Root produces his best yet

He was the first batsman to pass fifty in the match and looked a class above anyone else on a lively pitch that is making for terrific Test cricket

George Dobell at the Wanderers15-Jan-2016Whatever happens in the remainder of this Test – and it is beautifully poised – it surely bodes well for England that, for the second game in succession, one of their young batsmen has produced an innings that might reasonably be defined as great.Whatever holes there may have been in Joe Root’s CV – and for a 25-year-old there are very few – one of them was his ability to flourish against good quality attacks on wickets offering a higher than average degree of bounce. After all, he struggled against an outstanding attack in the Ashes series of 2013-14 and was not entirely convincing as an opening batsman in 2013.But then he was 22. And here, against four fast men who all bowled in excess of 90mph, with the match in the balance and his team in some trouble, he produced a century of the highest class to go a long way to not only answering any reasonable questions about his ability, but to keep his side in the game.No doubt, had Dale Steyn and perhaps Vernon Philander been available, Root would have been more thoroughly tested. But South Africa actually bowled admirably – at least until they were rattled by Root and Ben Stokes’ aggression – and, on a pitch on which nobody else had reached 50 at the time he came to the crease, Root has looked a class above anyone else in the game. And there really are some very fine players involved in this match.Root’s record at No. 4 and No. 5 – a record now set across a not inconsiderable sample size – is deeply impressive. While there are the usual caveats – pitches these days are generally more batsmen friendly and this was only the second of his Test centuries made overseas – he currently averages 68.24 in 43 innings, more than Sachin or Sobers in those positions. There are still bridges to cross – not least, the challenges of Asia and Australia – but it does seem there is something special unfolding in front of us with the blossoming of Root.It is Root’s ability to score from almost any delivery that renders him such a tough proposition for opponents. Bowl back of a length and he will either force you off the back foot from anywhere between mid-off and backward point, or guide you down to third man. Bowl short and he will pull, cut or hook with relish. And so strong and deft are those wrists that every stroke has a vast degree of scope depending on the placement of the fielders. But bowling full to him allows the opportunity to drive on either side of the wicket and while he may always favour the back foot, the stroke that brought up his century – a gorgeous cover drive off Chris Morris that would have made David Gower proud – was played with his right knee touching the ground, his left leg well forward and his nose over the ball.Class above: Joe Root’s ninth Test hundred brought England firmly back into the match•Getty ImagesHe will always be strong off his pads and punish width, too. But perhaps the key to converting this innings into a century – before this game, he had converted only one of his nine most recent Test half-centuries – was his determination to play straighter and leave the ball when appropriate. So while Kagiso Rabada was driven through mid-on and Morris almost straight past the stumps, Root was happy to leave on length and less likely than previously to play across his front pad. As ever in great innings, the shots not played are as important as those that are.It all leaves bowlers with very little margin for error. We saw the effects of that here. An attack who had harnessed the conditions expertly in the first 30 overs of the innings – far better than England’s vastly more experienced seamers – suddenly found themselves unsure where to bowl. As a result, they lost their discipline and were punished. The 100 partnership occupied only 86 balls. There have been few quicker century partnerships in Test history.Root gained enormously from the presence of Stokes at the other end. Stokes, aged just 24, already has the rare ability to intimidate bowlers and, after his brutal innings in Cape Town, reacted to the challenge here the only way he knows how: by counterattacking with ferocious power. There were those – a joyless, sorry bunch who must begrudge sunsets and rainbows their beauty – who dismissed his double-century at Newlands as the plundering of a flat-track bully. But to see him peppered and pummelled by the wonderfully hostile Morne Morkel was to see him tested and tried. The response – impossibly fierce pulls and an ability to hit back of a length deliveries over mid-off – reiterated the impression that England have a gem in Stokes.Indeed, as the partnership became increasingly reminiscent of the stand made between the same paid at Lord’s in May – coming together at 30 for 4, they added 161 in little over 30 overs against New Zealand – the thought occurred: have England had a pair of such exciting young talents – entertainers as well as fine players – since the emergence of Gower and Ian Botham in the late 1970s?In the grand scheme of things, AB de Villiers’ outstanding fielding – such is his pace and athleticism that he came within a whisker of concocting a run-out from a situation where almost everyone else in the world would have accepted a safe single – scarcely warrants a mention. Suffice it to say, he is one of very few cricketers who can stand at mid-off for much of the day and justify the admission price. For this was as compelling a day of cricket as anyone could wish to see. Hostile fast bowling; audacious batting; breathtaking fielding: we had it all. This series – played by two fine, well-matched teams who manage to play hard but appreciate the skills of their opponents – is quietly developing into something of a classic. And days like this belong not to the supporters of one side or the other, but all those who love and value Test cricket. There is another lesson here. If the ICC can find the funding to invest in research into pitch preparation – and it may be that technology has a large part to play – it will surely prove money well spent. If more Test surfaces bore the characteristics of this one, notably pace and bounce, it is likely that we would see far more entertaining games. No-one should begrudge Bethuel Buthelezi, in his first Test as head groundsman, if he wins the Man-of-the-Match award.Nobody is asking for homogenisation of conditions. Variety will always have value. But, over the last few years, we have seen some wretched, lifeless surfaces (Nagpur in 2012, Trent Bridge in 2014 and, sad to say, Lord’s on more than one occasion spring to mind) and nothing is more likely to douse the enthusiasm of a new audience for our great game. Forget the nonsense about appealing to ‘the purists’; Test cricket is embroiled in a fight for survival. It needs to reach out and entertain beyond the confines of the ‘the purists.’ Pitches like this will give it a far better chance of winning that fight.

Lopetegui must drop 5/10 West Ham star who lost the ball 11 times

Julen Lopetegui’s West Ham drew 1-1 with Bournemouth, with late drama between the sides leading to a thrilling end on Monday evening.

The Spanish coach clearly tweaked his game plan against the Cherries in order to avoid their pressing traps, playing slightly more direct, looking to miss out the midfield pivot and win second balls closer to the box.

A late penalty call for a controversial handball saw the Hammers take a 1-0 lead in the 87th minute through Lucas Paqueta. But just three minutes later, Enes Unal smashed the equaliser home with a wonderful freekick.

West Ham remain 14th in the Premier League despite picking up four points in their last two games, and whilst results have picked up in their last few fixtures, the performances have still left a lot to be desired.

West Ham's best performers vs Bournemouth

Having said that, against Bournemouth, there were a few good performances, one of which was the performance of goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski, making eight saves, six of them coming from inside the box.

Another top performer was the goalscorer, Paqueta, who not only slotted away the penalty, but also made three key passes, took three shots (one on target), and had 51 touches.

Defender Max Kilman was another performance worth mentioning, making five blocks, three tackles, winning three of his five ground duels, winning five of his seven aerial duels, and making six of his 13 long balls attempted.

But alongside these good performances, there was a poor one that needs to be addressed, as Lopetegui now has a decision to make on whether to drop this man or not.

Chalkboard

Football FanCast's Chalkboard series presents a tactical discussion from around the global game.

Edson Alvarez's performance v Bournemouth

Edson Alvarez has made 14 appearances this season, receiving four yellow cards and two red cards in 843 minutes played. The Mexican midfielder was given a 5/10 match rating for his performance by The Standard, with a few poor mistakes bringing his score down on Monday evening.

The 27-year-old played 75 minutes against the Cherries, losing possession 11 times, failing both of his long ball attempts and completing just 76% of his passes (32/42).

Alvarez was tasked with dropping between the two central defenders on the ball for West Ham, as they looked to bypass the middle of the pitch, playing long balls into the front line, and winning second balls. However, the Mexico international put his side under pressure at times, losing the ball 11 times, and missing both of those long ball attempts.

In terms of winning his duels, he did win four out of six both ground and aerial, but when he was the main source of protection in front of the defensive line, the fact he only competed in six duels in his 75 minutes, is a different problem of its own, which can again begin to highlight some slight mobility issues in the West Ham midfield.

Since joining the club last summer, with the aim of replacing Declan Rice, the 27-year-old defensive midfielder has struggled to provide consistency in the middle of the park for the Hammers, and now Lopetegui has a big decision on his hands regarding his place in the team, especially as his job is far from secure.

Afghanistan agree 'in principle' to support women's cricket

The ICC’s Afghanistan Working Group (AWG) has conveyed to the governing body’s board that the country’s government has reiterated its commitment to “fully respect and comply” with the ICC constitution, including agreeing “in principle” to support the development of women’s cricket. The focus was to ensure “diversity and inclusivity, and for the Afghanistan Cricket Board to operate independent from government interference,” an ICC statement following meetings in Melbourne over the weekend said.Related

“The meeting was positive and respectful, and the [Afghanistan] government representative was clear in his support for the ICC constitution including in principle for women’s cricket in Afghanistan,” Imran Khwaja, the AWG chair, was quoted as saying. “There are obviously challenges for it to resume but we will continue to work with the ACB to take this forward. The Working Group will closely monitor the commitment undertaken by the Afghanistan government and will continue to report back to the ICC Board.”As things stand, Afghanistan is the only Full Member to have received that status without having an operational women’s team in place. Last year, the ACB had announced its first contracts for women in their quest to build a team, but those efforts were put on the back-burner following the Taliban’s takeover of the administrative affairs of the country in September 2021.At the time, ACB chief executive Hamid Shinwari admitted that the women’s game was “in peril”, even as then acting chairman Azizullah Fazli said women would be allowed to play as long as the players adhered to Islamic rules. Soon after, Afghanistan’s Test in Australia – their first in the country – was called off. Australian sports minister Richard Colbeck said at the time that Afghan athletes would “remain welcome in Australia, but not under the flag of the Taliban”.The men’s ODI World Cup will be a 14-team affair in 2027•Getty Images

The ICC has also formulated a qualification pathway for the women’s 2024 T20 World Cup – the ten-team event will have eight automatic qualifiers – the top-three teams from each of the two groups at the 2023 women’s T20 World Cup in South Africa, hosts Bangladesh (if they fail to make the cut in 2023), and the next-highest-ranked teams in the ICC rankings when the 2023 edition concludes. NSW captain Kurtis Patterson dropped from Shield team

Eight single figure scores in his last 11 innings the catalyst as NSW face South Australia in the final Sheffield Shield round trying to avoid a winless season

ESPNcricinfo staff11-Mar-2023New South Wales have made the bold decision to drop their captain and two-Test batter Kurtis Patterson from their Sheffield Shield team for the final match of the season against South Australia as the Blues try and avoid a winless season.Since starting the Shield season with scores of 72 not out, 3, 40, 25 and 122 not out, Patterson has scored just 155 runs at an average of 14.09 in his last 11 innings with one half-century. Eight of those scores have been single figures including 1 and 9 in NSW’s last Shield loss to Victoria in Albury.Stand-in coach Greg Shipperd, who took over from Phil Jaques in late November after the former Test opener was sacked following a horror start to the season, made the bold decision to drop Patterson alongside the NSW chairman of selectors and head of male cricket Michael Klinger.”Our batting group have been inconsistent recently in delivering the runs necessary to establish the match positions we were looking for,” Shipperd said.”We recognise it is a difficult decision to pass on your captain but we are confident Kurtis will regather and draw purpose from this call into the future.”It was decided to support consistent and inform batters in this season’s last fixture, with the currency being runs.”Moises Henriques will stand in as captain for the match against South Australia at Karen Rolton Oval. The Blues look set to make five changes. Blake Nikitaris has also been dropped while Trent Copeland has retired. Daniel Hughes has a calf injury and Liam Hatcher is out with a foot issue.Jason Sangha, Ryan Hackney, Ryan Hadley and Ben Dwarshuis have been included in the squad while last week’s 12th man Blake MacDonald is in-line to make his Shield debut.Shipperd emphasised the selection changes were based on performance at the lower levels.”Ryan Hackney has been in the Blues team previously and has averaged over 65 in Second Xl this season,” Shipperd said.”Blake MacDonald was in the squad with us for the last match, although he didn’t play. He has had a phenomenal summer, scoring consecutive Second Xl centuries for ACT / NSW Country as well as 177 not out against the touring West Indies side. This week in the match between NSW Metro and NSW/ACT Country he scored in the 90’s twice.”He was given feedback earlier in the season and asked to score more runs and he has more than done that. Those two guys completely demanded selection.”Similarly, Jason Sangha was left out of our last match and went away and scored plenty of runs in this week’s Second Xl match.”Ryan Hadley is another who has put the form on the board with an extremely dominant Premier Cricket season.”NSW Shield squad vs South Australia: Ollie Davies, Ben Dwarshuis, Jack Edwards, Matthew Gilkes, Chris Green, Ryan Hackney, Ryan Hadley, Moises Henriques (c), Hayden Kerr, Blake MacDonald, Jason Sangha, Chris Tremain

New South Wales stalwart and Australia three-Test seamer Trent Copeland has announced his retirement from first-class cricket.Copeland has been a mainstay of Sheffield Shield cricket over the past 14 years having taken 410 first-class wickets at 25.65 including 21 five-wicket hauls and three 10-wicket hauls.Copeland, who turns 37 on March 14, said it was the right time to step away.”It’s one of those things where it’s probably been coming for a little while,” Copeland said. “Thinking at the start of the season, would it be my last year? I’m about to turn 37. It’s probably time when I handed the reins over to some of the younger boys.”I’m incredibly proud of what I’ve achieved but also what my family and certainly my wife and kids have allowed me to achieve through their support. I’m very lucky.”The 195cm tall swing bowler has tormented Australian domestic batters across his career. His unerring accuracy and ability to swing the ball both ways in friendly and unfriendly conditions made him one of New South Wales’ finest-ever Shield bowlers.Related

NSW captain Kurtis Patterson dropped from Shield team

He burst onto the scene in his debut game as a 23-year-old taking 8 for 92 in his first Shield innings with the ball, the second-best figures by a New South Wales bowler on debut, and claiming ten for the match. He took an extraordinary 80 wickets in his first 15 Shield matches at 21.57. It got him selected on an Australia A tour of Zimbabwe in 2011 and the subsequent three-Test tour of Sri Lanka a month later. He took 5 for 47 in the first tour match and debuted in the first Test in Galle alongside Nathan Lyon. Copeland played in all three Tests in Sri Lanka and took six wickets as Australia won the series 1-0. He also went on the following two-Test tour of South Africa but did not play.Trent Copeland struck in his first over of international cricket•Associated Press

The emergence of fellow New South Wales quicks Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood at Test level meant Copeland never got another opportunity for Australia but their absence from Shield cricket allowed him to dominate the domestic competition. He played in four Shield finals and helped New South Wales claim two titles. He took 52 wickets in the 2018-19 season including match figures of 8-126 in a losing final against Victoria at the Junction Oval. Only 12 bowlers in the competition’s history have ever taken more wickets in a single season. He finishes equal 11th on the all-time Shield wicket-takers list with 344 scalps at 26.30.Copeland also played one season for Northamptonshire in division two of the county championship in 2013 and took 45 wickets at 18.36 in just 10 games including four five-wicket hauls.Copeland only played 29 List A games but did play in New South Wales’ Matador BBQs Cup [Australia’s domestic One-Day Cup competition] triumph in 2016-17 taking 2 for 33 in the final against Queensland. It was his last List A game.He only played three T20s across his career playing one for NSW in the old Big Bash competition in 2011 and then two in the BBL, including one for Sydney Thunder in 2012 and one for Sydney Sixers in 2014.In recent years Copeland has combined his Shield playing duties with NSW with television commentary working for Channel Seven on their Test and BBL coverage as an analyst. It’s something he will continue to do post-playing but he would also like to coach at some point.”I’ll finish playing as of right now but I’m still going to be very much involved with Seven’s cricket commentary team, sitting in the best seat in the house at all the best venues watching the best cricket so I’ll be heavily involved there,” Copeland said. “My ambitions post-cricket are certainly to either be involved in a coaching capacity or administratively as well. So what that looks like I don’t know. But I’m going to sit at home with [wife] Kim and the kids and have a bit of family time.”

Man Utd plotting move to sign £20m playmaker who could replace Mason Mount

Manchester United are among the teams interested in signing a £20 million midfielder next month, according to a new report. The January transfer window opens in just a couple of weeks time, and the Red Devils will hope the sudden departure of Dan Ashworth will not affect their plans.

"Strong" Man Utd target keen on Premier League move; contact already made

He’s having an excellent season.

ByTom Cunningham Dec 9, 2024 Man Utd transfer news

January could be a pivotal month for United, as INEOS may look to do some transfer business in the hope that it helps Ruben Amorim turn the club’s fortunes around. Ahead of what is normally a quiet transfer window for the Premier League side, they have already been linked with a few potential arrivals.

A new report has stated that United are looking to submit an offer to sign Marc Guehi from Crystal Palace in 2025. The centre-back’s contract at Selhurst Park expires in 2026, and United could look to use this to their advantage, as they plan to make a £33 million offer, which is below his £50 million price tag.

Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi celebrates

Another player the Red Devils are interested in signing from the Premier League is Heung-min Son. The Tottenham Hotspur attacker is someone United know very well and are reportedly interested in making a move for him in 2025, as his future continues to look uncertain with the London side.

But these are not the only players who are on United’s radar, as they also have a midfielder under consideration, and he could be a long-term replacement for an individual already at Old Trafford.

Man Utd plotting move to sign £20m starlet

According to Caught Offside, Manchester United are interested in a deal to sign Martin Baturina from Dinamo Zagreb. The 21-year-old is highly rated in the game, especially in his homeland of Croatia, with the report labelling him an “elite prospect”.

Baturina has become an important figure for his club and country in recent times, and his performances are now catching the attention of European heavyweights. This report states that Paris Saint-Germain are working on a deal for Baturina and have been for a while. They are keen to get a deal done for around 25 million euros, which is roughly £20 million, as soon as possible. However, United are also keen on the Croatian international, along with many other Premier League teams.

Teams such as Manchester City, Liverpool, Real Madrid, Atlético Madrid, and Barcelona are also interested, but while United are longer term admirers, Zagreb are adamant that he isn’t for sale.

Baturina’s arrival at Old Trafford could spell the end for Mason Mount, as the Englishman has struggled since joining the Red Devils and could be one that is let go by Amorim if his performances don’t improve.

Suryakumar Yadav's breakout domestic season continues

After helping propel Mumbai to a Ranji Trophy title in February, the 25-year-old has continued making strides with Kolkata Knight Riders

‘More than happy to bat at No. 3’ – Suryakumar

He had faced just 10 deliveries before this match. On both those occasions he had come in to bat to wrap up the formalities. Today was different.Suryakumar Yadav walked in to bat off the second ball of the Kolkata Knight Riders innings. He then watched his captain Gautam Gambhir run himself out in suicidal fashion in the third over. Yadav today did not just have many overs to bat, but also had to bat his team out of trouble. On the Indian domestic circuit, Suryakumar is not the most liked of cricketers. Even though the Mumbai batsman has worked hard to walk away from the brash youngster attitude he had cultivated a few years ago, many still don’t believe him. But Suryakumar has not bothered too much about opinion. He has grown in his role both at Mumbai and the Knight Riders with the franchise appointing him deputy to Gambhir.Suryakumar came to the crease chewing gum. He swiftly released the pressure that mounted in the immediate wake of the fall of the Uthappa and Gambhir – the best batsmen so far in the tournament for the Knight Riders. In the past, Suryakumar used to play streaky innings where he would introduce fancy strokes like lapping the fast bowlers.Today, he removed the risk element out of his play and instead preferred the straight and full face of the bat. He had already cut Albie Morkel hard when offered width on the off side and then uppercut Thisara Perera when the Sri Lankan bowled short and outside off stump. But the best shot of his innings, and possibly the match, came in Morkel’s second over when, picking a fullish delivery quickly, Suryakumar punched the ball for a straight four and could not stop showing the full face of the bat in his follow through. It was Suryakumar’s way of telling Rising Pune Supergiants to watch out for him. Suryakumar was on the lookout for any bad balls. When R Ashwin flighted a ball into his legs, Suryakumar happily lofted the senior offspinner over long-on for his first six. When Ashwin came round the stumps to cramp him in his following over, Yadav once again repeated the stroke to deflate the offspinner’s confidence. Ashwin did not bowl another over in the match.According to Supergiants’ coach Stephen Fleming, his bowlers offered too many free hits for Suryakumar to prosper. But Suryakumar deserved more credit. This Ranji season, Suryakumar finished 14th overall in runs with 690 at 43.12 and played a pivotal role in Mumbai emerging as champions.Suryakumar’s strengths are playing the ball late, keeping a close eye on the field and opening the face of the bat at the last moment to run down the ball fine towards third man and fine leg. He can play all the strokes in the book. However, too many times in the past he has tried to be cute and paid the price. On Sunday, Suryakumar was attentive to MS Dhoni’s field changes and the bowlers’ plans. He also was aware that a partnership with Yusuf Pathan was crucial and he needed to bat deep if the Knight Riders were to get past the finish line. Most importantly, Suryakumar understood when to press the accelerator and not lose momentum. It was one thing that Ajinkya Rahane and Steve Smith could not be accused of during their 56-run partnership, which took 50 balls to achieve, as they were building the platform in the first innings. Although the Supergiants’ pair were dutiful throughout, their inability to hit the big release shots meant that their team might have fallen short by about 15 runs in the final count. It was not that Suryakumar’s was a perfect innings. In the end, he cursed himself for failing to read the googly from M Ashwin and was trapped lbw. The Knight Riders still needed 42 runs off 25 balls, which their lower order eventually managed by breaking a lot of sweat. But if not for his fifty, Suryakumar’s maiden half-century in the IPL, the Knight Riders might have quit the battle long back.
