Nat Sciver scores fifty, Sophie Ecclestone bags three as England secure semi-final berth

England’s 46-run victory over West Indies takes them a step closer to the title decider

The Report by Valkerie Baynes01-Mar-2020

England took another step towards the title decider by booking their place in the semi-finals with a convincing victory over West Indies in Sydney. Before her side left for the tournament, England’s new Australian coach, Lisa Keightley, had stated that she expected her charges to be in the final and, while their wobble against an impressive South Africa in their opening match raised concerns that objective might be under threat, their latest performance confirmed it remains the basis of their expectations.Natalie Sciver set the tone with another half-century to lead England to a competitive total on a pitch where, earlier in the day, South Africa had managed 136 for 6 in advancing to the knockout stages with victory over Pakistan. Sophie Ecclestone finished the job with an emphatic 3 for 7 off 3.1 overs. The bowlers were undermined by some sloppy fielding from England, but a spate of troubling injuries for West Indies helped to put the result beyond doubt.England bowler Kate Cross was taken to hospital after hurting her ankle during the warm-up. While Cross has not played so far in the tournament and was not due to face West Indies, any enforced absence would rob England of an option at the business end of their campaign. But it was a groin injury to West Indies captain Stafanie Taylor, that led to her being stretchered from the field after retiring hurt on 15, that put a serious dent in her side’s prospects of taking the fight to England. Taylor played no further part in the game as England moved to the top of Group B with a superior net run rate to South Africa, who also have six points with a game in hand. Their opponents will be decided in the final round of matches, with India already through, and Australia and New Zealand primed for a winner-takes-all clash on Sunday.Stunning SciverSciver’s rich vein of form continued, her third fifty in four innings at this World Cup had match-winning potential all over it. Sciver made 57 off 56 balls on a slow pitch, following innings of 50 in a losing cause against South Africa, an unbeaten 59 against Thailand and 36 against Pakistan.Sciver’s command of the innings became ever more important when England’s other in-form batsman, Heather Knight, was run out through what looked like a lack of urgency on the part of the England captain. She ambled through for a single and was found short of her ground as Shakera Selman fired the ball in from short midwicket. Like Knight before her, Sciver fell slightly tamely with an over of the innings to come, spooning a catch to Hayley Matthews at midwicket, but her touch is undeniable.Top-order shuffleEngland’s top order has been a talking point so far in this tournament, with Tammy Beaumont being pushed down the order – ostensibly due to her superior skills at the death – in favour of an opening partnership of Danni Wyatt and Amy Jones. The jury remains out after Beaumont was moved back up to the top after Jones had struggled with scores of 23, 0 and 2. Beaumont was out for a second-ball duck, playing round a full Selman delivery which pinned her plumb in front of the stumps. But if that part of the switch didn’t pay off, then Jones’ free-flowing cameo at No.6 against West Indies certainly did. She scored an unbeaten 23 off 13 balls, including three fours, to provide England with some vital late momentum as they claimed 36 runs in the final three overs. While Beaumont and Jones have opened together in ODIs in recent times, that effort, along with Wyatt’s solid 29 off 27 balls at No.1, looks to have cemented their respective roles for the final matches.Taylor troubleWhen Taylor was stretchered off with an apparent groin injury, the wind seemed to go out of West Indies’ sails. Taylor struck a Sciver delivery towards cover and set off but could barely manage to hobble through and collapsed to the ground clutching at her upper thigh in obvious agony. The same motorised stretcher that had driven Cross from the ground before the match was called upon again and Taylor retired hurt.It was not the only worrying injury for West Indies, with Britney Cooper rolling her ankle as she ran between the wickets and battling with discomfort for the rest of her innings, which by necessity consisted of her taking aim at the boundary rather than seeking singles. She was out attempting a big shot off Ecclestone only to find herself stumped.Spin twins… triplets?Ecclestone was in the thick of the action, dismissing Deandra Dottin with just her sixth ball, in the third over of West Indies’ chase. Ecclestone tempted Dottin into a pull that wasn’t there to be had, and Sciver took a low catch at short midwicket. Ecclestone also took the last wicket, pegging back Anisa Mohammed’s off stump to seal the win and claim her 50th wicket in T20Is. That a proven performer like Ecclestone was delivering wickets was no surprise, nor was it that Sarah Glenn, a legspining revelation for England in the past few months, was also instrumental. Glenn finished with 2 for 16 from her four overs, giving her six wickets for the tournament so far at an average of 11.33 and following her her 3 for 15 in the previous match against Pakistan. On a pitch that was conducive to spin, England opted for a third specialist in the area, Mady Villiers. Making her World Cup debut and playing just her fourth T20 international, offspinner Villiers opened with a wicket maiden when she took a sharp return catch with just her fourth ball to dismiss Shemaine Campbelle, all the while avoiding a near collision with non-striker Chedean Nation.

Celtic told to replace Brendan Rodgers with exciting young coach

da poker: Celtic may have just been told exactly how to replace Brendan Rodgers after a tricky season at Celtic Park.

Rodgers struggling with the Hoops

da blaze casino: All is clearly not well on and off the pitch with last season's Scottish Premiership winners. Ex-Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers took the reigns after the departure of Ange Postecoglou for Tottenham, but it has been a far less impressive campaign than he will have been hoping for, despite now sitting top of the league once more.

The club’s stance seems fairly firm.

They finished bottom of their group in the Champions League, winning just a single game and conceding 15 times in their six games, including a 6-0 hammering at the hands of Atletico Madrid, a pair of stats that handed them the second worst goal difference (-10) of any side in the group stage (beaten only by Royal Antwerp, who finished with -11).

There have also been talks of behind the scenes issues that have also played into an overall feeling of discontent at Celtic Park this season, something that stretches far beyond performances alone.

And overall, it has led to plenty of speculation over the future of Rodgers, who could well be leaving his post should things not improve.

Celtic told what to do next

Now, former Aberdeen club chief Keith Wyness has told Celtic exactly how to fix their managerial problem, and has urged them to go for a young dynamic coach from the continent rather than shopping so close to home this time around. Wyness served as CEO for Aberdeen between 2000 and 2004, and also worked with Aston Villa (2016-2018) and Everton (2004-2009).

Speaking to Football Insider, he explained that “I think Celtic would be looking outside of Scotland if they were to replace Rodgers". As for who, he felt a longer-term project will be the solution.

“They should go for a young, European manager. I think they’d want to go back to that sort of route. They obviously see themselves as a progressive, forward-thinking club.

“I don’t think they should go for a stop-gap. For me, they should target someone like Roberto De Zerbi. Not him, of course – but someone like him. There are a few around who could be looked at."

However, he added that were Rodgers to turn things around and clinch the Scottish Premiership title, he would not be surprised to see him stay at the helm.

“For now, if they win the league – I’m sure it will be business as usual at Celtic and Rodgers will probably remain in post.”

Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers looks on.

Replacing Postecoglou and following in the footsteps of his popular reign in Glasgow was always going to be a difficult ask, and it one that Rodgers appears to be struggling with. A fresh start could be just what the club needs to rediscover their identity.

'Right decision' reached as England un-declare after no-ball reprieve

Confusion at Port Elizabeth as wicket is overturned following Joe Root’s declaration

Mark Wood smashed a quickfire 42•Stu Forster/Getty Images

South Africa’s frustrations on the second afternoon at Port Elizabeth were exacerbated by a bizarre incident towards the end of England’s first innings, when Joe Root was permitted to withdraw his team’s declaration after an umpiring error. The incident occurred in the 149th over of England’s innings, after the apparent dismissal of Mark Wood who was caught at mid-on off the bowling of Kagiso Rabada.Root waved his batsmen in with the score of 467 for 9, only to change his decision when Rabada’s delivery was shown by the TV umpire to have been a no-ball.England were handed the extra run as the players returned to the middle, and went on to add a further 31 runs in 20 deliveries, before Wood was this time legally dismissed for 42, leaving Ollie Pope unbeaten on 135.According to Law 15.3, pertaining to declaration and forfeitures, a captain’s decision “cannot be changed” once he has notified the opposing captain and the umpires. However, an MCC spokesperson told ESPNcricinfo that the “right decision” had been reached, given that the ICC’s playing regulations make provision for the use of replays to aid decision-making.”One should have some sympathy for Root,” the spokesman added, “because it is clear that, had the umpires not made an error in failing to call the no-ball, he would not have declared when he did.”Although the ICC’s playing conditions make no specific reference to erroneous declarations, clause 2.5.4 states that, in the event of a no-ball being called following a check by the third umpire, “the batting side shall benefit from the reversal of the decision, and the one run for the no-ball, but shall not benefit from any runs that may subsequently have accrued.”In other words, the state of the game resets to the point at which the error was made, therefore rendering the declaration void. There is one known precedent for a captain withdrawing his declaration – at Old Trafford during the 1921 Ashes, when England’s declaration was deemed illegal due to the match having been reduced to a two-day game due to a washed-out first day.The regulations in force at the time required the side about to go in to be given 100 minutes’ batting time before the close – a point that Warwick Armstrong, Australia’s captain, put to the umpires and his opposite number, The Hon. Lionel Tennyson, following an intervention from Hanson Carter, his wicketkeeper.Wisden’s match report called it “an unfortunate and rather lamentable incident”.

Lord's under scrutiny again as prices rise for India Test in 2025

Club unmoved by concern over empty stands against Sri Lanka, citing higher demand

Ticket prices for next year’s Lord’s Test against India have risen once again, despite Marylebone Cricket Club coming in for severe criticism for the cost of entry to this summer’s Test against Sri Lanka. For the first three days of the India Test, which begins on July 10 next year, the cheapest adult tickets on offer are restricted-view seats for £90 each (£20 for under-16s). Those with a clear line of sight are priced between £120-£175 (£40-£50 for under-16s).These prices compare unfavourably with last month’s Test against Sri Lanka, for which the cost of unrestricted views ranged from £115-£140 for adults and £15-£40 for concessions. That Sri Lanka contest concluded on the fourth day, for which just 9,000 tickets (approx one-third capacity) were sold. This was, in part, a reflection of England’s current fast-paced approach to Test cricket, with several recent contests being wrapped up well in advance of the final day.MCC came under further criticism for failing to offer any reduced-entry options until after tea on that fourth day, when the price fell to £15 for adults and £5 for under-16s. By then, however, there were just three Sri Lanka wickets left to fall, and the lack of advance notice further prevented a significant take-up.Related

England to host India Men and Women tours in 2025

Speaking in the aftermath of the Test, England’s stand-in captain Ollie Pope said that the subdued atmosphere had been noted by his team.”It was just like ‘jeez, it seems quiet today’,” he said. “I’m not sure if people expected the game to be done by day four or not. It’s a shame it wasn’t a full house because it was obviously a good day’s play.”Despite Guy Lavender, the chief executive and secretary of MCC, announcing that the club would be conducting a review into its fourth-day pricing policy, there is little concession for fans who hope to attend on that day for next year’s India Test. Under-16s will be admitted for £25, half the cost of the first three days, but tickets with a full view will still cost £90-£150.MCC’s rationale is that India are now the second-biggest draw in the English Test calendar, behind Australia, and the prices reflect the likely demand, which is in line with the policy adopted by other sports. The top-priced tickets for the 2023 Ashes Test were £170, which the club argues represents a below-inflation increase of £5.Lord’s is also due to host the World Test Championship final in June, which is currently on course to be contested between India and Australia, a rematch of the 2023 final at the Kia Oval. Tickets for that match are set between £70-130 for adults and £20-£50 for under-16s.England and India are also due to play a women’s ODI at Lord’s in 2025, for which adult tickets will be available for between £25 and £45. The men’s ODI against South Africa, on the other hand, will cost between £75 and £150.

Simon Harmer claimed his second four-wicket haul of the Vitality County Championship match as Essex wrapped up an innings victory over Nottinghamshire before lunch on the final day.The South African off-spinner finished with 4 for 93 as Nottinghamshire’s batting collapsed for a second time in double-quick time to lose by an innings and 83 runs. The relegation-threatened visitors folded from their overnight 180 for 2, still needing 184 to make Essex bat again, losing their remaining eight wickets in 38 overs while adding 101 runs in an extended morning session. They had conceded a 364-run deficit on first innings when bowled out for just 93.Harmer, who added two wickets in the morning, was ably supported by Sam Cook and Paul Walter, who took two wickets apiece to condemn Nottinghamshire to their fourth defeat of the season.Needing to take eight wickets to claim their first win in five games, Essex made early inroads. Cook sent back the two overnight batsmen, Haseeb Hameed and Joe Clarke, inside the first 20 minutes to end their 137-run third-wicket stand. Hameed shaped to play the ball down to third man and was lbw after advancing his score by five to 105 from 166 balls.Clarke followed, chasing a delivery outside off-stump for Harmer to take the catch high to his right at second slip.Jack Haynes and Kyle Verreynne weighed anchor, scoring at two an over for a dozen overs before Walter struck twice in the space of three balls. Haynes departed for eight from 48 balls, aiming to play to leg but getting a leading edge back to the bowler. Lyndon James then fell to a spectacular flying catch at cover by Shane Snater. The new ball accounted for Liam Patterson-White slashing at the third delivery from Jamie Porter with Michael Pepper moving across the claim in front of first slip. The new Kookaburra was only six overs old when Harmer returned and with his fourth delivery had Rob Lord lobbing the ball into bat-pad’s hands. Two balls later Luke Fletcher fell for a three-ball pair when he was bowled. With one wicket standing, Essex claimed the extra half-hour but found Verreynne in obdurate mood for his unbeaten 38. Sixteen-year-old Farhan Ahmed was learning on the job before he nicked behind Snater’s second ball of the seventh extra over.

Contudo, eleenfrenta rejeição dentro do próprio conjunto.

It's not Nwaneri: Arsenal are brewing Odegaard 2.0 in "box-crashing" gem

da supremo: Ask an Arsenal fan what the positives to come out of this season have been, and we’d bet their only answer would be the development of their youth talent.

da 888casino: For example, the player who’s been on everyone’s lips over the last couple of weeks has been Hale End’s own Myles Lewis-Skelly.

The incredible talent was named in Thomas Tuchel’s first England squad, and on top of starting both games, he scored on his debut, sending his stock stratospheric.

The good news is that Hale End’s conveyor belt of talent is showing no signs of slowing down either, and one youngster looks like he could be the club’s next Martin Odegaard, and no, it’s not Ethan Nwaneri.

Nwaneri's rapid rise

The first glimpse fans got of Nwaneri in the first team came all the way back in September 2022, when Mikel Arteta sent him on in the dying embers of a 3-0 Premier League win away to Brentford.

The Hale End sensation was just 15 years and 181 days old at the time, making him the competition’s youngest player ever, and while he made another short cameo away to West Ham United the following campaign, he had to wait until this season to truly get his chance in the first team.

However, while he was likely clamouring to get on the pitch earlier, it appears as if Arteta and Co played it perfectly, as not only is the 18-year-old now regularly starting games but he’s also been arguably the team’s most dangerous attacker since Bukayo Saka suffered his hamstring injury in December.

For example, in just 29 appearances, totalling 1087 minutes, the “unplayable” teen, as dubbed by Jack Wilshere, has scored eight goals and provided one assist, meaning he’s averaging a goal involvement every 3.22 appearances, or, far more impressively, every 120.77 minutes.

So, with this rapid rise from academy gem to first-team star, why is the Enfield-born ace the club’s ‘next Odegaard?’

Well, simply put, it seems like Nwaneri’s best position, at least for the time being, is on the wing, and when he does play in midfield, he is far more aggressive than the Norwegian and far more intent on scoring himself than playing an intricate passing game and laying the ball off for someone else to finish.

Moreover, there is another young star in Hale End who very much could be the next iteration of the captain.

In The Pipeline

Football FanCast’s In the Pipeline series aims to uncover the very best youth players in world football.

Arsenal's next Odegaard

This season has been quite remarkable in terms of youth players like Nwaneri and Lewis-Skelly coming straight into and thriving in the first team for Arsenal, but the same thing could happen with Dan Casey next year.

The incredible 17-year-old prospect has been in sensational form for the youth sides this term and could be the academy gem who eventually takes Odegaard’s place in the first team set up a few years from now.

With that said, what makes the Hale Ender a potential candidate to replace the Norwegian in the long term?

Well, the first thing is that he is far more positionally similar to the 26-year-old than Nwaneri, for example, as while he can play out wide and has even spent some time up top, his two most played positions are attacking and central midfield.

So, this would indicate that, like the former Real Madrid ace, he can be an incredibly effective outlet in the final third, but also has the game intelligence and technical ability to play in deeper areas and bring the ball out from the back when needed.

The second reason he could follow in the Drammen-born star’s footsteps is that he simply has the raw talent to do so.

For example, in 24 appearances this season, totalling 1589 minutes, the “box-crashing” midfielder, as dubbed by analyst Ben Mattinson, has put the ball in the back of the net 17 times and provided two assists to boot.

That means the “very talented” 17-year-old, as dubbed by Hale End expert Jeorge Bird, is averaging a goal involvement every 1.26 appearances, or every 83.63 minutes.

Ultimately, Arsenal have seen a couple of potential superstars come out of the academy this season, and with Casey, it looks like it could happen again next year.

Forest eyeing new signings amid Elanga uncertainty

da cassino online: After making an unexpected push for the Champions League places last season, there was also going to be interest in some of Forest’s best-performing players this summer, and the future of Anthony Elanga remains very much up in the air.

Newcastle United, who pipped the Tricky Trees to a fifth-place finish, are now thought to be closing in on a move for Elanga, which would be a major blow, given that the Sweden international amassed 17 Premier League goal contributions in the 2024-25 campaign.

As such, Nuno has been running the rule over potential replacements for the winger, with FC Porto’s Pepe believed to be of interest, having held talks over a deal for the 28-year-old, while Juventus’ Timothy Weah has turned down a move to the City Ground.

Having missed out on Weah, Nottingham Forest have now turned their attentions to another Serie A player, with a report from Gazzetta dello Sport (via Sport Witness) revealing they are now willing to make a €25m (£21m) offer for AC Milan midfielder Yunus Musah.

Musah is described as being one of the key candidates to leave Milan, with the Italian club looking to raise funds for their own transfer business, and a move to the City Ground could be on the cards, as there is a belief he could shine in the Premier League.

Milan would be likely to accept a £21m offer, but there is set to be competition for the central midfielder’s signature, with Wolverhampton Wanderers also willing to make a bid of the same value.

Despite being just 22-years-old, the maestro already has plenty of experience in some major European leagues, making 108 appearances with Valencia, before going on to receive regular game time with current club AC Milan.

During that time, the USA international has displayed his versatility, predominantly featuring in central midfield, but also playing on both wings, perhaps due to his stellar dribbling ability, ranking in the 93rd percentile for successful take-ons per 90 over the past year.

Scout Jacek Kulig also lauded the American for his “superb” performances at the 2022 World Cup, showcasing his ability to perform at the top level, which could make the Milan ace a solid signing for a Forest side with aspirations of competing in Europe.

Nuno’s side should be wary of Wolves’ interest, but Europa Conference League football being on offer at the City Ground next season could give them an edge in negotiations for Musah.
