Former Man Utd ace was meant to be next Ronaldo and is now struggling

da betsul: The first impression is always vital when a new player arrives at a club, especially for a side like Manchester United.

da dobrowin: When anyone joins the Red Devils, whether it be a player or a manager, the expectation is to bring success and perform almost instantly.

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag speaks toAntony

In recent years, only a handful of signings have consistently performed at Old Trafford, with the likes of Antony and Jadon Sancho being examples of individuals who have been unable to star in the Premier League thus far.

With that in mind, let’s take a look at another player who once promised to be a world-beater but instead failed to live up to their apparent potential.

Meet the star who was meant to be the next Cristiano Ronaldo

In 2011, a promising Belgian talent named Adnan Januzaj joined Man United from Anderlecht as a 16-year-old, where he instantly impressed.

On October 5th, 2013, the number 44 was announced in the starting lineup for the first time under David Moyes as Man United faced Sunderland at the Stadium of Light.

The then-18-year-old was absolutely electric, netting a brace that handed the Red Devils a 2-1 win, which was certainly the perfect way to introduce yourself to the footballing world.

After the game, Januzaj received plenty of praise and encouragement, with Moyes comparing his quality to Wayne Rooney and United youth coach Eric Harrison stating: “Januzaj is outstanding and I think he is similar to Cristiano Ronaldo".

However, the following season saw the arrival of Louis van Gaal, which the winger later claimed to be the reason why he never lived up to his potential at United, despite being an "unbelievable" talent, as per football creator Liam Canning.

Roy Keane's “biggest disappointment" has now become "superb" for Man Utd

The United star has had a remarkable turnaround after a difficult start.

ByTom Lever Mar 14, 2024 Adnan Januzaj’s career since his debut

During the Dutch manager’s first campaign at the club, Januzaj’s minutes and opportunities took a huge hit, starting just seven times in the 2014/15 Premier League.

A year later, the Belgium international only made just two league starts across the campaign, which was due to two separate injuries and a short loan spell at Borussia Dortmund.

With the left-footed ace failing to progress much further, in 2016, he joined Sunderland on a season-long loan in an attempt to revive his career, but over 25 matches, he failed to score a single goal.

In 2017, Januzaj eventually left Old Trafford after a troubled few seasons, joining Real Sociedad in a deal worth £9.8m, a club he would go on to score 23 goals in 168 appearances for.

Five years later, the former Red Devil moved to another La Liga side, this time joining Sevilla on a free transfer, which is where he plays his football today.

Despite being at the club for two seasons, Januzaj has only made 17 appearances, with a failed loan spell at Istanbul Basaksehir in between, where he scored three times in 17 games.

Fast-forward to this season, and the former wonderkid has featured just eight times, even though he has not suffered from any injuries. Januzaj has averaged just 24 minutes per game, and he truly cannot get a game, starting zero times.

At just 29 years of age, the number 25’s career has become completely stagnant, and there have been no signs of him turning it around, especially not at Sevilla.

In truth, it is extremely sad and disappointing to see how Januzaj’s career has unfolded, especially considering just how fantastic he was in his first season under Moyes, after being compared to the legendary Ronaldo in his early days at Old Trafford.

Nafay-Talat stand, Al Islam's thrilling cameo take Chittagong to final

Chittagong were all but out but fought back in a see-sawing contest

Mohammad Isam05-Feb-2025

Chittagong Kings celebrate a thrilling win that sealed their spot in the final of BPL 2025•Chittagong Kings

Al Islam’s last-ball four, that too a classic cover drive, took Chittagong Kings to the BPL final. In an absolute see-saw battle, Aliss came back after injuring himself earlier in the last over, to hit the winning boundary and beat Khulna Tigers by two wickets in the second qualifier.Islam was unbeaten on 17 off seven balls, with two fours and a six, to take the Chittagong franchise into their second BPL final. They will face defending champions, and favourites, Fortune Barishal at the Shere Bangla National Stadium on Friday.Chasing Khulna’s 163 for 6, Chittagong were all but out of the contest before Aliss got them back with his surprise cameo. Earlier, Khulna were powered by Shimron Hetmyer’s 63 to reach 163 for 6 in 20 overs. They went at less than six runs an over for the first 16 overs.Aliss the KingChittagong’s batting order, that lacked depth, was left exposed when tail-ender Khaled Ahmed walked in to bat at No 7. They slipped from 105 for 2 to 130 for 7 between overs 13 and 17. Arafat Sunny and Aliss then added 26 runs, with both hitting a couple of boundaries each. When Aliss slipped in the last over, he hurt his ankle. Shoriful Islam walked in, inside edged a boundary. But he fell next ball, and Chittagong’s players put on Aliss’ pads for him and he walked out again. He smashed Musfik Hasan for a boundary and sparked huge celebrations.Nafay powers ChittagongChittagong lost two of their big-hitters early in the chase. Parvez Hossain Emon holed out to mid-on before Graham Clark, smarting from a blow to the nose while fielding, missing a straight one from Hasan Mahmud. Khawaja Nafay though kept the run rate at a fair clip with this combination of quick singles and no-look clips on the leg side. He added 70 runs for the third wicket with Hussain Talat, fresh off his great form in the Champions T20 Cup (Pakistan’s domestic T20 competition) recently. The Pakistani pair relied a lot on rotating the strike but just when the boundaries dried up, Talat struck the big ones. He made 40 off 25 balls with five fours and a six, while Nafay reached his second half-century for the season, as Chittagong looked to be sailing smoothly.Nasum double sparks a collapseTalat swung Nasum towards the deep-square-leg boundary in the 13th over, only to be caught in the boundary. It sparked a collapse as Shamim Hossain also top edged Nasum in his next over, before Musfik accounted for Nafay. The set batter couldn’t get going after reaching his fifty, missing on a lap shot against the fast bowler. He removed Khaled later in the over, before the Chittagong captain Mohammad Mithun top edged Hasan Mahmud in the 17th over.Chittagong apply the squeezeEarlier in the evening, Khulna didn’t get going with the bat for a long time. They lost captain Mehidy Hasan Miraz in the third over when Binura Fernando got one to scissor through him. Islam then had Alex Ross caught and bowled in the following over, before Khaled Ahmed, Chittagong’s best bowler, removed Mohammad Naim, Khulna’s best batter, for 19.Afif Hossain also couldn’t resuscitate Khulna, making just 8 off 14 balls, before holing out in the deep in the ninth over. Chittagong applied the squeeze and then some, keeping Khulna from hitting boundaries for more than six overs. Aliss completed his four overs during this period, going for just 14 runs. Hetmyer, at the crease, didn’t help matters, as they meandered to 92 for four at the end of the 16th over.Hetmyer does his thingWith their backs to their wall, Khulna really needed a boost at this stage of their innings. Mahidul Islam Ankon, who had hit the two sixes in the innings thus far, slammed Khaled before Hetmyer got two sixes to take 23 off the 17th over. Shoriful removed Mahidul first ball next over, but Hetmyer still found two fours in the over. Fernando, who had given away just six runs in his first three overs, then came into Hetmyer’s crosshairs. The left-hander struck him for two fours and two sixes in his first four balls, before falling off the last ball. Hetmyer had arrived for Khulna just before the eliminator match against Rangpur, having just played in the ILT20.Mohammad Nawaz and Jason Holder cobbled together 17 runs in the final over, to give Khulna the much-needed boost. They made 71 off the last four overs to finish on 163 for 6, but it wasn’t enough.

Report: Everton join race to sign versatile “assist machine” this summer

da roleta: Everton have reportedly joined the race to sign a versatile “assist machine” in the summer transfer window, but other Premier League clubs are also in the mix.

    Everton transfer news

da supremo: This has been a season that Blues supporters will want to forget in a hurry, and for now, the sole aim has to be ensuring their relegation to the Championship doesn't happen. The issues surrounding point deductions and the ownership situation are acting as a huge distraction, however, which is far from ideal.

Assuming Everton remain in the Premier League for yet another season, attention will then be turned to new signings, assuming the finances are there to conduct some transfer business.

Arsenal's Omari Benjamin is reportedly a target, with the promising attacker compared to current Gunners superstar Bukayo Saka and showing flashes of huge potential in the youth ranks in North London. He is likely to be a free agent at the end of the season, at which point the Blues could look to pounce as they plot long-term signings at minimal cost.

    Everton want versatile "assist machine"

According to Tutto Juve [via Sport Witness], Everton have entered the race to sign Juventus youngster Samuel Iling-Junior this summer, who could also be available for a realtively low fee. Juve are thought to be willing to let Iling-Junior leave for just €15m (£12.8m) this summer, which is seen as a cut-price amount compared to what the Italian giants were demanding in the past.

A host of other Premier League teams are also eyeing a move for the 20-year-old however, with Brighton, Newcastle United and Tottenham all mentioned in the report.

    Samuel Iling-Junior

The left-back/winger could be a great option for Everton in the summer window, coming in as a player who can make an immediate difference with his quality, but also acting as a long-term acquisition. Iling-Junior has been lauded as an "assist machine" by journalist Michele Neri, who said last year: "You can absolutely see shades of Rafael Leao when the AC Milan superstar was a bit younger.

"Of course he is certainly less impactful today than Leao is and has a long way to go to reach the Portuguese’s level. He is an assist machine, but he can also score, especially when his movements off the ball allows him to find space in the penalty area."

Iling-Junior can play as a left-back, in central midfield or in a more attacking role on the flank, which could appeal to Sean Dyche, and signing top young talent has to be the aim moving forward, especially when it could be for a cut down fee.

Pakistan domestic cricket likely to start with T20 Cup in September

Matches of a single tournament maybe limited to one venue to manage logistics

    Umar Farooq27-Jul-2020

Habib Bank Limited, the 2018 Quaid-e-Azam One-Day Cup winners•ESPNcricinfo Ltd

The PCB has made a principle decision to start the domestic season this year in the middle of the coronavirus pandemic under a strict biosecure environment. The season is likely to start in the last week of September with a national T20 Cup in Multan or Rawalpindi. The premier tournament Quaid-e-Azam Trophy will be hosted by Karachi all along. There will be a 40-man squad for each of the six association teams this year to counter the worst scenario of anyone testing positive for Covid-19.Since 1972, Pakistan hasn’t missed a single season of domestic cricket, though between 1953 and 1971, there were seasons (1955-56, 1965-66 and 1971-72) in which it wasn’t held for many reasons including two India-Pakistan wars. There were considerable doubts for the upcoming season as well due to the pandemic, with the country presently having nearly 275,000 cases. That led the government to announce a lockdown despite the upcoming festival of Eid, with all retail shops, markets, shopping malls and plazas to remain closed until August 5. The curve in the country has gone down in the last one month but the government remains cautioned with cases expected to take another peak by the end of July and early August, according to prime minister Imran Khan. The domestic season will eventually start with a delay, though of not more than a month. The calendar is being worked out to limit the matches of a single tournament to one venue to effectively manage the logistics between the hotel and the stadium. The PCB hasn’t officially released the details, but unofficially it has been confirmed that the T20 Cup will be the first tournament to start the season, aiming at the Pakistan Super League players’ draft in November to allow franchises to witness players. The national Under-19 tournament will also be played in the October-November window.ALSO READ: PCB chief Ehsan Mani wants to attract foreign talent in domestic cricketThe first-class season will be played in Karachi with a truncated schedule as teams previously had to travel inter-city. But in Karachi, which has over six venues, the gap between two games will be reduced. There are SOPs that are being chalked out adhering to the protocol being followed internationally. Players who test negative for Covid-19 will be allowed to enter the bubble; any player breaching the protocol will have to go through a quarantine period and face a penalty ranging from a fine to a ban from one or more games. All competitions are marked as being played under unprecedented circumstances with strict health and safety protocols. The SOPs will most likely mirror the international norms but a few will be customised on a duty to care basis. The playing conditions will broadly be the same, but as witnessed in the Test series between England and West Indies, bowlers will not be allowed to use saliva to shine the ball. Umpires, referees and scorers, who often went back home on normal days, will have to remain in the bubble alongside the teams in the hotels. The PCB had last month tried to bring its cricketers back to training but the idea was shot down amidst concerns of Covid-19. The senior Pakistan team, however, flew to England in advance ahead of their series to train in a biosecure bubble. A group has been undergoing conditioning camps and playing intra-squad matches to prepare for the Test series starting August 5.Amidst the coronavirus pandemic, the PCB has been in a bid to mitigate the impact on domestic cricketers, offering all the selected players annual contracts from August 2020. Otherwise, after extensive structural changes to the domestic game last season, there would have been a steep fall in the earnings of several cricketers. But this year, the board enhanced the value of contracts while introducing a new grade-based system of monthly retainers and match fees.

Slot could make dream first Liverpool signing who’s "just like Virgil"

da luck: Liverpool's season has fallen apart at the final stage, the last point of Jurgen Klopp's illustrious tenure, with high hopes in the Premier League, Europa League and FA Cup wilted.

da poker: There is still a sliver of hope that the Merseysiders will string together a late-stage purple patch but it hardly seems likely that Arsenal and Manchester City will suffer nosedives with just a few fixtures left to play this term.

Of course, the fact that Liverpool had soared into title-contending ascendancy at all bears testament to Klopp's elite tactical and interpersonal skills, having fallen by the wayside last year and missed out on Champions League football.

      Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp.

With Arne Slot arriving from Feyenoord to succeed the esteemed German, he will have a task on his hands in keeping Anfield at the forefront and could move to sign one of his current players to kickstart his incumbency.

      Liverpool could sign Slot favourite

Slot's high-pressing, electric-energy style of play will suit Liverpool supporters just fine, and while it doesn't differ wildly from Klopp's brand of football, there's no question that tweaking and tinkering is a prerequisite.

Klopp succeeded in making sweeping changes to the midfield last summer, clearing Anfield of the debris that had bogged down the 2022/23 campaign, but the wastefulness of the forwards and the fragilities of the backline have illuminated the urgency for fresh faces.

One such addition could arrive in the form of Slovak defender David Hancko, who has been on Liverpool's radar over the past year and has been a central part of Slot's system at Feyenoord.

Hancko is a left-footed centre-half with elite ball-playing and technical qualities that would make him a dream for Liverpool's team – especially considering he knows Slot's modus operandi perfectly already.

      Feyenoord defender David Hancko

The player's agent actually confirmed back in January that Liverpool hold an interest in the 26-year-old and had made contact, and while much has changed at Anfield since then, Slot's imminent appointment could see Hancko join as the first addition to the new era.

      David Hancko's style of play

Feyenoord signed Hancko from Sparta Prague on a four-year contract in 2022, arriving for a fee of around €6m (£5m). He had previously failed to make a significant impact in Italy with Fiorentina but put it all together to enjoy a stunning rise under Slot's wing.

Indeed, having completed 90 fixtures for Feyenoord, Hancko has scored ten goals and supplied eight assists for his teammates, instrumental in winning the Dutch Eredivisie title last season and the KNVB Cup this season – the equivalent of the FA Cup.

      David Hancko for Feyenoord.

As per FBref, Hancko ranks among the top 17% of central defenders across divisions similar to the Dutch Eredivisie for goals, the top 16% for assists, the top 15% for pass completion, the top 1% for shot-creating actions, progressive passes and progressive carries and the top 2% for successful take-ons per 90.

This basically means that Hancko is one of the most dynamic and enterprising defenders in Europe, creative and progressive both with and without the ball.

Moreover, the 6 foot 2 titan comes out on top in 61% of his 4.0 contested duels per game in the Dutch top flight, as per Sofascore, suggesting that he does indeed incorporate the full gamut into his playing style.

Having produced some masterful performances in the Eredivisie this season, Hancko might just be ready for a shot at the Premier League, replete with the full skill set needed to succeed.

How David Hancko would fit in at Liverpool

With such a robust style of play, strong in the tackle, inventive in possession and all the while maintaining a gloss in his overall play, confident and composed in possession, it's hard to believe that Hancko – who has been lauded as "quality" by data analyst Ben Mattinson – wouldn't stand a good chance of cementing a role of high importance on Merseyside.

His left-sided preference would see skipper Virgil van Dijk – who also has Eredivisie connections following a prior stint at Groningen – move over to his favoured right side, a spot that he has scarcely seen during the bulk of his Liverpool career, in a switch that could increase the fluency of Liverpool's backline.

      Virgil van Dijk for Liverpool

Hancko would evidently relish the chance to form such a partnership, after previously confessing his "love" for the towering skipper, while also describing potential similarities between the pair:

“I love Virgil van Dijk. I don’t want to compare myself with Virgil, but that invincible feeling he exudes was something I felt last season very strongly.

“Just like Virgil, I am not afraid of anyone. But that is different from not respecting my opponent.”

Andy Robertson, who is no doubt a Liverpool legend but can't seem to shake off his detractors this year, isn't performing with quite the same level of energy that has been a staple since he joined from Hull City for just £10m in 2017.

Robertson is still one of the most creative full-backs in Europe and with a force such as Hancko covering staggering stretches of ground and always pushing the play forward, he could find comfort in surging further upfield, bolstered by the Slovakia international's presence.

What's more, Hancko could even relieve Ibrahima Konate of his first-choice spot in the Liverpool first team, with the Frenchman under fire recently for his part at the epicentre of Liverpool's decline, with The Athletic's James Pearce even calling him "dreadful" during Liverpool's home loss against Crystal Palace in the Premier League.

      Ibrahima Konate after Atalanta defeat

The reporter also remarked that Konate was a "distant second best in the battle against Calvert-Lewin" during the damaging defeat against Everton in midweek – Hancko hasn't made a single error leading to a shot in the Eredivisie this season, whereas Konate is riddled with mistakes at the moment.

Discussing Konate's effort at Goodison Park, The Liverpool Echo's Ian Doyle branded him with a 3/10 match rating, writing: 'Nightmare first half for the Frenchman, who was bullied by Calvert-Lewin and got in the way to set up Everton opener. Instantly gave ball away at start of second half. Subbed.'

With Joel Matip recovering from an anterior cruciate ligament rupture and out of contract at the end of the season, Konate can't be trusted to serve as Van Dijk's unwavering defensive partner – not with just unrefined rising star Jarell Quansah to serve as understudy.

Hancko would tick a lot of boxes and he might just be the kind of multi-functional signing to increase Liverpool's chances of success at the start of a new chapter.
