Australia captain convinced that Jonny Bairstow’s stumping is a “non-event'”, but is ready for strong reaction at Headingley
Andrew McGlashan05-Jul-202311:37
What is the spirit of cricket? And why is it always England?
Pat Cummins has said that England should look at themselves and their own performances rather than invoking the spirit of cricket amid their anger at Jonny Bairstow’s stumping at Lord’s.The dismissal on the final day of the second Test – which Australia ended up winning by 43 runs despite a magnificent 155 from Ben Stokes – left the home side incensed, and reaction has reached fever pitch on both sides of the world since, including the Prime Ministers of each country getting involved.”For what I think is a pretty common non-event, it does seem like everyone has a pretty strong opinion about it,” Cummins said. “I don’t think there’s any discussion; it’s out. If the shoe was on the other foot, I wouldn’t be looking at the opposition, I’d probably be thinking [about] our own batter, and would be thinking it’s pretty silly.”Related

McCullum: Bairstow dismissal will 'galvanise' England in Ashes comeback bid
England hope Bairstow stumping cloud can have Ashes silver lining
England will have to become just the second side ever to come from 0-2 down if they are to regain the Ashes. Asked whether their reaction to the Bairstow dismissal has been a way to deflect from defeats, Cummins was not drawn directly into it, but added how impressed he was with how his team had handled the situation – from the immediate moment and the confrontations in the Long Room, to the 48 hours since, where the players themselves have said nothing unless asked.”I know what our team does, and that’s we concentrate on ourselves,” he said. “When we haven’t been playing up to scratch, we look pretty deeply at what we are doing, and try to make amends. We don’t apportion blame to conditions or opposition or anything else going on. I’m really proud of how our boys have conducted themselves [on] this tour, especially on that day five. I thought the way they maintained respect for the opposition, the umpires [and] the crowd, their dignity was first-class.”In his column for the , Stuart Broad wrote that he believes Cummins will come to regret the decision not to withdraw the appeal, while England coach Brendon McCullum referenced his own experience of controversially running Muthiah Muralidaran out, which in later years he apologised for. It was a tone Joe Root used again, while speaking ahead of the third Ashes Test at Headingley, which is his home ground.”I think Ben spoke very well on it at the end of the game. As a team, we want to play our cricket a certain way and want to leave a certain legacy,” Root said. “As a player, you want to play the game as how you want to play it. It was within the rules; it was technically out. If you’re happy with that, then fine. If not, I don’t think you can [criticise] other people that play the game slightly differently.””I don’t think there’s any discussion; it’s out”, Pat Cummins on Jonny Bairstow’s dismissal•AFP/Getty Images
Cummins, for his part, doubted his view would change. “Maybe ask me in years to come,” he said with a laugh. “I don’t think a conversation about the spirit of cricket even comes into a dismissal like that. It was plain and simple a stumping.”Cummins is expecting a hostile reception at Headingley – the scene of England’s remarkable Stokes-inspired victory in 2019 – although Australia’s captain reckons that would have been the case anyway. He said it was inevitable that players would face abuse from the public, and added that Australian crowds were as bad as anyone, but insisted it doesn’t bother his team.”People pay for their tickets, they can turn up… whilst I hope that I would never go to a sporting event and try to abuse players, some people do,” Cummins said. “I’m sure it’ll be a pretty fiery week from the crowd. But again, we’re on the field. I think in Australia, we’re as guilty as anyone a lot of the time. So I think it’s reality, to be honest.”If you’re going to play professional sport, unfortunately, that’s one of the things that you’re going to have to deal with. It’s nothing new. I think you could talk about it till the cows come home, but I doubt it’s going to make much of a difference.”Root, meanwhile, called on the fans who come to the Test to simply “support” England, but appeared to caution against things going too far.”I think that’s the most important thing – that you come in to support your nation. [It] doesn’t need to go beyond that,” he said. “It shouldn’t ever go beyond that. Everyone should be here to enjoy the cricket on the field. And, you know, that’s what it should be about, and shouldn’t be about anything other than that.”Cummins said that beyond the post-match presentation at Lord’s, he has not had any further conversations with Stokes, and had noted McCullum’s comments about the teams not sharing a beer, which Australia coach Andrew McDonald had termed “disappointing”.”I’ve got no problems at all with Baz,” Cummins said, having himself worked with McCullum in the IPL. “I know how much he loves a beer, so that was surprising. Maybe we just see this one differently, which is totally fine.”
da dobrowin: Tottenham Hotspur are in desperate need of investment from the hierarchy this summer if they are to reach the next level under Thomas Frank’s guidance.
da betcris: The Dane has been appointed to help build on their Europa League triumph at the end of the recent season, but if he is to do that, he will need to receive funds from the board.
However, despite their European success in 2024/25, their Premier League standing was nothing short of a disaster, finishing in a measly 17th position, losing 22 matches out of their 38 outings.
The new boss will have to find the right balance between their Champions League efforts and their attempts to rise back up the table, something which has become vital to owner Daniel Levy.
As previously mentioned, the lack of squad depth could be a huge hindrance to Frank’s efforts, needing to make key additions if he is to be an immediate success in North London.
The latest on Spurs’ hunt for new additions this summer
Striker Arnaud Kalimuendo has been a key target for Spurs throughout this window, after registering 18 goals in 34 outings for French side Stade Rennais this season.
Xavi Simons is another player on their radar throughout the off-season, as the Lilywhites aim to add a new dimension to their forward line ahead of the 2025/26 campaign.
However, another name has entered the frame in recent days, with Belgian centre-back Koni de Winter emerging as a potential defensive reinforcement, according to Corriere dello Sport via Sport Witness.
The report claims that Frank’s side are currently leading the race for the Genoa star, who could be available for as little as £25m throughout this summer.
It also states that the 23-year-old is subject to a lot of interest at present, with Crystal Palace also in the race for his signature, but that the Lilywhites currently hold the advantage in the pursuit of his services.
Why De Winter would be a better signing than Semenyo for Spurs
Antoine Semenyo is an attacker who has caught the eye in the Premier League this season, registering 16 combined goals and assists for Bournemouth.
The 25-year-old has enjoyed a breakthrough year in England’s top-flight, something which has captured the attention of Frank’s side – subsequently entering the race for his signature.
However, Manchester United are also in the race to land the Ghanaian international this window, with the Cherries demanding a fee in the region of £65m to part ways with the star man.
Given his tally in front of goal this campaign, he would certainly provide needed depth within the final third, but De Winter would certainly be a better addition for Frank this window.
Cristian Romero has been hugely touted with a move away from North London during the off-season, with Atlético and Real Madrid both keen to land the Argentinian.
Such a move would leave a huge hole in the starting eleven, something which the manager would need to address, with De Winter arguably the perfect fit for the backline.
The 23-year-old, who’s been labelled “imperious” by journalist Sacha Tavolieri, has completed 87% of the passes he’s attempted, with 1.7 per 90 going into the final third – handing an option for the side to play out from the back if needed.

He’s also won 58% of the tackles he’s entered, whilst winning 3.2 aerials per 90, offering an extremely talented defensive option that would improve the situation in the defensive third.
De Winter has also made 1.1 interceptions per 90 and 4.8 recoveries, helping the Italian side keep 10 clean sheets and secure a mid-table finish in 2024/25.
£25m in today’s market would be an excellent deal for the Lilywhites, handing Frank the platform he needs for success during his first year at the helm in North London.
Whilst Semenyo would be a superb signing, the need for added defensive reinforcements will be needed, especially if Romero departs, with the Belgian having the tools to fill any void.

Former captain Michael Clarke has been inducted into the Australian Cricket Hall of FameClarke, 43, accepted the honour on Thursday, nearly a decade after he closed the chapter on his remarkable playing career. He is the 64th inductee, with two further members to be named this season.Making his first-class debut for New South Wales at 17, Clarke captained Australia to victory in the 2015 ODI World Cup and led the side across 47 of his 115 Tests.Overall, Clarke scored 8643 Test runs, putting him sixth on Australia’s all-time list, and 7981 in ODIs where he stands fourth. His tally of 28 Test centuries also leaves puts him sixth on that list.Having impressed early in his ODI career – he wasn’t dismissed in his first three innings – Clarke burst onto the Test scene during Australia’s 2004 tour of India, crowned the player of the match in Bengaluru after scoring 151 on debut. After being dropped in late 2005, Clarke returned a even more formidable player. He became the sixth Australian to score a Test triple-century after posting an unbeaten 329 against India at the SCG in the 2011-12 series. He followed up his SCG performance with a double century in the fourth Test against India, before notching two further double centuries against South Africa the following season.Other standout innings included the 151 against South Africa at Cape Town in 2011 (from a total of 284) in the game Australia were later dismissed for 47, his 161 at the same venue in 2014 when he defied a broken shoulder to set up a victory that would take Australia to No. 1 in the world and the hugely emotional 128 against India at Adelaide in 2014 shortly after the death of the Phillip Hughes in what would prove his final home Test.Michael Clarke was prolific in the period from 2012 to 2014•Getty Images
It had been in 2011, after England won the Ashes 3-1 in Australia, that Clarke succeeded Ricky Ponting as captain. At his peak, he was ranked the best batter in the world. He was also at the helm for the Ashes whitewash in 2013-14 and retired at the end of the lost 2015 campaign in England.”To be able to sit along so many wonderful players, idols, role models growing up as a kid and looking up to is something I’m honoured by,” Clarke said. “Retirement does a lot of things to you. Through stages of watching cricket now, you miss parts.”When you play at the highest level, people talk about your international career but for me, it started at six years of age. I retired at 34 so it was my life. It’s still a part of my life.”Cricket – it’s probably so similar to life in general. You walk out and make 100 and then lift the bat, and then you walk out to field, field in slip and drop a catch second ball of the game.”Australian Cricket Hall of Fame chairman Peter King praised Clarke as a player who “defined his generation”.”Michael’s extraordinary first-class playing career started at just 17 at the SCG – the place where many of his highlights occurred, including a Test triple century against India in 2012,” King said.”Michael’s career will forever be remembered fondly by the Australian public and his standing held alongside those at the upper echelon of our game.”Clarke also proved capable as a left-arm spinner. It was his spell of 3 for 5 in 1.5 overs in 2008 against India that helped Australia retain the Border-Gavaskar Trophy and extend their winning streak to a record-equaling 16 Tests. In his debut series against India he had also taken 6 for 9 in Mumbai.

da dobrowin: Newcastle United are on the hunt for what seems to be their primary target this summer, a new right winger.
da 888casino: The Magpies have a huge season ahead of them, with Champions League football returning to St James’ Park, and are looking for extra depth on the right to go along with Jacob Murphy.
After being rejected by Bryan Mbeumo, the Magpies seemingly switched their attention to Anthony Elanga.
According to David Ornstein, they placed a bid of around £45m, but that was rejected by Nottingham Forest, the Sweden international’s current club.
Whilst there is still a chance they could return with a bid for Elanga, there have been reports about their new targets out wide.
Newcastle's new right-wing targets
It is definitely a blow for the North East giants to perhaps lose out on the signing of Elanga. He was a player they have seemingly targeted for a while, having made a move for him last summer. However, they certainly have other options.
Transfer Focus
Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.
It seems as though Newcastle could move for a new target after they failed to sign Elanga. Keith Downie of Sky Sports reported a few days ago that they are ‘exploring’ a move for other players, including Borussia Dortmund winger Karim Adeyemi.
If Eddie Howe’s side decide to try and sign the Germany international, he could cost £43m, according to SportBILD a few weeks ago.
The same report also suggests that Juventus, Liverpool and Chelsea are also interested in the winger, although it is not clear if they will challenge the Magpies in their move or Howe gets a clear run at his latest winger target.
How Adeyemi compares to Anthony Elanga
At 23 years of age, Adeyemi has already played a great deal of football at the highest level and has made a great impression. He notably impressed last season for Dortmund despite struggling with an injury, and is now playing in the Club World Cup in the United States.
In 2024/25 so far, including the ongoing competition happening Stateside, he has played 38 times, scoring an impressive 12 goals and grabbing a further nine assists. Given that he has featured for just 2,261 minutes, the equivalent of 25.1 full 90-minute games, contributing to 21 goals in that time is a great effort.
The Magpies will certainly know a bit about the damage Adeyemi can cause. Having played against him twice before in the Champions League, he grabbed an assist against them at Signal Iduna Park. Adeyemi’s quick feet and excellent long pass enabled Julian Brandt to counter-attack Newcastle, which he ended up scoring.
Sweden international Elanga had a fantastic campaign in the Premier League last season too. He played all 38 of Forest’s games, scoring six goals and grabbing 11 assists, including a sublime effort against former side Manchester United.
Those numbers are fairly similar to the ones Adeyemi put up in the Bundesliga; he contributed 13 goals and assists in the German top flight, but played just 25 games.
Described as a “counter-attacking weapon” by football talent scout Jacek Kulig and as “unstoppable” by football analyst Ben Mattinson, you can certainly see how that is similar to Elanga by watching how quick he is in the above goal. Adeyemi is not exactly slow, and, as per Speeds Database, has a top speed of 36.30 km/h.
Statistically, via FBref, Adeyemi has numbers which far exceed Elanga. For example, the German international averaged 0.82 goal involvements and 0.69 goal-creating actions per 90 minutes, compared to the Forest star’s 0.61 goals and assists and 0.65 goal-creating actions each game.

If this is the type of profile Newcastle want to sign this summer, and they miss out on Elanga, they might end up with the better option in Adeyemi. The Dortmund attacker is quick, dangerous in transition and able to score and assist at a consistent level, more so than Elanga.

For £43m, a fee they’re clearly willing to spend, this seems like a fantastic addition to the Magpies’ squad, and could be a better option than the Forest star.

Voting body uses own votes to reduce the size of that very body by 59%.

Sri Lanka Cricket’s internal politics and administration is set for sweeping change after the board announced a drastic reduction in votes, from 147 to 60. What is remarkable is that this decision was made by the voting members, meaning the voting body has used their own votes to reduce the size of that very body by 59%.These events took place during an extraordinary general meeting of SLC on Friday, during which the SLC membership “approved significant amendments to the Constitution of SLC, reaffirming its commitment to fostering good governance, transparency, inclusivity, and efficiency in its management structure”, according to the board’s own release.Though SLC’s current constitution, which was drafted soon after Sri Lanka’s World Cup win in 1996, has long been criticised as the font of dysfunction in Sri Lankan cricket (because many of the 147 votes belonged to defunct clubs or ineffective district and provincial associations), there has been little political will within the membership to vote for reform, particularly as votes equated to power within the SLC structure. It is likely that broader political changes within Sri Lanka has affected this vote, however. The recent elections centred on issues of good governance, and combating corruption. In the 21st century, SLC has been seen within Sri Lanka as one of the most dysfunctional institutions in the country, as well as one in which substantial wheeling-and-dealing occurred. This fresh amendment aims to optimise SLC’s decision-making, the board release said.”The new voting structure ensures that voting rights are determined solely based on the level of cricket played by each member club, with all qualified clubs and associations being entitled to only one vote. This marks a pivotal step towards equitable representation and streamlined decision-making.”Several sports ministers, past cricketers, and interim heads of SLC had long spoken of the need to change the constitution. In fact a group of concerned citizens, including former players, had petitioned Sri Lanka’s courts in early 2021 to overhaul the SLC constitution. But it was always seen as highly unlikely for the governing body’s membership to vote against their own self interest.A shift in Sri Lanka’s political environment, however, may have made such a vote possible.
da prosport bet: Nottingham Forest are now willing to make a £21m bid for a “superb” midfielder, which would be enough to get a deal over the line, according to a report.
Forest eyeing new signings amid Elanga uncertainty
da cassino online: After making an unexpected push for the Champions League places last season, there was also going to be interest in some of Forest’s best-performing players this summer, and the future of Anthony Elanga remains very much up in the air.
Newcastle United, who pipped the Tricky Trees to a fifth-place finish, are now thought to be closing in on a move for Elanga, which would be a major blow, given that the Sweden international amassed 17 Premier League goal contributions in the 2024-25 campaign.
As such, Nuno has been running the rule over potential replacements for the winger, with FC Porto’s Pepe believed to be of interest, having held talks over a deal for the 28-year-old, while Juventus’ Timothy Weah has turned down a move to the City Ground.
Nottingham Forest set to make £20m+ move for EURO 2024 Golden Boot winner
Nottingham Forest have joined the race to sign a promising young striker.

Having missed out on Weah, Nottingham Forest have now turned their attentions to another Serie A player, with a report from Gazzetta dello Sport (via Sport Witness) revealing they are now willing to make a €25m (£21m) offer for AC Milan midfielder Yunus Musah.
Musah is described as being one of the key candidates to leave Milan, with the Italian club looking to raise funds for their own transfer business, and a move to the City Ground could be on the cards, as there is a belief he could shine in the Premier League.
AC Milan'sYunusMusahin action with Girona's Donny van de Beek
Milan would be likely to accept a £21m offer, but there is set to be competition for the central midfielder’s signature, with Wolverhampton Wanderers also willing to make a bid of the same value.
"Superb" Musah could flourish at Forest
Despite being just 22-years-old, the maestro already has plenty of experience in some major European leagues, making 108 appearances with Valencia, before going on to receive regular game time with current club AC Milan.
During that time, the USA international has displayed his versatility, predominantly featuring in central midfield, but also playing on both wings, perhaps due to his stellar dribbling ability, ranking in the 93rd percentile for successful take-ons per 90 over the past year.
Scout Jacek Kulig also lauded the American for his “superb” performances at the 2022 World Cup, showcasing his ability to perform at the top level, which could make the Milan ace a solid signing for a Forest side with aspirations of competing in Europe.
Nuno’s side should be wary of Wolves’ interest, but Europa Conference League football being on offer at the City Ground next season could give them an edge in negotiations for Musah.
