Slot can axe Jota for Liverpool teen who's a "better finisher than Nunez"

da esport bet: In the wake of Liverpool’s leave-it-late victory over West Ham United to move within touching distance of claiming the Premier League, both Arne Slot and Virgil van Dijk have alluded to a big summer of investment.

da bet7: The runaway leaders have surprised everyone in ending Manchester City’s four-peat and leapfrogging Arsenal, who look set to complete their third second-place finish on the trot.

However, Liverpool definitely haven’t been perfect, with several first-team regulars struggling to prove themselves under new management and seemingly heading toward a summer exit.

From an attacking sense, Darwin Nunez is the most likely name to be drawn to mind, but he’s not the only one, oh no, Diogo Jota has also flattered to deceive for months and could be sold this summer.

Why Liverpool should sell Diogo Jota

Nunez has been consigned to the margins all season – the Uruguayan wasn’t even a part of Liverpool’s matchday squad against West Ham – but Jota has been utilised in a more important manner.

Liverpool striker Diogo Jota

However, injuries have managed to scupper Jota’s hopes of a standout season. The 28-year-old has only started 13 Premier League matches all year, with the goals drying up since overcoming setbacks across winter and before.

Indeed, the Portugal international has only scored twice across his past 13 fixtures in all competitions, with the combination of injuries and goalscoring impotence highlighting the need for a new centre-forward.

Liverpool need to aim for the stars. Some reports claim that Newcastle United’s Alexander Isak is very much the dream target this summer, but at around €150m (£130m), the Reds might need to part ways with more than just Nunez.

Chalkboard

Football FanCast’s Chalkboard series presents a tactical discussion from around the global game.

Luckily, Slot knows that he has an up-and-coming star who could take Jota’s place and save Liverpool a whole load of money.

Liverpool already have a perfect Jota heir

Who knows how Liverpool’s transfer window will pan out. In fairness, though, there’s every chance that the Reds could launch a stunning move for a player of Isak’s ilk.

Liverpool striker Diogo Jota

Finances are good at Anfield, but those working away in the offices will always look for a shrewd solution if one presents itself, and promoting Jayden Danns through fire sales of Nunez and Jota could be the perfect, resourceful way to take Liverpool forward next season.

Danns, 19, has suffered with a few unfortunate injuries over the past year, ending his January agreement to move on loan to Championship promotion hopefuls Sunderland before he had even kicked a ball.

Jayden Danns scores for Liverpool.

But there’s no mistaking the teenage striker is one to watch, with analyst Ben Mattinson already pronouncing him to be “a better finisher than Nunez.”

Based on the evidence of the past three years, this isn’t all that hard, but it does highlight the natural ball-striking prowess that Danns can develop over the coming years, having already scored three times for Liverpool across just nine professional appearances.

Serving as Isak’s understudy, for example, Danns could save Liverpool millions and allow them to stock up the war chest through sales of Liverpool’s existing – and struggling – number nines.

With attention needed across various other areas of the park, this might just be the perfect way to keep Slot’s side firing while strengthening across key areas too.

McKenna has found an Ipswich "warrior" who's become as undroppable as Delap

The next seven matches of Ipswich Town’s voyage this season in the Premier League rest on attempting to restore some pride, with survival looking a very distant possibility at this moment in time.

12 points is now the sizeable gap between Wolverhampton Wanderers sat in 17th spot and the Tractor Boys stuck in that last relegation spot in the division in 18th, meaning upcoming games against the likes of Chelsea, Arsenal and Newcastle United this April are somewhat free hits.

Ipswich Town'sLiamDelapapplauds fans after the match

If the Suffolk underdogs stand any chance at picking up a shock result at Stamford Bridge later today, they will need Liam Delap to be firing on all cylinders, with the ex-Manchester City man also eager to keep up his rich vein of goalscoring form before a likely summer departure.

Delap's goalscoring heroics this season

Even as Ipswich sink closer and closer to the relegation drop, Delap continues to be a blistering goal machine.

Indeed, Delap would initially gift his side the lead against Wolves before Vitor Pereira’s men mounted a comeback, with the 22-year-old also on the scoresheet the match before when Kieran McKenna’s side surprised AFC Bournemouth on their own patch.

These two strikes in quick succession have bumped up the clinical number 19’s goal count in the Premier League to a high 12, with one of those goals even coming about in the reverse fixture when Delap and Co unsettled Enzo Maresca’s visitors in a 2-1 victory.

Even if Delap is at his free-flowing best, Ipswich will know a staunch defensive effort will still be necessary to secure a surprise result in West London, with this defender – who has now become as undroppable as the £30m striker – also needing to be at his imposing peak.

The Ipswich "warrior" now as undroppable as Delap

It has been a deeply frustrating campaign at Portman Road, with terrific attacking displays often let down by porous defensive offerings, seen in Ipswich conceding a steep 65 goals across their 31 games to date.

But, there have been some standout performers at the back regardless of error-strewn performances regularly seeping into their game defensively, with Dara O’Shea one figure that’s managed to cement himself as a first-team regular.

Looking at the table above, O’Shea has managed to show off his well-rounded game as a defender versus Andoni Iraola’s Cherries and the Old Gold, with the Irishman putting in a far more back-to-basics display on the South Coast when tallying up 14 clearances in the slim away win.

Only losing out on one of his duels from six attempted too, the ex-West Bromwich Albion colossus definitely lived up to his previous “warrior” billing from one of his former managers in Valerien Ismael.

But, he also showed off his composed game against Pereira’s side when assisting the only goal of the afternoon, with his concrete presence in McKenna’s starting XI only growing stronger off the back of these standout showings, even as relegation looms large.

Not missing a single minute of Premier League action that has been available to him this year, the 6 foot 1 powerhouse also has bags of Championship experience under his belt with 70 career games at the level managed, meaning his minutes won’t deplete whatsoever when second-tier football likely returns to Portman Road.

Ipswich Town managerKieranMcKenna

Before that eventuality beckons, however, Ipswich will want to add as many points to their low top-flight tally as they can, starting potentially with a bolt from the blue result at Stamford Bridge.

Leeds: 49ers now keen to sign new £2.5m French forward ahead of Celtic

Leeds United are interested in signing an in-demand French striker who is also wanted by Scottish giants Celtic.

Leeds transfer rumours following promotion to the Premier League

The Whites and Daniel Farke are preparing for life back in the Premier League following a successful Championship campaign.

Promotion was secured for Leeds over the Easter weekend which resulted in a party at Elland Road on Monday evening. Farke’s side secured wins over Oxford United and Stoke City, whereas Sheffield United fell to defeat against Burnley to guarantee a top two finish for the Whites and the Clarets.

Talking after sealing promotion to the Premier League, captain Ethan Ampadu said: “It’s amazing. If you look at the scenes here, as it was after the final whistle, just pure excitement. Within ourselves we’ve got another target, so we can enjoy this now, but we’ve got another target we want to achieve. But right now, it’s very good.”

Centre-back Joe Rodon added: “For me it hasn’t sunk in yet. I don’t think it will until the end of the season, but I’m just delighted for everyone involved with the club, the fans and what it means to them. It’s what everyone has worked for all season and I’m buzzing.”

With top flight football back in Yorkshire for the 2025/26 season, the 49ers Enterprises may look to splash the cash on several new signings, and a new centre-forward is thought to be on the wishlist.

There are doubts at Leeds over Joel Piroe’s ability in the top flight, despite the striker scoring four goals in the first half against Stoke on Monday. There are also concerns over Patrick Bamford.

There have been some forwards linked with moves to Elland Road recently, including AS Roma’s Tammy Abraham. However, a new up-and-coming young forward appears to be on the Leeds radar, going off a recent update.

Leeds keen on French forward Moussa Soumano

According to Africa Foot, Leeds are one of several sides keen on Ajaccio forward Moussa Soumano. Aged just 19, Soumano is also wanted by Celtic and Leicester City, whereas Brentford have already made an offer worth €3m (£2.5m) to sign the attacker.

Also capable of playing on the wing if required, Soumano has scored five goals and provided two assists in 66 appearances for his current employers. Not exactly a prolific record, however, the 6ft French attacker has been hailed as a promising talent and is ‘considered one of the great hopes of Corsican football’ in Africa Foot’s report.

Soumano could be one to keep an eye on, with Leeds potentially looking to bring in some talented teenagers alongside some big names, just like they did with Crysencio Summerville and Mateo Joseph when they were last in the top flight.

If Kerkez completes this Liverpool transfer, he is likely to compete with left-back Andrew Robertson and Konstantinos Tsimikas in Arne Slot's starting XI next season as the Reds try to retain their Premier League title.

"Great" Leeds absentee steps up recovery and could now feature against QPR

With their sights set on promotion, Leeds United are set to be handed the boost of a returning player when they square off against Queens Park Rangers this weekend.

Leeds recieve fresh injury boost

There may have been a sigh of relief around Elland Road when Leeds overcame Millwall to win 2-0 and instantly got back to winning ways after suffering shock defeat against Portsmouth just days before. Back on track, Daniel Farke’s side now sit two points above second placed Sheffield United and four clear of Burnley in third with just nine games left to play in the Championship.

Those in Yorkshire will be more aware than most that it’s not done until their place in the Premier League is confirmed and, as ever, they face a nervous final stretch towards potential promotion.

With nine finals remaining, Farke will need to use the quality of his squad more than ever. It is a side full of talent, from the likes of Manor Solomon – who has rediscovered his best form – to important midfielder Ao Tanaka. Now, that side must simply hold their nerve.

What will undoubtedly help them do just that is the boost of recent injury news. As revealed by Farke, Isaac Schmidt is now set to make his return against QPR after returning to training. The defender missed the victory over Millwall through illness but has seemingly since recovered in time for this weekend.

Speaking to reporters about his side’s injury status, Farke said: “As it stands I hope I have that whole group plus Isaac Schmidt to pick from for the travelling squad.

“In terms of the starting line-up and who has recovered, we’ll make some late decisions. This turnaround is a bit more tricky. We had more or less 80 hours to recover for Millwall, this time around just over 60 hours. It will be a bit more tricky. Travelling is involved of course.”

Every player counts for Leeds in vital run

Whilst Schmidt hasn’t been one to steal the headlines throughout the current campaign, often watching on from the bench, he could be thrust into Farke’s side at any given moment and he, like others, must help the Whites in their push for promotion.

Having arrived in the summer, Schmidt has found himself at the centre of Farke’s praise even whilst playing a cameo role. The former Norwich City boss told reporters earlier this season: “Great guy, a bit like I mention also about all our new signings.

Isaac Schmidt for Leeds United.

“I think still at a really good age because he is more likely still on his way up the hill in his career. Great mentality, also desperate to play for the shirt, desperate to play for us, great character, so really nice guy and really nice team-mate.”

Now back from a brief absence, Schmidt will no doubt have his sights set on putting every minute that he does receive to good use as he aims to leave his mark on Leeds’ promotion push.

India have barred fans from watching and media from filming their nets. Security at Newlands says it is the team management’s instructions. Centurion. Possibly the best cricket-viewing experience. People don’t go up into the stands here. They are at street level. One is the No. 1 Test bowler in the world, the other looks like a veteran of Test cricket already. The place fell into the hands of criminals in the 1980s and was reduced to a slum. Garbage piled up in the hollow central core. Gangs operated from the building. Law enforcement could not enter, and used to fly past in helicopters to keep an eye on things. Legend has it that the windows with black curtains had gangsters behind them, red ones prostitutes, and white ones families. When the building was reclaimed in the early 2000s, hoping to get it ready in time for the football World Cup, they discovered, among other things, dead bodies in the garbage. The place was called Suicide City at one point because of how many people jumped off. Then “Coca Cola building”, because of the sign advertising the soft drink on top. The sign now is for Vodacom, and Ponte City is also known as the Vodacom Building. Running joke: the Vodacom signal is weakest here.

Is now a proper residential building with strict rules. Fingerprint recognition at entry gates. No visitors apart from registered residents post 7pm. Wary of letting things get out of hand again.January 22

Gumtree. A classifieds wall in Hillbrow, one of Johannesburg’s “grey” areas – a reference to the mix of black and white. People of this inner-city neighbourhood paste flyers with their requirements on the wall. And then on top of older ones. Most of them are for rooms to let. Balconies to let too, which have been enclosed to become rooms, like in Bombay flats.January 23
Pitch for the third Test, at the Wanderers, is hard, green, and has cracks. If India were to stick a requirement for a pitch on Gumtree, it would be for something like this. It brings their pace bowlers into play big time. Of course it is challenging, but Kohli and India look forward to the challenge. Also talk about how they have never lost at Wanderers. “Something about this ground,” Kohli says.January 24
India bring Rahane back, and make the bold move of batting first despite the pressure their batsmen are under. They bat with courage and skill to end up with 187, which is definitely above par. South Africa rue two dropped catches that allow Kohli’s otherwise excellent knock to go past 50. Cheteshwar Pujara goes 53 balls without opening his account but ends up with a highly valuable fifty.Hugh Masekela died yesterday. Father of South African jazz. Known for anti-apartheid songs. “Bra” Hugh’s music plays on the PA during breaks. Rains in the evening. Must have been a great man.January 25

Hashim Amla goes one better than Pujara and Kohli: plays with the control of Pujara and strike rate of Kohli. His 61 keeps South Africa on the path to a lead but then they collapse to give up the advantage and end with just a seven-run advantage. Quality of pitch now being questioned. Not fair to label just Nagpur and Pune extreme.January 26

M Vijay is hit five times in one session but fights through for 25 runs. Kohli is rapped on the gloves. In the evening, Dean Elgar is hit four times, the fourth one causing a suspension of play. South Africa caught between a rock and a hard place. Can save Test if they don’t show keenness to continue, but if the match is abandoned, the Wanderers could lose all fixtures for one year. Leave matters in match referee’s hands. Play set to resume next day. Only fair because India have already braved dangerous pitch and are now sensing a rare Test win. Time to pause and think of skill required to negotiate high-speed bowling on good surfaces, let alone this one, with exaggerated bounce and seam movement.January 27
After Amla and Elgar bring back memories of India’s last Test at the Wanderers, when South Africa nearly chased down 458, India rush back into the game, inducing a collapse of 9 for 53. Elgar fights bravely and carries his bat with 86 runs. Kohli’s belief in his team and his methods is vindicated, but after the euphoria, there is a feeling of missed opportunities. What if Rahane had played earlier? What if Bhuvneshwar Kumar, India’s second-best batsman and best bowler in the series, had not been dropped for the second Test? What if India have prepared better? What if they had got their slip catching in order? We will never know.

He lost 100% duels: Ange must axe anonymous 5/10 Spurs dud after Chelsea

Well, that probably wasn’t the return from the international break that Tottenham Hotspur fans had been hoping for.

Ange Postecoglou’s side travelled to West London to try and get one over Chelsea in the Premier League last night, but instead of coming out swinging as they have so often, and sometimes to their own detriment, this season, they were utterly dismal.

Granted, it looked like Pape Matar Sarr had equalised in the second half, but he fouled Moises Caicedo in the buildup, and it was chalked off, much to the chagrin of the increasingly under-pressure Australian, who made his feelings clear after the game.

There were incredibly disappointing performances across the pitch for the visitors, but there was one player who might as well have stayed in the dressing room and, as such, has to be dropped ahead of the weekend’s game against Southampton.

Spurs' poor performers

Before getting to the player in question, it’s only fair we go over some of the other starters who let the fans down last night, as, unfortunately, there were quite a few, including Cristian Romero.

The fiery World Cup winner can sometimes be exactly the sort of player you want in an intense derby, but instead of marshalling the backline and making life difficult for the Blues’ attack, he seemed off the pace, overly emotional, and was running back towards goal more often than he should have been and picked up a 5/10 match rating from journalist Alasdair Gold.

However, there is an argument that the Argentine’s defensive partner, Micky van de Ven, had an even worse game at Stamford Bridge.

The former Wolfsburg gem was ironically starting his first league game since the reverse fixture against the Pensioners in December, and whether it was rustiness or something else, he looked even more lost than Romero.

For example, it was his clearance that came off Jackson early in the first half and almost opened the scoring, and then in the second half he was pulled out of position by the striker for Enzo Fernández’s goal and was fully deserving of the 5/10 rating he received from Gold.

At the other end of the pitch, it was another night to forget for the club’s record signing, Dominic Solanke.

The former Bournemouth star did make the right runs at times but simply wasn’t a factor for the vast majority of the game, and while he has to rely on the service of his teammates to an extent, the best strikers in the world will often make their own chances.

Dominic Solanke and Ange Postecoglou

However, while the Basingstoke-born poacher was certainly ineffective, another starter was even worse and must be dropped.

The Spurs star who has to be dropped

In reality, you could make a serious argument about any of the aforementioned players being dropped for the weekend, but when it comes down to it, James Maddison put in the most frustratingly dismal display for Spurs last night.

Chalkboard

Football FanCast’s Chalkboard series presents a tactical discussion from around the global game.

The former Leicester City star, who is a part of the club’s leadership group, started in a midfield three with 19-year-old Lucas Bergvall and Rodrigo Bentancur, so while they can certainly help out with attacks, the onus to get the midfield ticking was on him.

Unfortunately, he did not achieve this in the slightest, and instead of pulling the strings and taking advantage of a Chelsea side who had won just four of their ten league games since the turn of the year, he practically disappeared from the encounter.

It might sound harsh, but it’s an opinion shared by Gold, who also awarded the Englishman a 5/10 on the night, writing that even when he did try to make something happen, ‘nothing came off for him.’

Unsurprisingly, his lacklustre showing is reflected in his statistics.

In 81 minutes of inaction, the 28-year-old amassed a paltry combined expected goal and assists figure of just 0.11, failed to score or assist a goal, took 41 touches but played just a single key pass, failed in 100% of his crosses, failed to take a shot on target, didn’t attempt a single dribble, lost the ball four times, lost 100% of his duels and was offside twice.

Ultimately, it was a dreadful performance from the entire Spurs team, but Maddison was particularly disappointing and, therefore, must be dropped from the starting lineup.

Clash of misfiring top orders as Titans and Kings seek crucial points

The two sides have the slowest scoring top three in the competition, and find themselves near the bottom of the table

Mullanpur, 7.30pm IST (2pm GMT)Big picture – Top-order troublesIn an IPL season where batting has reached new heights, both Punjab Kings and Gujarat Titans are circling the drain, their top-order performances in particular letting the team down on various occasions.Even after seven matches, Shubman Gill is the only half-centurion in his team. Sam Curran, though he was addressing the incredible rise of Ashutosh Sharma, couldn’t help but voice his disappointment at the lack of support.Related

IPL 2024, a turbo-charged, batter-dominated season like no other

Big scores, of course, aren’t always necessary in T20 cricket. Rapid 20s and 30s are often enough to put up a team on top. But Kings (SR 128.80) and Titans (130.54) aren’t even managing that. In fact, they have the slowest scoring top three in the competition.Rashid Khan, Shashank Singh and Ashutosh have each bailed their sides out of trouble coming in down the order a fair few times but sooner or later, the others are going to have to start pulling their weight.Form guidePBKS LLLWL (Most recent match first)

Last Sunday, Kings said Shikhar Dhawan would need a week’s time to recover from a shoulder injury. So this game might be coming a touch too early for him. Titans are likely to continue using R Sai Kishore or Shahrukh Khan as their Impact Sub depending on the need of the hour. They may also consider bringing in Azmatullah Omarzai or Josh Little for Noor Ahmad given the lack of help for spin in Mullanpur.Probable XII: 1 Wriddhiman Saha (wk), 2 Shubman Gill (capt), , 4 David Miller, 5 Abhinav Manohar, 6 Rahul Tewatia, 7 Rashid Khan, 8 Mohit Sharma, 9 Azmatullah Omarzai/Josh Little, 10 Spencer Johnson, 11 Sandeep Warrier, Ashutosh Sharma played an innings to remember against Mumbai•BCCI

In the spotlight – Jitesh Sharma and David MillerWhen the IPL began, Jitesh Sharma might have considered himself as India’s first-choice wicketkeeper. Now, after seven innings in which he has been unable to cross 30, and showing worrying signs of regression against pace bowling (average of 11.8 and strike rate of 109.2 in 2024 as opposed to 33.7 and 182.4 in his breakout year in 2022), he might have dropped down the pecking order. Can he pick himself up and dust himself off in time for the squad announcement for the T20 World Cup in May?Titans looked half the side in the games that David Miller missed out this season due to injury. A lot of their success has been down to the South African’s consistency, which he was able to provide without sacrificing on his strike rate. Now that he’s fit again, the team will be looking to him to take control of their middle order.Pitch and conditions – Pace vs spinThe average first-innings score in Mullanpur this IPL is 187. The conditions, as much as they have lent themselves to the batters, have also allowed fast bowlers to prosper. They have picked up 47 wickets – roughly five times as many as the spinners (9) have managed in four games so far.Stats that matter – The Ashutosh and Shashank show Rashid Khan has dismissed Liam Livingstone three times in four innings in the IPL, while giving away 26 runs in 19 balls. But expand that to all T20s and Livingstone holds his own with a strike rate of 172. Among batters who have faced at least 50 balls of Rashid, no one hits him longer or harder. Ashutosh and Shashank have contributed 343 runs at a strike rate of 190 and average of 57. The rest of Punjab have contributed 820 runs at a strike rate of 127 and an average of 20. Titans have slowed down in every phase of play this season when compared to the last one – powerplay (7.42 vs 8.54), middle overs (7.47 vs 8.54) and death (10.21 vs 11.86). An IPL team’s premier strike bowler typically tends to operate in the death and that’s how Kagiso Rabada had been used previously. He did nearly 30% of his work during overs 17 to 20. This season, however, it’s gone down to 10%, potentially because Punjab rely on Arshdeep Singh in that stage of the innings. Rabada has benefited from this switch. He’s still contributing wickets. He’s got 10 this year which puts him joint-fifth, and his economy rate is 8.32 – only in 2019 and 2021 has he been more miserly. Quotes”We would like him back as soon as we can. He is an experienced head at the top of the order, so we’re hoping that he is available for selection soon. He has started to progress well. We have seen some good signs over the last couple of days. We will decide on Sunday morning.”
