Corberan axes Grant in 3 changes: Predicted West Brom lineup vs Boro

da mrbet: West Bromwich Albion will be glad that tonight’s encounter against Middlesbrough is happening this mid-week, seeing it as a perfect opportunity to bounce back straight after Saturday’s humbling Championship defeat away at Sheffield Wednesday.

da dobrowin: That was the first time Carlos Corberan’s Baggies had tasted the bitterness of a defeat in the second tier this season, as the usually dogged and staunch West Brom defence was regularly opened up by Danny Rohl’s men, leading to a shock 3-2 win in favour of the hosts.

Corberan would have been enraged with his side at the final whistle, which could lead to a number of changes taking place for tonight’s tricky showdown with Michael Carrick’s Boro, who are fresh off a 2-0 victory themselves against Stoke City.

Even still, the Hawthorns has been a fortress for West Brom so far this campaign, with zero goals conceded and zero losses registered from three games so far, which will give the West Midlands side an advantage after their confidence was dented in South Yorkshire.

Regardless of West Brom feeling more confident in front of their own masses, some changes could still take place, with Karlan Grant one figure who might be axed…

1 GK – Alex Palmer

West Brom’s usual number one in-between the sticks had a match to forget against Sheffield Wednesday, having to fish three strikes out of his net, but Alex Palmer is unlikely to be sacrificed for a different option tonight against Boro.

The 28-year-old has only conceded five goals all campaign, away from that rare off-day at Hillsborough, with three clean sheets picked up this season on his own patch.

2 RB – Darnell Furlong

Darnell Furlong didn’t cover himself in immense glory either away at the Owls, as his own goal in the first 45 minutes against Rohl’s buoyed-on hosts gifted Wednesday an early two-goal advantage.

Still, much like Palmer, Furlong hasn’t become a bad player overnight and is likely to be retained, having helped his side pick up a clean sheet and a win last match at the Hawthorns in a hard-fought 1-0 win over Plymouth Argyle.

3 CB – Kyle Bartley

Kyle Bartley will also likely remain in the heart of defence for tonight’s game back on home soil, having been everpresent under Corberan this season so far in the second tier.

That’s for good reason too, with Bartley standing out even in the 3-2 loss, with five clearances registered alongside successfully winning eight duels.

4 CB – Semi Ajayi

West Brom defender Semi Ajayi.

Semi Ajayi has been Bartley’s main partner in the centre-back spots this season, owing to the departure of Cedric Kipre, but also down to the fact the ex-Rotherham United man has been solid alongside his experienced teammate.

The Nigerian defender is confident playing out from the back, with 48 accurate passes averaged per Championship clash this campaign, whilst also winning 3.9 total duels on average to try and keep opposition attackers at bay.

5 LB – Torbjørn Heggem

Whilst Ajayi stepping up to the mark has made Kipre’s absence feel less noticeable, Torbjørn Heggem has struggled at points in the left-back spot, performing in the arguable shadow of the now departed Conor Townsend.

The 25-year-old full-back did look out of his depth at points away at Wednesday, with just one weak tackle registered, but he has shown signs of his promise down the left in other games away from this disappointing defeat.

In the 1-0 home win over Plymouth, the Nordic defender would only misplace two of his 34 passes, whilst also shining when rolling up his sleeves with three tackles won on top of four successful duels.

6 CDM – Jayson Molumby

Jayson Molumby has been out of the main XI recently due to injury setbacks, but could be thrust back into the lineup for today’s game at the expense of new recruit Uros Racic.

Racic struggled in South Yorkshire, with just 18 accurate passes registered before leaving the field of play, after playing a key role in West Brom beating Plymouth the match before by assisting an on-fire Josh Maja.

It could well be time for West Brom’s number eight to come back into the main team, therefore, if he can pass a late fitness test.

7 CDM – Alex Mowatt

The second change to the XI that lost at Wednesday feels like an obvious tweak, with Alex Mowatt dropped back into the first-team fold, after being demoted to the substitutes bench away at Wednesday owing to his own slight injury concern.

Corberan must have been cursing that decision – regardless of the condition of his star midfielder – with the former Leeds United man managing to get his team back on level terms at 2-2 after a top second half showing.

Ousmane Diakite will be the casualty here, who was hauled off at half-time at Hillsborough for Mowatt to then work his magic.

8 RM – Tom Fellows

Tom Fellows will retain his spot, despite all the changes in the holding midfield positions, with the homegrown Baggies product bright in spurts at Wednesday.

Despite only managing a poor 28 touches of the ball, Fellows would assist Maja’s header that gave the away side a way back into the contest, whilst also registering three efforts of his own on James Beadle’s goal.

9 CAM – John Swift

John Swift was also a nuisance for the Owls defence to contain, with most attacking moves on the day from the Baggies going through the ex-Reading man.

The 29-year-old attacking midfielder – who could have walked away from the West Midlands outfit this summer to their mid-week opponents – amassed a ridiculous 105 touches of the ball at Hillsborough, with four key passes also registered to try and unlock a tetchy Wednesday back four.

Also winning eight duels, Corberan will hope Swift can be instrumental in his side bouncing back with a win tonight over a tricky Boro team.

10 LM – Mikey Johnston

The third and final change to the XI that struggled away at Wednesday could see Mikey Johnston get his first start back at the promotion chasers, with an underperforming Karlan Grant dropped.

Johnston would fire home an mightily impressive seven goals last campaign when on loan at Corberan’s men – with his manager even labelling him as “special” in the process – and will be raring to reach those heights again, but is currently being kept out of the side by the former Huddersfield Town attacker.

His display against the Owls suggests a change could be required, with Grant only managing 19 touches of the ball on a quiet day at the office for the 27-year-old.

Newspaper shares multiple approaches from Chelsea to sign £67 million star

da imperador bet: A national newspaper has lifted the lid on Chelsea’s multiple approaches to sign a £67 million star quite recently, with BlueCo not exactly afraid to splash the cash on major signings for new head coach Enzo Maresca.

Chelsea spent around £200m on 13 summer signings

da bet vitoria: Maresca was well and truly backed ahead of his first full season in charge at Stamford Bridge, with Todd Boehly and Behdad Eghbali giving their green light for Chelsea to invest around £200 million on 13 new additions to the squad.

Chelsea already planning January exit for "absolute dream" summer signing

Todd Boehly, BlueCo and Behdad Eghbali will have the final say.

ByEmilio Galantini Sep 27, 2024

Joao Felix, Mike Penders, Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, Marc Guiu, Renato Veiga, Estevao Willian, Filip Jorgensen, Tosin Adarabioyo, Aaron Anselmino, Caleb Wiley, Omari Kellyman, Pedro Neto and Jadon Sancho all agreed moves to Chelsea before deadline day on August 30, with a couple making serious impressions already.

Sancho is off the mark with two assists in the Premier League, while Neto bagged his first Chelsea goal against Barrow in the EFL Cup earlier this week. While Felix is yet to start a game for Chelsea, he did score off the bench in his second debut for the club – which came in a 6-2 demolition of Wolves at Molineux.

Jorgensen joined the backlog of Chelsea keepers with a glowing reputation as well. The 22-year-old Dane spent the whole of 2023/2024 as Villarreal’s number one shot-stopper, and his performances did enough to impress Chelsea so much that they splashed nearly £21 million on his signing from the La Liga side.

Filip Jorgensen for Villarreal.

He put pen to paper on a long-term seven-year deal at Cobham, and Maresca suggested that Jorgensen could oust current number one Robert Sanchez if he performs better than the Spaniard in training.

“Even if you probably don’t believe me, I judge and I take the first XI depending on how they work every day,” said Maresca. “For all of them, if they are bad in training sessions and they don’t train with intensity, they are not going to play.

“And if they don’t play Sunday in the Premier League, and think they are going to play Thursday, but if from Sunday to Thursday they don’t train well, they are not going to play in the Premier League and they are not going to play on Thursday – because Chelsea is a demanding club.

“You need to work hard, to fight until the end to get your place and give 100 per cent. If you think that I am going to give you a chance without working hard, forget about that.”

Newspaper shares multiple Chelsea approaches to sign Maignan

However, according to Corriere dello Sport, Chelsea could’ve brought in an alternative.

AC Milan goalkeeper Mike Maignan.

Indeed, £67 million AC Milan keeper Mike Maignan was on their radar in the summer, as well as Jorgensen. Chelsea actually made contact over Maignan in 2023 as well, with Corriere explaining that Chelsea wanted him this year too.

The Italian newspaper share that Chelsea made multiple enquiries over signing Maignan, before they presumably settled on Jorgensen. The 29-year-old would’ve been quite the competition for Sanchez considering his form in the last three years, but his hefty price tag was probably a bit much for yet another shot-stopper.

Jayawardene for exploring third-umpire intervention in above-waist no-balls

Mumbai Indians head coach, who sits on ICC Cricket Committee, highlights controversial incident between Delhi Capitals and Rajasthan Royals

Nagraj Gollapudi27-Apr-20222:02

Jaffer: Calling players back was way out of line from Pant

Mumbai Indians head coach Mahela Jayawardene believes there should be a discussion on whether the third umpire should alert the on-field umpires for over-the-waist no-balls, but he didn’t condone the role of Delhi Capitals’ players and support staff in the controversy that took place during the final over of their game against Rajasthan Royals last week. Jayawardene is also a member of the ICC’s Cricket Committee, the panel that oversees the playing conditions in international cricket.”Probably, the umpires did get it wrong, but the rules say that you can’t go to the third umpire or check on those things,” Jayawardene said on The ICC Review. “It is something, I think, going forward we need to look at: whether [there should be] the option for the third umpire to come on the field, on to the main umpires and inform them that it’s a delivery you should check. But… the spirit of the game, and to see things moving forward, it’s never an option for any coach or any player to come on to the field.”We are given an opportunity during the strategic time-out to come out in IPL, and that should be the only time the coaches or anyone else should be allowed.”Under the current playing conditions, all foot-fault no-balls are anyway checked by the third umpire. The on-field umpires can check the height of a delivery if it has resulted in a dismissal, but the ball in question went for a six.Three members of the Capitals’ contingent – captain Rishabh Pant, assistant coach Pravin Amre and bowling allrounder Shardul Thakur – were penalised by the IPL for breaching the code of conduct. Pant was fined his entire match fee, as was Amre, who was also handed a one-match ban; Thakur received a 50% fine. Those penalties resulted after Pant asked Amre to walk on to the field to speak to the on-field umpires after the third delivery of the final over of Capitals’ chase. Chasing 222, Capitals needed 36 runs from the final over. Rovman Powell hit three consecutive sixes off the first three balls. The third ball, however, was a high full toss. Capitals would have got a free-hit had it been deemed a no-ball, with the equation in that case reading 17 to get from four deliveries. While Powell and his batting partner Kuldeep Yadav argued with the umpires, Pant gestured them to come off the ground. Eventually, Amre was sent in. Pant admitted he had got carried way in the “heat of the moment”, but believed it was a no-ball, and that the third umpire could have “interfered”.Pravin Amre was fined and handed a one-match ban for walking on to the field to speak to the umpires•BCCI

Jayawardene didn’t like what he saw. “It is disappointing to see that. You are stopping the game, and people are coming on to the field,” he said. “But I honestly believe it was just the emotions carrying away. It was just the last over, a couple of sixes were hit and there was probably an opportunity [for Capitals to chase down the target].”Former Australia allrounder Shane Watson, who is also an assistant coach at Capitals, differed with Pant and said the umpires’ word was final and binding. Capitals’ head coach Ricky Ponting was not present that day because he was in isolation following a positive Covid-19 test in his family.Jayawardene said he had told the Mumbai dressing room the same when the incident was discussed. “We saw it on TV,” he said. “Most of the guys were watching it together, and afterwards as well, we had a chat. We will probably react in the dugout, but [for us] it’s never an option to go onto the field. That’s not the way things should be, but I’m pretty sure Rishabh and Pravin would regret what happened.”And Rishabh in his interview rightly said that it was because of the emotions how it happened. We need to give the benefit of the doubt [to Pant] and move on.”It remains to be seen whether the ICC Cricket Committee will bring up the waist-high no-ball topic for discussion at its next meeting. The committee, which usually meets a few times a year, has BCCI’s top administrators sitting on it: Sourav Ganguly, who replaced Anil Kumble as the chairman, and Jay Shah, who was added last month as representative of Full Member boards. However, the IPL need not wait for the ICC to ratify such a change should it want to implement it. In 2021, the IPL playing conditions did away with the soft signal for disputed catches and took away the responsibility of checking short runs from the on-field umpires. International cricket has not made any such change.

Gutsy Jonny Bairstow century puts England back in the game

Batter shares fifty stands with Stokes, Foakes and Woakes to rebuild tourists’ innings from dire start

Jonny Bairstow celebrates his gutsy Test century•Getty Images

Jonny Bairstow started his day as the glue holding England together and he ended it with an unbeaten century that put his side firmly back in the game against West Indies in Antigua. If England’s hierarchy were to make an appraisal of their so-called red-ball reset before lunch, the result would have been an epic fail. Any review will of course come much later – and rightly so – but, given the criticism of the selection decisions taken in the aftermath of a dire Ashes drubbing, they could have done with a fresher start. Instead, it was a case of the more things change, the more things stay the same early on.Bairstow, whose retention was among their least contentious calls after he was England’s only centurion of that fateful campaign in Australia and scorer of a hundred in the warm-up fixture for this match, came in with the tourists teetering on 48 for 4 inside the first hour and a half. But he combined with fellow experienced hand Ben Stokes for a rebuilding partnership worth 67 for the fifth wicket and then put on 99 runs with old new kid Ben Foakes to raise England to a respectable score at stumps.Foakes’ recall as wicketkeeper-batter in place of Jos Buttler perhaps only raised eyebrows in that it had taken so long and after Andrew Strauss’s edict as interim managing director that he “get a decent run of things” he could afford to feel as comfortable as he looked through much of his innings. Having been in and out of the Test side sporadically since 2018, Foakes was among those given an opportunity on this tour to cement his place in the long term.He looked in fine touch from the off. He edged the second ball he faced through the slips for four but followed that with two more authoritative drives to the boundary in the same Kemar Roach over as he set out at better than a run-a-ball. Foakes struck five more fours before he was pinned back by a Jason Holder delivery that struck the knee roll in line with leg stump, his review turned down. But the day belonged to Bairstow, who crafted a gritty and intelligent innings on a dry, slow pitch that offered little to either side. He faced 127 balls for a well-earned fifty, brought up with a four off Veerasammy Permaul as he continued to deploy the cut to great effect any time there was width on offer. But he upped the tempo after that, scoring his next 50 off just 63 balls, raising his hundred by sweeping Kraigg Brathwaite to the boundary and celebrating with an elated roar and punch of the air. With the ball swinging in the morning session, Roach had bowled beautifully to claim two wickets, while Jayden Seales and Holder took one each – the latter without conceding a run from his five overs. Holder finally gave up a run, two in fact, off his 33rd ball to a Bairstow cut.Having won the toss, England captain Joe Root opted to bat first. Debutant opener Alex Lees scored off the fifth ball he faced, threading Roach through backward point for four. He only survived another three balls though, before he was rapped on the front knee roll by a full, straight Roach delivery which narrowly evaded the bat and struck in line with middle and off and, despite a hopeful review, Lees was sent on his way with just those four runs to his name.Zak Crawley had looked in decent form, driving Seales to the boundary twice in three balls. But then Joshua Da Silva took a stunner – diving low to his left as Crawley sent an inside edge off Seales that slipped past off stump into the keeper’s outstretched glove – and all of a sudden, England were 17 for 2 with barely 20 minutes gone.In ever-familiar territory with an innings resurrection riding on Root’s shoulders – this time at No. 3 in England’s revamped line-up – it was almost 23 for 3 when Root, on 9, slashed at a rising Roach delivery which then sailed through the fingers of Jermaine Blackwood at third slip. As the ball raced to the boundary, both sides were left to ponder the potential significance of the moment.Roach ensured it was a moot point, probably to Blackwood’s relief, as Root left the very next ball, a pinpoint in-ducker that clipped the top of off stump and England were, in fact, 27 for 3 and in a bad place.Dan Lawrence was reprieved when Blackwood missed a tough chance off Roach in the cordon again. But Blackwood eventually clung on to dismiss Lawrence, who reached for a Holder outswinger and sent a thick outside edge to second slip.Stokes and Bairstow ground through the second hour of the session, adding nine runs in 8.2 overs before lunch. After the break, Holder failed to react at second slip as Stokes, on 22, toe-ended Joseph very clearly in his direction, and Seales saw an edge off Stokes drop just short of John Campbell at slip immediately before conceding back-to-back fours in an eventful 40th over. Seales produced the perfect riposte on the last ball, a fuller-length delivery that swung in late to defeat Stokes’ attempted drive via an inside edge on to leg stump. After Foakes’ dismissal, Chris Woakes arrived to round out the ‘Stokes, Foakes, Woakes’ cult theme of the day and he shared an unbroken 54-run partnership with Bairstow, who ended the day 109 not out, to see England through without further loss.

Arsenal could now sign 153-goal striker with offer above £96k-per-week

da brdice: Arsenal may have not signed a striker in the transfer window, but a very enticing option for 2025 has now emerged this week.

Why Edu and Arteta didn't sign a striker for Arsenal this summer

da 888casino: The north Londoners concluded their summer business with major signings for Mikel Arteta, as David Raya, Riccardo Calafiori, Mikel Merino, Neto and Raheem Sterling all joined for around £91 million in total.

Arsenal gifted injury boost with £265k-per-week star in line to play Spurs

The north London derby looms this weekend.

ByEmilio Galantini Sep 12, 2024

Raya's £27 million move from Brentford was a formality, with the keeper initially joining on loan last summer, but there was an obligation to buy clause inserted into the deal. Arteta brought in both Merino and Calafiori to strengthen Arsenal's left-side, while Neto and Sterling both made last-gasp moves to Arsenal on deadline day.

Sterling could make his Arsenal debut in a false-nine role against Tottenham, but Merino will miss the next two months for Arsenal after fracturing his shoulder in training.

Arsenal are waiting to find out whether Calafiori will be available this weekend, after the defender suffered a calf injury in a freak collision with Ousmane Dembele on international duty with Italy.

In an alternate universe, Arteta would have a world-class new striker to call upon for their looming North London Derby, but Edu Gaspar and the club's recruitment team couldn't quite get one over the line.

Arsenal did make an offer to sign Benjamin Sesko from RB Leipzig, but the Slovenian ultimately snubbed their advances and chose to remain in the Bundesliga, until next summer at least.

Meanwhile, it is believed Arteta rejected the chance to move for Ivan Toney, before the Englishman elected to make a lucrative move to Saudi Arabia, where he is now pocketing around £330,000-per-week at Pro League side Al-Ahli.

Victor Osimhen was also sporadically linked with a move to Arsenal, but that didn't come to fruition, with the 25-year-old instead forced to accept a shock loan move to Galatasaray.

For the rest of 2024/2025, Arteta will have Kai Havertz and Gabriel Jesus as his main strikers to call upon, not to mention Sterling, who can play in that position when required.

Arsenal could sign Jonathan David with an offer above £96,000-per-week

According to Tutto Juve, a very astute option for next year could come in the form of Lille star Jonathan David, who is out of contract at the end of this season and allowed to negotiate a pre-contract in January – ahead of a free move next summer.

Canadian striker Jonathan David

It is believed Arsenal could sign David with an offer of above £96,000-per-week, which comes as quite a temptation given just how prolific the Canada international has been these last few years.

The 24-year-old boasts a career total of 153 goals for club and country combined, so the prospect of signing David on a free will put a host of top clubs on alert. Tutto Juve write that Arsenal are among the frontrunners for his signature, alongside rivals Spurs and Newcastle United.
