Andre Russell lights up Eden Gardens

A floodlight malfunction meant a 13-minute delay in Kolkata, with the hosts in need of a miracle. Up stepped Andre Russell from the darkness to pull off the impossible.

Surprised to see Sunrisers bowl a spinner at the end – Rana

At 7.18pm, the floodlight tower on the High Court End at Eden Gardens lost power. It was not the first time that happened.Remember Kolkata Knight Riders’ very first IPL match at home in 2008? Or the World Twenty20 match between Bangladesh and New Zealand in 2016? On both occasions, it took nearly 15 minutes for the lights to regain full brightness. So, it was not too worrying when the umpires and players walked off in the 16th over, with Knight Riders needing 64 runs from 28 deliveries, because play was always expected to resume. But what happened during that 13-minute delay between 7.18pm and 7.31pm summed up how the game eventually panned out.The Sunrisers Hyderabad players, ahead by eight runs on DLS, and in the midst of strangling the Knight Riders chase, looked the calmer of the two sides. The men in orange headed to the dugout for a breather, with a light mood in the Sunrisers camp. Nitish Rana, then unbeaten on 68, also picked his feet up for a breather in the Knight Riders camp. But one man who was not letting his intensity drop was Andre Russell.Over at the practice pitches, under the floodlight tower that was still coming back to life, Russell – bat in hand – took stance. He called Simon Katich, the team batting coach, to hand him some throwdowns. While the other 12 cricketers involved in the game at that stage took a moment to catch their breath, Russell was ensuring that his focus did not waver. It’s not that he was walloping Katich’s throwdowns – he could’ve, with ease, had he wished – but was instead prodding forward every delivery to check-drive back to his coach.ESPNcricinfo LtdWhen play resumed just after 7.30pm, Russell – then on 3* – stood at the non-striker’s end. He witnessed Rashid Khan trap the set Rana lbw, first ball after the break. Russell, though, was not perturbed. He had other plans.Off the 16th over’s final delivery – Rashid’s last of the evening – Russell clobbered a length ball outside off stump to the extra-cover fence. Most batsmen in world cricket would happily see off Rashid’s final ball of the spell and take their chances in the last four overs, but Russell isn’t like most batsmen. That four off Rashid’s final delivery brought the equation to 59 off 24 balls, but a fantastic third over from stand-in captain Bhuvneshwar Kumar once again widened the gap between runs and balls. With 53 needed off 18, Knight Riders and Russell were in uncharted territory. Never before had a team chased more than 52 runs in the final three overs to win an IPL game. In fact, in all T20 cricket, this had been achieved only twice. But Russell didn’t know that, and so he believed. From nine off seven balls, Russell soared to 27 off 12 by the end of the 18th over, bowled by Siddarth Kaul. By the time Bhuvneshwar finished his final over – the game’s 19th – Russell had moved on to 48 off 18. Knight Riders had collected 40 runs in 12 deliveries, and with 13 needed off the final over, a win for the hosts was a mere formality. They finished the game with two balls to spare, and Russell was stranded on 49 – one short of a well-deserved fifty – but one doubts he cares. When captain Dinesh Karthik ran across the ground after Shubman Gill struck the winning runs, he first jumped on Russell. The improbable had happened, and Knight Riders became the first side to make 53 runs in the final three overs of an IPL game to win.”I cannot describe Russell’s batting, even if I wanted to. I’m absolutely lost for words,” Rana said later. “The way he hit the sixes, and made us win with two balls to spare, I’m speechless.”We know Russell is capable [to chase a difficult total], and we don’t know this from today. We’ve known Russell’s ability for a long time now, and we trust him to win games for us from improbable situations.”Russell received praise from the other camp as well, with Rashid describing the innings as a ‘special knock’.Andre Russell and Shubman Gill gave KKR a come-from-behind victory•BCCI”In the death overs, we needed to bat the way Russell did,” Rashid said. “Getting Rana’s wicket after the floodlight-break, gave us momentum. At Eden Gardens, getting 170-180 is defendable. We put up a good total on the board, but we couldn’t finish well in the final three overs, and that happens.”Russell’s innings made the difference. When you make special knocks like Russell, you totally change the game. Knocks like that from the lower-order can take scores from 150 to 180, and from 180 to 210. So we’ll have this in the back of our mind moving forward to have someone with that ability in our team. We were in the game till the 17th over, but Russell just took it away from us.”Russell’s innings was one to remember, coming at such a difficult stage of the game, that some fans even opened their shirts, Ganguly-at-Lord’s style, to celebrate the home side’s victory.Such was the impact of Russell’s innings that it relegated Rana’s 47-ball 68 and David Warner’s 53-ball 85 into mere footnotes. That doesn’t happen too often, but when it does, it makes for an evening to remember for the home fans.

Lord's under scrutiny again as prices rise for India Test in 2025

Club unmoved by concern over empty stands against Sri Lanka, citing higher demand

Ticket prices for next year’s Lord’s Test against India have risen once again, despite Marylebone Cricket Club coming in for severe criticism for the cost of entry to this summer’s Test against Sri Lanka. For the first three days of the India Test, which begins on July 10 next year, the cheapest adult tickets on offer are restricted-view seats for £90 each (£20 for under-16s). Those with a clear line of sight are priced between £120-£175 (£40-£50 for under-16s).These prices compare unfavourably with last month’s Test against Sri Lanka, for which the cost of unrestricted views ranged from £115-£140 for adults and £15-£40 for concessions. That Sri Lanka contest concluded on the fourth day, for which just 9,000 tickets (approx one-third capacity) were sold. This was, in part, a reflection of England’s current fast-paced approach to Test cricket, with several recent contests being wrapped up well in advance of the final day.MCC came under further criticism for failing to offer any reduced-entry options until after tea on that fourth day, when the price fell to £15 for adults and £5 for under-16s. By then, however, there were just three Sri Lanka wickets left to fall, and the lack of advance notice further prevented a significant take-up.Related

England to host India Men and Women tours in 2025

Speaking in the aftermath of the Test, England’s stand-in captain Ollie Pope said that the subdued atmosphere had been noted by his team.”It was just like ‘jeez, it seems quiet today’,” he said. “I’m not sure if people expected the game to be done by day four or not. It’s a shame it wasn’t a full house because it was obviously a good day’s play.”Despite Guy Lavender, the chief executive and secretary of MCC, announcing that the club would be conducting a review into its fourth-day pricing policy, there is little concession for fans who hope to attend on that day for next year’s India Test. Under-16s will be admitted for £25, half the cost of the first three days, but tickets with a full view will still cost £90-£150.MCC’s rationale is that India are now the second-biggest draw in the English Test calendar, behind Australia, and the prices reflect the likely demand, which is in line with the policy adopted by other sports. The top-priced tickets for the 2023 Ashes Test were £170, which the club argues represents a below-inflation increase of £5.Lord’s is also due to host the World Test Championship final in June, which is currently on course to be contested between India and Australia, a rematch of the 2023 final at the Kia Oval. Tickets for that match are set between £70-130 for adults and £20-£50 for under-16s.England and India are also due to play a women’s ODI at Lord’s in 2025, for which adult tickets will be available for between £25 and £45. The men’s ODI against South Africa, on the other hand, will cost between £75 and £150.

ÚLTIMA VITÓRIA DO VASCO

A Espanha conquistou a primeira Copa do Mundo disputada no continente africano. “Passione” era a novela na faixa das nove horas da noite. E “Baby”, cantada pelo canadense Justin Bieber, era a música do momento.

NO ESPORTE

NO CINEMA

He'd be elite alongside Wirtz: £130m star is now Liverpool's no.1 target

Liverpool have been busy already in the 2025 summer transfer window. It has been a remarkable show of intent from Arne Slot’s team, who, as defending champions, are making a clear step towards strengthening their side to defend the Premier League next season.

Jeremie Frimpong has already joined the club, and a deal for Florian Wirtz cannot be more than a few days away now. Fabrizio Romano gave the move his famous “here we go” confirmation, citing the price of the move as £128m including add-ons.

Florian Wirtz

With that much money spent on the German star, you might think there is not enough money left for the Reds to spend.

However, a recent report implies they could splash the cash even more.

Liverpool's next big signing earmarked

If Liverpool were to spend big after signing Wirtz, it would be a huge statement to the rest of the Premier League, and arguably make them favourites to retain their crown. There certainly seems to be money left for another marquee addition.

That player could be Alexander Isak of Newcastle United.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

At least, that is according to a recent report from Lewis Steele, the Daily Mail’s Merseyside-based reporter. The journalist explained that a move for Isak could materialise and that he ‘wouldn’t completely rule it out’ this summer.

Newcastle United's AlexanderIsakcelebrates scoring their first goal

However, unsurprisingly, this is not a deal that would come cheap for the newly-crowned Premier League champions. Steele explained that ‘Newcastle don’t want to sell him for cheap’, before naming a ‘ballpark figure’ starting at around £130m and reaching as much as £140m.

That makes any move extremely unlikely but TEAMtalk do reveal that the Swede is Liverpool’s number one striker target this summer.

How Wirtz could improve Alexander Isak

There is a very strong case to be made that 25-year-old is the best number nine in the Premier League. He was sensational last season for Eddie Howe’s side, helping claw them into a Champions League spot.

Last season for the Magpies, Isak played 34 Premier League games, scoring 23 goals and registering six assists. No striker managed to find the back of the net more often, and Mohamed Salah, Isak’s teammate if he moves to Anfield, was the only player to bag more.

Of course, Liverpool know all too well the dangers that Isak has to offer, having been on the receiving end of his goal threat plenty.

In six matches against the Reds in his career, the Sweden international has scored four goals and grabbed an assist. One of those strikes came in the Carabao Cup final in 2025.

The Anfield faithful could be in dreamland if they get to see Wirtz and Isak link up next season. The Bayer Leverkusen star has been in sensational form in 2024/25, with 16 goals and 15 assists in 45 games for the German side.

The crucial thing there is the assist number. At just 22 years of age, Wirtz is already a player who creates an obscene number of goals for his side. However, if you combine him with a player as good as Isak, who is a natural killer in front of goal, he may only get better.

The assist below is an excellent example of how the two new potential Liverpool recruits can combine.

With Wirtz receiving the ball out on the left, he is able to beat the defender and play a perfectly weighted pass to Patrick Schick, who scores.

Now, imagine the passage of play takes place in Liverpool colours at Anfield, with Wirtz’s pass going to Isak, and it is not hard to see why the pair could become unstoppable. The deadly striker could turn his potential new teammate into an even better creative force in the final third.

Isak’s stats from the Premier League last term via FBRef are exceptional, too. The Sweden international ranks highly for most metrics, including goals per shot on target, which was 0.46 each game, showing just how efficient he is with his shooting.

There is no doubt that £140m is a huge investment for Liverpool, on top of the money they already spent on Wirtz. However, Isak is an “elite” striker, as Statman Dave said, and he could make this Liverpool side virtually unbeatable.

Newcastle United'sAlexanderIsak

If this is a deal they get over the line, it would be a huge statement of intent, and a signing that could make Wirtz even better, too.

@Utd_Forever7 added: "Everyone is signing players while we are trying to sign directors that needed to be signed long time ago! You made us believe@INEOS&@ManUtdbut actually nothing has changed!"

@CentreBrack wrote: "Isn't this something you do before a transfer window? Especially a transfer window where you need to overhaul your squad after finishing 15th the previous year? Fascinating behaviour every day from this club honestly."

Meanwhile, @battye_edward was more balanced, writing: "They just made a load of scouts redundant, got to look long term with this, not like we can't sign players without these people in place. It's easy to criticise but we need to wait and see what happens over the next few years."

  • WHAT THE PUNDITS ARE SAYING

According to Ornstein, the club is currently "working with consultants Sportsology on [a] key hire to revamped department". He wrote: "Manchester United are searching for a head of senior recruitment, a new role overseeing senior scouts, as part of their overhaul of that department. THE BIGGER PICTURE

The behind-the-scenes recruitment turmoil at Old Trafford perhaps explains the club's trouble improving the squad this summer. Their move for Brentford's Bryan Mbeumo has dragged on for weeks and the Cameroon international has been warned that his potential big-money transfer may not be the wisest decision, with other clubs circling around the high-performing attacker.

Ipswich Town looking to sign £20m+ striker with 27 goals in Championship

da cassino online: With Liam Delap on his way to Chelsea, Ipswich Town are now reportedly looking to sign a former Championship forward worth over £20m, and he’s already scored at Portman Road.

Ipswich looking to replace Delap

da 888casino: It’s a big summer for the Tractor Boys. After suffering relegation at the first time of asking in the Premier League, those at Portman Road must reassess and go again in the Championship. On that front, Kieran McKenna will of course have his sights set on earning a place back in the top flight, avoiding any further drop-off in the process next season.

If "sensational" Ipswich star leaves, it would be as disastrous as Delap

Ipswich Town could also lose this sensational star away from just Liam Delap leaving Portman Road.

ByKelan Sarson May 23, 2025

In pursuit of that, however, the Ipswich boss will have to cope without star man Delap. The talented striker is reportedly set to join Chelsea this summer after the Blues triggered his relegation release clause ahead of the summer transfer window. Landing a bargain deal worth just £30m, it seems only a matter of time before Delap is presented as Enzo Maresca’s latest signing.

Just how Ipswich replace Delap is the question that they must now consider this summer. Already, names such as Divin Mubama have threatened to steal the headlines, but whether the Tractor Boys go two for two when it comes to signing talented Manchester City gems remains to be seen.

The young forward has struggled to gain first-team opportunities at the Etihad, but is valued at around £10m nonetheless. Given how successful their deal to sign Delap was last summer, Ipswich may see Mubama as an ideal opportunity to splash out again on Premier League talent.

Mubama isn’t the only option on Ipswich’s radar, however, with those at Portman Road also reportedly setting their sights on an MLS star.

Ipswich now looking to sign Latte Lath

According to EFL Analysis, Ipswich are now looking to sign Emmanuel Latte Lath from Atlanta United this summer. The 26-year-old left Middlesbrough to join the MLS side for a reported £22.5m during the January transfer window, but could already be on his way back to the Championship courtesy of the Tractor Boys.

Having been interested in signing Latte Lath during the last summer window, themselves, Ipswich’s interest reportedly remains following their Premier League relegation. Given how proven the forward is in England’s second tier too, that interest certainly makes sense.

It was during his time in the Championship that the Atlanta striker proved his goalscoring prowess in front of McKenna and Ipswich when he found the back of the net in a 1-1 draw at Portman Road in the 2023/24 campaign.

It was also a spell in which Latte Lath found himself at the centre of Michael Carrick’s praise. The Middlesbrough manager told reporters back in October: “We’ve got really good players in the squad and there’s times when players are going to be in or maybe don’t start the game.

“But I thought Manu coming off the bench, fresh and sharp like he is, would be a big benefit for us tonight. I was delighted with him, his reaction to not playing was also fantastic as you’d expect and hope for. Everyone shared that love.”

He only hoped they can “learn from the experience and disappointment.”India were shoddy on the field and conceded “10-15 more” and tangled themselves into a position from which they were once again hoping for a Harmanpreet Kaur miracle to bail them out. The captain was unbeaten on 54 off 47, visibly drained and upset at the team’s second loss in four games.”I think we were in the game right till the last over, just that experience of Australia saw them through,” Muzumdar said after the game. “A little disappointed with the loss. I feel we’ve fielded pretty well. A couple of chances could’ve been taken and things could’ve been different.”Related

India dropped three catches, missed one stumping and a run-out opportunity on the field. India also had a close lbw call of Phoebe Litchfield go in Australia’s favour.Litchfield, a left-hand batter, was on 5 when she was struck on the pad by a Deepti Sharma delivery while attempting a reverse sweep but was reprieved after taking a review only because the ball [accounting for her not having changed her stance before delivery] pitched outside leg. Litchfield added 10 more, including a last-ball six to set India a 152 target – the highest team total at this venue in this tournament. The next best was also Australia’s 148 against New Zealand last week.Muzumdar steered clear of being critical of the Litchfield decision, but didn’t shy away from saying “it was a crucial one.” He also gave a peek into the team’s line of thinking at the halfway mark of their chase, from where India needed 85 with Harmanpreet and Deepti at the crease. The pair added 63 in 55 balls, but went through a six-over period where they managed just three boundaries. It left them needing 70 off the last seven overs.”First and foremost, it was about the run-chase,” Muzumdar revealed of the chat at the 10-over mark. “Second was keeping the net run rate also in bounds. But the only message was if we take it a little deeper, then we do have a good chance to chase. That was the only message to Harman and Deepti. I think Harman’s presence was very important till the end, that is what I felt in the run chase, and almost got it through.”India’s time for a post-mortem will come soon, but probably not before Monday considering there’s still a slim chance that hinges on Pakistan upsetting New Zealand. But Muzumdar was clear while those conversations may be inevitable, he underlined they couldn’t be faulted for lack of preparation or commitment from the players.4:18

Takeaways: Australia block out the noise, India’s fielding in focus again

“I think in terms of preparation, we had everything going in that camp in Bangalore,” he said. “We had two camps; one was dedicated towards fitness and fielding and the other one was just the skill camp. Because we had about eight weeks to prepare.”So, I couldn’t have asked for more from my support staff and I couldn’t have asked for more from the players. They gave their best in those camps. Preparation about this World Cup was thorough. We came into this World Cup really upbeat. Yeah, it is a little disappointing to lose the two games in the league stages.”India’s build-up to the game had been fairly smooth – they even managed to train twice in Sharjah ahead of their first game of the competition there. They brought back Pooja Vastrakar into the XI after she had sufficiently recovered from a hamstring niggle. It meant S Sajana had to make way. Muzumdar termed this a no-brainer, and they wouldn’t have done anything different in hindsight.”Look, we came into this work up with Pooja being one of the best bowlers going in the last 12 months,” Muzumdar explained. “Seeing her record and performances she was one of the best bowlers in the side and we had decided on this XI. This was probably one of the best XIs that we had.”In these conditions, we wanted to have the sixth bowling option against Australia. I think that was probably one of the best teams to pick [for the tournament]. If you had picked [the squad] before the start of the tournament, I think you would have picked this 15. So we stuck by it.”Muzumdar was also extremely complimentary of his captain, Harmanpreet, who fought through plenty of physical discomfort over the past two weeks. Muzumdar revealed Harmanpreet copped a blow on her head prior to India’s opening game, against New Zealand, but battled through pain. She was conformably India’s highest run-scorer in the league phase, hitting 150 runs in four innings at a strike rate of 133.92.”I think it’s been fantastic working with this lot; this is a very special lot that we’re working with, and we care about each other, and I think Harman is a very integral part of this team,” Muzumdar said. “It’s been a fantastic 10 months working with her and all others as well. But yeah, I mean she’s fine. She’s going through a lot of pain.”She got hit on her head right at the start of the tournament, just before the New Zealand game, I think one night prior when we were practicing. But she’s fine. I think she’s battling with it, and you can see it, but she’s a workhorse. So, I think she goes about doing her business [usually]. It’s been special working for the last 10 months and I’m looking forward to it [going forward].”

Newcastle leading race to sign "fantastic" £34m ace who may replace Tonali

As speculation continues to arrive about Sandro Tonali’s future, Newcastle United are reportedly in pole position to sign a midfield star who could replace the impressive Italian.

Juventus interested in Sandro Tonali

When Newcastle were without Tonali at the start of the season, it showed. Eddie Howe’s side struggled in pursuit of Champions League qualification and were lacking that added power in the middle of the park. Ever since the return of the Italian, however, the Magpies have dominated the majority of their midfield battles and formed quite the trio between Tonali, Bruno Guimaraes and Joelinton.

The perfect blend of combative midfielders and those who have the ability to step onto the front foot, not many can stand in the way of Newcastle’s bulldozing midfield three at their best.

As a result, interest was always likely to arrive with reports in Italy now indicating that Juventus are interested in signing Tonali in this summer’s transfer window. The Italian giants are seemingly looking to bring the midfielder back to the Serie A for the first time since he left AC Milan in what should send alarm bells ringing around St James’ Park.

Jamie Carragher has been among those to praise the Newcastle midfielder this season, even including him in his Monday Night Football Team of the Season. The Sky Sports pundit said when asked why: “I went for Tonali because Newcastle look like they are going to finish third in the Premier League.

Better than Mbeumo: Newcastle make "terrifyingly good" £67m ace a key target

Newcastle are in the market for a new winger, with Brentford’s Bryan Mbeumo among those being mooted.

ByJoe Nuttall May 28, 2025

“I don’t think many people would have predicted that. They’ve won a trophy for the first time in 70 years. But they actually made a poor start to the season. I don’t think their season turned around until Eddie Howe put him [Tonali] in the holding role.”

Of course, it remains to be seen whether Tonali will give into the temptation of Italy, but it seems as though Newcastle have a much-needed plan in place nonetheless.

Newcastle now leading race to sign Matteo Guendouzi

According to Gazzetta dello Sport, as relayed by Sport Witness, Newcastle are now leading the race to sign Matteo Guendouzi from Lazio this summer. The former Arsenal midfielder is reportedly valued at just €40m (£34m) and could now be on his way back to the Premier League if Tonali decides to leave St James’ Park.

Not only does Guendouzi progress play better than Tonali, he has also outperformed the impressive Guimaraes in that department. Since leaving the Premier League with a whimper, the Frenchman has simply discovered another level to his game.

Matteo Guendouzi at Lazio

Earning plenty of praise ever since his time at the Emirates, football talent scout Jacek Kulig dubbed Guendouzi a “fantastic signing” by Marseille in 2021 and the midfielder has only proved to be equally as fantastic at Lazio.

Devdutt Padikkal: 'Virat Kohli makes your game easier and helps you build an innings'

The young Royal Challengers Bangalore opener on what he learnt from Kohli, de Villiers and Finch, and his India goals

Interview by Vishal Dikshit13-Nov-2020Devdutt Padikkal, the 20-year-old Royal Challengers Bangalore opener, made his IPL debut this season and, with his elegant strokeplay, he even outscored Virat Kohli and AB de Villiers, taking home the Emerging Player Award for his 473 runs, which included five half-centuries, from 15 innings. After returning to India, he talked to us about his unforgettable season, the things he picked up from Kohli and de Villiers, and the bowler he found the most challenging to face.Opening the batting for Royal Challengers, you had a crucial role in the powerplay. How did you plan your innings?
I was just looking to stick to my strengths and do what I do best. In T20 cricket, it’s important how the powerplay goes. We had our roles clearly defined, so it was important to get that opening partnership away at a decent rate. And, to an extent, we were able to do that. How and when did you come to know you’d be opening for RCB?
Simon Katich [RCB’s head coach] came up to me the day before the [first] game in the team room and he was like, “You’re going to be making your debut tomorrow”. It was a huge moment for me and I was really happy about it.You spent a lot of time in the middle with Kohli. You scored 345 runs together this season with four half-century stands. What did you learn from batting with him?
He makes your game easier and helps you build an innings. He knows exactly what to do in every situation because he is such an experienced player, he’s played so much good quality cricket, and he’s won so many things. Every time I batted with him, I could learn something new. It was a really great experience for me. I was just trying to take in as much as I can. I really enjoyed it.ALSO READ: IPL stats review: Uncapped Indians shine, overseas fast bowlers trump IndiansDo you remember any particular conversations with him out in the middle?
Yeah, during the Rajasthan [Royals] game, we were batting together and I got a fifty. We knew that for the next batsman coming into the chase it’s not always easy. It was important that I carried on. I was tiring a little bit and he kept pushing me to get those extra runs – whatever I could. He said it was important that I wouldn’t throw my wicket away at that point. That’s something he helped me out with in that innings.

You also tweeted two pictures with Kohli – one from a while ago in which you’re receiving a medal from him and the other is a recent one in Royal Challengers colours. Can you tell us about the journey between those two photographs?
[The first one] was from a promotional event around five years ago. He [Kohli] had come to our academy [Karnataka Institute of Cricket]. A few boys from the academy were asked to go and play a match and he was there. Even Unmukt Chand [the former India Under-19 captain] was there. They were captains of two teams and I was part of Chand’s team. After that, everyone was given a medal and Kohli gave my medal to me.You didn’t bat with de Villiers as much as you did with Kohli, but you must have picked his brain during the tournament?
Yeah. He’s a special player. Just watching him bat is a treat for your eyes. Throughout the season, he kept telling me to stay in the zone and continue to do what I was doing. I remember when we were travelling back from the Mumbai [Indians] game in which I got the 70 [74], he sent me a text message saying, “Continue to do that and you’re playing really well, just stay in the zone and enjoy yourself”. That was really special because, coming from him, it was a great honour. I really enjoyed batting with him whenever I could because he makes your job so easy. He just takes on the bowlers from ball one and I enjoyed watching him.”I knew that when I came into the IPL, there will be big players around and I knew I’d want to be the one to take the responsibility”•BCCIIn a lot of the videos that the Royal Challengers posted on social media, it seemed like you had a good rapport with Aaron Finch, whom you also opened with quite a few times. What kind of a relationship did you build with him as the season went on?
He’s a really great person and I enjoyed spending time with him off the field as well. Like I said, all these experienced batsmen make your job easier. At the beginning of the tournament, we had this goal to have one of the highest opening partnerships of the season. I think we were third on the list after KL Rahul-Mayank Agarwal and Jonny Bairstow and David Warner, or second, I’m not sure [Padikkal and Finch were second with 444 runs behind Rahul and Agarwal, who made 671 runs together]. That’s something we were looking to do and we were able to do that, to an extent. You’ve scored a lot of runs in the last domestic season, but in the IPL, you were facing bowlers like Jofra Archer, Jasprit Bumrah and Pat Cummins. Did you have to take your batting one level up to face these fast bowlers?
Yeah, it’s a different challenge compared to domestic cricket. But I knew I was prepared enough and we had put in three weeks of intense practice before starting the IPL.Which bowlers made you think, “I’ve never faced this kind of pace before”?
Pace, not really, because there are quite a few bowlers who are pretty quick in the domestic circuit as well. Probably the one bowler I felt was challenging was [legspinner] Rashid Khan, because he has really good pace and turns the ball at the same time. He’s not easy to pick. I think while facing him I felt like, “Okay, this is something I’m not used to.”ALSO READ: Aakash Chopra: Things that surprised me this IPLWhat kind of preparation did you put in with the Royal Challengers over the last two years? Mike Hesson, the RCB director of cricket operations, said in November last year that when you were with the team in 2019, you showed a lot of willingness to learn from the seniors around you.
It was more [about] the mental side of the game, because after a certain point the physical aspect is in a set place. Then it’s more about how you handle the pressure and the situation. So that’s what I was working on and whenever I got a chance, even in domestic tournaments, I wanted to make sure that I took responsibility and tried to take the team home even though there were some international cricketers in our Karnataka side. That’s something I really wanted to work on because I knew that when I came into the IPL, there will be big players around and I knew I’d want to be the one to take the responsibility.Which senior batsman or coach in the Royal Challengers set-up did you approach the most when you had questions or doubts?
To an extent, it was Simon Katich, because he was really approachable. Whenever I felt like there was something I needed to work on and if I had any doubts, I would go to him.You impressed everyone a lot with your strokeplay and flair, but statistics show that your strike rate dips after the powerplay. Did that bother you at any point? Did you feel it was something you needed to work on?
Definitely, sometimes you may not get the shots off the middle of your bat. That’s part of the learning and hopefully I can continue to work on that and keep improving. It didn’t really affect me too much because I knew that as I improve and learn, I can get better at that as well. You have got plenty of runs in domestic cricket for Karnataka and an Emerging Player Award in the IPL. What’s your next target?
Now the next step would be to play for the country. It’s something everyone dreams of as a cricketer, so I’m looking forward to doing that soon. I’ll continue to work on my game, continue to improve and, whenever I get the opportunity, I’ll take it with both hands.
