WHAT HAPPENED?
Gittens looked on the verge of sealing a transfer to the Blues, but a move never materialised ahead of the transfer deadline on Tuesday. Borussia Dortmund Sporting director Sebastian Kehl has now lifted the lid on why the young winger remained in Germany.

WHAT KEHL SAID
Speaking on the failed deal, Kehl said: "In the end, we didn’t come to an agreement on Jamie because we have different ideas about the player’s current value.
"But the talks were very, very respectful. We have been in very good dialogue with Chelsea for many years.
"And yet we have a different point of view and are happy that Jamie will now be part of our team at the Club World Cup and are delighted that he is staying.
"I’m not responsible for the late offer. But of course I still have to deal with it and that’s what we’ve done.
"Let’s see how things develop in the future."

THE BIGGER PICTURE
Chelsea had several bids knocked back for the 20-year-old, which reportedly led to the Englishman speeding away from the BVB training ground in fury. He has since been named in the Club World Cup squad, which starts this week.

WHAT NEXT FOR GITTENS?
Chelsea will likely approach Dortmund for Gittens again when the window re-opens, with the player hopeful that his current club will lower their £55million asking price.

Dhoni watches over Pant during India net session
India v England was meant to be something else. Mainly a sussing-out between the two pre-tournament favourites in anticipation of a real contest later, when something significant – like a World Cup – was on the line. That encounter may yet come about, but for England the moment is here and now. They might still have another shot in a few days but that would be leaving their fate to the mercy of factors beyond their control. The summer has truly arrived. The sun is glorious, the sales are on, the tan lotion is out, the parks are full of baby strollers and picnickers. Saturday was the hottest day of the season in Birmingham, and at Edgbaston a fresh pitch, bald and brown, is baking in the sun. Another age, another day, this would have been manna to India, but today it’s the answer to England’s prayers. They have been edgy, antsy and nervy, complaining about their own weather, conditions and former players. They will turn up at the match hoping that there is no deception here, and that the pitch is the kind of belter they have built their batting artillery for. What of India, then? Their semi-final berth isn’t sealed yet, but as the only unbeaten team in the tournament, and with the most games in hand of any side, they can afford a loss or two. Their World Cup campaign has chugged along without catching fire. They have lost one of their opening batsmen, a champion performer in ICC tournaments, and one of their opening bowlers; and their captain and best batsman hasn’t hit peak form. But there has been no panic yet. They have been stretched on a couple of occasions, but they have held on quite comfortably in the end.ALSO READ: England face India’s might as campaign nears point of no returnThere has been no swagger, but there has been a quiet confidence in how they have gone about their business. There has been no fixed formula to their success and they have found different ways to win. A tricky, potential banana-skin chase on a lively pitch against South Africa; top-order-driven big first-innings scores against Australia and Pakistan; the composed defence of a small total against Afghanistan; and blowing away West Indies after putting up a modest score. There have been different performers in different matches, and they have won the moments when games have been on the line. But England, if things go their way, can provide India with the challenge they haven’t encountered yet: having to chase a big total. Rarely can a score of over 350 be chased down without big contributions from three or four batsmen; India would have to look beyond Rohit Sharma to pull one off. Put another way, England have the opportunity to expose India’s soft centre.Remarkably, India’s strengths have been so enormous as to protect a weak spot that might have sunk other teams. Their top three, runs and impact combined, are perhaps the greatest in the history of Indian cricket. In the list of combined annual batting averages, they feature four times in the top five best years. They are easily the best in the world in the last two years.ALSO READ: Chopra: What India need to do against England’s key playersBut the worry for India is what happens when they have an off day. The last time they managed to score over 300 without a 50-plus score from any one of the top three was in January 2017. And an even more revealing statistic is the fact that only five times since 2017 have India managed to go past 300 without the top three contributing more than 50 per cent of the runs.In the past two years, India have tried 14 different batsmen for Nos 4-6 – more than any other team apart from Sri Lanka and West Indies – to settle for a combination that appears to be the weakest in their recent history, and certainly their weakest in a World Cup in this century. It is not Vijay Shankar’s fault that he has been thrust into the unfamiliar role of No. 4, a position occupied by Virat Kohli and Sachin Tendulkar in two of the last three World Cups. He is yet to score an ODI half-century in any position, and throughout his brief career for India, he has seemed to be in search of his ideal game.Kedar Jadhav, a late bloomer, began spunkily, but recurring injuries have meant a stop-start international career, and he has never quite managed to replicate the match-winning performances of his debut series.Which brings the spotlight to MS Dhoni. Irrespective of what happens here, his ODI career will be remembered for the finishes he engineered. The value he brings to Kohli on the field is apparent. Equally apparent, though, are his recent struggles. Just as almost every India chase during his heyday had Dhoni as the pivot, in recent times – as was evident against Afghanistan and West Indies – he has been part of nearly every Indian deceleration.MS Dhoni is a pale shadow of his former self, but he has the backing of his captain•Associated PressThe numbers bear this out. On the 37 occasions he has been required to bat more than 25 balls since the last World Cup, his strike rate in the first 25 balls has been 64.75, and only in 12 of those instances has he managed to catch up with the innings run rate. So, let alone propelling the innings ahead in the second half of the innings, in 25 of those 37 cases he scored at a lower rate that the innings run rate. But he has Kohli’s backing. One of the strengths of this Indian team has been how they insulate themselves from the noise outside, and how they assess what their wonderful bowling attack, easily the best in their history – and arguably the best in this World Cup – can defend.Speaking ahead of the game, Kohli re-emphasised that philosophy. “We’re not looking at entertainment out there in the middle,” he said when asked about the middle order. “We’re not looking at playing cricket which is looking flashy. We want to be calculated. We want to play percentage cricket, because, as I said, the team that handles pressure well is going to win the games that are hanging in the balance.”ALSO READ: ‘Dhoni’s experience has come good eight times out of ten’ – KohliOn Dhoni specifically, he repeated what has been said before. “He knows exactly what he needs to do. I don’t think he’s ever been a cricketer that’s had to be told what exactly he needs to do.”After the last game, he went into the nets. He worked hard. He put in a performance and got us to a winning total, and we won the game. We’re very, very happy and comfortable with where we stand as a team and how the batting is going at the moment.”Practice was optional on Saturday, but Dhoni – with Jadhav and Rishabh Pant, who is yet to play a match, alongside – was in the nets. He batted the longest, and a lot against spinners. One of the shots he practised repeatedly was the sweep, a stroke that he employs rarely. Like most of his strokes, it was his version, played wide of square leg.England will play two spinners tomorrow. And if India happen to be chasing a big score, the middle overs need to be productive. So far India have played the World Cup at their pace. To win it, though, they must be ready and equipped to match the tempo of their opponents when the occasion demands. For England, losing is barely an option. For India, it could be the opportunity to find some answers. Can they chase big? And how weak is their weakest link?
Kolkata Knight Riders have brought in Phil Salt as a replacement for Jason Roy for IPL 2024 after Roy pulled out citing “personal reasons”. Having remained unsold in the latest auction after representing Delhi Capitals last year, this will be Salt’s second season in the IPL. He was acquired by KKR at his reserve auction price of INR 1.5 crore (approx $181,000).Salt’s most recent T20I appearances came in December 2023 in the Caribbean, where he recorded scores of 40, 25, 109 not out, 119 and 38, topping the run-scoring charts with his 331 runs, at a strike rate of 185.95. Unfortunately for him, the two centuries came on December 16 and 19, the latter the date of the auction. With Roy opting out, though, he became an option for KKR.His 48-ball century in the fourth T20I in the West Indies is the joint-fastest in the format for England, and Salt now has a stellar T20 record, with 5308 runs from 221 innings at a strike rate of 153.41 and an average of 25.89. And he has played around the world, too, including in the BBL, the Caribbean Premier League, the Pakistan Super League, and in leagues in Sri Lanka, the UAE and South Africa.Roy, for his part, hasn’t had a regular run at the IPL despite his reputation as a short-format champion, even though he has been around a bit, playing for the now-defunct Gujarat Lions in 2017, Delhi Daredevils (now Capitals) in 2018, and subsequently for Sunrisers Hyderabad and KKR.This, though, isn’t the first time he has opted out of the IPL. He had withdrawn in 2020 (Capitals) for personal reasons and then in 2022 (Gujarat Titans) when he took an “indefinite break” from the game. The swap doesn’t change the overseas/Indian balance of the KKR line-up. Salt becomes an option for the opening slot along with Rahmanullah Gurbaz, with Sherfane Rutherford the other specialist overseas batter in the mix. That aside, they have old regulars Andre Russell and Sunil Narine, as well as quick bowlers Mitchell Starc and Dushmantha Chameera, who had earlier replaced Gus Atkinson, and Mujeeb Ur Rahman, the fingerspinner.Shreyas Iyer is the designated captain of the side, which will play its IPL 2024 opener on the second day of the tournament, March 23, against Sunrisers at home in Kolkata’s Eden Gardens.
Nicholas Pooran takes over MI Emirates captaincy from Pollard in the ILT20
ESPNcricinfo staff07-Jan-2024MI Cape Town captain Rashid Khan has been ruled out of the upcoming season of the SA20 as he continues to recover from a back surgery. The ace legspinner was named in the Afghanistan squad on January 6 for the three-match T20I series in India, but is unlikely to play, according to a statement from his cricket board (ACB). Rashid had also missed Afghanistan’s most recent T20I series in the UAE and the Big Bash League (BBL).Kieron Pollard will captain MI Cape Town in Rashid’s injury-enforced absence and will make his debut in the SA20. Pollard was also retained by MI Emirates for the ILT20 in 2024, but with its dates clashing with the SA20’s, Nicholas Pooran will take over MI Emirates captaincy from Pollard. A “skilful” Leeds United player’s time at Elland Road could come to an end this summer, with “interested parties” emerging to snap him up.
Farke future in doubt ahead of busy summer at Leeds
The Whites are still basking in the glory of sealing promotion from the Championship to the Premier League earlier this week after their 6-0 win at home to Stoke City, followed by Burnley beating Sheffield United at Turf Moor.
It’s now a case of trying to be crowned champions ahead of the Clarets in the final two matches of the season, amid ongoing doubts over Daniel Farke’s future, despite the excellent job he is doing. In fact, Sean Dyche has already emerged as a possible replacement, should the German be relieved of his duties.
In terms of potential summer signings for Leeds, West Ham midfielder Tomas Soucek has been linked with a move to the club, with the Czech reportedly open to the idea of sealing a switch to Elland Road.
The Whites are also said to be keen on signing Ipswich Town striker George Hirst, who has struggled for playing time in the Premier League this season, starting only three matches in the competition. For that reason, a fresh challenge may appeal, especially as the Tractor Boys are almost certainly heading back to the Championship.
"Skilful" Leeds player wanted by "interested parties"
According to Blick [via Sport Witness], Isaac Schmidt could leave Leeds at the end of the season, potentially not being seen as an important player upon the Whites’ return to the Premier League. The need to strengthen will make it hard for him to earn regular minutes and there are claimed to be “numerous interested parties” in the 25-year-old.
Isaac Schmidt for Leeds United.
This summer does feel like the right time for Leeds and Schmidt to part ways, even though the two-cap Switzerland international did feature in the aforementioned thumping of Stoke, playing for 13 minutes after coming on as a substitute.
He hasn’t started once in the Championship all season, instead coming on 12 times and playing just 71 minutes in total in the competition, so it’s hard to see his situation changing when the Whites are playing at an even higher level next season.

Schmidt’s move to Leeds simply hasn’t worked out to date, having arrived from St. Gallen later year, even though Siwzrterland manager Murat Yakin has spoken positively about him, saying: “I really liked Isaac! He was skillful, he won all his duels and he was good offensively.”
For Leeds, it’s now a case of the Whites nailing their summer transfer business, hopefully aided by plenty of funds being made available by 49ers Enterprises.
Leeds could axe Farke by hiring "the most underrated manager in the PL"
Leeds United could be set to make a huge decision over the future of Daniel Farke this summer.
ByEthan Lamb Apr 24, 2025
A big decision needs to be made regarding Farke’s future, too, either retaining his services or hiring a replacement who has enough time to bring in the right players.
A new club have emerged in the race to sign an “excellent” Wolves player permanently in the summer transfer window, according to a fresh claim.
Wolves exit rumours emerge
Wanderers will be looking for plenty of incoming transfer business at the end of the season, but doubts surround the futures of several current players.
Matheus Cunha is the most high-profile Wolves hero who looks the most likely to move on this summer, with the Brazilian far from without suitors. A number of top clubs are keen on snapping him up, and Vitor Pereira will know that he has a battle on his hands to keep hold of him.
Wolverhampton Wanderers' MatheusCunhacelebrates scoring their fourth goal
Elsewhere, Tommy Doyle has also been linked with leaving Molineux before next season gets underway, with journalist Graeme Bailey explaining the situation: “It seems Doyle is increasingly likely to go. There’s a lot of Championship interest in him, we’re going to see a fair few Championship players go, so there’s plenty of opportunities for quite a few teams [to sign him]. He’ll find a club, he’ll be alright, it’s just he’s not particularly suited to Vitor Pereira’s system, that’s just how it is.”
Fabio Silva is currently out on loan at Las Palmas and seemingly doesn’t have a long-term future, with prevuous suggeston they were ready to sell for £25m. Now, a new update has dropped regarding the Portuguese attacker, having reportedly held talks with Eintracht Frankfurt earlier this week.
"Excellent" £17m Wolves ace in talks to join new club
According to Sky Sports journalist Florian Plettenberg on X, VfL Wolfsburg have now held talks to sign Silva from Wolves this summer, providing competition for Frankfurt. Interestingly, Wolves’ asking price has dropped from £25m to £17m.
This summer definitely feels like the right time for Wolves to sell Silva, even though Stuart McCall hailed him during a loan stint at Scottish Premiership giants Rangers, saying:
“The one thing Silva has done well today, because he’s not been on the ball much, is his movement. It has been excellent. Lovely ball, really nice finish.”
As mentioned, the 22-year-old has been a huge disappointment for Wolves overall, scoring just five goals and registering only six assists in 72 appearances for Wanderers. Given the money they spent on him, that is a dismal return, and while he is still a young player, it is hard to see him ever being good enough for the Premier League.
Ivory Coast star likely to move in summer amid Everton and Wolves interest
Both sides are interested in bringing him to the Premier League.
BySean Markus Clifford Apr 19, 2025
If Wolves could get the £17m that they crave for Silva’s signature this summer, it could end up being seen as good business, even if it is a loss on what they paid Porto for him initially back in 2020.

Ange Postecoglou heading towards Spurs exit after disappointing season

Levy set for "big decision" as Tottenham look at hiring "master" £8m manager
Ange Postecoglou is increasingly likely to leave at the end of 24/25.

The north Londoners face off against Norwegian minnows Bodo/Glimt in the Europa League semi-finals after beating Eintracht Frankfurt in the last round, and if they get past this year’s fairy-tale overachievers, then Postecoglou will be just one game away from ending Tottenham’s trophy drought.

It would be the perfect end to an otherwise disappointing domestic campaign, with Spurs on course for their worst ever finish in the Premier League and just one match away from equalling their record for most defeats in a single season.
Postecoglou has been dealt a plethora of injuries to key players throughout 2024/2025, which undoubtedly crippled Spurs’ chances of success, but there is a serious argument that 16th in the league still simply isn’t good enough.
Unrest surrounds the club right now, not just regarding Postecoglou, but also the current running of Tottenham by chairman Daniel Levy and ENIC, with disgruntled supporters protesting against their ownership on a consistent basis.
Whoever potentially succeeds Postecoglou will have a mighty job on their hands, and Levy needs to get this appointment amid mounting pressure.
Tottenham are believed to be targeting Bournemouth’s Andoni Iraola and Fulham’s Marco Silva, according to multiple reports, while the likes of Crystal Palace boss Oliver Glasner and Brentford’s Thomas Frank have also been linked.
Tottenham want "star status" manager to replace Ange Postecoglou
However, while these names have performed impressively on shoe-string budgets, the aforementioned tacticians boast just one major trophy between them.
Some critics may be underwhelmed by this, but according to former Spurs scout Mick Brown, Tottenham are looking at a “higher profile” manager with “star status” to come in and “transform” them into a winning team.
“There’s no doubt Frank has done a fantastic job at Brentford,” Brown told Football Insider, commenting on the links to the Bees boss.
“But’s a completely different job to managing Tottenham Hotspur. His job at Brentford cannot be questioned, he’s done better than many others would have, and everybody I speak to has a lot of respect and admiration for him.
“The issue is, Tottenham have had about 15 well-respected managers who have done jobs elsewhere.
“I think they’re looking at higher-profile managers to come in and transform them into a winning outfit.
“I don’t know whether Frank meets that star status they’re looking for.”
According to some reports, Inter Milan boss Simone Inzaghi has admirers at Spurs, and the Italian would definitely fall into the high-profile category after three successful years at the San Siro.
The spinner’s opening spell saw West Indies bowl Uganda out for 39
Andrew Fidel Fernando09-Jun-20242:20
Bishop: WI batters showed intent and positivity
Akeal Hosein scythed through Uganda in a sublime opening spell, using his swinging seam-up delivery to devastating effect, plundering five wickets for 11 runs. That spell sent West Indies hurtling to a 134-run victory on a slow Providence deck. The seamers backed Hosein’s spell up, delivering some excellent wicket balls of their own. Together they sent Uganda crashing to 39 all out – the joint-lowest total in the T20 World Cup.Earlier, in difficult batting conditions, Johnson Charles struck 44 off 42, and Andre Russell cracked 30 not out off 17, as West Indies willed their way to 173 for 5.Uganda were doughty with the ball and, despite at least two missed chances, generally good in the field. Though several West Indies batters made starts, Uganda’s slow bowlers, in particular, found ways to peg them back.Hosein wrecks Uganda’s top orderIt was a spell of dreams. From the outset, it was clear that when Hosein chose to put revs into the ball, he would get good turn the first ball – a left-arm spinner’s stock ball – ragging past Roger Mukasa’s outside edge. But it was Hosein’s mastery of drift/swing and his impeccable control that gave him the most venom in this game. The next ball to Mukasa was a seam-up ball that curved in and struck the sweeping batter in front of middle and off. Next over, the ball that struck Alpesh Ramjani in front of middle had also moved in the air, late.Riazat Ali Shah, perhaps Uganda’s best batter, was beaten even more emphatically by the swinging seam-up ball, watching it crash into middle stump. Then in his last over – the seventh of the innings – Hosein dismissed Dinesh Nakrani and Kenneth Waiswa, the first bowled and the second another lbw, again using movement in the air before pitching. He left Uganda flailing at 23 for 7, all their batting resources spent, and with little hope of even surpassing the 58 they had made against Afghanistan last week – their previous lowest score.Rovman Powell was off the blocks quickly•Associated Press
Charles steadies West Indies in the early goingIt’s not often you would describe a Charles innings as an anchor, but this is effectively what it was in this game. Though he struck some early fours through cover before working himself up to some six-hitting, he still only had 24 off 21 balls at the end of the powerplay. But his presence at the crease allowed other batters to play more aggressively, most in the West Indies top order just waiting for balls in their area to hit sixes off. Rovman Powell struck the biggest one of the day – his 107-metre monster down the ground off Frank Nsubuga’s bowling going over the top of one of the stands.Russell and Rutherford finish strongIt says something about the nature of this surface, and also the tenacity of Uganda’s bowling, that West Indies did not manage a six after the 14th over. But Russell and Sherfane Rutherford still found ways to provide West Indies with that final burst. Russell did this most effectively in the final over, when he blasted Cosmas Kyewuta for two fours through point, then later found another couple of boundaries off the outside edge. All up, West Indies made 45 off the last four overs.
Hardik Pandya’s return to the Wankhede Stadium as Mumbai Indians captain was far from a fairy tale, as the five-time champions lost their third game in a row, this time with 27 balls to spare. Rajasthan Royals – led by superb performances from Trent Boult, Yuzvendra Chahal and Riyan Parag – gave them a thorough hammering to move to No. 1 on the points table with a hat-trick of victories.Boult left Mumbai gasping within minutes of the start of the match when he dismissed Rohit Sharma, Naman Dhir and Dewald Brevis for first-ball ducks in his first eight balls. His 3 for 22 was only matched by the 3 for 11 taken by Chahal, who controlled the middle overs to ensure Mumbai did not stage a batting comeback.Chasing 126 for victory, Parag dragged Royals out of some early trouble and shepherded the chase. He finished the game with six, six, and four to stay unbeaten on 54 to take the No. 1 spot on the orange cap leaderboard – tied on runs with Virat Kohli but ahead of strike rate.
Boult sets up the demolition job
Rohit had all the support from the crowd, who chanted his name even as they booed Hardik, but his time with the bat lasted only one ball when Boult got one to swing away from him and get him to edge it behind. Next ball, Boult swung it the other way, getting a full ball to nip into Dhir. With two wickets gone inside the game’s first six balls, Mumbai brought in impact sub Brevis in the second over itself, but he too fell prey to the ball angling across, edging it to Nandre Burger at short third.Trent Boult picked up three wickets in his first eight balls – par for the course•Associated Press
With three wickets in his first eight deliveries of the game, Boult gave Royals an advantage that they never let go.
Scintillating Chahal
After Boult’s searing opening spell, Burger got in on the action. Playing as a replacement for the injured Sandeep Sharma, Burger came around the wicket to pick off Ishan Kishan with a length ball that angled away and took his edge. With Mumbai Indians 20 for 4 in three-and-a-half overs, Tilak Varma and Hardik looked to build a recovery, almost succeeding with a 56-run fifth-wicket stand, but Chahal dismissed both batters to snuff out any chance of a comeback. After hitting six boundaries early in his innings, Hardik fell on 34 when he holed out at mid-on trying to hit Chahal. Tilak was sent packing on 32 soon after when Chahal’s googly was edged to R Ashwin at short third.Chahal finished his spell with the wicket of Gerald Coetzee late in the innings. In all, 16 of Chahal’s 24 deliveries were dots, and his four-over spell ended with an economy of only 2.75.A late wicket for Avesh Khan and a second for Burger ensured Mumbai finished on 125 for 9, a score too low on a surface that is traditionally batting-friendly.
Madhwal comes good on season debut
Only wickets could save Mumbai after that batting effort, and they played their trump card early when Jasprit Bumrah shared the new ball, with Kwena Maphaka, for the first time this season. But even though Bumrah bowled three of the six powerplay overs, the Royals batters did not give a wicket away to him. Yashasvi Jaiswal fell to Maphaka in the first over itself, while the other three wickets went to Akash Madhwal, playing his first game of IPL 2024.Madhwal struck with the second ball of his spell when he got Sanju Samson to chop on to his stumps, and added a second when Jos Buttler pulled him to fine leg. He added a third later, in the 13th over, when Ashwin sent a leading edge off a short delivery to point. Madhwal was the standout bowler for Mumbai Indians with 3 for 20.Riyan Parag scored another half-century, and claimed the orange cap•BCCI
Parag’s form continues
Parag walked in ranked No. 5 on the orange cap list and finished the day with the cap on his head. With no real scoreboard pressure on this occasion, No. 4 Parag played risk-free cricket early on, but tore into Coetzee with four fours and two sixes. It all started with back-to-back boundaries off Coetzee in the eighth over, followed by another lofted four over the covers in the 11th. He then smoked Bumrah through mid-off in the 14th over before depositing Piyush Chawla over long-on in the 15th.Parag then put the finishing touches on the result by hammering Coetzee for 16 runs off the first three balls of the 16th over. The first ball went for a clubbed six over the covers, and he reached his fifty next ball with a slog over midwicket. The winning runs came over wicketkeeper Kishan’s head and sent Royals and Mumbai Indians to opposite ends of the points table.
