Euro chief personally wants to sign "brilliant" Rangers star this summer

da spicy bet: In what would be a major blow for those at Ibrox, Sevilla chief Victor Orta now reportedly wants to sign one of Rangers’ best players in a summer swoop when the transfer window swings open.

Rangers transfer news

da bet sport: Whilst there’s no doubt that the Gers have had a season to forget given that they’re sitting as many as 16 points adrift of Celtic in the Scottish Premiership, the Europa League could yet salvage things.

Having defeated Jose Mourinho’s Fenerbahce 3-1 in midweek, Rangers will now welcome the Turkish giants to Ibrox with one foot in the last eight.

Their success on the European stage may not come without consequences, with the transfer window approaching and certain stars already emerging on the radar of several sides.

Following such a frustrating campaign on the domestic front, which ultimately brought Philippe Clement’s tenure to an end, the last thing that the Scottish giants need is a major departure on the pitch. However, reports suggest that they could be getting exactly that.

According to reports in Spain, Sevilla chief Victor Orta personally wants to sign Hamza Igamane for the Spanish club this summer following his excellent campaign in a struggling Rangers side.

Rafa Benitez upgrade: 49ers keen on Rangers move for 4-3-3 manager

The potential Rangers owners are reportedly eyeing up a move for this manager.

ByDan Emery Mar 9, 2025

With Sevilla joining Everton in the race to secure the winger’s signature, the Gers are set to face quite the battle if they want to keep hold of their star man this summer, especially after the season they’ve had.

Whilst those around him have struggled, Igamane has scored 13 goals in all competitions, including three in the Europa League as Rangers have progressed out of the league phase and are one game away from a place in the last eight.

Rangers must keep "brilliant" Igamane

Whilst there may be some temptation to cash in on their star man to boost their finances this summer, Rangers should do everything to keep hold of Igamane for the sake of their new manager next season.

The forward is still just 22 years old and approaching the peak of his powers with every game, which means that he’s ready to make an impact on the pitch.

If the Gers are to consider their finances, then waiting another campaign to sell Igamane could be their answer. At such a young age, there’s every indication that he’s yet to reach his best in a Rangers shirt. Only then should Rangers should consider cashing in.

Hamza Igamane

For now, the likes of Derek Ferguson should continue to enjoy his talents. The former Rangers midfielder was full of praise for Igamane earlier this season, telling BBC Sportsound (as per The Scotsman): “Igamane is a real breath of fresh air, the young man. The manager said he was trying to get him up to speed, but in the last few games he has been nothing short of brilliant.

“He is off the cuff and he had three or four nutmegs this afternoon – and took his goal brilliantly. I don’t know if you remember Ted McMinn, but Igamane’s got that unpredictability.”

Jack Haynes, Pat Brown see off Lancashire despite Jos Buttler's best efforts

Mitchell Santner plays key role as Worcestershire cruise to victory with 2.2 overs to spare

ECB Reporters Network20-Jun-2023Jos Buttler hit his highest Vitality Blast score of the summer but it proved in vain as Lancashire Lightning crashed to a seven-wicket setback against Worcestershire Rapids at New Road.England’s white-ball captain rescued his side from 38 for 4 by smashing 74 off 54 balls with two sixes and five fours. He clearly has a liking for the Rapids attack as his only other fifty in the competition this summer came against them at Blackpool. But Lightning were restricted to 164 for 8 with former England T20 player Pat Brown claiming three more wickets to take his tally for the campaign to 19. He received excellent support from Mitchell Santner and the New Zealand allrounder then clubbed his way to 49 off 27 balls as Worcestershire triumphed with 14 balls to spare.Jack Haynes showed his class in helping Santner add 81 in eight overs and he then pressed his foot on the accelerator in making a decisive 63 from 43 balls. The Rapids have now moved level on 12 points with Lancashire and they have a game in hand.Lancashire skipper Liam Livingstone opted to bat after the toss but his side ran into early trouble. Phil Salt smashed the second ball of the innings from Dillon Pennington over the midwicket boundary but it was his only scoring stroke. He went for another legside hit later in the over and skied a catch to Usama Mir at cover.Santner shared the new ball and also made a breakthrough as Luke Wells attempted a reverse sweep and was lbw. Pennington failed to hold onto a return catch from Dane Vilas but it did not prove a costly miss as Pat Brown struck twice in the final over of the powerplay.Vilas pulled Brown straight into the hands of midwicket and the next delivery accounted for Daryl Mitchell as he nicked a ball of extra bounce through to keeper Ben Cox.Lancashire were perched uneasily on 38 for 4 but Buttler and Rob Jones batted sensibly to lead a recovery. At first they were content to work the ball around against the Rapids spinners but gradually accelerated.Butler followed up his half-century in Lancashire’s win over Worcestershire at Southport by completing a 40-ball fifty with his fifth boundary, a delightful late cut at Brown’s expense.Jones opened his shoulder to clear the long off boundary against Brett D’Oliveira. But Santner broke a 98-run stand when Jones attempted a reverse sweep and only found the hands of Ed Pollock on the cover boundary.Josh Tongue then dismissed Buttler and Livingstone in an action-packed penultimate over. Butler’s fine knock ended on 74 when he holed out to cover and then Livingstone, who surprisingly held himself back until there were only 10 balls remaining, smashed his opening two deliveries for maximums. After a no-ball, Livingstone carved the third legitimate ball he faced to cover. And there was time for Brown to pick up his third wicket as Luke Wood found long-on.Jones held onto a diving catch at cover to dismiss D’Oliveira in Jack Blatherwick’s first over but Santner and Haynes took the game away from the Lightning during a stand of 81 in eight overs.Santner was particularly aggressive, striking Livingstone and Wells for maximums and there were also five fours in his 49 before he backed away to try and cut Wood and only feathered through to Buttler.Haynes then took over the mantle of chief aggressor and a regal cover drive off Tom Hartley enabled him to complete his half century. With Adam Hose also in good nick, the Rapids were on the verge of victory when Haynes holed out to backward square leg of Blatherwick.

Joe Root added to England squad for first Ireland ODI

Root included for Headingley match at own request as Harry Brook sits out series after World Cup call

Joe Root has been added to England’s squad for their first ODI against Ireland at Headingley on Wednesday at his own request, as he bids to rediscover his 50-over form ahead of next month’s World Cup.England’s initial 13-man squad to play Ireland did not feature any of their provisional 15-man World Cup squad. But Harry Brook was added to the finalised World Cup squad on Sunday, replacing Jason Roy, and will now rest during the Ireland series after a busy summer across formats.Root struggled for form during England’s 3-1 series win over New Zealand, making 6, 0 and 4 in the first three games before a scratchy, 40-ball 29 in the fourth ODI at Lord’s which exposed his lack of rhythm in the format. All told, he has only batted 16 times in ODIs since the 2019 World Cup.Related

Root: 'I average more with reverse scoop than with forward defence'

Buttler stresses loyalty to old guard as Roy, Root struggle for 50-over form

Roy axed from World Cup squad, Brook included

Luke Wright, England’s national selector, said that Root had “asked to be involved” in Wednesday’s first ODI. “Like for a lot of people, he is getting that rhythm of 50-over cricket,” Wright said. “Obviously we don’t play [much of] it in this country, but a lot of those lads haven’t played a lot of 50-over cricket, especially someone like Joe.”He just wanted a bit more time. It’s a great thing for someone to still have that desire to keep wanting to do more and more. It shows where he’s at with his game and what makes him such a world-class player that, when he doesn’t feel quite right, he still wants to tinker and do more. As much as we probably thought he needed a break as well, he just wanted another go.”Explaining the decision to rest Brook after a quiet series against New Zealand – he made 25, 2 and 10 in his three innings – Wright said: “You only have to look at what he’s had on this summer. He’s had one of the busiest summers out of everyone from the Ashes, into the Hundred and then these series.”It would be silly of us to not give him a break. You always have to look at how much more batting does someone need versus what mental break do they need. I think in this case, we wanted to give him that break before the World Cup so he’s going to rest for that Ireland series.”Wright also suggested that Roy could be involved in the second or third ODIs against Ireland, with England happy to leave the decision in his hands. Roy was told this weekend that he had been dropped from the World Cup squad after he failed to make an appearance against New Zealand, suffering back spasms on the mornings of the first and third ODIs.”We’ve given Jason the option of being involved and he still has the option,” Wright said. “He wasn’t expected to be in that Ireland squad and then to get the news that he was missing out on the World Cup came as a bit of a hammer blow, so we’ve left that with Jason…. We’ll work on that one over the next few days.”With the World Cup squad due to travel to India on September 27 ahead of two warm-up games in Guwahati, England have picked a second-string squad for their Ireland series that will be captained by Zak Crawley. They will train in Leeds on Monday ahead of Wednesday’s series opener, though the weather forecast suggests that game is likely to be washed out.

Healy out of WBBL, faces race to be fit for India series

Alyssa Healy is racing the clock to play in Australia’s looming ODIs against India after being ruled out of the remainder of the WBBL with a knee injury.Sydney Sixers on Saturday said Australia’s captain would not play for them again this tournament, after picking up an injury in her left knee. Australia’s three-match ODI series starts four days after the WBBL final, leaving Healy in significant doubt for international duties.Related

Healy did not keep in Sixers’ last-start loss against Brisbane Heat because of body management, and had entered the tournament with a foot injury that ended her T20 World Cup early. Australia host India in three ODIs, before travelling to New Zealand over Christmas for three more one-dayers.It’s understood Healy will be assessed in the next fortnight ahead of those two series, with a squad to be announced next weekend. The injury is not believed to be serious enough to have her in any current doubt for the multi-format Ashes, which begin with an ODI at North Sydney on January 12.Healy had warned on her return from her foot injury that she may need to be managed through the summer.”There are higher powers sitting above that are quite vocal in what can and can’t happen, which I completely understand,” Healy said earlier this month.  “Being skipper as well is a fairly big role for me. I want to be available for as much of the summer as I can.”I’ve hardly played a game for the Sixers for the past two seasons, and it’s a place I really enjoy playing cricket.  I want to be available for every game that I possibly can, but the reality is that might not be the case.”It’s going to be managing the pain, function and what I can and can’t do [all summer]. How I pull up from games is going to be really important as well.”Healy’s injury comes as a serious blow to Sixers, who face the prospect of needing to win their last three matches to make the WBBL finals. If Healy does miss international matches, Tahlia McGrath would be expected to deputise as captain again after doing so in the World Cup.

England get rowdy in London Borough of Barbados

Visitors crash the party through dominant knocks from Joe Root and Dan Lawrence

Cameron Ponsonby16-Mar-2022As you get off the plane in Barbados and walk into arrivals, the first two posters you’re greeted with are of Garry Sobers and Rihanna. Cricket and entertainment. Sounds good.Today, with thousands of England fans in attendance, the two combined as Joe Root and Dan Lawrence’s dominant 164-run stand off 269 balls took over proceedings, much to the joy of those in attendance at the Kensington Oval in the London Borough of Barbados.”He’ll be delighted to be not out overnight following another good hundred last week,” Marcus Trescothick, England’s batting coach, said of Root’s unbeaten 119. “[For him] to do it all again he’ll be delighted. It’s a real pleasure to sit there and watch it unfold and see how he goes about it.Related

“To see him batting in the fashion he has, the mental discipline and approach he’s putting into his batting to come back and start fresh every time… it’s an honour to stand there and throw at him and then to sit back and watch him all day.”Trescothick was also glowing in his praise of Lawrence’s performance, who scored a career-best 91 before being at caught cover off what was scheduled to be the penultimate ball of the day’s play.”Absolutely,” Trescothick replied when asked whether England would be focusing on the positives from Lawrence’s innings rather than the pain of narrowly missing out on a maiden Test match hundred. “You always take the positives. And then we try to understand what happened there? Did anything change? Those are the sort of questions we’ll sit down and talk about.”But this was a party that West Indies allowed to happen. Root was caught behind off what seemed like an inside edge on 23, only for it not to be reviewed. He was dropped down the leg side by Josh Da Silva on 34. And on 87, he should’ve been run out by John Campbell. To make matters worse, Lawrence was also dropped on 72, as Alzarri Joseph let a head-high slip catch split his hands and run away to the boundary. As a result, having shared an awkward drink or two with England in a turgid first session and shared a pleasant dinner with them in the second, in the third, West Indies allowed Root and Lawrence to invite themselves back to theirs for afters and watched on as the two raided the drinks cabinet and fridge in equal measure.”Kraigg, you got anything I could eat? Starving.”The runs flowed on the pitch as quickly as the Banks lager and rum punch flowed off it. It was loud. Lawrence’s leg-side flicks were loud. Root’s pulls and reverse sweeps were loud. The England fans. Loud. For the most part, this wasn’t the stereotypical Barmy Army showing that consists solely of the continued dirge of just repeating “Barmy Army!” *dooph dooph* “Barmy Army!” *dooph dooph* – rather 8000 people spending their day with one foot in the land of Sobers and the other in the land of Rihanna, just as they were told to on arrival. It was a party.Of course, as the day came to a close, “Sweet Caroline” got one more play than would otherwise be deemed socially acceptable and the dooph dooph chants made their return. The sun going down at the end of a day at the cricket is like the moment on most evenings out where the lights go up and reveal the mass of destruction, sweat and alcohol that the darkness had previously hidden. If anything, this way around is better. The highlight of the day from an English perspective was the noise that greeted Root’s century as the Greenidge and Haynes Stand morphed into the Kop. The open-air nature of cricket grounds means it is not often you get that visceral echo that is so synonymous with football grounds, but here you did.”It was brilliant, wasn’t it?” Trescothick said. “A real English contingent throughout the island at the moment and great support throughout. We’re lucky that we get great support wherever we go and to see it here, it was pretty much a home game for us so it’s really nice to have.”The Brits were abroad. And they were rowdy. Both off the pitch and on.

Globetrotter Peter Hatzoglou's post-birthday bash in Abu Dhabi

Legspinner bags 3 for 6 to lead Team Abu Dhabi to victory, two days after his 24th birthday

Aadam Patel29-Nov-2022Peter Hatzoglou had no intentions of spending his 24th birthday in Abu Dhabi. But he is now living the life of a T20 freelancer and with the way he is going, he will have plenty more franchise gigs to keep him busy and perhaps, many more birthdays abroad.Hatzoglou finished his birthday celebrations on Sunday by watching Musical in Abu Dhabi and by all accounts, enjoyed his Monday off. On Tuesday afternoon, he decided that the celebrations were carrying on. Hatzoglou turned up and bowled two overs against Moeen Ali’s Morrisville Samp Army, dismissing Johnson Charles, Moeen and David Miller as he inspired Team Abu Dhabi to their second successive win.Related

Morgan turns back the clock as Strikers topple Gladiators

In a side with the likes of Alex Hales, Chris Lynn, James Vince and Adil Rashid, Hatzoglou is very much becoming the main attraction. In his first over, he tossed the ball up to Charles and found his top edge before Moeen hit one straight to Fabian Allen at cover, who held on superbly with one hand. And when Hatzoglou bowled the destructive Miller in his second over, Morrisville Samp Army were left reeling at 21 for 5 and their chase of 101 was as good as done. That they ultimately reached 82 for 9 was thanks to Basil Hameed, who smashed 47 not out off 18 balls to ensure the scoreboard looked remotely respectable. No other Samp Army batter reached double figures. But this was Hatzoglou’s day out and in many ways, this is becoming his tournament. In a format where teams tend to score at at least ten an over, his figures of 3 for 6 was quite something. His economy rate across four games is just seven and he is taking a wicket every seven balls. On November 17, Hatzoglou sat his CFA (Chartered Financial Analyst) exams and flew out to UAE for the Abu Dhabi T10 later that day. He is still awaiting the results from those exams but it’s safe to say he is passing pretty much every test that’s come his way with a ball in hand.In addition to Tuesday’s three wickets, his scalps in the tournament include the likes of Suresh Raina and Tim David. Right now, he has seven wickets for just 56 runs in the eight overs he has bowled in the tournament.”Every batter’s really trying to take you down,” Hatzoglou said after the match. “My plan has not really changed to be honest. I’ve never played T10 before, but I’m just trying to hit the top of the stumps with a few more variations than what I would probably use in a T20.”He wasn’t even meant to be here if it wasn’t for a last minute pick by Paul Farbrace and co at Team Abu Dhabi. And in true Hatzoglou style, he didn’t even know till he received a message from Tymal Mills, who he knows from their time together at Perth Scorchers.”I was actually in Spain on a golf trip after The Hundred with some mates when the draft happened,” said Hatzoglou, “so I put the YouTube stream on and I didn’t get picked up. So we turned the draft stream off and got on with our night but what I didn’t realise was that there was an additional pick for each team. I got picked then and didn’t know but I got a message from Tymal Mills and that’s when I realised I’d actually been picked up.”Evidently there is something about the man who described himself as an “accidental cricketer” that is proving to be a struggle for batters in the tournament. Whether it is his eye-catching action that is very much like the India wristspinner Ravi Bishnoi or the pace and energy that he bowls with, it is the overall element of surprise that Hatzoglou believes is one of his great strengths.”When I was at Oval Invincibles in The Hundred, we looked at my bowling with the analyst Freddie Wilde,” he said. “That pace is something that’s very unique and the drift and bounce I get. I get virtually but no spin but generally speaking, that surprise factor has been huge for me.”Over time, that element of surprise will no doubt diminish but for now it is working wonders and as the saying goes “if it ain’t broken, then why fix it?”Hatzoglou will head to the Big Bash League after the Abu Dhabi T10 but unlike last year, he won’t be returning to the KPMG office in the new year. The plan is to fully embrace the T20 globetrotter lifestyle. Who knows what comes next but the thought alone is exciting enough.

'I'll take a screenshot!' – Tom Brady jokes he'll share WhatsApp message with Ryan Reynolds & Rob McElhenney that shows Birmingham are top of Championship & Wrexham are rock bottom

Tom Brady has joked that he will take a screenshot of the current Championship table that shows Birmingham at the top, while Wrexham, due to alphabetical order, are bottom. Brady, who owns a minority stake in Birmingham, experienced a nightmare start to his association with the English club as they went down from the Championship in the 2023-24 campaign. However, the Blues bounced back in style as they won the League One title last year, while Wrexham finished second. Both teams were then granted a direct entry to the English second-tier.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Since the 2024-25 campaign, where Birmingham and Wrexham competed side-by-side, the two teams developed a fun rivalry, which has been named the Hollywood derby, due to the presence of American owners in both clubs. Ahead of a new campaign, where the two teams will renew their rivalry, Brady jokingly claimed that he would take a screenshot of the current league table, which shows Birmingham at the top, while the Welsh side are at the bottom of the pit.

  • WHAT BRADY SAID

Speaking on the rivalry, the NFL legend told : "I think it's a fun rivalry for sure. I don't wanna create any distractions for those players on the pitch but for Rob and Tom Wagner and Ryan, we all have a friendly rivalry going here as well offline.

When asked if they have a WhatsApp group and whether he would share a screenshot of the current league table with the Wrexham bosses, Brady replied: "We do, we have a good chain that constantly goes on. And again I think we're always paying attention to one another.

"That could all change pretty quickly. I think our start is August 8th, so things change very quickly in sport. I agree, I'll take a screenshot of that! Make sure they see that!"

Cooper Connolly extends Scorchers' dominance over Stars on opening night

Chasing 147, Scorchers were in trouble at 37 for 3 before Connolly and captain Ashton Turner combined for a match-turning 68-run partnership

Tristan Lavalette15-Dec-2024
On a ground he has played the hero before, allrounder Cooper Connolly stepped up with a game-changing half-century as Perth Scorchers continued their long-time dominance over Melbourne Stars in the BBL season-opener at Optus Stadium.Chasing 147, Scorchers were in trouble at 37 for 3 before Connolly and captain Ashton Turner combined for a 68-run partnership. Returning from a fractured hand sustained on the ground in last month’s third ODI against Pakistan, Connolly hit 64 from 51 balls before Turner sealed the result in trademark composed fashion. There was late drama when Stars batter Hilton Cartwright was stretchered off the ground in a mini-ambulance with what appeared to be a neck injury. He had given chase from deep point in a bid to prevent a boundary from Connolly and seemed to jar his neck as he sprawled across the turf.Cartwright, a Western Australian cricketer, had the support of a neck brace as he left the ground to warm applause from the fans before being taken to hospital. It was the seventh straight win for Scorchers over Stars much to the delight of the 30,649 crowd – a record for a BBL season-opener.

Connolly and Turner lift weakened Scorchers batting

Stars’ score of 146 for 9 appeared under par, but there were concerns over a weakened Scorchers’ batting line-up missing injured No.3 Aaron Hardie and Josh Inglis, who is part of Australia’s Test squad.Expectations were high over New Zealand opener Finn Allen, who had tuned up for his Scorchers debut with a succession of massive hits during an intra-squad match at the WACA.Allen didn’t bother with a sighter as he launched compatriot Adam Milne for a massive six over wide long-on to trigger bedlam among the orange-garbed fans in the terraces. But he was bowled by Milne on the next delivery before Scorchers slumped further when English batters top-order Keaton Jennings and Matt Hurst struggled to handle the extra bounce. In familair scenes, Turner came to the crease and brought calmness to the middle. He started slowly in trademark style as Connolly did the bulk of the damage.Connolly has said his preference is to bat at No.6 but his flexibility came to the fore as he reached his maiden BBL half-century. He was not able to stay there at the end, like he memorably did in the final of BBL 12. He fell after when Scorchers took the power surge in the 14th over but Turner, who has missed much of the domestic season with injuries, finished the job with an unbeaten 37 as Scorchers reached the target in the 18th over.

Same ol’ Scorchers attack

New season, same old menacing Scorchers attack. It was like a collection of greatest hits for this reliable group of bowlers.Left-arm quick Jason Behrendorff has for years been a devastating weapon with the new ball and this was no exception. He didn’t take wickets in his opening two-over spell, but indirectly helped account for the early dismissals of Joe Clarke and Sam Harper.Behrendorff conjured trademark dangerous swing and started the season with a maiden. The pressure built on Stars with Jhye Richardson the beneficiary at the other end as he capped Scorchers’ early dominance by dismissing Harper plumb lbw as he grinned widely before appealing to the umpire, who raised his finger in a decision that was upheld on review.Richardson capped his fine performance with the wicket of Beau Webster, who had been released from Australia’s Test squad, in the 17th over.It was a well-rounded effort from a full-strength Scorchers attack with speedster Lance Morris bowling at speeds touching 145 kmh, while left-arm spinners Ashton Agar and Connolly each took a wicket in their returns from injuries.

Stoinis starts captaincy reign well before run-out

It’s a new era for Stars, a high-profile franchise that are famously titleless, with Marcus Stoinis taking the captaincy reins from Glenn Maxwell, who stepped down after five seasons in the role.Stoinis came to the crease under pressure but he’s well used to these fast and bouncy conditions having come up through the Western Australian cricket ranks. And he met fire with fire, taking a liking to Morris’ extra pace before smashing Agar for a huge six down the ground. In the process he became the sixth batter in BBL history to reach 100 sixes. With batting conditions becoming easier, Stoinis attempted to bludgeon every delivery like when he launched into a full-pitched Richardson delivery only to break his bat in half. But two deliveries later Stoinis took off for a quick single only for Tye at mid-on to produce a spectacular direct hit to throw down the stumps at the bowler’s end. Stoinis instantly knew his fate and was clearly livid as he threw his head back and chucked his bat in the air.Stoinis trudged off after making 37 off 33 balls but Tom Curran, recruited from Sydney Sixers, gave them a lift in the backend with 37 off 19 balls. But it wasn’t enough as their shorthanded attack missing Scott Boland could not defend the sub-par total.
