Corberan axes Grant in 3 changes: Predicted West Brom lineup vs Boro

da mrbet: West Bromwich Albion will be glad that tonight’s encounter against Middlesbrough is happening this mid-week, seeing it as a perfect opportunity to bounce back straight after Saturday’s humbling Championship defeat away at Sheffield Wednesday.

da dobrowin: That was the first time Carlos Corberan’s Baggies had tasted the bitterness of a defeat in the second tier this season, as the usually dogged and staunch West Brom defence was regularly opened up by Danny Rohl’s men, leading to a shock 3-2 win in favour of the hosts.

Corberan would have been enraged with his side at the final whistle, which could lead to a number of changes taking place for tonight’s tricky showdown with Michael Carrick’s Boro, who are fresh off a 2-0 victory themselves against Stoke City.

Even still, the Hawthorns has been a fortress for West Brom so far this campaign, with zero goals conceded and zero losses registered from three games so far, which will give the West Midlands side an advantage after their confidence was dented in South Yorkshire.

Regardless of West Brom feeling more confident in front of their own masses, some changes could still take place, with Karlan Grant one figure who might be axed…

1 GK – Alex Palmer

West Brom’s usual number one in-between the sticks had a match to forget against Sheffield Wednesday, having to fish three strikes out of his net, but Alex Palmer is unlikely to be sacrificed for a different option tonight against Boro.

The 28-year-old has only conceded five goals all campaign, away from that rare off-day at Hillsborough, with three clean sheets picked up this season on his own patch.

2 RB – Darnell Furlong

Darnell Furlong didn’t cover himself in immense glory either away at the Owls, as his own goal in the first 45 minutes against Rohl’s buoyed-on hosts gifted Wednesday an early two-goal advantage.

Still, much like Palmer, Furlong hasn’t become a bad player overnight and is likely to be retained, having helped his side pick up a clean sheet and a win last match at the Hawthorns in a hard-fought 1-0 win over Plymouth Argyle.

3 CB – Kyle Bartley

Kyle Bartley will also likely remain in the heart of defence for tonight’s game back on home soil, having been everpresent under Corberan this season so far in the second tier.

That’s for good reason too, with Bartley standing out even in the 3-2 loss, with five clearances registered alongside successfully winning eight duels.

4 CB – Semi Ajayi

West Brom defender Semi Ajayi.

Semi Ajayi has been Bartley’s main partner in the centre-back spots this season, owing to the departure of Cedric Kipre, but also down to the fact the ex-Rotherham United man has been solid alongside his experienced teammate.

The Nigerian defender is confident playing out from the back, with 48 accurate passes averaged per Championship clash this campaign, whilst also winning 3.9 total duels on average to try and keep opposition attackers at bay.

5 LB – Torbjørn Heggem

Whilst Ajayi stepping up to the mark has made Kipre’s absence feel less noticeable, Torbjørn Heggem has struggled at points in the left-back spot, performing in the arguable shadow of the now departed Conor Townsend.

The 25-year-old full-back did look out of his depth at points away at Wednesday, with just one weak tackle registered, but he has shown signs of his promise down the left in other games away from this disappointing defeat.

In the 1-0 home win over Plymouth, the Nordic defender would only misplace two of his 34 passes, whilst also shining when rolling up his sleeves with three tackles won on top of four successful duels.

6 CDM – Jayson Molumby

Jayson Molumby has been out of the main XI recently due to injury setbacks, but could be thrust back into the lineup for today’s game at the expense of new recruit Uros Racic.

Racic struggled in South Yorkshire, with just 18 accurate passes registered before leaving the field of play, after playing a key role in West Brom beating Plymouth the match before by assisting an on-fire Josh Maja.

It could well be time for West Brom’s number eight to come back into the main team, therefore, if he can pass a late fitness test.

7 CDM – Alex Mowatt

The second change to the XI that lost at Wednesday feels like an obvious tweak, with Alex Mowatt dropped back into the first-team fold, after being demoted to the substitutes bench away at Wednesday owing to his own slight injury concern.

Corberan must have been cursing that decision – regardless of the condition of his star midfielder – with the former Leeds United man managing to get his team back on level terms at 2-2 after a top second half showing.

Ousmane Diakite will be the casualty here, who was hauled off at half-time at Hillsborough for Mowatt to then work his magic.

8 RM – Tom Fellows

Tom Fellows will retain his spot, despite all the changes in the holding midfield positions, with the homegrown Baggies product bright in spurts at Wednesday.

Despite only managing a poor 28 touches of the ball, Fellows would assist Maja’s header that gave the away side a way back into the contest, whilst also registering three efforts of his own on James Beadle’s goal.

9 CAM – John Swift

John Swift was also a nuisance for the Owls defence to contain, with most attacking moves on the day from the Baggies going through the ex-Reading man.

The 29-year-old attacking midfielder – who could have walked away from the West Midlands outfit this summer to their mid-week opponents – amassed a ridiculous 105 touches of the ball at Hillsborough, with four key passes also registered to try and unlock a tetchy Wednesday back four.

Also winning eight duels, Corberan will hope Swift can be instrumental in his side bouncing back with a win tonight over a tricky Boro team.

10 LM – Mikey Johnston

The third and final change to the XI that struggled away at Wednesday could see Mikey Johnston get his first start back at the promotion chasers, with an underperforming Karlan Grant dropped.

Johnston would fire home an mightily impressive seven goals last campaign when on loan at Corberan’s men – with his manager even labelling him as “special” in the process – and will be raring to reach those heights again, but is currently being kept out of the side by the former Huddersfield Town attacker.

His display against the Owls suggests a change could be required, with Grant only managing 19 touches of the ball on a quiet day at the office for the 27-year-old.

Durham have signed Ollie Robinson, the Kent wicketkeeper-batter, on loan for the T20 Blast to help manage an availability crisis.Robinson, 23, played four T20 games for Kent in their title-winning 2021 season and made 103 runs with a strike rate of 139.18 across his four innings but was deemed surplus to requirement for the start of their Blast season, following Sam Billings’ return from the IPL.He is available for Durham in their first T20 fixture on Thursday, against Leicestershire at Grace Road but will return to Kent for their two Championship games during the Blast’s group stages and can be recalled at any time.Related

Durham were without Sean Dickson (hamstring) and David Bedingham (back) during their Championship defeat against Middlesex at Lord’s last week and have lost three players to England’s squad for the first two Tests against New Zealand in Alex Lees, Ben Stokes and Matthew Potts.”Following a few injuries and England selection affecting our squad, we are excited to have Ollie for our Vitality Blast campaign,” Marcus North, Durham’s director of cricket, said. “He is an exciting young talent who will offer us multiple skill options.””Ollie is a really talented young player and both he and Kent will benefit from ‘Robbo’ experiencing increased playing time during the Vitality Blast,” Paul Downton, Kent’s director of cricket, added. “We wish him well at Durham and look forward to welcoming him back into the squad for our next Championship fixture.”Durham finished seventh out of nine in the North Group of the Blast in 2021. They have recruited Ashton Turner, who has been warming up by playing for their second XI, as captain for 2022.Elsewhere, Northamptonshire will use Matthew Kelly – the Australian seam-bowling allrounder who initially signed for the early stages of the County Championship season – as cover for Jimmy Neesham in their opening Blast fixtures due to Neesham’s IPL commitments, while Leicestershire have confirmed that Hamish Rutherford will replace Rahmanullah Gurbaz, as revealed by ESPNcricinfo.

Gutsy Jonny Bairstow century puts England back in the game

Batter shares fifty stands with Stokes, Foakes and Woakes to rebuild tourists’ innings from dire start

Jonny Bairstow started his day as the glue holding England together and he ended it with an unbeaten century that put his side firmly back in the game against West Indies in Antigua. If England’s hierarchy were to make an appraisal of their so-called red-ball reset before lunch, the result would have been an epic fail. Any review will of course come much later – and rightly so – but, given the criticism of the selection decisions taken in the aftermath of a dire Ashes drubbing, they could have done with a fresher start. Instead, it was a case of the more things change, the more things stay the same early on.Bairstow, whose retention was among their least contentious calls after he was England’s only centurion of that fateful campaign in Australia and scorer of a hundred in the warm-up fixture for this match, came in with the tourists teetering on 48 for 4 inside the first hour and a half. But he combined with fellow experienced hand Ben Stokes for a rebuilding partnership worth 67 for the fifth wicket and then put on 99 runs with old new kid Ben Foakes to raise England to a respectable score at stumps.Foakes’ recall as wicketkeeper-batter in place of Jos Buttler perhaps only raised eyebrows in that it had taken so long and after Andrew Strauss’s edict as interim managing director that he “get a decent run of things” he could afford to feel as comfortable as he looked through much of his innings. Having been in and out of the Test side sporadically since 2018, Foakes was among those given an opportunity on this tour to cement his place in the long term.He looked in fine touch from the off. He edged the second ball he faced through the slips for four but followed that with two more authoritative drives to the boundary in the same Kemar Roach over as he set out at better than a run-a-ball. Foakes struck five more fours before he was pinned back by a Jason Holder delivery that struck the knee roll in line with leg stump, his review turned down. But the day belonged to Bairstow, who crafted a gritty and intelligent innings on a dry, slow pitch that offered little to either side. He faced 127 balls for a well-earned fifty, brought up with a four off Veerasammy Permaul as he continued to deploy the cut to great effect any time there was width on offer. But he upped the tempo after that, scoring his next 50 off just 63 balls, raising his hundred by sweeping Kraigg Brathwaite to the boundary and celebrating with an elated roar and punch of the air. With the ball swinging in the morning session, Roach had bowled beautifully to claim two wickets, while Jayden Seales and Holder took one each – the latter without conceding a run from his five overs. Holder finally gave up a run, two in fact, off his 33rd ball to a Bairstow cut.Having won the toss, England captain Joe Root opted to bat first. Debutant opener Alex Lees scored off the fifth ball he faced, threading Roach through backward point for four. He only survived another three balls though, before he was rapped on the front knee roll by a full, straight Roach delivery which narrowly evaded the bat and struck in line with middle and off and, despite a hopeful review, Lees was sent on his way with just those four runs to his name.Zak Crawley had looked in decent form, driving Seales to the boundary twice in three balls. But then Joshua Da Silva took a stunner – diving low to his left as Crawley sent an inside edge off Seales that slipped past off stump into the keeper’s outstretched glove – and all of a sudden, England were 17 for 2 with barely 20 minutes gone.In ever-familiar territory with an innings resurrection riding on Root’s shoulders – this time at No. 3 in England’s revamped line-up – it was almost 23 for 3 when Root, on 9, slashed at a rising Roach delivery which then sailed through the fingers of Jermaine Blackwood at third slip. As the ball raced to the boundary, both sides were left to ponder the potential significance of the moment.Roach ensured it was a moot point, probably to Blackwood’s relief, as Root left the very next ball, a pinpoint in-ducker that clipped the top of off stump and England were, in fact, 27 for 3 and in a bad place.Dan Lawrence was reprieved when Blackwood missed a tough chance off Roach in the cordon again. But Blackwood eventually clung on to dismiss Lawrence, who reached for a Holder outswinger and sent a thick outside edge to second slip.Stokes and Bairstow ground through the second hour of the session, adding nine runs in 8.2 overs before lunch. After the break, Holder failed to react at second slip as Stokes, on 22, toe-ended Joseph very clearly in his direction, and Seales saw an edge off Stokes drop just short of John Campbell at slip immediately before conceding back-to-back fours in an eventful 40th over. Seales produced the perfect riposte on the last ball, a fuller-length delivery that swung in late to defeat Stokes’ attempted drive via an inside edge on to leg stump. After Foakes’ dismissal, Chris Woakes arrived to round out the ‘Stokes, Foakes, Woakes’ cult theme of the day and he shared an unbroken 54-run partnership with Bairstow, who ended the day 109 not out, to see England through without further loss.

Rory Burns seals Surrey's glory in Championship-sealing romp at Micky Stewart Oval

Yorkshire overwhelmed by ten wickets as rivals claim 21st county title

Surrey County Cricket Club, County Champions once more. A second title in four years, a fourth in the 2000s, a 21st in their long and storied history, was claimed in emphatic fashion with victory over Yorkshire by ten wickets. This eighth victory out of 13 in the 2022 season was in parts a microcosm of their overall campaign: everyone pulling their weight with runs and wickets shared around, and the odd sizeable contribution from the likes of Ollie Pope with 136, and Tom Lawes and Dan Worrall, who led the way with four wickets in the first and second innings respectively.Victory by an innings looked on the cards when Yorkshire resumed day three on 89 for two in their follow-on innings, but the wait for victory, confirmed at 2.35pm, only served to underline the professional nature of an outfit who, in a schedule like no other, have called on 22 players this season without looking poorer for it. For a head coach in his maiden season, Gareth Batty deserves immense credit for ensuring all were able to fit in and excel without losing their sense of selves.Winning titles at home is always preferable, though doing so a round early – with a day to spare – meant the Division One trophy was still locked away at Lord’s. It will be back in their possession at the end of their final fixture against Lancashire up at Emirates Old Trafford, and will be presented by their former chair Richard Thompson, no less, in his new role at the ECB.That game may no longer have any consequence, but don’t call it a dead rubber. Surrey still have an unbeaten record to preserve.Yet, as odd as it may sound, no one seemed to miss the golden goblet here. This last home game of the summer was already a week of celebration. The ground was renamed The Micky Stewart Oval to honour the legend following his 90th birthday, and he was awarded the keys to the ground at tea on day two. During the innings break, before the winning runs were sought, news of Hampshire’s 77-run defeat to Kent filtered through to draw more through the gates, some of whom only arrived after Burns, fittingly, had smashed the final runs through midwicket to end the chase in 16 minutes and leave him with a rather spectacular 30 not out off 16. Why the rush, Rory? “I was getting thirsty,” he joked.By 2.49pm, Surrey players and coaching staff had re-emerged onto the ground, beers in hand, to salute the crowd. There’s a small matter of the team’s end-of-season dinner tonight, too. Trophy or not, they’ll be just fine.Jordan Clark was a key contributor to Surrey’s title•Getty Images for Surrey CCC

This was always going to be more Surrey’s day than Yorkshire’s as the latter returned in their second innings on 89 for two, still trailing by 65. Quite how emphatically so was dependent on the goings-on at The Ageas Bowl, where second-place Hampshire, already four-down in their chase, had 269 remaining to secure an unlikely win over Kent. Nevertheless, the best of starts came here when a clerical bowling change brought the first of the final eight wickets needed.Cameron Steel opened proceedings from the Vauxhall End in order to switch Worrall to the Pavilion End after the seamer had bowled the final over of day two. Steel’s final delivery – a googly – snuck through Tom Kohler-Cadmore’s gate, just as it did for Ben Mike’s in the first innings. The only difference was the lack of bounce which drastically reduced Kohler-Cadmore’s chances of keeping it out. With that we returned to the usual opening duo of Kemar Roach and Worrall, and the former should have had Adam Lyth for 37 only for Ryan Patel to fail to scoop up a low chance diving to his right from third slip. Roach channeled his anger to maintain a probing line to the left-hander and, 36 deliveries later, removed him with arguably the best ball of the morning: forcing the left-hander to play in front of middle-and-leg, then nipping the ball off the seam to give Patel a far simpler chance with which to make amends. It was the second breakthrough in three balls, after Clark finished the over before by removing Will Fraine with a bit of extra lift that surprised the right-hander into playing onto his own stumps. With that, Clark’s season tally moved to 30 which, along with his 467 runs at 51.88, underlines how invaluable he has been to the balance of this XI since his arrival from Lancashire in 2018. Fittingly, he was awarded his county cap at the lunch interval.Clark might have ticked over to 31 by then. With Yorkshire trailing by 30, skipper Jonny Tattersall, top-scorer in the first innings with an unbeaten 45, was put down on three off Clark. Again, Patel was the slip fielder though the legitimacy of the catch would have probably been called into question given how low it arrived.Tattersall went on to a dogged 21 but had the misfortune of being caught down the leg side off a delivery from Jamie Overton that looked like being too wide for any trouble. He’d at least got his team within four runs of Surrey’s total, a deficit which was wiped with singles before Jordan Thompson square-drove Overton gloriously through backward point to put Yorkshire four ahead. That lead was 17 (for six) by the end of the first session, at which point the more cynical sorts began fearing a tricky fourth-innings chase, even as an eighth-wicket stand of 63 between James Vince and James Fuller began to chip away at the 169 still needed for victory further down south. Two overs after the restart, Thompson had a bruise and a new helmet after Overton cranked one up from the Pavilion End to strike him on the grille via his right forearm. And, to add insult to injury, he was off four deliveries later when one from Worrall kept low to pin him on the shin in front of off stump. At the same time, Vince holed out to deep midwicket for 73. With that, those in the stands could refocus their attention on what was in front of them.A brisk 22 from five overs was nipped in the bud when Dom Bess was caught down the leg side off Roach for a diligent 43, before Mike’s brisk 14 was ended by a nip-backer from Worrall with the lead at 52. And when Worrall bowled the ever-retreating Ben Coad to give himself four for 61, Surrey’s task was simple – 55 for the win. And then, when Kent took the last Hampshire wicket to confirm a 77-run win during the innings break, confirmation this 55 would be for the Championship. The first over brought 16 of them: Burns guiding two fours to third man between second and third slip, before an imperious clip off the hips through square leg. A botched charge led to four byes in between. A carnival atmosphere ensued in south London.Among the cheers for boundaries was the odd chuckle, notably when Tattersall, having given up keeping duties to Kohler-Cadmore, started with a head-high full toss that Patel trimmed for four of his own (six with the no-ball). A heartier whoop followed when Burns pulled out a perfect reverse sweep for boundary No.5, before the sixth confirmed the inevitable.

Sri Lanka have called up spinners Maheesh Theekshana, Dunith Wellalage and Lakshitha Manasinghe for the second Test against Australia in Galle. On Wednesday, two days before the second Test, the team also confirmed that Prabath Jayasuriya, another left-arm spinner, had also been added to the squad. All four of the new additions are uncapped at Test level and at least one is set to play on Friday after Lasith Embuldeniya was dropped from the squad and fellow left-arm spinner Praveen Jayawickrama was ruled out with Covid-19.The 19-year-old Wellalage, who is also a left-arm spinner, was the leading wicket-taker in the ODI series with nine at 22.33 and could also add depth to Sri Lanka’s batting order if he debuts. He was one of the travelling reserves with the squad for the first Test but has now been elevated to the main group. In 11 first-class matches, Wellalage has 34 wickets at 30.76.Although right-arm fingerspinner Theekshana only claimed four wickets in the five ODIs, he caused Australia problems during the white-ball leg of the tour. However, he has played just three first-class matches, the last of which was in 2018, having been viewed as a limited-overs specialist.Related

Offspinner Manasinghe, 22, played in the four-day series against Australia A last month where he collected 13 wickets across the two matches in Hambantota.Jayasuriya, aged 30, is a tall left-arm spinner that had been on the national side’s radar for a while, and in fact had played two ODIs in 2018. He did not play in the recent A team matches against Australia A, but is nevertheless an experienced first-class operator. He has 234 first-class wickets at 25.61, across 62 games.Embuldeniya’s omission comes after he had a poor opening game, conceded 73 runs off 15 wicketless overs, and follows being dropped on the recent tour of Bangladesh when he struggled in the first Test.”He’s finding it tough at the moment,” head coach Chris Silverwood said after the first Test in Galle. “He’s getting a lot of support in the dressing room because he’s a great lad. We’ve got to work on him holding a consistent length.”It’s not just him not holding a consistent length. As a group we need to do that better. You look at the various pace the bowlers bowl at as well. There’s a few factors there, one of which is confidence. We’ve got to give him support and get him back to where we know he can be.”Ramesh Mendis was the pick of Sri Lanka’s spinners in the first Test, taking 4 for 112, but even he struggled to control the scoring rate as Australia rattled along at 4.53 runs per over.Meanwhile, Angelo Mathews will complete his isolation period on Tuesday after he tested positive for Covid-19 on the third day of the first Test and should be available for selection.

Will Jacks spearheads Surrey recovery with remarkable 150 not out

His eight sixes help hosts from 112 for 7 to 319 all out in reply to Essex’s first-innings 271

Will Jacks scored a remarkable 150 not out•Getty Images

Will Jacks hit eight sixes in a remarkable 150 not out against Essex to spearhead a stunning Surrey recovery on day two of a so far memorable LV= Insurance County Championship match at the Kia Oval.Jacks, 23, batted with a maturity beyond his years to turn a superb contest on its head as Division One leaders Surrey – 112 for 7 at one stage – reached 319 all out in reply to Essex’s first innings 271.In six overs’ batting before the close, Essex then lost Alastair Cook and Sam Cook, both for 4, while staggering to 19 for 2 – a deficit still of 29 runs. Dan Worrall, fresh from his first innings 6 for 56, had former England opener Cook caught at the wicket from a ball angled across him and nightwatchman Cook well held at second slip.Jacks’ spectacular late onslaught will be long remembered at the Oval and included leg spinner Matt Critchley being plundered for 26 in an over and off spinner Simon Harmer 23 more from another. Jacks, having got to three figures, scored his third fifty from just 17 balls with six sixes and three fours.Coming in at 88 for 4, he took 105 balls for his half-century and 167 balls to reach his third first-class hundred, but this was clearly the best and most eye-catching innings of his burgeoning career. In all Jacks batted for more than four hours, facing 184 balls and hitting 10 fours besides those eight sixes. But Surrey’s dramatic rally, and Jacks’ tour de force, also owed much to the resilience of the tail, with Tom Lawes, Kemar Roach and last man Worrall featuring in stands of 55, 85 and 67 for the eighth, ninth and tenth wickets.Roach, in particular, batted with the assurance of a top-order player for his 29 from 92 balls, also negotiating the second new ball with aplomb until he was bowled by a lovely looping off break from Harmer as he pushed defensively forward.Fast-medium bowler Shane Snater was the pick of Essex’s bowlers with 3 for 35 from 21 overs. He even had figures of 3 for 8 from his first 12 overs, with seven maidens in his first eight overs, and the Essex attack initially combined superbly to put the squeeze on Surrey. But that was before Jacks, aided by his tailend partners, first guided Surrey towards parity with measured batting and then, once Roach was dismissed, accelerated to go first from 84 to 96 with two legside sixes in three balls off Harmer. Then came six more sixes, three each off Harmer and Critchley from a collection of slog-sweeps, pulls and effortlessly struck shots down the ground that fully showcased Jacks’ power. It was all so different from the day’s earlier events. Resuming on 24 for 1, Surrey first lost their captain Rory Burns for 24 in the second full over of the morning, leg before trying to whip to mid wicket a ball from Cook, who was bowling around the wicket to the left-hander.Hashim Amla, beaten twice by Snater but having batted carefully to reach 12, then mishit a pull at Jamie Porter’s medium pace and saw Nick Browne hang on to a diving catch at mid wicket at the second attempt.Ollie Pope, who hooked Cook for six but was dropped at second slip off Porter on 23, had only gone on to 26 when he lobbed a checked drive at Snater to mid off, where Tom Westley dived forward to take the catch. And, after lunch, Surrey’s top order continued to find ways to get out against Essex’s disciplined bowling when Ben Foakes (11) limply cut the first ball he faced after the interval, a short one from Snater, straight to cover point. That left Surrey 95 for 5, and it soon got worse for the home side as Cameron Steel, his feet anchored to the crease, was beaten and bowled off stump for 5 by a fine ball from Snater. Then, aiming an expansive smear through extra cover, Jamie Overton – also on 5 – was undone by a cleverly-flighted off break from Harmer which turned through the gaping gate to hit his stumps.Jacks, in what proved to be the day’s pivotal moment, had already been dropped low down by Alastair Cook at first slip on 9 off the metronomic Snater, but was clearly determined to make the most of his escape and not give his wicket away and, first with Lawes, he began to rebuild the innings from the depths of 112 for 7.Lawes, the 19-year-old all-rounder, impressed with fours on driven off Sam Cook, cut fine off Critchley and slog-swept off Harmer, but after reaching 19, he was distraught to loft a drive at Critchley straight to extra cover. Roach, however, dug in alongside Jacks and a wonderful day’s cricket, eventually, belonged to Surrey.

Northern Diamonds 215 for 9 (Winfield-Hill 65, Heath 44, Adams 3-34) beat Southern Vipers 213 for 9 (Adams 70, Bouchier 48) by two runsLauren Winfield-Hill and Linsey Smith made it third time lucky for Northern Diamonds as they finally beat Southern Vipers by two runs in a thriller at Lord’s to get their hands on the Rachael Heyhoe Flint Trophy.Diamonds had come up short against Vipers in the two previous finals, but Winfield-Hill hit 65 and Smith 27 in an opening stand of 83 to form the basis of their total of 215 for 9, Bess Heath later adding 44 while Georgia Adams returned figures of three for 34 and Paige Scholfield two for 36.Adams then made 70 with the bat, while Maia Bouchier weighed in with a spectacular 48, but the spin wizardry of Smith (two for 24) and three victims behind the stumps for Winfield-Hill saw Vipers come up just short in a breathless finish. The day also saw Charlie Dean playfully pretend to run Smith out at the non-striker’s end during the Diamonds innings, evoking thoughts of her run-out by that means at the hands of India’s Deepti Sharma in the ODI 24 hours earlier.Winfield-Hill, the tournament’s leading run-scorer, towered over the opening stages of the final. The England international drove the ball exquisitely, mainly through the off-side, one back-foot punch through cover a thing of beauty.Fellow opener Smith should have been stumped by Chloe Hill after dancing the pitch to Charlotte Taylor, but the chance went begging. Taylor though would soon extract revenge, Smith chipping one back to the spinner.Winfield-Hill pressed on to an elegant 50 with seven fours, but Hollie Armitage, like Smith, struggled to time the ball. Nevertheless, the score reached 114 for 1 before Armitage took an ugly swipe at Scholfield and was bowled.A dramatic collapse was triggered as Sterre Kalis fell first ball, Scholfield finding movement off the pitch to take the ball between bat and pad and uproot the off-stump once more. Phoebe Turner survived the hat-trick ball only to miss a straight one from Taylor in the following over and disaster followed as Winfield-Hill’s serene innings ended on 65, run out by Georgia Elwiss’ return from cover. Four wickets had fallen for five runs in 17 balls and Diamonds were teetering on the brink.Heath and Leah Dobson stopped the bleeding, slowly at first before acceleration came late in a stand of 85. Heath struck Georgia Adams for three boundaries in quick succession before becoming the first of a trio of late wickets for the Vipers’ skipper, two coming off successive balls in the final over.Chasing 216, Vipers lost Ella McCaughan to the miserly Smith and Elwiss was castled by a huge in-swinger from Lizzie Scott.Bouchier led the fightback, hitting first Katy Levick back over her head for four before taking heavy toll of the spin of Leigh Kasperek as a 50 partnership with Adams rattled up in a hurry.Diamonds needed inspiration but instead got a large slice of luck when Bouchier belted an Armitage full toss straight to Smith at cover. That brought Windsor to the crease, who signalled her intent with a dreamy cover-drive for four, but Armitage would account for her too as she nicked one through to Winfield-Hill.Dean though picked up where she left off with England 24 hours earlier as 13 came from Armitage’s penultimate over and the pendulum appeared to swing back towards Vipers once again. She was given a life on 26 in Armitage’s next over when Levick grassed the chance at point. Fortunately, it wasn’t costly as she would clout a Kaseperek long-hop down the throat of short mid-wicket with 53 still needed.Adams remained having gone almost unnoticed to 50 with only one four, but when she was stumped by Winfield-Hill from the bowling of Levick 20 were needed from the final two overs.Smith bowled Scholfield amid rising tension and 13 from the final over proved just too many.

Newcastle have already sold an "outstanding" Longstaff upgrade

da bet nacional: Newcastle United boast some talented midfielders in their current squad who have cost them a fair amount of money over the past few years.

da dobrowin: One of those players was not even signed as a midfielder but has since been converted by manager Eddie Howe. That man is Joelinton, who joined as a centre-forward for a then club-record £40m back in 2019.

Bruno Guimaraes is another the Magpies boast in the middle of the park. Now the club captain, he also cost them £40m including add-ons in January 2022 from Lyon. Sandro Tonali was another expensive buy, setting them back £55m from AC Milan in 2023.

Eddie Howe and Bruno Guimaraes celebrate

There is another player, a homegrown star, who has become a trusting figure in midfield for Howe over the years. That man is Sean Longstaff.

Longstaff’s Newcastle career

27-year-old academy graduate Longstaff has become an important player for Howe in the midfield. He has racked up an impressive number of games for the Magpies, featuring 194 times for the club, scoring 16 times and grabbing ten assists.

Sean Longstaff

The man currently in the dugout has been an influential figure in Longstaff’s career so far. Under the Newcastle boss, he has played 114 times finding the back of the net 11 times, registering seven assists. Last term in the Premier League, Longstaff was particularly efficient, contributing to eight goals, his best season yet.

Stats from Transfermarkt.

Even now, amongst all this impressive talent in the midfield at St James’ Park, the Newcastle-born star is able to get minutes. He has started five times in the top flight, playing 422 minutes and nine games in total.

He was impressive in the Magpies’ superb 1-0 win at home against Arsenal. The North East outfit got over the line with an Alexander Isak goal. Longstaff worked incredibly hard in midfield to win seven out of ten ground duels and six from seven tackles, as per Sofascore.

There is no question that the Newcastle number 36 gives 100% every week for his boyhood club. With that being said, there is another homegrown midfielder who left over the summer, someone who could have ended up going on to be better than Longstaff.

The midfielder Newcastle sold

The player in question here is Nottingham Forest midfielder Elliot Anderson. Like Longstaff, the 21-year-old also came through the academy at St James’ Park, although left the club for £35m in the summer to avoid breaching the Premier League’s Profitability and Sustainability Rules.

Elliot Anderson for Newcastle

He featured 55 times for his boyhood club, and his last two seasons at the club saw him become a more prominent player. Last term, Anderson played 21 times in the Premier League but did miss a large chunk of the season due to injury.

Since his big-money departure to the City Ground over the summer, the midfielder has thrived. Under the tutelage of Nuno Espirito Santo, the Forest number eight has played 10 games in the Premier League.

Impressively, he has three assists to his name so far, with two of those coming in the last two games, including a 3-1 win in the East Midlands derby against Leicester City.

Howe was full of praise for his former midfielder earlier in the season before Newcastle’s meeting with Forest in the Carabao Cup second round. He described the Magpies academy graduate as an “outstanding” footballer, praising the “versatility” he can offer.

Although it seemed like they had to sell Anderson to comply with Premier League rules, the Magpies may well regret moving the midfielder on. The Forest midfielder could certainly have replaced Longstaff in the middle of the park, given his versatility and quality that Howe clearly appreciates.

He has made impressive progress for the Midlands club already, and it could be a sale that, in the coming years, the Magpies look back on and wish they had never made.

Mohammad Hasnain cleared to bowl internationally again

Mohammad Hasnain has sent down 5000 balls and practised shadow bowling in a bid to remodel his action•PCB

Mohammad Hasnain has been cleared to bowl internationally again. The verdict was based on an assessment of his action, where he bowled three overs under supervision, and it was revealed that his elbow extension has dropped within the permissible limit – it has come down from the earlier flex of 17-24 degrees to 12-13 degrees.Hasnain, reported for a faulty action in January this year during the BBL, where he represented Sydney Thunder, and suspended from bowling in international cricket the following month, is now eligible to resume his international career. During the suspension, Hasnain was eligible to bowl in Pakistan’s domestic circuit, but the PCB had decided against it. Instead, he had to focus on tweaking his action. After considering sending Hasnain to an independent consultant, the PCB decided to assign its high-performance coach, Umar Rasheed, to work with him at Lahore’s High-Performance Centre. His tests took place at Lahore University of Management Sciences, an ICC-accredited testing laboratory on January 21. The test report, which was reviewed and verified by Cricket Australia’s independent expert, found his bowling action to be illegal.Related

Hasnain undergoes bowling test in bid to revive career

An early assessment had found that Hasnain was rotating his arm to swing the ball. This process was inconsistent and caused a jerk. To bowl quicker deliveries, his landing was wild, making his alignment go off. It is understood that the structure of his new bowling action remains the same though his wrist, arm rotation and landing have been tweaked allowing him to bowl with consistent and repeatable action. Rasheed helped rework his alignment, for which Hasnain delivered over 5000 balls and practised shadow bowling. Before Hasnain was suspended, he had been in and around Pakistan’s white-ball squads and had a T20I hat-trick to his name. He had impressed in his short stint at the BBL after being recruited as a replacement for English quick Saqib Mahmood. He had a successful debut, taking 3 for 20 in Thunder’s 28-run win over Adelaide Strikers.Hasnain was among the few young fast bowlers the PCB had invested in after the international appearances for Mohammad Amir and Wahab Riaz went became less and less frequent. He was also among a select few in Pakistan who hit the 145kph mark consistently. Whether he is able to retain the pace after remedial work is to be seen.He hasn’t played competitive cricket since the suspension. However, Rasheed is certain that his action is repeatable and that he is stronger than ever.
