Bangladesh's first-encounter blues, Afghan's first

Stats highlights from Afghanistan’s landmark win against Bangladesh in the Asia Cup, in Fatullah

Shiva Jayaraman01-Mar-2014

  • This was Afghanistan’s first win in ODIs against a Test nation in what was their fourth ODI against a Test nation. They had played Pakistan twice and Australia once before this. It took Bangladesh 28 ODI matches to win their first ODI against a Test nation.
  • With this defeat, Bangladesh have lost the first ODI they have played against five non-Test sides. In all, they have played nine non-Test nations. UAE, Bermuda, Hong Kong and Scotland are the teams they haven’t lost their first ODIs against. In 1997, they lost their first ODI against Kenya in Nairobi, though they were not a Test-side then. However, Bangladesh lost to Kenya in the 2003 World Cup, which was the first time they were playing Kenya since attaining the Test status in 2000. The other non-Test teams against whom Bangladesh have lost their first ODIs are Ireland, Canada and Netherlands.
  • Bangladesh have now lost six ODIs against a non-Test-playing team since attaining their Test status in November 2000. The last time they lost to such a side before this ODI was against Netherlands in Glasgow in 2010. Overall, they have lost 11 ODIs to non-Test teams.
  • Asghar Stanikzai’s unbeaten 90 in this match was his highest score and his fourth half-century in ODIs. His previous highest was also against a Test nation – he had scored 66 in the only ODI that Afghanistan have played against Australia, in Sharjah in 2012. Stanikzai was playing his 28th ODI, he has scored 631 runs at 28.68.
  • Samiullah Shenwari was run out just one run short of his highest score in ODIs. He had scored 82 against Kenya in Amstelveen in 2010. This was his fourth fifty in ODIs and his first against a Test nation.
  • This was only the second time in ODIs that there were two fifty-plus scores hit by Afghanistan’s middle order (No. 4 to No. 7). The last such instance for them came against Netherlands in Hague in 2010.
  • Stanikzai and Shenwari added 164 runs for the sixth wicket for Afghanistan, which is the highest sixth-wicket partnership in the Asia Cup, beating the 112 runs added by Alok Kapali and Mahmudullah against India in Karachi in 2008.
  • The partnership was Afghanistan’s highest for the sixth wicket in ODIs and their first century partnership for that wicket. Their previous highest partnership for the sixth wicket was 86, between Raees Ahmadzai and Shenwariagainst Scotland in Benoni in 2009.
  • This was also Afghanistan’s third-highest partnership for any wicket and only their sixth hundred partnership in ODIs. Karim Sadiq and Mohammad Shahzad added an unbeaten 218 runs for the second wicket against Scotland in Ayr in 2010, which is their highest partnership for any wicket.
  • Afghanistan’s innings seemed to be going nowhere in the batting Powerplay, with just 14 runs coming off the first four overs. By the 39th over, Afghanistan had meandered to a score of 137 for 5. The last two deliveries of the 40th over, however, were hit for fours by Shenwari, starting a carnage by the Afghanistan batsmen – in the next ten overs they plundered 107 runs. Ironically for Bangladesh, the last two deliveries of the 40th over almost snuffed out whatever hopes they had of winning the game as they lost Naeem Islam and Abdur Razak off them.
  • The 107 runs that Afghanistan scored in the last ten overs of their innings is the highest they have scored in these overs in ODIs, beating the 88 runs that they scored against Scotland in Benoni in 2009.
  • Between the last ball of the 38th over and the first ball of the 40th over, Bangladesh lost four wickets for four runs. This was their worst ever collapse for wicket fifth to eighth in ODIs and their fourth-worst four-wicket collapse in ODIs.
  • Ziaur Rahman raised hopes of a Bangladesh rescue-act with a 41-run cameo. This was the third-fastest innings of 30 or more runs in the Asia Cup. The three sixes hit by Rahman equalled the most by a batsman batting at No. 7 or lower in the Asia Cup.
  • The 40-run partnership between Rahman and Rubel Hossain is the second-highest for the ninth wicket in the Asia Cup. Harbhajan Singh and Zaheer Khan added 46 runs against Sri Lanka in the 2004 Asia Cup final, which is the highest for the ninth wicket.

Slot must ditch Szoboszlai and unleash Liverpool’s "star in the making"

Liverpool have been superb so far this season, and Arne Slot’s side have set an excellent platform from which they can kick on from. The Reds have lost just one game so far in the Premier League and the Champions League, currently topping the domestic table and sitting fifth in the new format of European football.

As per Sofascore, they already have four players with multiple goal involvements in the Premier League, after just seven games. Unsurprisingly, their most productive man in front of goal is Mohamed Salah. He has eight goals and assists to his name in the league so far. Luis Diaz is second with six goal involvements, Diogo Jota has four and Ibrahima Konate rounds out the list with two goals and assists to his name.

Liverpool star Mohamed Salah scores

However, despite a strong start, the Reds have had some players who have struggled this term, including midfielder Dominik Szoboszlai.

Szoboszlai’s season so far

Now into his second campaign as a Liverpool player, the 23-year-old Hungarian has not quite started as fast as some others under the tutelage of Slot, especially in the Premier League.

Dominik Szoboszlai for Liverpool

Indeed, the former RB Leipzig playmaker, who cost the Reds £60m, has arguably never lived up to the large fee the Reds paid for him back in 2023. He has played 54 times for the English giants, scoring eight times and grabbing six assists.

So far this term, the midfielder has played nine times, scoring once and grabbing three assists. He has made a fast start in the Champions League, scoring against AC Milan and then grabbing an assist against Bologna. In the Premier League, however, the Hungarian has managed just one assist, for Salah against Manchester United, and has not scored yet.

Dominik Szoboszlai

With that being said, his underlying stats from the Premier League this term do not make for poor reading. According to Squawka, the 23-year-old has created 2.1 chances and played 11.1 forward passes per 90 minutes.

Whilst the £120k-per-week star’s underlying stats are not too much of a concern, perhaps a few appearances off the bench could help alleviate the pressure and get the best out of him. Slot may have the ideal replacement for the midfielder waiting to be unleashed from the academy.

The player who could replace Szoboszlai

The player in question here is 17-year-old England under-18 international, Trey Nyoni. Described as a “star in the making” by football scout Antonio Mango, there is plenty of hype around the midfielder among Liverpool fans, among whom he is highly rated.

Trey Nyoni scores during pre season.

It is not only Mango, nor the Anfield faithful who believe Nyoni has the potential to make it right at the very top. Legendary former manager Jurgen Klopp gave him his debut against Southampton in the FA Cup last term and named him on the bench several times, including for the Carabao Cup final victory against Chelsea.

He made a superb impression on the first team during pre-season, starring against the likes of Arsenal, Real Betis and Manchester United, before scoring against Sevilla at Anfield in the final game of pre-season.

He showed his class in those games, keeping possession superbly well and breaking lines with ease from midfield. The England under-18 international is a wonderful ball-carrier, and completed 100% of his dribbles against Betis, as per Sofascore.

There is no doubt that the teenager is a wonderful talent. Should Slot decide to drop Szoboszlai for the Reds’ next outing against Chelsea, it could be the perfect chance to unleash Nyoni.

It would be a baptism of fire, but for a player who is clearly very talented, it could be the perfect platform from which he can try and establish his place in the first-team squad.

Liverpool wanted £235m star in the making but signed Szoboszlai instead

Liverpool’s midfield would have been taken to another level with this addition.

Aston Villa consider free agent signing to provide cover for Morgan Rogers

Aston Villa are one of a few Premier League clubs looking to sign a player who remains a free agent after the summer transfer window, according to a new report. The Villans got their Champions League campaign underway on Tuesday night in style, as they beat Young Boys 3-0.

Rogers continues excellent start to the season in Bern

Villa were very busy during the summer, adding several new players to the squad, their most high-profile being Amadou Onana, but it is a player from the January transfer window that is really excelling in the early stages of this campaign.

Morgan Rogers joined in the winter window from Middlesbrough, and while he has yet to get on the scoresheet or grab an assist this season, the midfielder has been really impressive, starting all five of their games so far.

Aston Villa winger Morgan Rogers

The midfielder has impressed so much that he has been labelled as being “underappreciated” and “one to watch” by football pundit Robbie Mustoe, while Tony Cascarino is excited about what the future holds for him and has compared him to Bayern Munich’s Jamal Musiala.

Cascarino said on Rogers: “I really like Morgan Rogers coming in. He scored a couple in the Under-21s against Austria. I think he’s going to be a player. He really looks; there’s something about him; he reminds me a little bit of Jamal Musiala.

“He’s that guy that picks up the ball, and he’ll just make runs, and he’ll create problems for others. He’s got a lot about him.

“Comparing him to Musiala, well, that type of player, that’s a really big praise because Musiala’s a real talent. But I do see something in Morgan Rogers where he’s got that ability.

“He gets in his stride, and he’s going quick, but he doesn’t look particularly quick, and yet people don’t get to him. He just seems to ride the tackles and not get phased.”

But Villa don’t want to just rely on Rogers, and the Premier League side are now looking at the free agent market to help ease the burden on the young star after another quality display in Switzerland this week.

Aston Villa considering move for free agent

According to HITC, Aston Villa are considering whether to make an offer to free agent Yusuf Yazici. As well as the Villans being interested, AFC Bournemouth, Crystal Palace, and Brentford are also keen on signing the experienced attacking midfielder.

Yazici has been without a club since the end of last season, as he left French side Lille following the end of his contract. The Turkey international was in Lille for five years, during which time he scored 29 goals and recorded 15 assists in 135 games.

The 27-year-old would be unlikely to start a lot at Villa, but the report claims he would be brought in to provide depth and cover behind Rogers, given the similarities of both players being versatile enough to play across the attack, allowing the youngster to develop without the burden of playing two games every week.

The news of Villa weighing up an offer for Yazici comes after his agents were said to have offered the midfielder to them earlier this month – it seems they were at least a little bit enticed by those talks, and could now make their move in the coming days and weeks.

Narine, the invisible

Knight Riders’ matchwinner, equipped with an altered action, gets back to work quietly at the Eden Gardens

Nagraj Gollapudi in Kolkata06-Apr-2015Pink shoes. Pink glares. The Mohawk. Sunil Narine stands out from the rest of the Kolkata Knight Riders squad even from a distance. Yet not many, including the media, are paying attention to the West Indies offspinner. It is three in the afternoon. Peak summer heat soaring at about 38 degrees centigrade along with Kolkata’s extreme humidity levels. It is unbearable. A fan, sitting behind the nets where Narine is bowling, collapses and has an epileptic fit, forcing Knight Riders physiotherapist Andrew Leipus to rush to the spot. Amid all this chaos, Narine remains unflustered. It is only his second day at training having endured a difficult last week. Forced by the BCCI diktat, he had to travel to the ICC-accredited centre in Chennai to get his acton retested despite having got a clearance from the testing centre at University of Loughborough in March.Although Narine got an all-clear from BCCI’s sub-committee dealing with suspect actions, the Knight Riders management fear that mentally it might have had an impact on him on the eve of the tournament. That pressure will not cease till sometime at least considering the BCCI has instructed the umpires to take tough stance against bowlers with suspect actions. But in the nets, with no umpires observing him, Narine is his usual languid self. He does not rush in to bowl. It does not bother him that his first few balls are easily dealt by Ryan ten Doeschate.Glares on, he takes the short run-up to deliver to ten Doeschate. Watching from behind the nets, to the untrained eye, it is difficult to pick the subtle changes Narine has carried out as part of the remodelling of his action.Ten minutes into his bowling, Narine flips the glares upside down and sticks them at the back of his head. He is now ready. There is a new batsman. Yusuf Pathan. The second ball he faces, Narine delivers the carom ball. The trajectory is a little flatter. But Yusuf has not read Narine’s hand as he defends unconvincingly. The next ball is flighted and it dips. Yusuf has to lunge forward to tap it safely. Few balls later Narine bowls a rank half tracker and Yusuf gleefuly steps back and pulls powerfully. Yusuf probably imagines it to be a six but Narine signals a four. Yusuf does not respond. Narine does the signal once more, this time with a modest smile. Yusuf acknowledges.A few more balls, Narine wraps up his training after 15 minutes and walks away into the dressing room only to emerge couple of hours later to enter the team bus. A few fans shout “Narine, Narine” and he acknowledges them by raising his right hand. The loudest cheers are reserved for “Yusuf bhai”, “Robin”, “Gambhir”, “Surya”.Even during the nets it is former Pakistan fast-bowling ace Wasim Akram, the Knights Riders bowling consultant, who is the cynosure of the 50-strong fans. ” shouts a young security guard.Another group of teenagers walk in excitedly and suddenly spot Bangladesh allrounder Shakib Al Hasan. They decide to take a selfie with him in the background. Not one is interested in Narine.Interestingly as you walk into and inside the Eden Gardens, Narine remains inconspicuous. Gambhir, Uthappa, Yusuf – all of them are staring down from huge billboards. Andre Russell and Morne Morkel are part of the screens that separate the Cricket Association of Bengal lobby and the home dressing rooms. There is a side profile of Narine that looks at you from the screen covering the visitor’s dressing room, but you are bound to miss it as it is partly hidden by a pillar.Knight Riders’ most valuable player remains invisible. Perhaps it suits him. Quiet in celebration. Quiet in agony.

Man City shortlist "amazing" Raphinha with Barca reluctantly open to sale

Manchester City have shortlisted Barcelona’s Raphinha as a potential transfer target but face stiff competition, according to a new report. The Blues had a rather quiet summer transfer window, but that may have been in preparation for a busy January or 2025 summer transfer window.

Wolves fans spot new Chris Kavanagh mistake before Man City's goal (Video)

Wolves fans will be even more furious with Sunday’s defeat to Man City after seeing this incident.

ByBrett Worthington Oct 21, 2024 Man City news and updates

Pep Guardiola’s side is going to have a firm focus on the upcoming games, but there is news away from the football that may have some supporters interested. The Blues appear to be keeping a close eye on potential transfer targets, as City are showing an interest in Facundo Buonanotte.

The Blues are not the only side interested in the Brighton player, who is currently out on loan at Leicester City, as Liverpool are also keeping an eye on the Argentine. Buonanotte has been rather impressive for the Foxes, and there is a possibility he could leave Brighton next summer, but only if they get an offer of around £25 million, which is a fee that both City and Liverpool are willing to pay.

Brighton midfielder Facundo Buonanotte.

Away from transfers, the future of Guardiola is another hot topic at the Etihad, and while they will be doing everything they can to extend his stay beyond this season, they also appear to be lining up potential replacements. Former Brighton boss Roberto De Zerbi is a potential candidate to replace Guardiola should he decide to leave. The Italian took over at French side Marseille in the summer and has made an impressive start, so much so that he is being linked to replacing one of the best managers the game has seen.

While City keep an eye on Buonanotte at Leicester, the Blues also have their eye on a Brazilian playing at Guardiola’s former club.

Latest on Man City links to "amazing" Raphinha

According to TEAMtalk, Manchester City have shortlisted Barcelona’s Raphinha as a target but will face competition for his signature. The 27-year-old, who has been labelled as “amazing” by writer Ben Mattinson in the past, has been at Barça since July 2022, when he joined from Leeds United.

The Brazilian has been a key contributor since joining the Spanish giants, and that hasn’t changed this season, even under Hansi Flick. His performances have put him on the radar of City, with reports claiming that they could look to sign him should Xabi Alonso replace Guardiola as manager.

However, City’s interest in Raphinha has been the case since the club was linked with Alonso. The Blues gathered information on the winger in the summer of 2023 as they looked at a possible replacement for Riyad Mahrez, and he remains a player of interest.

City have followed the Brazilian for over a year and a half now, and he remains on their shortlist, but at this stage he isn’t considered a priority target. For Barça, even though he has been so important to them, they are “reluctantly open” to selling Raphinha as he is one of several “sacrificable” players, as they look to improve their finances.

The Premier League side don’t have the most concrete interest in the player, as that comes from Saudi Arabia and Al-Nassr, as they have continued to keep an eye on him since 2023, when they had an offer turned down.

Adidas unveils the official match ball for the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup

Adidas reveals the official match ball that will be used for the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup

  • Adidas and FIFA have a long-standing relationship
  • The match ball is inspired by host nation, the United States
  • It features high-tech ball technology which allows for more accurate officiating decisions
  • WHAT HAPPENED?

Adidas has officially unveiled the match ball for the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup after being named the official supplier for the revamped tournament. The ball pays homage to the host nation, the USA, and features a 20-panel design along with various technologies to enhance performance. A standout feature is the integrated connected ball technology, which enables more accurate and faster officiating decisions.

Following the changes to UEFA’s various club competitions, FIFA also revamped their FIFA Club World Cup and June 2025 will mark the first-ever expanded edition. The tournament has been completely revamped and will take place in the United States of America between June 14 and July 13. The excitement surrounding the tournament was further built after the trophy was officially revealed in November 2024 and things have been taken up a notch now.

As per FIFA’s official press release, “The integrated connected ball technology sends inertial measurement unit data to the video-assistant-referee system at a rate of 500 times per second in real-time. When combined with player position data and the application of artificial intelligence, the technology helps video match officials to make faster offside decisions and can also aid them in identifying each individual touch of the ball, resulting in reduced delays in resolving specific incidents, e.g. possible handball offenses."

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

The new FIFA Club World Cup format has transformed the tournament into a brand new competition. The 21st edition will feature 32 teams instead of the standard 24 with each football federation given a slot. Thus as a result, UEFA was handed 12 team slots, CONMEBOL was given six, AFC, CAF, and CONCACAF were given four each while the host country and OFC were both given one team.

This tallies up to a total of 32 teams although the FIFA council added a few more rules and principles to decide which clubs will be allowed to participate in the yearly tournament. Each slot section has different rules in place and as a result, it has allowed the likes of Al Hilal, Flamengo, Chelsea, Boca Juniors, Inter Miami CF, and several other teams to make the cut.

WHAT LIES AHEAD FOR THE FIFA CLUB WORLD CUP?

The 2025 FIFA Club World Cup is set to serve as a precursor to the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which will be co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico. The tournament has generated both excitement and debate, with fans eager to see what lies ahead next summer. However, some critics have questioned the decision to expand the competition, arguing that the already packed fixture schedule will further strain players by adding another tournament at the end of the season.

So far, it remains to be seen just how well both FIFA and the various clubs involved handle the added pressure of an expanded tournament and an upcoming World Cup alongside the heavy season schedule.

Stuart Broad has 'found his rhythm' ahead of New Zealand series, says Peter Moores

Veteran seamer has taken 11 wickets at 24.09 across three County Championship appearances

ESPNcricinfo staff21-May-2022Stuart Broad has “found his rhythm” ahead of England’s upcoming Test series against New Zealand, according to his Nottinghamshire head coach Peter Moores.England confirmed this week that Broad – along with his long-time new-ball partner James Anderson – had been recalled to their squad for the first two Tests against New Zealand after their shock omission for the series defeat in the Caribbean. He has eased himself back into bowling after a long break following the Ashes, playing three games in the County Championship for Notts in the last month, all of them at Test grounds – two at Trent Bridge and the other at Lord’s, the venue for the first Test on June 2.Related

Broad has taken 11 wickets at 24.09 and chipped in with some quick lower-order runs, and Moores said that he will go into the Test series “in great shape”.”Stuart has done really well in his three matches for us,” Moores said. “He has done what you would expect from an international bowler. He gets better with every innings he plays, he has found his rhythm, which always takes a little bit of time – and he hasn’t played since January.”He has done what Stuart does: he leads the attack, he’s great to have around the lads, he’s a brilliant team man. I think he goes into those Test matches in great shape.”He has got some overs under his belt, he has bowled on flat pitches, which is what Test match pitches are like, and he will go along to the first Test feeling he can start his summer off, and England’s summer off, with a real bang.”

Stuart Broad takes his own advice to live in the moment

If Stuart Broad learned one thing from his dramatic post-Ashes axing, it was to not look too far beyond his next match. The old “one game at a time” phrase couldn’t be more yawn-inducing but Broad’s approach is much more nuanced than that. So, like his wise words to the England team mid-Ashes drubbing about focusing on the present rather than a future that might not come, Broad’s advice to himself about not viewing this week’s clash with New Zealand at Trent Bridge as potentially his last home-ground Test rings true.As things stand, there is no Test scheduled for his native Nottingham next year but, with England looking to take an unassailable 2-0 lead after their stirring win at Lord’s, Broad is revelling in being back in the action alongside fellow seam-bowling veteran James Anderson after both were controversially dumped for the fateful tour of the Caribbean in March.”I’ve changed my mindset over the winter and since Hobart,” Broad said. “It’s not looking too far ahead, it’s just enjoying each week for what it is, give everything, and then reset for the next week.”Jimmy turns 40 this year, four years ago was he thinking 2018 might be his last at Old Trafford? Probably not. That just takes your mind away from enjoying the week.”I started this season not knowing if I’d pull on the England shirt again, I was just enjoying every day for what it was. I wear the Notts shirt with the same pride as the England badge and I’ll attack this week with the same mindset: walk out on that first day, look around the stands, and know how lucky I am to be there.”Related

England’s five-wicket victory over New Zealand on Sunday’s fourth morning was their first in 10 matches played since they beat India at Headingley last August and heralded a new era under captain Ben Stokes and Test head coach Brendon McCullum.”It’s been one of the most fun weeks we’ve had as a team,” Broad said, “just the relaxed environment, the way we’re talking as a team. It’s not too structured, it’s just a case of what do you need to do to make you feel you’re 10-foot tall?”To see the way we’ve attacked that target shows that mindset. Things went our way – that no-ball makes it a different game – but it’s no mean feat chasing a score like that. That’s a mindset thing.”The no-ball referred to was Colin de Grandomme’s overstep which would have seen Stokes bowled for just 1. Stokes, who took over from former skipper Joe Root ahead of the New Zealand series, went on to make a valuable 54, sharing a significant stand with Root, who struck the winning runs in an unbeaten century the following day after joining forces with Ben Foakes to guide England past their target of 277.The match was Broad’s first under Stokes as captain – he was memorably dropped when Stokes stood in for Root against West Indies in 2020 – and he gave a positive appraisal of the new leadership.”It’s noticeable from Stokesy and Baz that it’s all about taking wickets,” Broad said. “To start the Stokes-McCullum era with a win is huge for us. To chase 277 is awesome for us as a group.”I don’t think anyone who has come to Lord’s can argue it’s not been fun, the style of cricket, edge-of-the-seat at times, the crowd has got involved and it’s something we want to take to Trent Bridge.”And Broad reiterated that his relationship with Root remained strong, despite hints of tension during the Ashes and Root being part of the selection panel which left him out for the subsequent West Indies tour.”Joe and I spoke at length when he stood down as captain and I said to him how much he’s meant to me as a captain, and what a privilege it was playing under him,” Broad said. “I told him I hope he really enjoys the next few years, all that pressure has gone now, he’s already a legend of the game, so he can just go out there and enjoy it.”Joe and I are great friends and I’ve always been someone who can distinguish between business and pleasure. I can’t fall out with someone because they don’t pick me in a team, that would be a bit pathetic.”Broad took two wickets in three balls in a trademark burst•AFP/Getty Images

Broad, who turns 36 this month, would not have been the most left-field option as captain following Root’s decision to step down – had his place in the side been secure at the time – given his experience and the ease with which he fronts the media. But he played a leadership role on and off the field during the first New Zealand Test, buying into England’s succession planning by joining Anderson and impressive debutant seamer Matthew Potts on a pre-match round of golf. Broad also helped whip the Lord’s crowd into a frenzy in the middle of an extraordinary three-ball turning point during the third day when he dismissed centurion Daryl Mitchell and bowled Kyle Jamieson for a duck either side of de Grandhomme’s bizarre run-out while Broad was belting out an unsuccessful appeal for lbw.”Yesterday was probably using my experience, thinking the team needs something here,” Broad said. “It adds a different pressure though. If you whip the crowd up, then bowl a half-volley and go for four you look daft. But I quite like that pressure. You’ll see this summer, when I feel we need that extra lift and momentum, I’ll do it again.”People say Trent Bridge and Edgbaston are the best Test match atmospheres in the country and after what was a really interesting win at Lord’s, it should see people who are heading to Trent Bridge have a lot of excitement about what is to come.”

His batting’s been fantastic, he’s got good power, but then you couple that with what he can do in the field, it’s pretty special as well. He’s taken a lot of catches this tour, but the speed he has saves us runs on the field too.Glenn Phillips scored 76 off 41 balls in the second T20I against West Indies•Associated Press

It isn’t just Phillips who has sparkled in New Zealand’s middle order during this West Indies tour. James Neesham and Daryl Mitchell have also played vital finishing knocks in the first two T20Is.”It’s a nice luxury when you look around [the dressing room],” Stead said. “Guys like Jimmy Neesham, the way he finished that first game was fantastic, coming in and scoring 33 off 15. Daryl Mitchell showed his power in the second game, striking at 200 or a little bit more [48 in 20] as well. We’ve got Michael Bracewell, who played the last game, who adds power, and [we’re] yet to see Mitchell Santner [show his skills on this tour], and we saw what he can do in the Netherlands as well [where he scored an unbeaten 42-ball 77 in the second T20I].”In both their matches on this Caribbean tour so far, New Zealand batted first and scored 180-plus totals, finishing with a flourish after solid starts anchored by Devon Conway (43 and 42). Stead was pleased with the way New Zealand’s batters have handled slow, turning conditions in Kingston.”The wickets have been interesting,” he said. “They look like they take a wee bit of turn, and they’ve sort of held a wee bit. The way our guys have come in and batted around usually one person in the innings has been great, and the thing that’s been pleasing that we’ve done is our match-ups have been very good and we’ve taken those on wholeheartedly.”
