Jos Buttler's Lancashire homecoming not going to plan as Durham prevail

Michael Jones, Ollie Robinson lead workmanlike victory at Chester-le-Street

Anticipation abounds throughout Lancashire that Jos Buttler finally has the opportunity to make a meaningful contribution to their Vitality Blast campaign. His presence is something to applaud, but so far it is not going according to plan. A second failure in successive nights accentuated Lancashire’s gloom as they fell to a third successive defeat, Durham completing a workmanlike six-wicket victory with 10 balls to spare. Many imagined that Buttler looked jaded as he completed his Rajasthan Royals’ IPL campaign with three successive ducks, so as much as he officially pronounces that he is “fresh and raring to go” for the Blast, Lancashire will be wary of expecting miracles from his prolonged availability this summer following a dearth in which he has managed only seven appearances in five seasons. It is easy to mentally lose touch with a county as your life moves on: that perhaps represents his greatest challenge.Buttler’s second-ball dismissal against Yorkshire was followed by 11 in 10 balls against Durham at Chester-le-Street before a short ball from Bas de Leede rose more than he expected and he mistimed a pull to mid-on.Convert his run of scores 0-0-0-1-11 into a Hex colour code and it comes up as overwhelmingly black, so those of a mystical nature will imagine a subliminal message at work here that when it comes to the Blast, Buttler faces some dark times. There again, to a non-mathematician at least, the sequence looks vaguely like a binary progression in which the next number might be 111 or something. Struggling to connect or destined to succeed? Nottinghamshire, on Sunday afternoon, is next up, both counties are now desperate for a win, and we may find out more. From the broiling crowds of the IPL to a relatively sedate Friday evening in a Durham market town is not an easy adjustment, especially as half of the 5,000 crowd were still queueing to get into the ground for the 6.30 start. When he played his one shot of note – a square cut against Wayne Parnell – cars were still driving behind the bowler’s arm. Many missed his dismissal. WFH Fridays can’t be a thing in the north-east or else everybody would have been skiving off from lunchtime.Blast aficionados will hope that Buttler discovers simple pleasures in the competition – it is the longest-established T20 tournament that should remind him of his roots after all – but Eoin Morgan became increasingly apathetic before he called time on his Middlesex career and, at 32, perhaps even the player himself is uncertain how things will fall 10 years after he left Somerset for Lancashire for more regular wicketkeeping opportunities. As he lives in London, even his home appearances for Lancashire represent life in a suitcase. And there comes a time when everybody has had enough of that – even if you are guaranteed on-trend hotel offerings of customised experiences, digital conveniences and nose-to-tail menu options.Chester-le-Street is not the easiest place to make your mark, a ground where the pitches often demand considerable labour for batting rewards. Lancashire posted 152 for 9, their first six batters reaching double figures but nobody surpassing Steven Croft’s 34 from 30 balls, an innings ended when Nathan Sowter spotted him advancing down the pitch and dropped one shorter to bowl him through the gate.Sowter, who added Tom Hartley at long on, a crucial moment as Lancashire limped to 18 from their last four overs. The sub fielder, Jonathan Bushnell, took an exceptional diving catch on the rope at backward square to remove Luke Wood off Wayne Parnell, who followed up by yorking Tom Bailey.Sowter has the second-best economy rate in the tournament to date behind Somerset’s Roelof van der Merwe and he is already showing that he can prosper on this sluggish Riverside square. Durham’s acquisitions of Sowter and Ollie Robinson, as spritely as ever in making 39 from 30 balls, could not have been much shrewder.Lancashire’s other England white-ball batters also had starts that they could not see through as Durham’s Netherlands contingent made more of an impact than Ireland’s attack managed at Lord’s.Phil Salt made a clean-hitting start then whipped Brandon Glover dozily to deep square. Liam Livingstone was more painstaking, in captaincy mode, changed gear by twice muscling de Leede for sixes towards the Health Club but the third fell short at long-on, much to the disappointment of any over-excitable personal trainers looking on from the gymnasium windows.Durham did what Durham do on Chester-le-Street nights like this, grinding down the target with little fanfare. Crucially, Lancashire’s spinners could not make the impact that Sowter had earlier. Hartley and Matt Parkinson conceded 67 in eight overs. Michael Jones’ met them with comfort in top-scoring with 43 from 33 balls. Successive straight sixes against Parkinson left Durham 38 short with seven overs and eight wickets left and settled the game. Their only breakthrough coming when Graham Clark pulled over a quicker, flatter one from Hartley.Once again, North Group confounds predictions. Defeats for Lancashire, Notts and Birmingham have left it closer than logic suggested it would be with Worcestershire making the most convincing audition so far as the surprise contenders for a last-eight place.

Confident UP Warriorz, well-rounded Delhi Capitals meet in playoff rehearsal

Big Picture

UP Warriorz have Sophie Ecclestone to thank for bailing them out of troubled waters for two games in a row now. Wins that seemed tough – first in a low-scorer against Mumbai Indians, and then in a tall chase against Gujarat Giants – have catapulted them into the top three.Even if third-placed Warriorz lose against Delhi Capitals on Wednesday, they are certain to play the Eliminator, thus giving them a shot at the final; but if they beat Capitals, it will force a three-way race for the top spot if Mumbai happen to lose their final match against Royal Challengers Bangalore. However, Warriorz are so far behind both Mumbai and Capitals on net run rate that it is near impossible to catch up in just one game. That said, they would have probably settled for third if you had asked them last week, which saw them suffer their third loss in four games despite starting the season with a win.Over to their opponents. Capitals have come storming back to steal the top spot that seemed destined to be Mumbai’s when they had raced to five straight wins. But two losses in a row for Mumbai have opened the door ajar. In sending Mumbai on a tailspin by chasing down 110 in just nine overs last night, Capitals are in a position where a win in their final group game could vault them straight into the final provided Mumbai either lose their final match, or win it but don’t cross Capitals on net run rate. But Capitals could finish atop with a loss too, though they wouldn’t want to enter the playoffs devoid of momentum. Capitals further stand to gain if Royal Challengers bring their A game to beat Mumbai.Warriorz would dearly love for their Indian batters to turn up and strike form. Devika Vaidya, Kiran Navgire and Deepti Sharma have all struggled lately, but their lack of runs have been compensated by contributions from Grace Harris and Tahlia McGrath.Capitals, though, have no such worries. Meg Lanning is the highest run-getter of the tournament so far, while Shafali Verma’s destructive game that seemed to have deserted her during the T20 World Cup has given them the turbocharge up top; her strike rate of 189 is clearly the best for any batter with at least 200 runs in the tournament. To add to that, Marizanne Kapp has been scoring runs and picking wickets for fun, Alice Capsey has lent batting muscle in the powerplay, and Jemimah Rodrigues has provided a calming influence in the middle order. Then there has been the ever-reliable Jess Jonassen who has been around to play a role similar to what Michael Bevan did for Australia all those years ago – bail the team out of trouble time and again. This is a well-rounded batting unit high on confidence.Arundhati Reddy’s bowling was applauded after the win against Mumbai Indians•BCCI

Players to Watch

With scores of 12, 8 and 1 in her last three innings, Warriorz captain Alyssa Healy has hit a rough patch. But she has the reputation of being a big-match player. As the Eliminator nears, there couldn’t have been a better chance than this to roar back into form and carry the confidence of doing so against a gun bowling attack.Don’t let the raw numbers fool you. She may have just two wickets in five games, but Arundhati Reddy had a rhythm to her bowling that Lanning applauded unprompted after the win against Mumbai. Reddy also appears to have cranked up her pace, and seemed menacing with her nip-backers during her spell of 1 for 10 in three overs in that match.

Possible XIs

Delhi Capitals: 1 Meg Lanning (capt), 2 Shafali Verma, 3 Alice Capsey, 4 Jemimah Rodrigues, 5 Marizanne Kapp, 6 Jess Jonassen, 7 Taniya Bhatia (wk), 8 Shikha Pandey, 9 Arundhati Reddy, 10 Radha Yadav, 11 Tara NorrisUP Warriorz: 1 Alyssa Healy (capt, wk), 2 Devika Vaidya, 3 Tahlia McGrath, 4 Kiran Navgire, 5 Grace Harris, 6 Deepti Sharma, 7 Sophie Ecclestone, 8 Simran Shaikh, 9 Anjali Sarvani, 10 Parshavi Chopra, 11 Rajeshwari Gayakwad

Stats and Trivia

  • Among teams that have finished in the top three, Capitals’ pace bowler Shikha Pandey’s ten wickets is the most among seamers in the competition.
  • Harris’ strike rate of 170.07 is third best in the competition among batters who have made at least 200 runs, with Sophie Devine second with a strike rate of 175.
  • Ecclestone’s economy of 6.21 is the best among those who have picked up at least ten wickets this season

Manchester City are planning to lure Paris Saint-Germain wonderkid Sangare this summer on a free transfer with the player running down his contract, according to RMC Sport journalist Fabrice Hawkins. The plan is to sign the young Frenchman and immediately loan him out to French second-division outfit Troyes, who are one of City's sister clubs within the City Football Group.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

While no deal has been finalised, City Football Group may be inspired by Chelsea’s successful strategy of developing young talent at RC Strasbourg, where the team is now competing for a Champions League spot. The Cityzens could look to replicate this approach with Troyes, currently struggling in Ligue 2 and working to avoid relegation to France’s third division. Sangare has attracted interest from several Bundesliga clubs, too, with a departure this summer inevitable.

  • DID YOU KNOW?

Sangare is currently featuring prominently for PSG's U19 side. He has scored eight goals in six games in this season's UEFA Youth League and was rewarded with his maiden cap for the France U18s in November 2024.

    WHAT NEXT FOR MANCHESTER CITY?

Pep Guardiola's side will be keen to build on their 2-0 win over Leicester City on Wednesday when they take on rivals Manchester United on Sunday, April 6. City are currently in fourth place in the Premier League table with 51 points from 30 games.

Olympic movement exposes old faultlines

Does the ECB’s new-found enthusiasm for cricket in the Olympics stem from a genuine interest in the global game, or is it merely a means to improve its public image?

Tim Wigmore06-Nov-2015Switzerland is an unlikely setting for a critical moment in modern cricket history. Yet when the ICC, including Giles Clarke, meet the International Olympic Committee at Lausanne this month it will reveal much about who has the power, and how they intend to use it, in English and global cricket today.Under new chairman Colin Graves, the ECB has been keen to distance itself from the old regime – and above all Clarke. “I don’t want to look back at the Giles Clarke regime,” Graves told ESPNcricinfo last month.Graves’ endorsement of cricket joining the Olympics seems emblematic of the ECB’s determination to forge a new image. Many in the ECB are aware that it has become regarded as a pernicious influence on the world game following the board’s role in the International Cricket Council’s restructuring last year, its determination that the World Cup should be contracted to ten teams and its staunch opposition to Olympic participation on the grounds that it would reduce the ECB’s revenue. An ECB board meeting last Thursday endorsed Graves’ support for the ICC’s newfound interest in cricket becoming an Olympic sport. It also emphasised that Clarke should represent this position at the ICC – despite his unequivocal declaration, in the recent documentary Death of a Gentleman, that joining the Games was “impossible” and “a complete non-starter”.Clarke is not the sort to meekly accept orders from the board. The ECB president, who remains the board’s representative in the ICC, has given no indication of privately altering his stance on the Olympics. In The Guardian last week Mike Selvey, who is known to have a good working relationship with Clarke, reported that “The ICC, for its part, would see an Olympic tournament as diluting the value of its own global competitions” and that a T20 tournament would not fit within the schedule, leaving only sixes or double-wicket cricket as options. The implication was unmistakable: Clarke has yet to revise his previous opinion.Next June, Clarke is likely to become the new ICC chairman. The new BCCI president Shashank Manohar is grappling with internal politics and so, following the death of Jagmohan Dalmiya and in the aftermath of the IPL match-fixing scandal, Clarke could have a relatively free hand in the ICC executive committee.Yet while Clarke would nominally be the most influential man in world cricket, his position would appear to be contingent upon maintaining the support of the ECB board. If a full member removes their nominee to the ICC board, they cease to sit on the board and are no longer eligible to hold the position of ICC chairman, as Srinivasan might soon find out.In theory this gives the ECB board power over Clarke’s behaviour if he becomes ICC president. Clarke “will have to fall in line with the ECB stance,” says one source who has worked with him and Graves. “If Giles steps out of line he will be bombed.”And so the focus turns to Lausanne later this month, where the ICC and the IOC will meet to discuss cricket’s possible inclusion in the 2024 Games. Alongside David Richardson, Clarke has been chosen to represent the ICC, a curious decision in light of his previous public opposition to cricket joining the Games. The fact that the IOC recognise the ICC and have arranged a meeting suggests a desire to include the world’s second most popular sport (and its lucrative Indian market). However, there are issues to be overcome, with India’s non-compliance with the World Anti-Doping Agency particularly problematic. Any official bid to make cricket an Olympic sport would therefore require the full support and commitment of key ICC figures, given the diplomacy required to encourage the BCCI to modify their stance to appease the IOC. Clarke’s position remains crucial. This appears to be a moment of transformative potential for cricket. Olympic status could give the women’s game unprecedented exposure and funding, and would do the same for men’s cricket beyond the Test world. It would be expansionism with someone else footing the bill: in China, local and national government would spend $15-20 million a year on cricket if it became an Olympic sport, while government funding in most countries prioritises Olympic sports.Certainly the Olympic issue appears worthy of more debate than the current ICC stance as presented by Selvey. Indeed, rather than costing ICC events money, one expert believes it would do the exact opposite.”I don’t think that fewer people will suddenly watch the World T20 if there’s a T20 Olympics competition,” says Andrew Wildblood, the former executive vice-president of IMG, the global sports marketing firm. “In fact I’ll think it will have a positive impact because you will be distributing the game to a wider audience.”Meanwhile Graves has already said that he does not envisage difficulty fitting an Olympic event into cricket’s schedule. As far as the Olympic schedule goes, a 16-team T20 event, with four groups of four and then quarter-finals, could be completed in as few as eight days by playing up to three games a day on two different grounds. The Lausanne encounter will be instructive. Should it prove unproductive, and if Clarke is perceived as being an obstacle, it will raise questions as to how much influence Graves really holds over Clarke, with the implication that Clarke will retain considerable autonomy at the ICC while Graves focuses on English domestic cricket.Though the ECB has worked hard to restore its public image since the installation of Graves and Tom Harrison as chairman and CEO respectively, the damage that was caused by its annus horriblis in 2014-15 means that being seen to do the right thing is a vital part of the board’s new strategy. Publicly endorsing the Olympics is an obvious means of boosting the ECB’s public standing. However, fundamental questions about the ECB remain, whatever happens in Lausanne. While Clarke has remained the ECB’s representative in Dubai, Graves has yet to discuss the lack of independent governance at the ICC or the reforms to the ICC last year, even though he was deputy chairman of the ECB when they took place; nor has he shown interest in reversing the contraction of the World Cup. As part of their itineraries for next year’s Test tours of England, two full members, Sri Lanka and Pakistan, have agreed to multi-match ODI series against Ireland; England, on the other hand, still only play Ireland in a solitary ODI every two years.England also declined to make their 50-over match with Hong Kong on Sunday an official ODI. Remarkably, it is understood that the ECB claimed not to have the funds available to pay their players full match fees. The suggestion that the ECB have a renewed interest in the wellbeing of the international game is welcome indeed. Yet the perception of the board’s new enlightened stewardship remains, as yet, some way short of being a reality.

Winning without losing wickets, and six ducks in an innings

Also: double-centuries in low totals, and a foreign-born England XI

Steven Lynch01-Nov-2016In the respective first innings of the Dhaka Test, Bangladesh reached 150 for 1, while England were 150 for 8 – but went on to get the lead. Was this some sort of record? asked Mahinda Gunasekera from Sri Lanka
That remarkable turnaround in the second Test in Mirpur was certainly a noteworthy occurrence: Bangladesh actually reached 171 for 1, while England at one point were 144 for 8. The only other Test in which a team claimed a first-innings lead after losing their eighth wicket at a lower score than the opposition’s second was in Bombay in 1960-61, when Pakistan slipped from 301 for 1 to 350 all out, and were overtaken by India, who had been 300 for 8 but went on to declare at 449 for 9.Has any side ever won a Test – or a first-class match – without losing a wicket? asked Ed Atkinson from England
There hasn’t yet been a Test match in which the winning side lost no wickets at all. The fewest is two, which has happened five times – most recently by South Africa (637 for 2 dec) against England (385 and 240) at The Oval in 2012. The previous instance was also by South Africa, against Bangladesh in Chittagong in 2002-03. The other three were all by England: against South Africa at Lord’s in 1924, New Zealand at Headingley in 1958, and India at Edgbaston in 1974. There have been eight instances of a side winning a first-class match without losing a wicket. The first – and the only one in England – was by Lancashire (166 for 0 dec and 66 for 0) against Leicestershire (108 and 122) at Old Trafford in 1956. Four of the others were in Pakistan, most recently when Karachi Blues conceded the match – saying the pitch was too dangerous – after slipping to 33 for 4 in Faisalabad in 2004-05.Josh Cobb is the only player to win match awards twice in the final of England’s T20 competition•Getty ImagesI saw a match last season in which Alviro Petersen of the Lions scored 203 in a total of less than 300. Was this the lowest total to include a double-century? asked Tiaan Strydom from South Africa
Alviro Petersen’s fine effort – 203 out of 295 – was against the Titans in Potchefstroom in January 2016. It is actually second on the list for completed innings, behind only a remarkable effort by Namibia’s Gerrie Snyman in an Intercontinental Cup match against Kenya in Sharjah in January 2008. Snyman battered 230, with 11 sixes, in a total of 282; the only other double-figure score was Michael Durant’s 13. There is one lower innings, in which not all the wickets fell – Oxford University made 280 for 1, with Micky Walford hitting 201 not out, to beat MCC at Lord’s in 1938. Gloucestershire scored 292 for 6 (Charles Barnett 204 not out) against Leicestershire at Aylestone Road in 1936, and in 1957, Worcestershire made 292 for 6 declared (Don Kenyon 200 not out) against Nottinghamshire at New Road.Who’s the only player to be Man of the Match twice in the final of the English domestic Twenty20 Cup competition? asked Matt Clarke from England
The Twenty20 Cup started in England in 2003, and in its various guises until 2015 the Man-of-the-Match awards in the 13 finals were shared around 13 different players. But in this year’s T20 Blast final, at Edgbaston, Northamptonshire’s Josh Cobb won the prize for his match-winning 80. Back in 2011, when he was playing for Leicestershire, Cobb had received the award for his 4 for 22 – all of them catches by the substitute Matt Boyce – which restricted Somerset’s score in the final, again at Edgbaston. In an ODI in Colombo in 2012, six Pakistan batsmen were dismissed for ducks•Getty ImagesWhat’s the record for the most people in an England Test team who weren’t born in England? asked Darren Hurst from England
There have been four England teams that contained seven players born outside England, all of them in the early 1990s. The team for the first two Tests at home against West Indies in 1991 included Phillip DeFreitas (born in Dominica), Graeme Hick (Zimbabwe), Allan Lamb (South Africa), Devon Malcolm (Jamaica), Derek Pringle (Kenya), Robin Smith (South Africa) and Steve Watkin (Wales). It might be stretching a point to include the Welshman Watkin, but the following winter in New Zealand the England side for the first two Tests included DeFreitas, Hick, Lamb, Pringle and Smith, plus Chris Lewis (born in Guyana) and Dermot Reeve (Hong Kong). The most recent England side made up entirely of people born inside the country was against Sri Lanka in Galle in 2003-04.There were five ducks in New Zealand’s innings in the fifth ODI at Vizag. Was this a record? asked Prashaan Raga from South Africa
New Zealand’s five ducks in their paltry total of 79 against India in Visakhapatnam last week equalled the New Zealand record, set against Pakistan in Auckland in 2000-01 (in a total of 149). But there have been five one-day international innings that contained six ducks, three of them by Pakistan: against England at Edgbaston in 1987 (in a total of 213 for 9), v West Indies in Cape Town in 1992-93 (43 all out), and against Sri Lanka in Colombo in 2012 (199). There were also six ducks in South Africa’s 106 against Australia in Sydney in 2001-02, and Zimbabwe’s 127 v Sri Lanka in Harare in 2008-09.Post your questions in the comments below

Tottenham now in pole position to sign "super" £30m Premier League forward

Tottenham Hotspur are now seen as the main contenders to sign one Premier League forward, with a January transfer update now coming from a very reliable media source this week.

Tottenham in market to sign new attacker before January deadline day

Having fell short in their pursuit of PSG outcast Randal Kolo Muani, who ended up putting pen to paper on a straight loan to Juventus instead, Spurs boss Ange Postecoglou is still searching for a new forward.

Tottenham and Levy could now hijack Man Utd talks to sign £30m defender

Chairman Daniel Levy has been tipped to swoop in.

1 ByEmilio Galantini Jan 21, 2025

Tottenham were in contact with PSG over signing Kolo Muani early last week (Fabrizio Romano), and were attempting to sway him with a move to north London until the very last minute. However, Juve proved a very tempting option for the Frenchman, with Spurs now returning to the drawing board.

The Premier League strugglers, who are yet to win a single top flight game this calendar year, languish 15th in the table and have suffered defeat on 12 separate occasions in the league alone already – so the under-fire Postecoglou quite simply needs inspiration from somewhere.

Tottenham are coping with vast injuries to first-team players right now, hamstringing Postecoglou’s squad, and it is safe to say that one signing in £12.5 million goalkeeper Antonin Kinsky won’t be good enough come deadline day on February 3rd.

The Lilywhites are reportedly working hard on getting the required, quality fresh faces through the door before time runs out. Spurs remain in the market for a new attacker who can provide an injection of direct threat, with Postecoglou recently offered Lyon star Rayan Cherki (GiveMeSport).

Tottenham are also believed to be eyeing a move for Nice’s Evan Guessand, while other reported targets are emerging as we approach the business end of January.

Tottenham now the "biggest competitor" for Southampton starlet Tyler Dibling

One player who fits the mould of a potential Spurs signing – young, homegrown and good value – is Southampton forward Tyler Dibling.

The versatile 18-year-old has been a mainstay at St. Mary’s Stadium this term, scoring four goals and assisting two others in a wide variety of attacking roles. He could suit Postecoglou down to the ground, and Sky Germany’s Florian Plettenberg reports that they’re serious contenders for Dibling’s signature.

Indeed, Tottenham are the “biggest competitors” to sign Dibling, who Plettenberg dubs a “super talent”, but face stiff competition from RB Leipzig who are pushing for his services.

He is valued at around £30 million by the Saints, according to other reports, so Spurs would still have to make a significant mid-season investment despite being current favourites.

Cummins returns home due to family health issue

The captain is due to return to lead the side in the third Test in Indore

Alex Malcolm20-Feb-2023Australia captain Pat Cummins has flown home from the tour of India due to a serious family health issue following his side’s six-wicket loss in the second Test in Delhi.Cummins will return to Sydney for a few days but is due to be back in India for the preparations ahead of the third Test in Indore. Australia are 2-0 down in the series with two Tests to play but now have a nine-day break between Tests with the third match beginning on March 1.Coach Andrew McDonald confirmed Cummins would remain in contact with the group while he is in Sydney and would remain involved in the planning for Indore.”We’ll be in contact with Patty,” McDonald said. “We’ve got some decisions to make around squads and injuries. He’ll still be engaged in those conversations whilst dealing with what’s happening back home but we’ve got some strong leaders in the squad who will be able to pick up the slack on the ground.”Cummins played as the sole quick in Australia’s XI in Delhi but did not bowl in the fourth innings of the match as India mowed down Australia’s target of 115 with ease to wrap up the Test inside three days.Although Cummins is not expected to miss a Test, vice-captain Steven Smith would lead the side if required. Smith has captained in Cummins’ absence on two occasions since the fast bowler took over the Test captaincy in late 2021.Cummins missed the second Test of the 2021-22 Ashes series in Adelaide after he was forced to withdraw due to being a close Covid contact.
