Newcastle flop has seen his value soar after being sold by Rafa Benitez

Newcastle United have enjoyed a period of success under current boss Eddie Howe, with their achievements in recent time nothing short of remarkable after a turbulent few years which saw the club drop into the Championship.

Since Howe's appointment in 2021, he's dragged the Magpies away from potential relegation and transformed the side, resulting in a fourth-placed Premier League finish last season.

The club also reached the Carabao Cup final last season, with the Tynesiders falling at the final hurdle after a 2-0 defeat to Manchester United at Wembley.

Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe.

The club's finish in the Premier League's top four allowed them to qualify for the Champions League for the first time in 20 years – unthinkable when Howe took over with the Magpies looking perilously close to relegation back to the second tier.

During this time period, the club has been backed heavily after the takeover by the Saudi Public Investment Fund (PIF) with players such as Bruno Guimaraes and Sandro Tonali joining for fees over £30m. However, the club may have missed a trick by selling a midfielder in 2018, with a former Magpie now worth over three times the price they sold him for.

Mikel Merino's stats at Newcastle United

Mikel Merino joined the Magpies back in 2017 for £7m from German side Borussia Dortmund – with the club having high hopes for the midfielder.

However, the deal for Merino at St James' Park was unsuccessful, with the Spaniard only spending one season in the North East – making 25 appearances in all competitions.

mikel-merino-newcastle-united-transfer-opinion-premier-league

The midfielder only scored once for the Magpies, with his solitary goal coming in the 1-0 top-flight victory against Crystal Palace – a goal that would see the Magpies jump off the bottom of the table.

Merino subsequently left Newcastle, then managed by Rafa Benitez, in the summer of 2018, joining Real Sociedad in his homeland for a fee in the region of £10m – a deal that would become a potential bargain for the Spanish side.

Mikel Merino's stats since leaving Newcastle

Since leaving the Magpies in 2018, Merino has gone on to make a name for himself in Spain, with multiple sides around Europe having been interested in signing the now 27-year-old of late – as per reports back in 2022.

Where Are They Now

Your star player or biggest flop has left the club but what are they doing in the present day? This article is part of Football FanCast's Where Are They Now series.

Merino's excelled at Sociedad, making 230 appearances, scoring 24 times whilst assisting a further 30 for his teammates. The midfielder's transformation is remarkable, with fellow Sociedad player – and on-loan Arsenal man – Kieran Tierney branding the Spaniard as "world-class".

The former Magpie now has a market value of €40m (£34m), according to CIES Football Observatory, an increase of 240% compared to the fee that the club sold him for just under six years ago.

Real Sociedad midfielder Mikel Merino in match action.

No Newcastle fan – nor likely Benitez – would've predicted Merino's rapid rise to becoming one of Europe's most underrated midfielders given his unsuccessful stint at St James' Park. However, given his success in Spain, questions could be asked as to why the club sold him so early on in his career at the club, with the midfielder needing time to adapt to the demands of the Premier League.

Had they kept hold of the 27-year-old, the Magpies' midfield would be up there with some of the best in England's top flight. Unfortunately for Newcastle, it's a case of one that got away – with the club pulling the trigger on his time at the club too early.

Revealed: What Jude Bellingham plans to tell UEFA investigation about lewd gesture as England star seeks to avoid Euro 2024 ban

England's Jude Bellingham reportedly plans to stick by his claim that his Slovakia goal celebration was an in-joke when UEFA quiz him on the matter.

Bellingham scores against SlovakiaMakes lewd gesture in celebrationUEFA to quiz England man on matterWHAT HAPPENED?

Bellingham scored a stunning overhead kick to take England's last-16 Euro 2024 tie with Slovakia into extra-time – a game they eventually won 2-1. In his celebration, the 21-year-old appeared to make a lewd gesture towards Slovakia's bench, but the Real Madrid star said it was an "inside joke" directed at his friends attending the match. UEFA decided to pursue this matter further, with the governing body looking into whether Bellingham violated the rules of "decent conduct". Now, The Telegraph states the Three Lions ace will not deviate from his stance when questioned by UEFA.

After the match, Bellingham tweeted: "🥱❌- An inside joke gesture towards some close friends who were at the game. Nothing but respect for how that Slovakia team played tonight (Sunday).🤝🏽"

THE BIGGER PICTURE

Crucially for England, the report adds Bellingham is 'not expected' to receive a suspension – if indeed he is punished at all. Slovakia have reportedly not complained to UEFA about the gesture and have not commented on the matter. That means the ex-Borussia Dortmund player may be free to play against Switzerland in England's quarter-final Euro 2024 tie on Saturday.

Spain threatens to BOYCOTT 2026 World Cup if Israel are allowed to participate as qualifying continues

Spain have reportedly threatened to boycott the 2026 World Cup if Israel qualify. After a United Nations commission of inquiry stated that Israel had committed genocide against Palestinians in Gaza this week, Spanish government officials say they will "assess" the situation if Ran Ben-Shimon's team make it to next year's tournament in North America.

Spain consider major step

Patxi Lopez, the spokesperson for the Spanish Socialist Workers' Party, admitted they are considering removing their national team from next year's competition. Israel are third in their UEFA qualifying group and have not qualified for a World Cup since 1970. But next year's expanded 48-team format, which is up from 32 nations, gives them a chance to end that barren run. Incidentally, a new UN report says there are reasonable grounds to conclude that Israel are currently committing a genocide in Gaza.

AdvertisementAFPSpanish government group will 'not remain silent' over Israel

Lopez said, via RMC Sport: "We will assess the situation at the right time. What we want is for people to realize that if Israeli teams cannot take part in sporting events or Eurovision, some are starting to open their eyes. Because ours are wide open and do not tolerate what they see, which is why we cannot and will not remain silent."

What will FIFA say about this?

FIFA tends to take a firm stance against government intervention in football, and any action is likely to be met with strong consequences. Spain previously threatened to withdraw from Eurovision if Israel took part, and in recent weeks, the prestigious Vuelta a España cycling event was cut short due to pro-Palestine protestors opposing the participation of the Israel-Premier Tech team.  Whether Spain would go as far as to boycott a World Cup remains to be seen.

AFPWhat next for Israel in their bid to reach the 2026 World Cup?

Israel are currently level on points in their World Cup qualifying group with Italy but have played a game more. Norway lead Group I with 15 points from a possible 15, with Italy and Israel six points back. Israel's next match is away to Norway on October 11, before traveling to Italy three days later.

KL Rahul and Shreyas Iyer hit fifties as India overpower New Zealand

Williamson, Taylor, Munro fifties in vain as India hunt down 204 to secure a 1-0 lead

The Report by Deivarayan Muthu24-Jan-2020
The last time India and New Zealand met, in the World Cup semi-final last year, Martin Guptill pulled off a memorable direct hit to run MS Dhoni out and seal India’s fate. Six months on, in the T20I series opener against India at Eden Park, he pulled off a similarly memorable diving catch at deep midwicket to dismiss a well-set Virat Kohli for a 32-ball 45 in a chase of 204. On the night, though, it wasn’t enough as Shreyas Iyer finished the chase off in uber-cool fashion, with an over to spare, and put India 1-0 ahead in the five-match T20I series. When Iyer had joined Manish Pandey, who had been picked ahead of a fit-again Rishabh Pant, India still needed 62 off 40 balls. Iyer took charge, making 48 in the unbroken stand with Pandey, and pressed on to a 26-ball half-century, thrilling the sea of blue in the stands. After New Zealand had been asked to bat earlier in the evening, Kane Williamson and Ross Taylor reeled off quicker fifties – off 25 balls each – and Colin Munro hit a relatively sedate half-century. When India batted, KL Rahul cracked a 27-ball 56 and Kohli almost got to the mark too, but it was Iyer’s contribution that proved decisive in a match that produced an aggregate of 407 for 9.Munro finds a way despite India’s well-laid plans
Munro thrives on width and if he’s denied that he struggles to put the ball away. Most teams have figured that out and try to cramp him for room. India followed a similar template against the left-handed opener on Friday and in addition to attacking his body, they routinely took pace off the ball and challenged him to clear the longish leg-side boundaries. After awkwardly dealing with a surfeit of short balls, Munro flitted around the crease, manufactured room for himself, and messed with the lines and lengths of India’s attack. In the process, he opened up gaps on the off side and scored 23 of his 59 runs in the arc between third man and mid-off. He clouted Shardul Thakur over mid-off for six and then punched allrounder Shivam Dube through the same region for four. He contributed 44 in an 80-run opening stand with Guptill off 47 balls, before Dube tricked Guptill with a 119kph cutter and had him holing out in the eighth over. Four overs later, Thakur finally executed the plan and got rid of Munro with the knuckle ball. The Williamson-Taylor bashIn 2018, Simon Doull had questioned Williamson’s place in New Zealand T20I set up and on the eve of the series opener against India, his captaincy was questioned following the 3-0 shellacking across the Tasman, albeit in the longest format. And not too long ago, Taylor had been dropped from the New Zealand T20I side. But the two batsmen put on a breathtaking display of ball-striking during a 61-run fourth-wicket stand that came off a mere 34 balls.Kane Williamson goes for the big one•Getty ImagesWilliamson was particularly brutal on Thakur, smashing him for back-to-back slogged sixes in the 12th over. Yuzvendra Chahal, who had been selected ahead of Kuldeep Yadav as New Zealand had nine right-handers in their line-up, wasn’t spared either. Williamson rearranged the legspinner’s figures in his last over when he nailed him for three fours in four balls. After Williamson eventually fell to Chahal, Taylor took charge of the innings and finished it in grand fashion. He got his trademark down-on-one-knee hockey swipe going and even dug deep into his reserves, dabbing Jadeja from the stumps to the third-man boundary with the back of his bat.Just when New Zealand seemed like they could wind up with 220, Jasprit Bumrah gave up just 16 runs in his last two overs while picking up the wicket of Tim Seifert.Rahul and Iyer to the foreAfter a tidy shift behind the stumps, Rahul extended his rich form in front of it, with a 23-ball half-century. Although left-arm spinner Mitchell Santner found turn with the new ball and had Rohit Sharma sending a catch to backward point for 7, Rahul regularly found the boundary, ensuring India were always in touch with the asking rate. After a boundary-less first over, India struck at least one boundary in the next eight overs. New Zealand could have had Rahul on 27 had they not missed two run-out chances off one ball in the sixth over. Soon after, Ish Sodhi reprieved Kohli on 33 at third man. In the next over, however, Southee completed a well-judged catch to remove Rahul. Then, Guptill made a difficult catch appear ridiculously easy as New Zealand seemed to be on to something. However, Iyer took on Southee’s length balls and debutant Hamish Bennett’s shorter deliveries to dash New Zealand’s hopes. In all, he looted 40 off 17 balls from the two seamers. At the other end, Pandey played sensibility and simply passed the strike over to his partner. Fittingly, it was Iyer who sealed it, when he monstered Southee over midwicket for six.

Unai Emery takes big £38m Nicolo Zaniolo transfer decision at Aston Villa

Aston Villa have boxed themselves into something of a corner when it comes to the Premier League's Profit and Sustainability Rules, with the club forced to at least contemplate the sale of a big-name first-team player.

Jacob Ramsey has been attracting interest from Premier League rivals Newcastle United and Tottenham Hotspur, and German giants Bayern Munich are keen too. In their current situation, Villa have to at least consider any proposals.

Jacob Ramsey for Aston Villa

There's also a possibility that the PSR will play a key role as Villa assess the future of Nicolo Zaniolo. The Italian arrived on loan from Turkish club Galatasaray with a conditional obligation to buy worth £38m when including all initial loan fees and add ons, but that would be a particularly significant outlay in the current circumstances.

Villa make Zaniolo decision

According to Turkish outlet Aksam, Villa have already decided not to sign Zaniolo permanently. Galatasaray were hopeful of a "huge" windfall from his exit, but a long-term switch could now "officially" be ruled out. The Super Lig club will have to be content instead with their €5m (£4.3m) loan fee from Villa as they aim instead to sell him to one of the Serie A sides who have been showing an interest.

The report adds that Zaniolo is regarded as a "disappointment" behind the scenes in the Midlands, with the 24-year-old unable to meet expectations. As such, with three and a half months of the season still remaining, he's "preparing to leave" come the summer as both parties look to move on.

Zaniolo may no longer be "very happy" at Villa

Emery has used Zaniolo in as many as six different roles since his arrival, and while the positive spin on that would be that he's an invaluably versatile player, the cynic would argue that he hasn't performed well enough to nail down any specific spot.

In all, he's played 27 games in claret and blue, with 16 of those coming in the Premier League. Emery has handed him seven starts and named him on the bench 13 times in the top flight, opting not to use him at all on four occasions.

Zaniolo was picked in the XI for half of Villa's Europa Conference League games, but hasn't made it for any of their four domestic cup matches this season, so it's hard to pinpoint exactly where he stands in the squad.

What's clear is that he's regressed in recent times – he enjoyed a good run in the autumn with seven starts from 10 between 21 September and 5 November, but he hasn't begun a game since the 1-1 draw with Zrinjski in the final Conference League group game, when he scored his first goal for the club.

After he hit his second to salvage a 1-1 draw with Sheffield United in stoppage-time later that month, he said he was "very happy" at Villa Park, but that stance may have changed in the weeks since.

Pollard and Pooran fifties power Knight Riders to fifth straight win

Patriots have lost six of their last eight matches and are in fifth position, while Knight Riders have extended their lead at the top

ESPNcricinfo staff02-Sep-2025Kieron Pollard and Nicholas Pooran’s whirlwind half-centuries helped Trinbago Knight Riders extend their dominance at the top of the points table with a 12-run win against St Kitts and Nevis Patriots in Tarouba on Monday.Sent in, Knight Riders found themselves in early trouble, reduced to 27 for 2 in the fifth over and then 78 for 3 in the 11th. But Pollard and Pooran launched a massive counterattack, adding 90 runs in 8.1 overs to take them to 179 for 6. Patriots started the chase strongly, but soon withered away with seamer Nathan Edward picking up 3 for 30 in 3.2 overs and Mohammad Amir returning 2 for 29.

This was Knight Riders’ fifth straight win at CPL 2025, making it six out of seven victories for them so far this season. Patriots, meanwhile, suffered their third successive loss. They have now lost six of their last seven matches and are fifth on the points table.Knight Riders lost Colin Munro and Alex Hales inside the powerplay, with Jason Holder and left-arm spinner Ashmead Nedd striking. Pooran wasn’t going to hang back, though. He thrashed Nedd for three sixes in his first five balls to wrest the momentum, and while Darren Bravo struggled at the other end, Pooran continued to charge. But even Pooran took a backseat when Pollard arrived. The allrounder smashed three sixes in a Navin Bidaisee over to get going. In the next over, he went after Waqar Salamkheil, pummelling him for four successive sixes to race to his fifty in 21 balls, which included eight sixes and no fours.Nicholas Pooran recorded a 38-ball 52•CPL T20/Getty ImagesBy the time Pollard fell, Knight Riders were closing in on 170. A five-run last over from Holder prevented TKR from breaching the 180-mark, but it was going to be an uphill task for Patriots.Evin Lewis and Andre Fletcher started briskly, adding 96 runs for the opening wicket in 10.4 overs. While Lewis scored a 25-ball 42, Fletcher scored 67 off 54 balls, but there were hardly any contributions from the rest of the batters after the two were dismissed.Amir got rid of Alick Athanaze and Holder, but limped off four balls into his fourth over – the 19th of this innings – clutching his groin and in visible pain. Edward, who had earlier dismissed Lewis, Kyle Mayers and Jyd Coolie, completed the over.Patriots required 27 off their last over and while offspinner Usman Tariq conceded a six off the first ball, he pulled things back as Knight Riders restricted Patriots to 167 for 6.

Revealed: Birmingham's revolutionary transfer plan that targets Champions League players and differs from world's top clubs as Blues chase Premier League return

Birmingham City are ripping up the transfer rulebook as they reportedly target Champions League players with the Blues chasing a Premier League return. Backed by the deep pockets of Knighthead Capital and the star power of NFL icon Tom Brady, the Blues are no longer thinking like a club fresh out of League One. Instead, they are daring to dream of mixing it with Europe’s elite within the next two to three seasons, and they’re building a plan to make it happen.

Carnall masterminds radical transfer strategy

According to at the heart of this revolution is Joe Carnall, the Blues’ head of recruitment. Promoted from his role as chief scout last season, Carnall is a self-confessed data obsessive who leans heavily on coding and analytics to shape the club’s transfer vision. His model isn’t about gambling on wonderkids who come good. Instead, Birmingham will only sanction deals for players with years of competitive experience behind them, no matter how much potential a younger prospect may appear to have.

AdvertisementGetty Images SportExperience over potential sets Birmingham apart

The shift in recruitment first took shape last season, when Birmingham’s transfer moves powered them to instant promotion back to the Championship. In an era where rivals stockpile teenagers with high resale value, Birmingham are swimming against the tide. The average age of their 14 new recruits this season, including loans, is 26.1. The philosophy is simple: pick players who can handle the pressure of a gruelling nine-month campaign, rather than prospects who might wilt under the spotlight. While rivals squabble over potential gems, Birmingham are quietly stockpiling seasoned campaigners they believe can fire them back into the top flight after 15 painful years away.

Barreiro and Stroeykens meetings raise eyebrows

The Blues have held talks with Benfica’s Leandro Barreiro, a midfielder with 13 Champions League appearances, and Anderlecht’s Mario Stroeykens, widely touted as one of Europe’s brightest midfield talents. While both players ultimately decided against dropping down to the Championship, the very fact that Birmingham got in the room with them is seen internally as proof that the project is gathering momentum.

One name that raised even more eyebrows was Emi Buendia. Not since Scott Hogan’s switch in 2020 has a player dared cross the Second City divide from Villa Park to St Andrew’s. Villa were never likely to sanction a cut-price deal, and Buendia opted to stay put. But with less than two years left on his contract, the Blues may test the waters again.

Wagner and Brady’s role behind the scenes

Chairman Tom Wagner and celebrity investor Brady have been painted as simply bankrolling a spending spree. However, insiders are quick to stress otherwise. Every deal has to pass Carnall’s stringent data filters before Wagner even gets involved. This isn’t about throwing cash around; it’s about targeted, strategic investments designed to fast-track Birmingham back among English football’s elite.

Smith Rowe starts & "animal" benched in predicted Arsenal lineup vs Liverpool

It's crunch time for Arsenal on Sunday, with the Gunners taking on rivals Liverpool in what could prove to be a pivotal showdown in the Premier League title race, with just five points currently separating the two sides in third and first, respectively.

While imperious champions Manchester City are also firmly in the mix and with a game in hand on the two teams either side of them, a win tomorrow would help to lay down a marker for either the north Londoners or the Anfield outfit amid their own pursuit of glory.

The recent announcement of Jurgen Klopp's impending departure from the Merseysiders has likely only heightened their desire for the German to go out with a bang at the end of the season, although those at the Emirates can help to spoil the party by picking up a positive result on home soil.

Having now won their last two games since losing to Klopp and co in the FA Cup at the start of January, there could well be just one change made by Mikel Arteta from the side that saw off Nottingham Forest in midweek.

1 GK – David Raya

There have been shaky moments for David Raya this season – including his two notable errors away to Luton Town back in December – although the Spaniard appears to be truly finding his feet in an Arsenal shirt, having produced 'one of his best performances' in the 5-0 win over Crystal Palace, as per the Standard's Simon Collings.

While Aaron Ramsdale will be chomping at the bit to get back into the side, there would be no rhyme or reason for Arteta to usurp the Brentford loanee.

2 RB – Ben White

The major talking point may have been the Englishman's post-match row with teammate Oleksandr Zinchenko in midweek, although prior to that it had been another smooth outing for the former Brighton and Hove Albion man.

The 26-year-old notably enjoyed an 88% pass accuracy rate and provided one key pass against the Tricky Trees, although will now face a far tougher test up against the lively Luis Diaz.

3 CB – William Saliba

The towering Frenchman could have perhaps done better to prevent Taiwo Awoniyi from firing home amid a nervy climax at the City Ground, yet that was a rare blip in an otherwise "exceptional" spell in north London to date – as lauded by his manager.

If the Gunners are to keep a frontline that has scored 14 goals across their last four games quiet, they will need Saliba to be at his brilliant best.

4 CB – Gabriel

The surprise goalscorer in the reverse fixture at Anfield, Gabriel has 'quietly been one of Arsenal's better players this season' – according to Collings – shaking off summer reports that he looked set for an exit.

Although it is his centre-back partner who usually gets most of the plaudits, the Brazilian brute is seemingly just as important to a backline that has shipped just 21 league goals thus far – the second-best record in the division.

5 LB – Oleksandr Zinchenko

The Ukrainian ace won't have fond memories of this fixture having been branded a "liability" by pundit Gary Neville during the 1-1 draw back in December, yet with Takehiro Tomiyasu still at the Asian Cup and Jurrien Timber still edging his way back to fitness, he'll simply have to start once again.

6 CDM – Declan Rice

joshua-kimmich-declan-rice-liverpool

It came as no real shock when Arteta confirmed in his pre-match press conference that Thomas Partey had endured a "setback" in his recovery from injury, with that news ensuring that Declan Rice will once again operate in that deep-lying midfield berth.

Although there has been a clamour to see the former West Ham United skipper unleashed in a more advanced number eight role, he has previously outlined his preference for operating as the six, and will be looking to make another big impact in that position tomorrow.

Arsenal may already have their own Onana in Hale End sensation

The failure to land the Everton star could be the catalyst for Arsenal to unleash one of Hale End’s most exciting talents

ByJack Salveson Holmes Feb 2, 2024

A previous match winner in a crunch clash with Manchester United at the Emirates, could the 25-year-old replicate such heroics against Klopp's men?

7 CM – Martin Odegaard

The Gunners skipper has only recorded victory once in his career against tomorrow's opponents – while also failing to score in those eight meetings – yet he could be instrumental in changing those fortunes and helping to maintain his side's title charge.

Now without a goal or an assist in his last four league games, the Norwegian maestro needs to step up on the big stage on Sunday.

8 CM – Emile Smith Rowe

Aston Villa transfer target Emile Smith-Rowe in action for Arsenal.

Having 'looked sharp' against Forest last time out – as per Collings – Emile Smith Rowe could be deserving of another chance to shine from the start this time around, ahead of summer signing Kai Havertz.

Despite being the subject of interest from West Ham last month, the 23-year-old playmaker could now have a central role to play for the Gunners over the coming months.

9 RW – Bukayo Saka

johan-bakayoko-bukayo-saka-tottenham-opinion

Another Hale End graduate, Bukayo Saka has begun to hit form again after providing three goals and assists across his last league games, netting what proved to be the decisive goal in Nottingham.

That ensures that the Englishman has now already reached double figures for both goals and assists in all competitions this season, continuing his sparkling rise in an Arsenal shirt.

10 ST – Gabriel Jesus

There were no doubt concerns when Gabriel Jesus limped off in midweek, although having trained with the squad all week, the fleet-footed Brazilian should be fit to feature tomorrow.

With no new striker coming in the door, the Gunners' number nine – who kicked things off against Forest after prodding through the legs of former teammate, Matt Turner – will need to find a clinical edge if the club's long wait for Premier League glory is to come to an end.
