Rory Burns seals Surrey's glory in Championship-sealing romp at Micky Stewart Oval

Yorkshire overwhelmed by ten wickets as rivals claim 21st county title

Surrey County Cricket Club, County Champions once more. A second title in four years, a fourth in the 2000s, a 21st in their long and storied history, was claimed in emphatic fashion with victory over Yorkshire by ten wickets. This eighth victory out of 13 in the 2022 season was in parts a microcosm of their overall campaign: everyone pulling their weight with runs and wickets shared around, and the odd sizeable contribution from the likes of Ollie Pope with 136, and Tom Lawes and Dan Worrall, who led the way with four wickets in the first and second innings respectively.Victory by an innings looked on the cards when Yorkshire resumed day three on 89 for two in their follow-on innings, but the wait for victory, confirmed at 2.35pm, only served to underline the professional nature of an outfit who, in a schedule like no other, have called on 22 players this season without looking poorer for it. For a head coach in his maiden season, Gareth Batty deserves immense credit for ensuring all were able to fit in and excel without losing their sense of selves.Winning titles at home is always preferable, though doing so a round early – with a day to spare – meant the Division One trophy was still locked away at Lord’s. It will be back in their possession at the end of their final fixture against Lancashire up at Emirates Old Trafford, and will be presented by their former chair Richard Thompson, no less, in his new role at the ECB.That game may no longer have any consequence, but don’t call it a dead rubber. Surrey still have an unbeaten record to preserve.Yet, as odd as it may sound, no one seemed to miss the golden goblet here. This last home game of the summer was already a week of celebration. The ground was renamed The Micky Stewart Oval to honour the legend following his 90th birthday, and he was awarded the keys to the ground at tea on day two. During the innings break, before the winning runs were sought, news of Hampshire’s 77-run defeat to Kent filtered through to draw more through the gates, some of whom only arrived after Burns, fittingly, had smashed the final runs through midwicket to end the chase in 16 minutes and leave him with a rather spectacular 30 not out off 16. Why the rush, Rory? “I was getting thirsty,” he joked.By 2.49pm, Surrey players and coaching staff had re-emerged onto the ground, beers in hand, to salute the crowd. There’s a small matter of the team’s end-of-season dinner tonight, too. Trophy or not, they’ll be just fine.Jordan Clark was a key contributor to Surrey’s title•Getty Images for Surrey CCC

This was always going to be more Surrey’s day than Yorkshire’s as the latter returned in their second innings on 89 for two, still trailing by 65. Quite how emphatically so was dependent on the goings-on at The Ageas Bowl, where second-place Hampshire, already four-down in their chase, had 269 remaining to secure an unlikely win over Kent. Nevertheless, the best of starts came here when a clerical bowling change brought the first of the final eight wickets needed.Cameron Steel opened proceedings from the Vauxhall End in order to switch Worrall to the Pavilion End after the seamer had bowled the final over of day two. Steel’s final delivery – a googly – snuck through Tom Kohler-Cadmore’s gate, just as it did for Ben Mike’s in the first innings. The only difference was the lack of bounce which drastically reduced Kohler-Cadmore’s chances of keeping it out. With that we returned to the usual opening duo of Kemar Roach and Worrall, and the former should have had Adam Lyth for 37 only for Ryan Patel to fail to scoop up a low chance diving to his right from third slip. Roach channeled his anger to maintain a probing line to the left-hander and, 36 deliveries later, removed him with arguably the best ball of the morning: forcing the left-hander to play in front of middle-and-leg, then nipping the ball off the seam to give Patel a far simpler chance with which to make amends. It was the second breakthrough in three balls, after Clark finished the over before by removing Will Fraine with a bit of extra lift that surprised the right-hander into playing onto his own stumps. With that, Clark’s season tally moved to 30 which, along with his 467 runs at 51.88, underlines how invaluable he has been to the balance of this XI since his arrival from Lancashire in 2018. Fittingly, he was awarded his county cap at the lunch interval.Clark might have ticked over to 31 by then. With Yorkshire trailing by 30, skipper Jonny Tattersall, top-scorer in the first innings with an unbeaten 45, was put down on three off Clark. Again, Patel was the slip fielder though the legitimacy of the catch would have probably been called into question given how low it arrived.Tattersall went on to a dogged 21 but had the misfortune of being caught down the leg side off a delivery from Jamie Overton that looked like being too wide for any trouble. He’d at least got his team within four runs of Surrey’s total, a deficit which was wiped with singles before Jordan Thompson square-drove Overton gloriously through backward point to put Yorkshire four ahead. That lead was 17 (for six) by the end of the first session, at which point the more cynical sorts began fearing a tricky fourth-innings chase, even as an eighth-wicket stand of 63 between James Vince and James Fuller began to chip away at the 169 still needed for victory further down south. Two overs after the restart, Thompson had a bruise and a new helmet after Overton cranked one up from the Pavilion End to strike him on the grille via his right forearm. And, to add insult to injury, he was off four deliveries later when one from Worrall kept low to pin him on the shin in front of off stump. At the same time, Vince holed out to deep midwicket for 73. With that, those in the stands could refocus their attention on what was in front of them.A brisk 22 from five overs was nipped in the bud when Dom Bess was caught down the leg side off Roach for a diligent 43, before Mike’s brisk 14 was ended by a nip-backer from Worrall with the lead at 52. And when Worrall bowled the ever-retreating Ben Coad to give himself four for 61, Surrey’s task was simple – 55 for the win. And then, when Kent took the last Hampshire wicket to confirm a 77-run win during the innings break, confirmation this 55 would be for the Championship. The first over brought 16 of them: Burns guiding two fours to third man between second and third slip, before an imperious clip off the hips through square leg. A botched charge led to four byes in between. A carnival atmosphere ensued in south London.Among the cheers for boundaries was the odd chuckle, notably when Tattersall, having given up keeping duties to Kohler-Cadmore, started with a head-high full toss that Patel trimmed for four of his own (six with the no-ball). A heartier whoop followed when Burns pulled out a perfect reverse sweep for boundary No.5, before the sixth confirmed the inevitable.

Murillo 2.0: Nottingham Forest can rival Wood by signing £25m sensation

da betano casino: Nottingham Forest have made an extraordinary start to the season. Nuno Espirito Santo has guided his side to a remarkable fifth in the Premier League at the November international break, with 19 points to their name. They are outside of a top four spot on goal difference.

da bet esporte: Impressively, the men in Garibaldi Red have lost just two games all season. Both of those defeats have come at the City Ground, losing to Fulham 1-0 in September and, most recently, suffering a 3-1 defeat against Newcastle United.

Of their five wins so far, the three points they got at Anfield was certainly the most impressive, especially with Liverpool sitting top of the table.

There have been several standout players for Forest this season, but perhaps none more so than Chris Wood.

Wood’s stats in 2024/25

It has been a superb campaign so far for experienced Forest centre-forward Wood. The 32-year-old has already scored eight goals this term, having played just 11 games. He is just six goals away from equalling his best-ever Premier League season, with a maximum of 27 games to go.

There is currently just one player who has scored more goals than Wood this season in the top flight of English football. Unsurprisingly, that man is Erling Haaland, who has found the back of the net 12 times.

Stats from Premier League

Wood’s best month this season was October. The New Zealand international scored four of his eight goals during that period, which was enough to earn him the Premier League’s Player of the Month award. Nuno was the recipient of the Manager of the Month for October, too.

As per FBref, the striker is ninth in the list across Europe’s big five leagues when it comes to the biggest overachievement of expected goals. Indeed, his tally for that particular metric is just 4.5xG, meaning he has a difference of 3.5 between his expedited goals and his actual goals scored. He is simply deadly in front of goal.

It has been an incredible start to the season for Wood and his side. However, Forest might well look to spur him on further by strengthening the striker department and adding competition to continue bringing the best out of their talisman this season.

Nottingham Forest's search for a striker

The player in question here is Brazilian striker Yuri Alberto. According to a report from Trivela earlier this week, a move for the striker ‘has been speculated. by the Midlands side. The report suggests that Forest would have to pay £25m to sign one of the most in-form strikers in Brazilian football.

Corinthians forward Yuri Alberto.

It is fair to say that the striker has been on fire this season for his side, Corinthians. In 53 games in all competitions, the Brazil international has scored 26 goals and has six assists to his name.

That includes an impressive nine goals in ten games in the Copa Libertadores.

It certainly seems like the striker could keep Wood on his toes. He clearly knows where the back of the net is, and was described as a “complete forward” by football talent scout Jacek Kulig. He averages 0.6 goals and assists per game at this stage, slightly less than Forest’s experienced number 11, who averages 0.72.

The Midlands club have already brought players into the club from Corinthians in recent seasons. Last summer, they signed defender Murillo for £15m, and this summer signed 6 foot 8 goalkeeper Carlos Miguel for £3.4m. The centre-back, in particular, has been a great success in Garibaldi Red so far and has seen his value skyrocket in the process.

Given those past negotiations, it might not be too difficult of a deal to complete.

This deal could be a very smart move from Forest. Not only would they be signing a proven goalscorer who can provide real competition to Wood, but adding to the talented crop of Brazilian players – such as Murillo – at the club would also represent a coup for the present and future, especially if they can sell him for healthy profit in the years to come.

For just £25m, it certainly seems as though Yuri Alberto would be an excellent addition to a Forest squad who are performing so well, and could get their biggest stars to raise their levels even more.

Edu simply must offload Nottingham Forest dud who earns more than Murillo

Nottingham Forest’s big-money signing has been a huge flop during his time at the City Ground.

Durham have signed Ollie Robinson, the Kent wicketkeeper-batter, on loan for the T20 Blast to help manage an availability crisis.Robinson, 23, played four T20 games for Kent in their title-winning 2021 season and made 103 runs with a strike rate of 139.18 across his four innings but was deemed surplus to requirement for the start of their Blast season, following Sam Billings’ return from the IPL.He is available for Durham in their first T20 fixture on Thursday, against Leicestershire at Grace Road but will return to Kent for their two Championship games during the Blast’s group stages and can be recalled at any time.Related

Durham were without Sean Dickson (hamstring) and David Bedingham (back) during their Championship defeat against Middlesex at Lord’s last week and have lost three players to England’s squad for the first two Tests against New Zealand in Alex Lees, Ben Stokes and Matthew Potts.”Following a few injuries and England selection affecting our squad, we are excited to have Ollie for our Vitality Blast campaign,” Marcus North, Durham’s director of cricket, said. “He is an exciting young talent who will offer us multiple skill options.””Ollie is a really talented young player and both he and Kent will benefit from ‘Robbo’ experiencing increased playing time during the Vitality Blast,” Paul Downton, Kent’s director of cricket, added. “We wish him well at Durham and look forward to welcoming him back into the squad for our next Championship fixture.”Durham finished seventh out of nine in the North Group of the Blast in 2021. They have recruited Ashton Turner, who has been warming up by playing for their second XI, as captain for 2022.Elsewhere, Northamptonshire will use Matthew Kelly – the Australian seam-bowling allrounder who initially signed for the early stages of the County Championship season – as cover for Jimmy Neesham in their opening Blast fixtures due to Neesham’s IPL commitments, while Leicestershire have confirmed that Hamish Rutherford will replace Rahmanullah Gurbaz, as revealed by ESPNcricinfo.

Man Utd ready to resume talks with "smart" UCL winner to replace Ten Hag

da realbet: As the pressure continues to increase on Erik ten Hag to turn things around at Manchester United, INEOS are reportedly ready to resume talks with an out of work manager who’s already a Champions League winner.

Ten Hag under pressure

da lvbet: Before Sir Jim Ratcliffe and Dan Ashworth steered the Red Devils in the right direction when it comes to transfer strategy, it could have been argued that Ten Hag had simply been the victim of just how poorly Manchester United were being run off the pitch. That’s not an excuse that the Dutchman can fall back on after the summer transfer window, however.

Man Utd plotting swoop for new Garnacho-esque South American prospect

United could be about to add another exciting talent to their ranks.

ByBrett Worthington Oct 4, 2024

On paper, Manchester United signed several improvements. They strengthened their backline with Matthijs de Ligt, Noussair Mazraoui and one for the future in Leny Yoro. They reinforced their attacking options with Joshua Zirkzee and most importantly, they found their replacement for the struggling Casemiro in the form of Manuel Ugarte. Yet, still, Ten Hag’s side have failed to find their form.

Their latest result to forget came in the Europa League, when they were forced to rely on Harry Maguire’s late goal to level things up against Porto in a 3-3 draw, having initially taken a 2-0 lead.

Without a win in four games, pressure is growing on Ten Hag, leading to names such as Eddie Howe being linked with what could soon be a vacant position. Before the Newcastle boss, however, the Red Devils could turn towards a Champions League winner.

According to Sam Cunningham of Inews, INEOS are ready to resume talks with Thomas Tuchel if they decide to sack Ten Hag this season. The German was reportedly in negotiations over the role in the summer before things ultimately broke down and United stuck with Ten Hag. Now though, he could finally be on his way.

"Smart" Tuchel more proven than Ten Hag

After three seasons at the helm, Manchester United don’t look like a side who are set to progress under Ten Hag and with Tuchel available, INEOS would be wise to make their move. Tuchel has a plethora of experience, winning the Champions League during his time at Chelsea, which looks like an incredible achievement, given the undoubted chaos in the boardroom during his tenure.

What’s more, although not famed for his entertaining style of play, has consistently earned results throughout his managerial career, be that at Stamford Bridge, Bayern Munich or Paris Saint-Germain. Dubbed “smart, modern, adventurous coach” in the past by New York Times’ Rory Smith, Tuchel may well be the manager that Manchester United so desperately need to take charge of a new era.

If it is to be the former Chelsea boss, he’ll be hoping to avoid following in Jose Mourinho’s footsteps and instead help steer what is still a sinking ship back in the right direction on the pitch. With the likes of Ashworth working behind him too, Tuchel could have the perfect environment for success if INEOS finally pull the trigger.

BOM INÍCIO DO CEARÁ

VOZÃO ABRE A CONTAGEM

CEARÁ FECHA A CONTA

Mohammad Hasnain cleared to bowl internationally again

Pakistan quick’s elbow extension has come down from the earlier flex of 17-24 degrees to 12-13 degrees

Mohammad Hasnain has sent down 5000 balls and practised shadow bowling in a bid to remodel his action•PCB

Mohammad Hasnain has been cleared to bowl internationally again. The verdict was based on an assessment of his action, where he bowled three overs under supervision, and it was revealed that his elbow extension has dropped within the permissible limit – it has come down from the earlier flex of 17-24 degrees to 12-13 degrees.Hasnain, reported for a faulty action in January this year during the BBL, where he represented Sydney Thunder, and suspended from bowling in international cricket the following month, is now eligible to resume his international career. During the suspension, Hasnain was eligible to bowl in Pakistan’s domestic circuit, but the PCB had decided against it. Instead, he had to focus on tweaking his action. After considering sending Hasnain to an independent consultant, the PCB decided to assign its high-performance coach, Umar Rasheed, to work with him at Lahore’s High-Performance Centre. His tests took place at Lahore University of Management Sciences, an ICC-accredited testing laboratory on January 21. The test report, which was reviewed and verified by Cricket Australia’s independent expert, found his bowling action to be illegal.Related

Hasnain undergoes bowling test in bid to revive career

An early assessment had found that Hasnain was rotating his arm to swing the ball. This process was inconsistent and caused a jerk. To bowl quicker deliveries, his landing was wild, making his alignment go off. It is understood that the structure of his new bowling action remains the same though his wrist, arm rotation and landing have been tweaked allowing him to bowl with consistent and repeatable action. Rasheed helped rework his alignment, for which Hasnain delivered over 5000 balls and practised shadow bowling. Before Hasnain was suspended, he had been in and around Pakistan’s white-ball squads and had a T20I hat-trick to his name. He had impressed in his short stint at the BBL after being recruited as a replacement for English quick Saqib Mahmood. He had a successful debut, taking 3 for 20 in Thunder’s 28-run win over Adelaide Strikers.Hasnain was among the few young fast bowlers the PCB had invested in after the international appearances for Mohammad Amir and Wahab Riaz went became less and less frequent. He was also among a select few in Pakistan who hit the 145kph mark consistently. Whether he is able to retain the pace after remedial work is to be seen.He hasn’t played competitive cricket since the suspension. However, Rasheed is certain that his action is repeatable and that he is stronger than ever.
