out just how relentless the pace can be at a club obsessed with intensity and precision. Speaking candidly about his early weeks with Barca, the forward admitted he has struggled to adapt to Flick’s “very intense” methods, particularly during a sweltering tour of Asia.

Speaking on , Rashford said: "Here, it is very intense. It is difficult to explain, but the pre-season has been difficult; I was tired after every workout, and the weather also played a role. Running is not difficult; it is more about practising with the ball and maintaining a consistent level. In this sense, the intensity is more complex."

THE BIGGER PICTURE

Despite the exhausting workload, Rashford insists the experience has been invigorating. The chance to share the pitch with some of Europe’s most gifted young stars, including Spanish sensation Pedri, has been a source of real joy.

"Honestly, it is very refreshing to be able to play with these players and play football at their own tempo [rhythm] like Pedri, who I think is only 22 or 23 years old," he said. "I hope to have a good individual season, but if I have to choose between that and winning titles, choose to win titles."

DID YOU KNOW?

However, Rashford’s immediate future on the pitch is far from certain. Barcelona president Joan Laporta has sounded the alarm over the possibility that the loanee may not be registered in time for the club’s La Liga opener against Mallorca on August 16.

Laporta said: "We're working to make it happen. With Marc-Andre ter Stegen's decision, we have the option of registering Joan Garcia, and we're working on the rest. This week, we'll have news, hopefully good news, to see if we can register them before La Liga starts. And if we can't, we have time."

All hope not yet lost, but Australia have their backs against the wall

After losing T20I series to Bangladesh and WI earlier this year, Australia now need to beat both teams

Andrew McGlashan31-Oct-2021What a difference a day makes. Such was the brutality of the defeat handed out to Australia by England that they have gone from being strongly placed to secure a semi-final slot to not even knowing if two wins in their last two matches will now be enough. If Justin Langer and Aaron Finch had thought that emerging from an unconvincing build-up to the tournament with the wins over South Africa (scrappy) and Sri Lanka (convincing) would alter narratives, then it’s been a rude awakening.Social media has been lively. Shane Warne said Steven Smith shouldn’t be in the T20 side before the game. After then expressing his bemusement at how Liam Livingstone was allowed to bowl four overs for 15, he later added: “Australia need to change their thinking re style of play plus the team.”Elsewhere there were top-orders being selected that had little resemblance to the one that played last night. It was a very good few hours not to be in the team. A lot of it is very valid. Australia’s relationship with T20 cricket has rarely been anything but awkward. For a nation of such rich cricketing success, to be left referencing an appearance in the 2010 final and a brief spell at No. 1 in the rankings last year is slim pickings. But they aren’t done yet for this tournament so the full post-mortem needs to wait a little longer. Two wins will take them into the semi-finals unless England slip up. However, if it does prove to be a group exit then the assessments and questions need to be as brutal as Jos Buttler’s innings. A semi-final might keep the wolf from the door, but that may not be a good thing – England’s evolution into a white-ball powerhouse happened when they were embarrassed into change after the 2015 World Cup. It would take a brave person to pick Australia as a winner although stranger things have happened.”If you went back to previous T20 World Cups and teams being in this position then getting their way out of it, it’s definitely happened before and we have a really quality team,” Adam Zampa said. “The result could have been different last night. Think you would have seen our quicks get a similar amount of movement out of that wicket, but they exposed us really well with the new ball. It was a pretty clinical win from England.”We’ll move on pretty quickly, we know the pressure is on us now, our run-rate has taken a hit so winning the next two games is really important but the next moment is more important than anything else so we’ll concentrate on Bangladesh.”Australia have seen plenty in recent times of Bangladesh and West Indies, falling to 4-1 series defeats against both earlier this year with a team that was significantly different to the one at this tournament particularly in the batting. If West Indies build on their narrow win over Bangladesh which kept their chances alive, there is a scenario where the Australia match is a decider. In terms of the low-scoring scrap that played out in Bangladesh during August, where 120 was a huge total, Zampa did not believe much can be read into it. “The wicket in Dhaka was probably one the worst international wickets we’ve come up against, particularly in my time. Don’t think we’ll see a wicket that bad over here,” he said.”We are pretty wary of what they can do, they have some really good young players and some great experience with guys like Shakib who can win a game off his own bat. We’ll use whatever intel we have from the last series but this game will be a different look. If we go and play really well against Bangladesh we’ve won three out of four games going into the last one with some confidence again.”Tactically, we have now seen the two team make-ups Australia have: the choice between four and five specialist bowlers. Having gone batter-heavy in the two wins, Ashton Agar replaced Mitchell Marsh against England. It’s debatable whether having Marsh would have made a difference – Chris Woakes would have troubled anyone – although an extra batter might have given Aaron Finch more confidence to try and hit his way out of the hole. Now do they stick or twist again? Once Covid-19 had ripped up some best-laid plans of building towards a home World Cup (which will now be next year) there has been an element of hoping it will be alright on the night. For a couple of games it appeared as though it could come together. There’s a chance it still can, but they can’t afford another night like they’ve just had.

'Hoping all the other Mexican clubs lose' – Domènec Torrent criticizes Leagues Cup format, Sergio Ramos delivers harsh message after Monterrey’s 3-2 loss

    WHAT HAPPENED?

Following Monterrey’s defeat in their opening game of Leagues Cup – a 3-2 loss on the road against FC Cincinnati – captain Sergio Ramos delivered a blunt message to fans on social media, suggesting the defeat leaves the Mexican side with slim chances of advancing to the next round of the Leagues Cup.

“Disappointed to start the Leagues Cup this way. We need to analyze, improve and bounce back with a strong performance on Sunday. Football always gives you new chances. Let’s go all in!” Ramos posted on social media.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

The start of the Leagues Cup hasn’t been ideal for Liga MX clubs – especially for heavyweights such as América, Cruz Azul, Chivas, and Monterrey. Despite boasting one of the tournament’s strongest squads, Monterrey fell to Cincinnati, severely denting their hopes of advancing to the next round.

    WHAT DOMÈNEC TORRENT SAID

Spanish coach Domènec Torrent strongly criticized the Leagues Cup format following Monterrey’s defeat.

"Maybe we’re already out – they’ve put together such a strange competition, where you lose one game and you’re practically eliminated," he said. "It’s a tournament where you’re hoping all the other Mexican clubs lose too, because you’re competing against them. I’m not going to complain, but out of 18 teams, only four qualify – 14 get eliminated. One loss punishes you too much."

    WHAT NEXT FOR MONTERREY?

Monterrey will now have to assert themselves against a New York Red Bulls side that already dealt Chivas a defeat in their Leagues Cup opener. The two teams play Sunday.

Sears and O'Rourke included in New Zealand's Champions Trophy squad

Mitchell Santner will captain a global event for the first time with the side playing a tri-series in Pakistan as a warm-up

ESPNcricinfo staff12-Jan-2025Fast bowlers Ben Sears and Will O’Rourke have been included in New Zealand’s squad for the Champions Trophy alongside allrounder Nathan Smith.Sears, who was a travelling reserve for the T20 World Cup last year, recently played his first game since April having returned in the Super Smash following injury and is in line for his ODI debut having played one Test and 17 T20Is. O’Rourke has impressed across formats early in his international career and has been especially eye-catching in Tests.Smith, meanwhile, will bring lower-order power with the bat and bustling seam bowling.Head coach Gary Stead said Sears had been in New Zealand’s Champions Trophy plans all along, with his pace through the air seen as a clinching factor on pitches in Pakistan.Related

“We’ve been a little conservative in Ben’s return to play, but we always had an eye that we thought he would be part of this Champions Trophy squad,” Stead said. “He’s one of those guys, when you look at places like Pakistan, that pure speed is something that you’re looking for, and he certainly has that. A young tearaway is always nice to see, and very excited to have him in the squad.”Stead was confident Sears would hold up fine, match-fitness-wise, after his return from injury.”Ben’s been bowling a lot over the winter still,” he said. “He’s been in and around our Test squads before he had that injury, so we’re very confident that he will be where he needs to be.”ESPNcricinfo Ltd

With Sears, O’Rourke and Smith included, there was no place in the main squad for Jacob Duffy, who is coming off a breakthrough season in international white-ball cricket.”It’s a tough decision,” Stead said. “Jacob Duffy has been probably the one that people would say is hard done by. He’s been very very good in what he’s played for us. I think the way to look at it, though, is that if some of these guys, perhaps like a Lockie Ferguson, were available, Jacob Duffy may not have got the opportunity, so for us it’s a real positive story that although Jake’s missed [out], it’s still positive that we’re growing that depth long-term for our team.”

Ferguson, Williamson and Conway face T20 league logjam

The same squad will take part in the ODI tri-series in Pakistan ahead of the Champions Trophy, which will also feature South Africa. Duffy has been named on standby for that series, if Ferguson is not available for those games due to the ILT20. There will also be a tight turnaround for Kane Williamson and Devon Conway who are at the SA20.The final of the SA20 will be played on February 8, with the ILT20 decider the following day. New Zealand will play Pakistan on February 8 in their first game of the tri-series followed by South Africa on February 10. They then have a warm-up match against Afghanistan on February 16.Lockie Ferguson could miss a chunk of the Pakistan tri-series if he features in the ILT20 playoffs•AFP/Getty Images

Stead said New Zealand were looking to have Ferguson, Williamson and Conway play at least two matches – including the warm-up – to ready themselves for the Champions Trophy. “Those three guys, they’re world-class players for us. So Kane, Devon and Lockie will join our squad – they could be there at the very start of the tri-series, [or] it might be a couple of days later.”Mitchell Santner will lead New Zealand for the first time in a global event and will be able to lean on the experience of the likes of Williamson and Tom Latham.Mark Chapman and Will Young have earned spots while spin-bowling allrounder Michael Bracewell has also been included.New Zealand will play the tournament opener against Pakistan in Karachi. Their second match is against Bangladesh in Rawalpindi before they travel to Dubai to face India.”We like to stick to the same team once we’ve picked it but it will probably be very conditions-dependent,” Santner said. “Karachi could play a lot different to Rawalpindi, and again in Dubai. With the short nature of the tournament, if you’re happy with your XI, you want them to be out there and perform for all three games. But we’re open to changes depending on conditions. You need to play your best team on what’s in front of you, and conditions will probably dictate it.”

Arsenal: Berta now leading charge to sign "powerful" £21m star; offer ready

da betcris: Arsenal sporting director Andrea Berta is personally leading the charge to sign a “powerful” player, with an offer now ready to be submitted, according to a report.

Berta taking hands-on role at the Emirates

da winzada777: Having laid the foundations, the Arsenal hierarchy believes now is the time for the team to start winning silverware, and Berta has a big role to play, with the Italian regarded as a master negotiator, capable of being involved in multiple deals at once.

The 53-year-old is taking a hands-on role at the Emirates Stadium, attending training sessions and press conferences, while also putting in work behind-the-scenes to secure agreements for the likes of Kepa Arrizabalaga, Christian Norgaard and Martin Zubimendi.

There have been some disagreements with Mikel Arteta, however, especially when it comes to which striker they should bring in, with Berta keen to sign Sporting CP’s Viktor Gyokeres, while the manager would prefer to sign RB Leipzig’s Benjamin Sesko.

Berta is simultaneously working on moves for both strikers, indicating a decision is yet to be made as to which striker is the preferred option, and the north Londoners are also keen to strengthen at the opposite end of the pitch.

That is according to a report from Super Deporte (via Sport Witness), which states Berta is now leading the charge for Valencia defender Cristhian Mosquera, who has recently been identified as a key target by Arteta.

Saka will love him: Arsenal agree initial fee to sign £60m "monster"

Arsenal could be growing closer to signing a new striker.

ByMatt Dawson Jun 29, 2025

Such is Arsenal’s level of interest, they are now ready to submit an offer in the region of €20m – €25m (£17m – £21m) for Mosquera, with around €3m – €5m (£2.6m – £4.3m) of the higher amount based on bonuses relating to performance.

Berta is said to be key to the deal, with the sporting director retaining a long-term interest in the 21-year-old, having also targeted him during his time with Atlético Madrid.

"Powerful" Mosquera could be ideal centre-back signing

With any new centre-back signing unlikely to immediately take Gabriel or William Saliba’s spot in the starting XI, it would make sense to bring in a younger centre-back, capable of replacing one of the first-choice options on a long-term basis.

The Valencia star is showing very promising signs in La Liga, having now established himself as a key player, missing just one La Liga game last season, while the defender has also received high praise from former youth coach Miguel-Ángel Angulo.

Angulo said: “He’s characterised by a physical condition and good technical qualities, powerful in the air, and mature for his age.”

Having also received plaudits from Statman Dave, Mosquera is clearly an exciting young player, who could provide Arsenal with the depth to compete on all fronts next season, before going on to stake a claim for a regular starting spot.

Hansi Flick fumes at Barcelona stars despite Marcus Rashford and Co securing 3-0 win at nine-man Real Mallorca on La Liga's opening day

A dramatic game at Son Moix on Saturday saw Barcelona grab three goals and take home all three points in their opening La Liga fixture, while Real Mallorca finished the game with nine men after seeing Manu Morlanes and Vedat Muriqi sent off in the opening 45 minutes. Barcelona led 2-0 at half-time, thanks to goals from Raphinha and Ferran Torres, but had to wait until stoppage time to score again when Lamine Yamal put some gloss on the scoreline with a brilliant effort.

Hansi Flick's side might have been expected to have won by a bigger scoreline given that they played against nine men for over 45 minutes in Mallorca. Marcus Rashford and Dani Olmo were both sent on in the second half to freshen up the team but neither could find the back of the net. Flick admitted afterwards that he had not enjoyed his team's second-half performance and felt Barcelona lacked intensity.

WHAT FLICK SAID

He told : "I didn’t like the match. These are three important points, but after going 2-0 up, and with the two red cards, I think my team played at 50%. That can’t happen. I need to talk to the players about this. You can’t play at 50% against nine players, that’s not what I expect."

Australia face Labuschagne call amid batting squeeze

The No. 3 is now the batter under scrutiny heading into the World Test Championship final and tour of West Indies

AAP10-Feb-2025Selectors will wait to make a call on Marnus Labuschagne’s Test future as Australia brace for a batting squeeze in the World Test Championship final and beyond. It comes as in-form Steven Smith urged selectors to keep the faith in Labuschagne, saying it was not long ago he was in a similar predicament to the faltering No. 3.Related

Labuschagne’s lukewarm form continued in Australia’s 2-0 series defeat of Sri Lanka with scores of 20 and 4 in his first two knocks. He looked to be finding his feet as he made an unbeaten 26 in a 37-run stand with Usman Khawaja that sealed victory in the second Test in Galle on Sunday. But despite that effort and handy half-centuries in Melbourne during the recent India series, Labuschagne has only made one century in his past 51 Test innings. Since the beginning of 2023, Labuschagne has averaged 31.54, well down on the 62.29 he managed across the four calendar years before then. The timing looks unfortunate with a glut of batting options available for the WTC Final against South Africa at Lord’s in June.Cameron Green is set to return to the selection frame as a middle-order option following back surgery, while Josh Inglis impressed with a century on debut in Sri Lanka.Sam Konstas is pushing for a recall after being ousted from the top to facilitate Travis Head’s shift from No.5 and Nathan McSweeney is vying for a first Test in his preferred middle-order spot.”It’s clear that we’ve got some players that have put their hand up, so there is a squeeze,” said coach Andrew McDonald. “Whoever misses out will be very unlucky.”Australia could change their XI around between the WTC Final and the three-match West Indies series that begins later in June. McDonald said it was “highly likely” the squads would be different for the two, but Australia will defer selection calls, including on Labuschagne, until closer to June.”England creates a different challenge and then off to West Indies, which can spin, it can also swing and seam,” McDonald said. “The beauty of it is we’ve got some time before we have to make some decisions.”It’s great to have options. Will they all be fit at that time? Who fits what conditions and when? I think that’s going to be the art of what transpires across the journey.”Smith remains confident Labuschagne is approaching a big score, sceptical about claims his close mate is even out of form. The stand-in captain went as far as to say he had recently been in a similar situation to Labuschagne, feeling at his best despite scores of 0, 17 and 2 to begin the home summer.Smith has since scored centuries in four of five Test matches since those lean figures against India and was player of the series against Sri Lanka.”Marn’s similar to me, in a way,” Smith said. “I’ve said this a lot of times about myself, there’s a difference between being out of form and out of runs. I don’t think he’s out of form, personally. I’ve watched him train, I’ve watched him play and a lot of the things that he’s done so well are there.”He knows he’d love to score more runs, we’d love him to score more runs, but in my opinion, it’s just around the corner.”

West Brom now reach total agreement to sign 8-goal striker for Mason

Kicking on with their summer business, West Bromwich Albion have now reportedly reached an agreement to sign an attacking reinforcement worth around £5m.

Since appointing Ryan Mason and signing Nat Phillips from Liverpool, West Brom’s summer business has slowed down somewhat. And with just one month until the Championship gets back underway, the Baggies must rediscover their momentum to welcome some key additions for their new manager.

That’s not to say the rumours haven’t been coming thick and fast, though. Whilst West Brom haven’t acted since signing Phillips, there are still several names on their reported radar.

Among them includes the experienced Barry Bannan. The veteran midfielder is currently at Sheffield Wednesday, who remain in a precarious spot financially and struggling to pay staff on time. Failure to solve that problem will likely to result in an exodus of players, allowing West Brom to take full advantage.

Any signing would be following Phillips through the door, who expressed his delight after putting pen to paper at The Hawthorns last month, saying: “A big factor was that this is obviously a big club with high aspirations – and I’d say those aspirations align with mine. I think everyone at the club and involved would like to see it competing for promotion and pushing for Premier League football – and that’s the same as me.

“I’m really looking forward to it and as soon as I found out about the interest I just wanted to get here and get going. Throughout my career I’ve always wanted to develop a rhythm and continue to play week in, week out. I feel like I did that in the second half of last season, and I want to continue that rhythm and try to take that into the season coming up.

West Brom can forget Brooks by signing "fearless" star who's "like Neymar"

West Bromwich Albion could now sign this fearless attacker after failing to land David Brooks.

ByKelan Sarson Jul 4, 2025

“I’ve had a number of loans over the past few years and it’ll be really nice for me and my family to go somewhere and know we’re staying there to develop a relationship with the club and the fans.”

As impressive as the defender is, the Baggies require more reinforcements and have now reportedly turned towards a fresh name in pursuit of exactly that.

West Brom agree deal to sign Heggebo

According to Fabrizio Romano, West Brom have now reached an agreement to sign Aune Heggebo from Norwegian side Brann. In a deal worth around €5.5m (£5m), the 23-year-old striker will hand Mason an instant attacking boost to kickstart the Baggies’ summer business.

The young forward will be a new name to most, but those in Norway will know him as the player who scored seven goals in just 13 league appearances last season and eight goals in all competitions.

Whether those numbers translate to the Championship will be the big question next season, especially as Heggebo enters the peak of his powers in the coming years.
