PCA seeks collective solutions as players face prospect of pay cuts

ECB will put proposals to players’ trade union this week

Matt Roller30-Mar-2020PCA chief executive Tony Irish has stressed the need for collective decision-making as cricketers in England and Wales face pay cuts and the prospect of being furloughed as the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic threatens to drastically curtail the 2020 season. The ECB have been involved in regular meetings with stakeholders – broadcasters, clubs and players – since it became apparent that the domestic season would be unable to start on time, and gave guidance to counties last week advising them on furloughing their employees under the UK government’s job retention scheme. The scheme allows employers to place their staff on temporary leaves of absence, during which time the government will pay the lower of £2,500 a month or 80% of their salary. Glamorgan and Yorkshire have already furloughed the majority of their non-playing staff, and other counties are likely to follow suit.ALSO READ: Coronavirus outbreak – county cricket latestLater this week, the ECB will put a series of proposals to the PCA (the players’ trade union) and to counties, most likely as part of their emergency financial package. Some clubs are likely to take advantage of the government’s scheme, which would enable significant savings at a time when revenue has fallen “off a cliff”, as Lancashire chief executive Daniel Gidney has put it.”We are aware that COVID-19 is having a very significant impact on cricket and that solutions need to be found for the challenges that we all face,” Irish said. “It’s an unprecedented time filled with uncertainty and naturally that brings lots of speculation. Much of that currently is around furloughing of players and wage cuts for players.”We believe that solutions should be sought, and where possible agreed, collectively. We understand that recommendations or proposals will be put to us during this week.”We will work through those with the players and then with the ECB and the first-class counties with a view to seeking agreed solutions.”While it has been suggested that England’s centrally-contracted players, some of whom earn an annual salary of around £1million, might have their pay cut to help ensure that the game can survive the crisis, the PA news agency reported on Sunday that the terms of their contracts mean any such move would have to be a voluntary one.As things stand, the season is due to start on May 28 with the opening fixtures in the T20 Blast, but it is highly unlikely that will be possible, with Michael Gove, the government minister, saying at a press conference on Sunday that the UK should prepare for a “significant period” of lockdown and that things “will get worse” before they get better.County groundsmen will have plenty of time to prepare their pitches for the summer•Getty Images

It is hoped that an abbreviated season will still be possible, with the T20 Blast and the Hundred set to be prioritised as the most lucrative competitions. While several smaller counties have been heavily reliant on grants from the ECB in recent years, both Northamptonshire and Derbyshire posted strong financial results for 2019, and Durham chief executive Tim Bostock has suggested that it is the larger counties – those which have diversified income streams – that will suffer most from the crisis, with hotel and conference room bookings cancelled en masse.”They’ve got businesses that rely on income outside of ECB regular monthly funding – particularly I can think of Lancashire, Warwickshire and Yorkshire, the Ageas Bowl,” Bostock told talkSPORT.”They’ve done the right thing, they’ve diversified so that they can survive without ECB income, but what that has meant is… that has fallen off the edge of a cliff through no fault of their own. That is a major challenge. A club like Durham – a larger percentage of our income comes from the guaranteed ECB income as a result of the new television deal, and therefore we are much less exposed.”The ECB is also keen to ensure that club cricket is able to survive the crisis, with all recreational cricket and age-group programmes All Stars and Dynamos currently suspended indefinitely. On Friday, the governing body informed clubs that repayments on the scheme that allows clubs to take out interest-free loans to complete development work have been suspended until May 2021.

Frustrated Arne Slot says Liverpool must blame themselves as Reds boss slams lack of chances in stunning loss to Nottingham Forest

  • WHAT HAPPENED?

Liverpool failed to score at home for just the second time in 2024, leaving Slot frustrated as his team gave away a 72nd minute winner to Nottingham Forest. The Dutch manager rued Liverpool's lack of control in the final third, which saw his side lose possession deep in the Forest half, allowing Callum Hudson-Odoi the chance to finish off a counter attack for the winner.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

The result is Forest's first win at Anfield in 55 years, with their unbeaten start leaving them just one point behind Liverpool in the Premier League table after four games. Liverpool, meanwhile, remain second behind Manchester City, although Pep Guardiola's side now have a three-point lead over their rivals at the top of the division.

    WHAT SLOT SAID

Slot said: "The result frustrates me the most and we cannot be happy about how the game went. It was a stop-start game and we hardly created any chances. We only have to look at ourselves, we have to be better. Far too many times we lost the ball around the area, it was not good enough. We have to be better with the ball.

"Our decisions and execution wasn't good enough. In general we defended quite well but the two fast players came on and made it difficult. We took a lot of risk and in the end it was a very good goal."

WHAT NEXT FOR SLOT AND LIVERPOOL?

Liverpool will be looking to bounce back from their disappointing defeat when they travel to face AC Milan in the Champions League on Tuesday. Slot will then have a chance to make amends at Anfield in the Reds' following Premier League game against Bournemouth next weekend.

Newcastle planning to replace player who starred vs Wolves

With Newcastle United firmly in the mix for European football this season, PIF's emphasis is now on making the right signings to ensure that the Magpie's foray into the Champions League is not a one-off.

Newcastle's defensive inconsistencies

Despite sitting eighth in the Premier League, Newcastle have struggled on the defensive front this season. The Tyneside outfit have conceded 45 goals this season, almost twice as many as the league's best defensive side Arsenal who have only conceded 23.

Much of this inability to keep the ball out of the net has stemmed from injuries to key players. Nick Pope's absence between the sticks has been noticeable, whilst first choice central defender Sven Botman has only managed fourteen starts this season. Useful backup Matt Target has also been ruled out for the remainder of the campaign.

This defensive headache for Eddie Howe has seen the Newcastle boss deploy a wide array of players to plug gaps in the defence. Once outcast Jamaal Lascelles has seen regular game time this season, whilst Dan Burn has been a regular fixture at full back, starting 21 times this season.

It is clear that PIF feel that the next step for Newcastle is to upgrade on these areas and ensure that the Magpies are ready to compete with Europe's elite.

Magpies eye Burn replacement

Speaking to Football Insider's Pete O'Rourke, sources around Newcastle state that the club are in the market for a new left back this summer. With regular European football the hope of those at St James' Park, O'Rourke states that the club want a “more productive” left-back option who can provide a greater attacking threat than Burn.

Newcastle defender Dan Burn.

This news will have a mixed reaction among Newcastle fans with many of the Magpies' faithful having fond memories of the 31-year-old's goal in this season's historic 4-1 victory over PSG in the Champions League. Even in recent games, Burn has impressed, with the defender earning a 7.5 WhoScored rating in Saturday's win over Wolves, the joint highest of any defender on the pitch.

A diligent servant at Newcastle, the Blyth-born fullback has been a fan favourite at his boyhood club since arriving from Brighton in January 2022. In a world in which fullbacks are often measured by their attacking output, the 6'5 tall Burn is something of an unorthodox figure in the modern game.

Having a fullback that cannot progress the ball has often left Newcastle hamstrung in attack. Playing opposite Kieran Trippier, who is arguably more comfortable attacking than defending, Burn leaves the Magpie's attack feeling a little uneven at times.

Whilst there is no denying Burn's defensive qualities, elite sides can no longer get by with fullbacks who are ineffective in the final third. Regardless of whether he's a regular starter or bit-part player, there is no doubt that Burn will continue to cement his legacy as a favourite at his boyhood club.

Rangers’ £4.3m gamble is already proving to be better than Raskin

Glasgow Rangers perhaps delivered their finest victory of the season over the weekend as they dismantled an in-form Hearts side who had taken 28 points across their previous ten matches.

Not only did the Light Blues register another confidence-boosting win, but they scored five against the Gorgie outfit without reply, and it piled the pressure on Celtic ahead of their clash against Motherwell on Sunday.

They ended up securing a late win, but the Parkhead side were far from their best and Rangers now have the momentum for the first time in a while.

Much has been said about the recruitment of both teams over the previous few years, but Philippe Clement’s three January signings all scored against Hearts and this injection of freshness might just prove to be the difference in the chase for the Premiership crown.

One incoming in particular has already made such a positive impact that there is no doubt he could become one of the finest players in the squad over the next few years; Mohamed Diomande.

How much Mohamed Diomande cost Rangers

Prior to Christmas, Clement had to endure an injury crisis that deep at the club that he was forced to play Dujon Sterling – a natural full-back – in the heart of the midfield in a major domestic cup final, and it gave him an idea of just how much the squad needed to be bolstered.

Having added Fabio Silva to his side in the winter window, it looked as though the Belgian manager was going to focus on further strengthening his attacking options, but he pulled off a major surprise with a move for Diomande.

The Ivorian midfielder had starred for Danish side FC Nordsjaelland during the first half of the 2023/24 campaign, ranking in the top five among his teammates for big chances created and interceptions per game in the Superliga, and it looked as though Clement had secured a talented young maestro.

The 22-year-old was signed on an initial loan deal with an obligation to buy for a fee in excess of £4.3m, and it looked like a wise move for the Gers.

"I am really pleased to have been able to add Mohamed to our squad, and I am excited to see what he can bring to our team," beamed Clement after the announcement that he had signed.

"In our conversations and what I have seen of him as a player, I believe he will be a real asset to us, not only in what remains of this season, but in the seasons to come also.”

Mohammed Diomande

After just five matches, this statement from the manager is already coming true.

Mohamed Diomande's season in numbers

The midfielder was given just 16 minutes of action in his first two league matches, but between those games, he started in the 2-0 Scottish Cup win over Ayr United at Ibrox and gave the supporters a demonstration of his talents.

This earned him a first Premiership start against St Johnstone last weekend, and he certainly delivered a wonderful display when it was needed most.

Against the Saints, he opened the scoring with a fantastic low drive just before the interval, along with making two key passes, succeeding with 100% of his dribble attempts and winning every single one of the ground duels he contested.

This showed that not only can he be a threat going forward, but he also won't be bullied off the ball easily and can chip in from a defensive viewpoint, which could be crucial in tight matches between now and the end of the season.

Diomande was given another start against Hearts on Saturday, and he scored his second goal in a week to open the scoring once again, and it set the tone for a dominant display from Rangers.

Furthermore, he also won all of his ground duels while completing 86% of his passes, and it was another solid showing from the new boy.

His performances may certainly keep Nicolas Raskin out of the team, but could he even be better than the Belgian gem?

How Diomande compares to Nicolas Raskin

Following the win over Hearts, Rangers Review journalist Chris Jack hailed the signing and said that the call from Clement has certainly “paid off so far” with regard to bringing him to Ibrox last month.

Raskin has plenty of talent, yet fitness has disrupted his campaign so far during 2023/24. He has missed 18 games due to a couple of injury problems and failed to really build any momentum.

Rangers midfielder Nicolas Raskin.

The midfielder has scored just one goal in 20 appearances, while Diomande has two in just five games, demonstrating his positive instant impact.

The Ivorian has also registered more key passes per game (1 vs 0.8) than Raskin and succeeded with more successful dribbles per game (0.8 vs 0.6), showing that he certainly possesses a greater attacking threat than his fellow teammate.

Clement needed a player to come in last month and make an immediate impact, and Diomande has done just that, which could be the boost the Gers need to get over the finishing line.

The onus is now on the manager and his side to continue winning and putting in solid performances to fend off Celtic, while also potentially going far in the Europa League, although this would be a bonus.

Signing Diomande for just over £4.3m is already beginning to look like a major steal and if he continues to maintain his impressive start to life at the club, then he will become one of the first names in the starting XI as the season reaches its crescendo.

Could he be the driving force which sees the Light Blues end a three-year wait for the league title? Only time will tell.

While manager Koeman downplayed De Ligt's errors, the 25-year-old was very critical of his actions.

    WHAT MATTHIJS DE LIGT SAID

The former Bayern Munich ace said after the game: "I think you know how I feel… we won… but then comes the individual part. I should have done better at their second goal, and I know that. I don't really know what happened. I should have cleared the ball but I kept having doubts during the play. It's just f****d."

  • THE BIGGER PICTURE

De Ligt swapped Bayern for United last month for a fee that could rise to £43 million ($56.4m) but performances like this for the Netherlands will not breed much confidence in him going forward. Manager Erik ten Hag will hope the defender can cut out those mistakes when he is playing for the Red Devils soon.

Choppy waters for Australia against smooth-sailing South Africa

Perry’s injury and the threat of rain both favour South Africa, though they have never beaten Australia in a Women’s T20 World Cup

The Preview by Daniel Brettig04-Mar-2020

Big Picture

Few teams have had more contrasting paths to the semi-finals than Australia and South Africa. The hosts have been a walking news cycle of dramas, unexpected twists and, in the case of Ellyse Perry’s hamstring injury, sporting tragedy, all while dealing with the enormous expectations of fulfilling their favourites tag and making it to the final on Sunday at the MCG. For South Africa it has been a far quieter, smoother path, winning three consecutive matches to breeze into the semi-finals then qualifying first in their group thanks to a washout. That same weather now offers South Africa one of two viable pathways to the tournament decider. As the higher ranked qualifying team, they will make the final if a match cannot be completed at the SCG on Thursday night, an irony that won’t be lost on members of the men’s South African side who were on the wrong side of a rain-shortened World Cup semi-final at the MCG in the 1992 ODI World Cup.Then again, they have the option of simply beating Meg Lanning’s team although this is a rather more complicated assignment for Dane van Niekerk’s side, given that they have never won a T20 World Cup match against Australia in four attempts. So while any team would prefer to win their way through to a tournament final by being victorious in a contest, the damage Australia did to themselves by starting the event with a loss to India, plus the vagaries of the World Cup’s rules around reserve days and the minimum overs required for a result are very much in South Africa’s favour.

In the spotlight

Throughout this tournament, Ash Gardner has struggled to impose herself while also looking capable of doing so at a key moment. Against India she was humbugged by the collapse of wickets all around her, and after falling early to the swinging ball in Perth, she made a couple of decent starts against Bangladesh and New Zealand. As critical as her ability to swing freely and powerfully for the fences will be an improvement in Gardner’s offspin bowling, which has looked eminently hittable thus far, and will likely be leaned on further in Perry’s absence.Arguably no individual innings of this World Cup has been better than Laura Wolvaardt‘s slamming 53 from 36 balls against Pakistan, not only as an example of finishing off an innings in resounding and match-winning style, but also as an example of a cricketer finding another level at precisely the right moment. A career strike rate of around a run a ball in T20Is did not suggest that Wolvaardt would have been capable of such a feat, but in doing so she added depth to South Africa’s lineup in a way that Australia have always considered a strength.

Team news

Lacking Perry’s all-round skills and middle-order presence, Australia can either choose an extra bowler, perhaps of the spin-bowling variety, or draft in the vastly experienced Delissa Kimmince who offers sturdy mediums and handy runs too.Australia (possible): 1 Beth Mooney, 2 Alyssa Healy (wk), 3 Meg Lanning (capt), 4 Ashleigh Gardner, 5 Rachael Haynes, 6 Annabel Sutherland, 7 Nicola Carey, 8 Delissa Kimmince, 9 Georgia Wareham, 10 Jess Jonassen 11 Megan SchuttHaving sailed much more comfortably into the semi-finals than Australia, it is hard to see South Africa looking past the XI that beat Pakistan comfortably in Sydney three days ago although they continue to monitor the health of Marizanne Kapp who has been struggling with a respiratory tract infection.South Africa (probable): 1 Lizelle Lee, 2 Dane van Niekerk (capt), 3 Marizanne Kapp, 4 Mignon du Preez, 5 Laura Wolvaardt, 6 Sune Luus, 7 Chloe Tryon, 8 Trisha Chetty (wk), 9 Shabnim Ismail, 10 Ayabonga Khaka, 11 Nonkululeko Mlaba

Pitch and conditions

Sydney’s surfaces typically offer more spin the longer a season goes on, but the amount of rain around the city this week may also bring some moisture and the odd tuft of live grass into play. The weather forecast is for some patches of fine weather amongst the showers, though it remains to be seen whether there will be enough for a game to be completed.

Stats and trivia

  • South Africa have never beaten Australia in four previous T20 World Cup meetings, starting in 2009
  • The SCG has previously hosted two women’s T20I matches, both won by Australia, in 2009 against New Zealand and in 2016 against India
  • Not since the first women’s T20 World Cup in England in 2009 has the host nation reached the final

"Exceptional" player "ready to quit" Arsenal after Mikel Arteta treatment

In his first summer transfer window as the Arsenal boss, Mikel Arteta offloaded Emiliano Martinez to Aston Villa despite the Argentine's role in the Gunners' FA Cup triumph. Bernd Leno was back from injury, and Arteta indicated that he would stand by the German and relegate Martinez back to a number two role. That didn't satisfy, and he was given the chance to go and properly launch his career elsewhere.

Just a year on, though, Arteta was looking to move on from Leno and recruited Aaron Ramsdale from Sheffield United, paying up to £30m for the privilege. Leno started the first three games of that season but Ramsdale replaced him after the first international break and would hold down the spot for the next two seasons.

£60m defender ready to seriously consider move to Arsenal

But history has since repeated itself at the Emirates Stadium. Late in the summer transfer window, Arsenal signed David Raya from Brentford on an initial loan deal with an option to buy that is expected to be activated. Within five games of the season starting, Raya had taken over between the sticks, and Ramsdale has only started one top-flight match since – the visit to his team-mate's parent club Brentford. Aside from that, he's been limited to outings in the domestic cups and an appearance in a Champions League dead-rubber against PSV.

Ramsdale wants out of Arsenal

Predictably, this has left Ramsdale unhappy. According to journalist Graeme Bailey, he's "ready to quit" Arsenal this summer because he has "no intention" of "sitting behind David Raya" for another season.

cody-gakpo-aaron-ramsdale-liverpool-opinion

Ramsdale was initially led to believe that he could fight to win back his place, but in an article for HITC Football, Bailey reports that "he realised he was fighting a losing battle". The Englishman is now expected to seek a move away from North London this summer, which could force Arsenal into the market to recruit another new deputy.

"Exceptional" Ramsdale simply must move on

Very few would have predicted this turn of events on the back of last season, with Ramsdale earning a spot in the PFA Team of the Year after helping Arsenal finish as runner-up behind Manchester City. Arteta regards him as an "exceptional" keeper, but clearly he has more faith in Raya.

As much as Arsenal would ideally like to keep a player of this calibre around as a luxury back-up, it simply isn't realistic. Ramsdale knows he's good enough to be starting elsewhere in the Premier League, and the club hierarchy may not want Arteta to simply sit on a big pot of money.

Indeed, it's previously been suggested that Arsenal value the 25-year-old at £50m, and while they may struggle to get quite that much for a player who's spent much of the season on the bench, it should be a lucrative deal nonetheless, with PIF-backed Newcastle United already considering a move.

Babar Azam, Mohammad Hafeez hit half-centuries as Pakistan canter to series win

Tamim Iqbal’s lone hand goes in vain as the Bangladesh batsmen put up another ordinary performance

The Report by Danyal Rasool25-Jan-2020It might not matter this sort of game is worlds removed from anything Pakistan will have thrown at them in the upcoming T20 World. The conditions will be different, the pressure higher, the tension sharper. They will be content to draw comfort from snapping back into the team who put these performances series in, series out for the best part of the last three years, and hope this represents a return to that form. For today, just as it was yesterday, an unchanged Pakistan kept Bangladesh on a leash right throughout the first innings, the below-par 136 the visitors cobbled together never once looking like it might be enough. And while Ahsan Ali did fell early – he has time to add consistency and match-awareness to his game – Pakistan knew exactly what to do next. Babar Azam and Mohammad Hafeez combined for an unbroken 131-run partnership that took them through to the finish with 20 balls to spare. Hafeez registered a half-century that should do his chances of attaining an extended run in the T20I side no harm, while Babar Azam bounced back from a duck in the first game to finish unbeaten on 66.Tamim’s lone handBatting first on a greener wicket as compared to Friday’s, Tamim Iqbal’s lone hand of resistance was the only thing holding Bangladesh’s innings together. Shaheen Afridi ensured there would be no repeat of a stand between the openers, snaring Mohammad Naim for a first-ball duck. Mahedi Hasan, coming into the side off the back of a stellar BPL, nicked off to Mohammad Hasnain soon after, while Shadab Khan got a slightly fortuitous lbw to remove Liton Das that withstood a review from the batsman.Tamim, meanwhile, was batting on a slightly different surface, the kind the groundstaff hoped they had produced. Without ever really upping the scoring rate, he never once appeared threatened by Pakistan’s bowling attack in the manner his team-mates were. Even the acceleration at the end was instigated by the opener when he brought up his fifty by tonking Shadab to deep cover before crunching two more fours in the over as Bangladesh made a late surge. He was tiring as a direct hit sent him back in the 18th over before Haris Rauf, who put in another audition as perhaps Pakistan’s most consistently quick limited-overs bowler, removed captain Mahmudullah in the final over. The partnershipBangladesh might have hoped to make it scrappy once more when a struggling Ahsan failed to get off the mark off his first six balls. The lack of experience showed as he lashed out on the seventh, only succeeding in skying it to mid-off. With just six runs scored off ten balls at that point, it appeared Pakistan would be made to work hard for their win once more. However, it didn’t work out that way. Most importantly, because Babar was still around to anchor the chase, and even as Hafeez took his time settling in, Babar kept the scoreboard ticking over regularly from the other end, removing any pressure the 39-year-old might have felt. When Hafeez did come into his own, Babar was content to pass the strike over to him. In the end, it was the veteran who brought up his half-century first, and finished as the top-scorer with an unbeaten 67.Pakistan’s bowlingAmid the flair of the chase and the ordinariness of Bangladesh’s performance, it may be easy to lose sight of what set up the win in the first place. Pakistan chose to stick with the bowling attack that had brought dividends in the first game, and the wicket off Shaheen’s second ball suggested they were up for the fight once more. The biggest positive will be Hasnain’s vastly improved performance – his lack of control on Friday was one of the few blots on an otherwise spotless bowling effort – will please Waqar Younis, the bowling coach, plenty. He ended up being the pick of the lot, accounting for Mahedi and Afif Hossain, to finish with figures of 4-0-20-2.
