Northern Superchargers 147 for 3 (Pooran 62) beat Southern Brave 146 for 8 (Pollard 37) by seven wicketsNicholas Pooran smashed 62 from 34 deliveries to power Andrew Flintoff’s Northern Superchargers to their first win in The Hundred this season.Against an attack of Jofra Archer, Chris Jordan, Tymal Mills, Rehan Ahmed and Akeal Hosein, Pooran was dominant from the get-go – demonstrating both why he had been first pick in The Hundred Draft and also the power of using your own bat, having been forced to borrow Phil Salt’s on his debut against Trent Rockets.Captain Harry Brook played a support role in a 50-partnership with Pooran, and was there at the end to win it in style and see the team in purple get off the mark in this year’s competition.Southern Brave weren’t quite at their domineering best, as they had been at Utilita Bowl last week, but they didn’t do much wrong other than come up against Pooran with the bat and Adil Rashid with the ball.On a track where spin was always going to be important, Rashid’s 1 for 19 contributed to Brave’s total of 146 for 8 coming up perhaps a touch light – though it did still require Superchargers’ second-highest chase in the competition – but at the interval James Vince and his side would have felt in the game.Archer fired up and touched 93mph but from the 15th ball onwards it was Pooran show, the West Indian hitting five sixes and giving the Leeds crowd their fair share of catching practice on the way to a raucous home win.Meerkat Match Hero Pooran said: “It feels amazing. After that first game we lost, playing back to back games here at home, we wanted the win.”The guys played brilliantly, and I think the bowlers did amazingly.”It’s always beautiful to play here in England. The surface, the atmosphere – it’s lovely.”
Birmingham Bears picked up a second win in three days to keep their place among the North Group contenders with a seven-wicket Vitality Blast victory over Derbyshire Falcons at the Incora County Ground. On a used pitch that yielded runs only reluctantly, the visitors restricted Derbyshire to 133 for 7, left-arm spinner Danny Briggs taking 2 for 23 with David Lloyd scoring 50 and Brooke Guest an unbeaten 38. Richard Gleeson took two wickets in the powerplay but it was the Bears spinners largely responsible for tying down Falcons.Derbyshire’s spinners threatened to do a similar job but Dan Mousley and Sam Hain (43) showed considerable patience and eventually reaped the rewards, their 93-run partnership across 13.3 overs effectively winning the match, Mousley closing it out with his seventh four with seven balls to spare.Having opted to bat first, Derbyshire suffered a setback when the in-form Aneurin Donald fell for just 2 but seemed to be heading for a satisfactory start until Gleeson removed Cam Fletcher and Wayne Madsen in the space of three balls in the last over of the powerplay to give Bears an early advantage.A boundary apiece from Guest and Lloyd off Jake Lintott’s opening over hinted at acceleration but Falcons’ progress was unspectacular at 65 for 3 from 10. Lloyd drove a soaring straight six off Lintott and repeated the blow against Briggs to complete a 36-ball half-century but was then caught aiming to clear the midwicket boundary.Samit Patel perished cheaply, pouched at backward point when he skied one from Briggs as the competition’s all-time leading wicket-taker on 229 dismissed his closest rival. At 103 for 5 from 16, Derbyshire had been properly strangled by Bears’ spinners. Mousley’s offspin was wicketless but conceded only 16 in his allocation.Ross Whiteley lifted Chris Woakes into the car park on the leg side but once the ball had been found Woakes promptly bowled him with a full delivery off an inside edge. The over cost 13 runs but was one of only three across the innings to yield a tally in double figures and, after Zak Chappell was run out in the last over, 133 looked too little.Daryn Dupavillon, the South African quick, angled one in to bowl Rob Yates with his fourth delivery. Mousley picked up three quick boundaries but Alex Davies, having uppercut Dupavillon for four and lifted Pat Brown for an audacious six on the leg side was caught at midwicket as Brown exacted instant revenge. Mousley slog-swept Madsen for six and the Bears were 50 for 2 from six.Patel and fellow spinner Mitch Wagstaff applied the brakes, conceding just 29 in six overs bowling in tandem, but with 55 needed after 12 overs, and eight wickets in hand, the Bears were still favourites, more so after Mousley and Hain plundered 21 from the next two before Mousley swept Patel to go to fifty from 42 balls. The requirement was down to six from 17 balls by the time Brown bowled Hain after a 42-ball innings containing only one boundary. Mousley cut Chappell for his seventh four to complete the win.
da pinnacle: It was an interminable weight for that trophy-winning feeling, if you’re one of a Tottenham Hotspur persuasion, but Ange Postecoglou’s side wiped the slate clean when defeating Manchester United in the Europa League final earlier in May.
da premier bet: Currently, it’s all a little uncertain. Postecoglou’s manager is in an imperilled position, with Daniel Levy’s judgement soon to become clear on that front.
Who could dispute Tottenham’s woes on Premier League soil, with so much going wrong for Ange’s 17th-placed side? It’s clear that action must be taken over the next few months to ensure success on the continent doesn’t turn out to be a mere flash in the pan.
Sergio Reguilon, Fraser Forster and Alfie Whiteman will all leave imminently, when their contracts expire, and Timo Werner’s two-year loan spell in London is over.
There’s much to consider. Let’s have a look at the major states of play.
The latest on Spurs' transfer targets
With European hero Cristian Romero being linked with a move to Atletico Madrid, Tottenham may need to sign a centre-back this summer.
The windfall from qualifying for the Champions League is huge, and Tottenham are in a good position to strengthen. If Romero stays, focus will be pinned on midfield and the wide forward positions.
Balancing out the club’s attacking quality is important, especially as Heung-min Son, 32, is expected to play fewer minutes across the 2025/25 campaign.
Furthermore, Dejan Kulusevski is currently sidelined after undergoing surgery on his right patella, and will be out for several months at the least. This, of course, means the Sweden star’s pre-season preparations will be disrupted.
Heung-min Son for Tottenham
Crystal Palace’s Eberechi Eze would be a brilliant signing, with rumours of a bid being prepared, but he has a £68m release clause inserted in his contract, and Levy may well want to turn his attention to another England international to help the Lilywhites make gains over the coming years.
Spurs discuss statement signing
According to GIVEMESPORT, Tottenham chairman Levy has held an internal meeting as the club draw up concrete plans for the looming market.
Eze and Manchester City star Jack Grealish have both been discussed, though Grealish might be the more feasible option from a financial standpoint.
Manchester City's JackGrealishduring the warm up before the match
Though the £300k-per-week Citizen would represent a tough deal to complete, Levy is committed to capitalising on the jubilation of winning a trophy down N17, and the 29-year-old, valued at an affordable £43m, might just fit the bill.
What Jack Grealish would bring to Spurs
Grealish might have been ostracised by Pep Guardiola as he prepares to bow out from life at the Etihad Stadium, but he’s still one of the most talented Englishmen in the game, hailed by pundit Rio Ferdinand for being “almost unplayable” when on his A-game.
Moving to Tottenham might just give him a new lease of life. Grealish joined Man City from Aston Villa for a British-record £100m fee in August 2021 after a talismanic career with his boyhood club, since going on to win the treble and much more under Pep Guardiola’s wing.
Aston Villa winger Jack Grealish.
Across 157 matches, Grealish has scored 17 goals and supplied 23 assists, though he only started seven matches in the Premier League this term and surely needs to leave Manchester.
Tottenham need some more attacking impetus in midfield. Kulusevski has been the standout this season, posting ten goals and 11 assists from 50 matches. The 25-year-old has been praised by The Athletic for being ‘the linchpin of Postecoglou’s team.’
But Grealish could enhance the fluency, promote ball-carrying and -playing principles that the club’s Australian coach relies upon.
As per FBref, the English star ranks among the top 1% of attacking midfielders and wingers this season for pass completion and progressive carries, the top 12% for progressive passes and the top 8% for shot-creating actions per 90.
Such metrics have drawn him against Kulusevski as one of the Tottenham man’s most statistically similar players, suggesting he could dovetail right into the Londoners’ system.
There’s no denying, though, that Grealish has lost some of the original silk from his Villa days, when he was described as a “magician” by former Three Lions star Ashley Cole. Looking at his metrics from his final Premier League campaign in the Midlands against Kulusevski’s from this season, you see that Postecoglou could sign himself a new ‘linchpin’ to add depth and dynamism to the ranks.

Whether we will ever again see this one-time version of Grealish, who was indeed unplayable at times as he bamboozled defenders and picked out teammates with stylish, pinpoint passes, remains to be seen, but there’s no question Ange employs a freer, more expansive style than Guardiola, who revolutionised the way possession-based football is conducted but perhaps limits players like Grealish, pidgeonholing them into set roles.
Postecoglou could almost let Grealish run autonomously, take the leash off. Given that he likes to play between central attacking midfield and in a role on the left flank, there’s a good chance he’d be a fantastic stylistic fit too, easing Son’s burden as rumours of Richarlison’s summer sale persist.
There would, of course, be an element of risk to this transfer, and Levy would not facilitate a move without reducing Grealish’s staggering £300k-per-week salary, but it could be a somewhat shrewd deal for a player who has fallen from their perch as one of the country’s finest.
But he could yet bounce back, joining a Tottenham project that perhaps is only just getting going.

One former Tottenham Hotspur player has taken his career to new heights after leaving the club.
New Zealand ended the second day on 22 for 2, 580 runs behind, after Conway fell in controversial fashion
Andrew Fidel Fernando27-Sep-2024Stumps For Sri Lanka, it was a day of big numbers. Kamindu Mendis became the fastest man to 1000 Test runs in 75 years when he struck 182 not out. He equalled Don Bradman’s pace to the milestone, and sits third-equal alongside the greatest batter cricket has ever seen.Kusal Mendis made a hundred too – the tenth in his career – as he and Kamindu put on an unbeaten stand of 200 for the sixth wicket. All up, Sri Lanka got to 602 for 5 before declaring the moment Kamindu had crossed the 1000-run mark. They had batted 163.4 overs.Related
Kamindu equals Bradman, becomes fastest to 1000 Test runs in 75 years
For New Zealand, it was a day of much smaller numbers. They claimed only two wickets in the 73.4 overs they bowled on day two, with Glenn Phillips the only bowler to make breakthroughs. Towards the end of the day, they had 14 overs to face, and inside those, Tom Latham was out for 2, and Devon Conway dismissed – via a controversial third-umpire’s decision – for 9. They finished at 22 for 2, with hope getting slimmer by the over that they can meaningfully compete in this match. The pitch seemed to be taking substantial turn towards the end of the day, while Sri Lanka operated with the new ball at least.Kamindu’s progress from 51 overnight was largely in the morning session, in which he moved to 93. He scored heavily square of the wicket, as usual, rarely going several balls without finding a scoring shot. Through this period Phillips always seemed the likeliest bowler to get a wicket, thanks in part to the work he was putting on the ball.In fact, Phillips would get two, both off top edges as Angelo Mathews and Dhananjaya de Silva attempted sweep shots. Mathews had added only ten to his overnight 78, before de Silva made 44 in Kamindu’s company. But after lunch, Sri Lanka had it almost entirely their way. Kamindu moved unfussily to a fifth Test hundred and celebrated with trademark reserve. Kusal started slowly as New Zealand put together some tight spells after lunch – Mitchell Santner bowling with particular control – before he too began to find run-scoring easier, particularly thanks to his strong sweep shot. He made only 24 off his first 71 balls, with only one four on his ledger. But with batting to come, and Sri Lanka’s total growing gigantic now, he began to attack, going after Phillips first, as he got to his fifty in an over that he struck two fours and a six in, before settling into a more positive outlook in general. Twice he launched Ajaz Patel, who went wicketless in the innings and conceded 135, over deep midwicket for six. Kamindu also launched Ajaz down the ground for a six.Glenn Phillips was the only New Zealand bowler who looked like taking a wicket – he finished with three•AFP/Getty Images
The pair batted right through the middle session, going to tea at 135 and 70. The evening was about notching milestones – Kamindu making the second 150 of his career, before Kusal strode to his century, off 148 balls in the end. After that it was about letting Kamindu get to 178, so he could surpass the 1000-run career tally. Captain de Silva declared soon as Kamindu had launched Ravindra down the ground for the six that got him there.New Zealand faced a testing spell from Asitha Fernando first up, as the bowler got substantial late swing in to the left-handed openers. One of these balls moved back in to Latham in the first over, took his edge and flew to gully, where Pathum Nissanka gobbled it up.The dismissal of the struggling Conway in the ninth over of the innings was not as straightforward. Conway had defended at a turning ball from Prabath Jayasuriya, with the bowler and wicketkeeper appealing immediately – seemingly for the lbw. Umpire Nitin Menon gave Conway out, but when the batter reviewed, there was an obvious outside edge, before the ball struck thigh pad. However, after it struck pad, the ball had flown to de Silva at slip, who seemingly took a low catch. The replays did not conclusively show that he had his fingers under that ball, though it was close. The third umpire ruled it out, however, much to Conway’s displeasure.Such was the amount of turn Sri Lanka’s spinners were generating towards the end of the day, even Kane Williamson struggled. He was 6 off 42 at stumps, alongside nightwatchman Ajaz.
Scotland fast bowler Charlie Cassell has broken the record for the best figures on ODI debut by taking 7 for 21 in 5.4 overs against Oman in the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup League 2 match in Dundee. The record was held by South Africa’s Kagiso Rabada, who had taken 6 for 16 on his ODI debut against Bangladesh in July 2015.Cassell was added to the Scotland squad for the matches against Oman on July 15, as a replacement for fast bowler Chris Sole who was unavailable for personal reasons.
“You’ve come back from a huge setback, with that massive injury you had, put you out for a year and a bit,” Scotland captain Richie Berrington said when presenting Cassell with his cap before the game against Oman. “Just to see your resilience coming back, getting back on the park, and just love watching what you do at Forfs [Forfashire], and just the way how you hold yourself is incredible.”Cassell made a sensational start to his international career, trapping Zeeshan Maqsood lbw and bowling Ayaan Khan with the first two balls he bowled against Oman. He missed a hat-trick but then had Khalid Kail caught off his fourth delivery, and when he had Shoaib Khan caught in his second over, Cassell had astonishing figures of 1.3-1-0-4.Mehran Khan became Cassell’s fifth wicket. He then dismissed Pratik Athavale to join Rabada and West Indies’ Fidel Edwards as the only bowlers with six wickets on ODI debut, before ending Oman’s innings by having Bilal Khan caught behind to pick up a record seventh in his maiden international.Cassell’s 7 for 21 helped Scotland dismiss Oman for 91 in 21.4 overs, a target they chased down with eight wickets in hand and 196 balls remaining.

Newcastle United are on course to claim Champions League qualification and could now make a statement in the window by completing a deal for a prolific forward, according to a report.
Newcastle see off Chelsea to close in on Champions League
Eddie Howe is within touching distance of hearing the Champions League anthem blare out at St James’ Park once again after leading his side to a vital 2-0 victory over Chelsea on home soil.
Sandro Tonali and Bruno Guimaraes put the seal on a heated contest in the North East, setting up two mouthwatering clashes against Arsenal and Everton as Newcastle bid to complete a return to Europe’s top table.
Regardless of Premier League placement, Howe’s men hold a strong hand when it comes to the summer transfer window. Nevertheless, booking their place in the Champions League could prove to be a major selling point to prospective recruits.
Establishing some early direction on that front, Newcastle have set their sights on Girona midfielder Yangel Herrera and there are reports that a £21 million bid has now been submitted to land his services.
Looking closer to home, the Magpies also have Liverpool’s Harvey Elliott on their radar, though he would be a more expensive arrival as his price tag sits around the £50 million mark.

Either way, there is plenty of work to be done on Tyneside. Newcastle have shown a healthy level of ambition since PIF became involved with the club, but sustaining themselves among the elite now has to be the priority.
Taking note, Howe and company are now advancing to seal a deal for one of Europe’s most revered strikers ahead of the summer window.
Newcastle advancing in move to sign Victor Boniface
According to Africa Foot, Newcastle are in negotiations over a deal to sign Victor Boniface from Bayer Leverkusen and it is said that the talks in question are advancing, with discussions even taking place with the player’s representatives.
The report claims the Magpies are set to pay a fee of £42.2 million to land the Nigeria international, which could occur sooner rather than later as Howe looks for another forward to accompany Alexander Isak.

Labelled a “complete player” by Xabi Alonso, Boniface has notched 11 goals in all competitions this term, though has suffered hamstring problems in a campaign where Bayern Munich were able to reclaim the Bundesliga title. Speculation over a five-year deal on Tyneside is beginning to do the rounds. However, it remains to be seen if Newcastle can ratify the details required to pull off a statement signing.
With the summer window now creeping closer, bringing Boniface to the North East would be a marker of their ambition heading into 2025/26.
Nottingham Forest are now making enquiries over a summer deal for an “underrated” forward, who is expected to have an asking price of around £20m, according to a report.
Nottingham Forest gearing up for European adventure
Having managed to qualify for a European competition for the first time since 1996, Forest may need to improve their squad depth in the upcoming transfer window, and they have now started to identify potential targets in a range of different positions.
Despite missing out on Champions League due to the 1-0 defeat against Chelsea on the final day, the Tricky Trees may still be in a strong position to attract quality players from some top clubs, courtesy of securing qualification for the Europa Conference League.

With Morgan Gibbs-White being heavily linked with a move away from the City Ground, however, it may be particularly important to bring in new attacking options, who are capable of providing goals and assists on a regular basis.
According to a report from GiveMeSport, Nottingham Forest have a new target in mind who could fit the bill in that regard, having now started to make enquiries about a potential summer deal for SC Freiburg forward Ritsu Doan.
Forest are now stepping up their pursuit of Doan, but there could be competition for his signature from Borussia Dortmund and Eintracht Frankfurt, with the Bundesliga sides known to be admirers.

Frankfurt are currently preparing an offer for the Freiburg star, so the Tricky Trees may have to move quickly if they are to secure his signature, with an offer in the region of £20m likely to be deemed acceptable by the forward’s current employers.
"Underrated" Doan impressing in the Bundesliga
The Japanese winger enjoyed an impressive 2024-25 campaign in Germany, picking up a combined 19 goals and assists in 36 matches in all competitions, during which time he also received praise from football talent scout Jacek Kulig.
Not only that, but the 26-year-old is also willing and able to pitch in defensively, ranking in the 92nd percentile for tackles per 90, and the 95th percentile for clearances over the past year, when compared to other wingers and attacking midfielders.

As such, Doan could be a bargain signing for Nottingham Forest at just £20m this summer, at which point Nuno Espirito Santo may have to bring in at least one new winger, amid recent reports that Manchester United are now considering a move for Callum Hudson-Odoi.

Lyon won its appeal and has been reinstated to Ligue 1
Textor criticises the DNCG's decision-making process
Crystal Palace's Europa League spot now at risk

WHAT HAPPENED?
The seven-time French champions have successfully appealed their provisional relegation and have been reinstated to Ligue 1 for the upcoming season. This decision by the National Directorate of Management Control (DNCG), followed the club's demotion at the end of last season. Textor, whose Eagle Football Holdings owns a majority share in Lyon, had previously resigned from the club's board following the initial relegation, and has criticised the DNCG's decision process as "very subjective" and "not black and white."

THE BIGGER PICTURE
Textor questioned how a financially sound club like Lyon, with significant cash on hand and projected future revenue, could be relegated for sustainability. The Eagle group owner contrasted the DNCG's approach with UEFA's extremely professional sustainability review, which Lyon passed in the same week. Textor further accused the DNCG of being "very subjective," alleging they arbitrarily discounted substantial revenues such as player transfers and multi-club cash flows from Botafogo, claiming the DNCG would effectively count player revenues and transfer revenues as zero.
WHAT TEXTOR SAID
In a conversation with , When asked if he was the reason for Lyon's initial sanctions, Textor said: "I think I'm very much the issue."
The American businessman elaborated on his role, stating: "I'm attempting to be an agent of change. I think the governance in France is not working. We're trying to bring a Premier League model in which every club has a vote. It hasn't been done that way previously. The league is constantly being accused of corruption. There was just a claim against the president."
Textor further went on to criticise the DNCG: "The French Football Federation is trying to take over, which is a huge mistake. And I show up and we have a bunch of panels and I say I'm literally challenging the existence of the DNCG and whether or not they should exist. So if I'm talking about a new model, a reformist model where there is no DNCG but there are black and white rules like we have in the Premier League, I'm probably not the best guy to go in front of that same DNCG and ask their support. So yes, the problem is me."

WHAT NEXT FOR LYON?
Lyon's reinstatement to Ligue 1 clears the path for the club to participate in the Europa League next season. However, this decision has significant ramifications for Crystal Palace. Due to UEFA's multi-club ownership rules, Crystal Palace, despite winning the FA Cup and Textor selling his shares to New York Jets owner Woody Johnson, will likely be demoted to the Conference League. The Eagles will most certainly appeal should they be denied their first European campaign.
Celtic enter the market with a clear idea of where they need to strengthen and could now turn to a recognisable name to solve their quest to land another centre-forward, according to a report.
Celtic's quest to add attacking firepower
Adam Idah and Daizen Maeda ended the campaign as Celtic’s only two senior centre-forward options, while Johnny Kenny came in from the cold to supplement their output from the bench.
Late attempts in January to secure a striker fell through, despite the Bhoys’ failed pursuit of Danny Ings from West Ham United following Kyogo Furuhashi’s departure to Rennes.
Brendan Rodgers
Nevertheless, the calculated decision to stick with what they had at the time has allowed more time to make sure the right man arrives to bolster Brendan Rodgers’ pool of attacking talent.
Youssef El Kachati was mooted as a Celtic target. However, the former Morocco Under-23 international looks set to join NEC Nijmegen under freedom of contract on a three-year deal from Telstar.
Rodgers could potentially be left with more work to do on that front if Fenerbache or Tottenham step up their interest in Japanese forward Maeda. Both clubs are keen to deal him in, though have been told a fee in excess of £21 million is required for his services.

Left-back, centre midfield and on the flanks have been mooted as areas of the field where Celtic could look to enact squad surgery, whetting the appetite for a summer of significance before they enter the Champions League qualifiers at the playoff phase.
Encountering a quick turnaround, the Bhoys may now look to a former player who is available on the market to add some expertise in front of goal.
Celtic hero Kyogo Furuhashi wants to return to Parkhead
According to reports in France, Celtic are ‘ready’ to offer an olive branch to former striker Furuhashi following his frustrating spell at Rennes, where he has yet to score in six appearances.
The Ligue 1 outfit are set to part ways with the 30-year-old this summer, and it is now said that the Bhoys icon is in favour of completing a sensational return to Parkhead. However, Bournemouth are also lurking in the distance and could submit an offer.

Rennes boss Habib Beye is set to omit Furuhashi from his pre-season plans and will put him up for sale after he failed to live up to expectations at Roazhon Park.
Labelled “excellent” by Rodgers, he made his move to France for roughly £10 million mid-season, though he has only completed 120 minutes of football, coming mostly as a substitute.
Truthfully, it did seem like a strange move in January for the Nara-born man in light of his new club’s close brush with relegation, but a swift exit would suit all parties, including the player and his desire to be considered for Japan’s 2026 World Cup squad.
Whether he could achieve that feat at Celtic remains to be seen. Either way, the prospect of Furuhashi returning to Glasgow’s east end could soon become a reality.
