Green cuts loose after Peschel and King lead the way with the ball

Perth Scorchers cruised to their second win in two games to make a strong start to their title defence

AAP17-Oct-2022Defending WBBL champions Perth Scorchers notched back-to-back wins to begin their campaign, beating the Hobart Hurricanes by eight wickets at Blacktown in Sydney.Scorchers restricted Hurricanes to 9 for 109 after winning the toss on Monday night, cruising past the total with almost five overs to spare.Perth seamer Taneale Peschel picked up a career-best 3 for 13 from four overs, including the scalps of opener Lizelle Lee and Nicola Carey plus Molly Strano.Legspinner Alana King, who opened the bowling, took 3 for 15, backing up her 2 for 17 from Sunday’s nine-wicket win over Sydney Thunder.King took the big wicket of Elyse Villani with her sixth ball, lbw sweeping, to set the tone and returned to remove Mignon du Preez and Naomi Stalenberg later in the innings.  Heather Graham top scored for Hobart with 35 from 28 balls, which included her side’s only two sixes.Hurricanes defended 125 for victory in their season opener against the Thunder but couldn’t manage a similar effort.Beth Mooney showed her experience with an unbeaten 38. She shared a 54-run partnership for the second wicket with Chloe Piparo, who hit 31 from 26 balls. Maddy Green freed the arms late in the piece to finish with 32 from 16 balls, including seven boundaries.

Slot needs to sell Liverpool "problem" who earns more than Gakpo & Diaz

It’s a fool’s notion to claim that a football team, however well they are playing, are bankers for a title before reaching the midpoint of a campaign.

However, Liverpool fans should rightly celebrate the way in which Arne Slot has taken to life in Jurgen Klopp’s old chair. While things are going well for the Reds at the moment, a lot can change in the business months of the season.

Liverpool head coach Arne Slot

But Liverpool should still stand proud as one of the most exciting and impressive clubs of the 2024/25 campaign so far, top of the Premier League and Champions League tables and firing on all cylinders, with the defence imperious, the midfield industrious and the attack deliciously potent.

Most of the attack, anyway…

Liverpool's frontline in 2024/25

Obviously, Liverpool’s attacking success leans heavily into one third of the frontline, with Mohamed Salah currently riding the crest of one of the biggest waves of his career – and there have been many, many waves.

With Cody Gakpo and Luis Diaz both principally playing at left wing this term, rotating, it’s rather concerning that Liverpool’s central striking position is the area most notably lacking in goals.

To his defence, Diogo Jota has been injured for the past few months and bagged four goals from just nine starts beforehand, but Darwin Nunez has now played plenty of football under Slot’s wing and is yet to prove himself as a high-class focal frontman, even if he has some neat attributes.

Why Darwin Nunez could still succeed at Liverpool

It’s beginning to feel like Nunez will never be the kind of assured goalscoring presence that Manchester City’s Erling Haaland is, but that’s okay.

Darwin Nunez for Liverpool

He’s still got a wealth of qualities that make for a high-class footballer, it’s just whether Liverpool can continue to operate with him as their central talisman, especially if Salah leaves at the end of the season, meaning that the need for goals from other areas will be heightened.

This season, for example, Nunez might have only posted three goals and two assists across 19 outings, but he’s also succeeding with a Liverpool-career-high 55% of his dribbles in the Premier League, as per Sofascore, while also winning more duels on average than across either of his first two seasons.

For all his issues, Nunez still manages to provide some underlying data that speaks of his capacity for a brighter future, ranking among the top 4% of forwards across Europe’s top five leagues over the past year for shots taken, the top 4% for touches in the attacking penalty area, the top 17% for progressive carries and the top 6% for tackles, as per FBref.

But is this enough? As per The Athletic’s James Pearce, it’s possible that Slot prioritises the signing of a new striker in the coming windows, for Nunez, talented as they come, can’t seem to harness and focus his own quality.

Darwin Nunez for Liverpool

To be honest, it might be that the Uruguayan needs to be sold, with suitors sure to circle from various circles of the footballing world. Reading between the lines, it feels like Slot wouldn’t be wholly against the idea, were the right offer to arrive.

Why Slot should sell Darwin Nunez

Nunez is certainly a divisive member of the Liverpool squad. Many fans adore the 25-year-old for his work rate, personality and multi-dimensionality in attack, but others are frustrated by an unending search for consistency in front of goal.

Liverpool striker Darwin Nunez

Unfortunately, unless Nunez showcases a whole new level of potency and consistency at the front of the Liverpool line-up, it’s going to be hard for him to stake a claim for a fourth successive term at the club as the designated number one at number nine.

Some might claim that Nunez requires a certain system to flourish, operating as the spearhead of a frenetic, high-intensity line that allows him to capitalise and rise chaotic phases, but Klopp and now Slot have both tried to bring the best out of the Uruguayan, who has failed to hit the desired heights on both accounts.

Last season, Liverpool-focused writer Sam McGuire called the South American a bit of a “problem” within the Merseyside squad, and for all his ability, if he can’t finish his dinner, then it is indeed an issue going forward.

Especially when considering that Gakpo and Diaz both earn less than him, with the former on £120k-per-week and Diaz taking home just £55k-per-week, as per reports. Nunez, meanwhile, rakes in a reported £140k-per-week.

Both wingers have enjoyed a rich vein of form this season and they are jockeying with each other for a starting berth on the left flank, though that is to the detriment of neither, which makes an interesting comment on the regard that Liverpool fans have for the respective stars.

Nunez, conversely, feels like he’s only occupying the striker’s position because Jota has been sidelined with an injury.

Slot featured the Portugal international prominently throughout the opening months of the campaign and you’d wager that he will do so again once he has returned to full fitness.

Jota has returned to training as he strives to hit full match fitness in the coming weeks. Nunez will be eyeing the forthcoming Premier League fixture at home to Fulham, who are missing key defenders through injury, with an air of suppressed desperation.

He knows that an upswing is needed quickly if he is to finally reach the heights that Klopp envisaged when bringing him to Merseyside for a record fee.

'It's not so easy for him' – Thomas Tuchel sends public message to Harry Maguire as reasons for England snub are revealed

England boss Thomas Tuchel has explained why he did not call up Harry Maguire for this month's World Cup qualifiers.

Maguire left out by TuchelGerman manager concerned with fitnessInsists Man Utd centre-back remains "very important"Follow GOAL on WhatsApp! 🟢📱WHAT HAPPENED?

Tuchel selected Ezri Konsa, Marc Guehi, and Levi Colwill, along with uncapped duo Dan Burn and Jarell Quansah for this month's fixtures against Albania and Latvia. Maguire did not make the cut, with the head coach now providing an explanation that his decision was a difficult one and primarily influenced by recent injury struggles.

AdvertisementWHAT TUCHEL SAID

"I spoke to all of them who were not on the list to give my direct feedback on my decision," Tuchel told reporters. "It was a close decision. We chose Marc Guehi and Ezri Konsa at the moment. I think they are a little bit in a better rhythm and deserve to be with us. Two right-footers in central defence and the rest were left footers in the centre of defence."

Tuchel explained that he was unwilling to take the risk of calling up a player who was not fully fit and added: "He [Maguire] was not fit when we did the nomination. It was presumed that he could play but we didn’t want to nominate a player with whom we had to take a risk, and in the first training or second training and constantly need to assess whether he can do a full training session or half training session. We did the same with Reece James and only because of the feedback that he could do every session full was the reason we brought him into camp."

Tuchel also acknowledged that Maguire’s club situation at Manchester United hasn’t been ideal, as he has often been deployed in a back-three system rather than his preferred role in a back-four. However, the England boss remains confident that the defender will continue to be in contention for future squads.

"Harry knows that. It's not so easy for him at the club at the moment," he added. "He plays in a back three on top of it, but he’s a top professional and he’s very important for England. He took it unbelievably well. He wrote me messages to wish us good luck and you see what a person he is. He is a top guy and he will always be in contention."

GettyWHAT NEXT FOR TUCHEL?

With Maguire still in his plans, Tuchel left the door open for the defender’s return in the coming months, provided he regains full fitness and consistent playing time at United. The German has made a strong start to his tenure as England manager, guiding the team to successive wins against Albania and Latvia in World Cup qualifying matches at Wembley. His next challenges will be an away World Cup qualifier against Andorra, followed by a friendly against Senegal at Nottingham Forest’s City Ground on June 7 and June 10 respectively.

West Ham approach Julen Lopetegui replacement who worked under Jurgen Klopp

West Ham United chiefs have approached a trophy-winning manager over potentially replacing Julen Lopetegui in the London Stadium hot seat, with the man in question learning from one of the very best in ex-Liverpool boss Jürgen Klopp.

Lopetegui under pressure at West Ham as club look at successors

Three wins from just 11 Premier League games is objectively a poor return, especially after their summer expenditure of over £120 million on nine major signings.

The Hammers really need an extra body in his position.

ByEmilio Galantini Nov 22, 2024

Lopetegui’s West Ham have appeared lacklustre and uninspired on the field – branded a “complete mess” by some members of the media – which is far from what David Sullivan was hoping for after ex-head coach David Moyes drew the curtain on his memorable five-year stay at the helm.

This situation is said to be quite “volatile” behind the scenes in east London, with well-connected former West Ham scout Mick Brown recently suggesting that Lopetegui is walking a tightrope.

“The situation at West Ham is very volatile,” he told Football Insider.

“He could lose his job and be sacked immediately, at any time, things can change with the click of a finger. I’m not sure how good the relationship between the manager, the sporting director, and the owner is, but at the start of the season, I know it wasn’t good.

“They bought a lot of players for him and not many of them have turned up yet. That’s only put more pressure on him because if they spend big money, they want to see returns.

“From what I’ve heard, they were keen to give him time at first, but that faith is fading quickly.”

According to recent reports, the likes of Sergio Conceicao, Sebastien Hoeness, Maurizio Sarri, Roger Schmidt and Kasper Hjulmand stand out as managers linked with the West Ham job, if they do decide to part company with Lopetegui.

West Ham sound out Edin Terzić to replace Lopetegui

According to talkSPORT, former West Ham backroom coach and ex-Borussia Dortmund boss Edin Terzić remains in the frame as well.

Borussia Dortmund manager Edin Terzic

The 42-year-old, who worked under Jürgen Klopp at Dortmund once upon a time, is out of work after leaving Dortmund – most recently guiding them to a surprise Champions League final against Real Madrid earlier this year.

He also won two domestic German trophies during his time at Signal Iduna Park, and his accomplishments in the Bundesliga haven’t gone unnoticed.

It is believed West Ham have sounded out Terzic over potentially replacing Lopetegui, with Sullivan and Steidten preparing for the “eventuality” that they could have to sack their current boss.

On the road again. Well, almost. There’s a new Indian consul general in town who wants some new and different things from South Africans applying to travel to his country. Among those things is absolute proof of living and working in South Africa, for fear you may never return. All of this is only revealed while waiting anxiously in the visa office the day of the departure flight. Frantic communication ensues, but in the end, crisis averted. All aboard. The first day of long-form cricket has arrived. And how. The open press box at Brabourne allows me to soak it all in. It’s unusually hot for this time of the year, with temperatures close to 40 degrees, and high humidity, but it’s wonderful. Mohali-bound for the serious stuff. My only experience of Chandigarh was during the 2011 World Cup, when South Africa played Netherlands. It looks different when hosting a Test match: quieter, cosier, and at this time of year, cooler. There’s not much happening with neither team training, so get some work done and meet up with another colleague, Sidharth Monga, that evening. He introduces me to Uber, which I am embarrassed to admit I had never used before. It is to become one of my best friends over the next week.November 2
Get a first look at Mohali’s much talked about pitch, and on first glance it looks green. Looks can be entirely deceiving. He is proved right.November 3
Determined to see a bit more of India than airports, hotels and cricket teams, I have booked a cycle tour of Chandigarh for the morning. As a commuter cyclist back home, I am confident I will be able to cope, and I am not far wrong. Despite an unfamiliar bicycle and unfamiliar routes, I stay on. And I see the city. Among the stops are the Rose Garden (not in bloom at this time of year), the war memorial, the Rock Garden (not open at times when I might have visited), and the Sukhna Lake. Can’t help but feel Chandigarh is quite a strange place because it is planned. What was the plan supposed to achieve? I conclude it must be equality. Every sector has a park, a market, a residential area. It’s a nice idea.At South Africa’s open media session, Dale Steyn offers a completely different perspective about bowling on the subcontinent. There are five puppies in the park close to the PCA Stadium which I decided to use as my running route. They seem about eight weeks old, with bounce and faint barks. They try to jog alongside me but only last a few metres before they are distracted and bound off. I finish my laps and stop to play with them. They enjoy the attention and I enjoy the interaction.I have decided to become a vegetarian for this trip in order to explore different cuisines. Someone has recommended Whistling Duck as place to eat at in Chandigarh. Dinner there does not disappoint.November 5
Ah, that Test match feeling. This is the start of a big summer for South Africa. Eight Test matches are the most they have played back to back in the same season since I started covering cricket, and I am excited about the prospect. Not too many people in Mohali seem to be, though. The crowd is much thinner than I expected on day one, although someone suggested it was a record low. They make up for their size with sound, singing “Happy Birthday” to Virat Kohli even as he fails with the bat. It’s a happier day for Dean Elgar, who proves innocuous no more, and for me when I discover at lunchtime that the food at the PCA is as good as it was during the World Cup. The tandoori ovens are still on the terrace, churning out fresh rotis. A ground after my own heart.November 6
Only three of the five puppies are in the park this morning. I spend most of my run scanning the surrounds for the other two. I don’t want to think about where they might be.The fast-forward action in the Test takes my mind off them, as South Africa are bowled out and more than half the match is over inside two days. But then India strengthen their position and it seems the game is only headed one way.November 7
True to their reputation of being cricket’s best travellers, South Africa fight back. Their bowlers give them a fighting chance of winning the first Test, though they will have to score the highest total of the match to do so. They don’t. The match ends with the crowd sounding like a full house. On my walk back to the hotel, I notice how alive Mohali seems. The roadside cooks are selling everything from sugar-cane juice to snacks. I stop to take pictures and admire the entrepreneurial spirit. Can’t really believe one Test is already over. It still feels like this tour has barely begun.November 8
All five puppies are back in the park again. Relief. I say my goodbyes, wishing I could take them home with me. I’m not sure what Doosra, my cat, would think of that.Fancy a cuppa (or a thousand)?•Firdose Moonda/ESPNcricinfo LtdTime off is a myth in the life of a journalist but I may actually get some. On a whim, I decide to investigate the possibility of a day trip to Amritsar to see the Golden Temple. Against all odds, manage to get a trip to Amritsar organised with a convenient and cheap taxi by the same people who did the cycle tour. Arrive in the Holy City and am amazed at how busy it is. Diwali is in two days’ time and it seems everyone is shopping. Those who aren’t are praying at the Golden Temple. It is a breathtaking sight. The structure is mirrored in the water beneath it and the colours reflect as rainbows.I am just as awestruck at the community kitchen inside the temple, which is the largest of its kind in the world. Hundreds of volunteers do everything from peeling vegetables to stirring the biggest pots of tea I have ever seen. Two different kinds of in the kitchen – machine-manufactured and handmade – both equally delicious-smelling. At this time of year it feels like the lungs, stomach, kidneys and everything else as well. We have tea at a 100-year old tea shop, munch on and admire the Diwali lights. Back in Chandigarh cricket is far from the mind. It’s a topic that will be tackled tomorrow.

Dario Essugo: Why Chelsea have forked out £18m for Sporting CP midfield workhorse who surpassed Luis Figo

The Portuguese ace has joined Geovany Quenda in pledging his future to the Blues, and is already being lined up for a key role under Enzo Maresca

Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital are at it again! Chelsea's ambitious owners have invested well over £1 billion in strengthening the first-team squad since their arrival in 2022, with the scouting department working tirelessly to identify and capture potential superstars from across the globe.

Tangible success has yet to materialise, but the Blues have had no trouble getting promising youngsters to buy into their long-term project by offering incentive-based contracts that provide security their rivals cannot. Geovany Quenda and Dario Essugo are the latest pair to take on the challenge, having made a name for themselves with Sporting CP.

Chelsea have snapped up the Portuguese duo for a combined fee of £62 million ($803m) after reaching an agreement with Sporting that will see Essugo move to Stamford Bridge in the summer before Quenda follows at the end of the 2025-26 season. But one of them has been generating far more hype than the other.

Quenda broke into Sporting's senior team under current Manchester United coach Ruben Amorim, and has quickly established himself as a key player at just 17, drawing comparisons with a certain Cristiano Ronaldo. The talented young winger has already been called up to the Portugal squad, too, which explains why he accounts for £42m ($18m) of Chelsea's outlay.

In stark contrast, 20-year-old Essugo is leaving Sporting with only 25 appearances under his belt across the last four years. He's very much the B-side in this double deal, but that doesn't mean he won't be a big asset for Chelsea. In fact, Essugo could end up being one of the bargains of the century at £18m ($23m) – and GOAL is on hand to explain why…

Where it all began

Essugo was born in Odivelas, Lisbon in March 2005, and took his first steps into the football world at local club UDR Santa Maria. Sporting recognised his potential after he turned nine, drafting him into their famed Alcochete academy.

Despite intense competition, Essugo rose through the ranks at a rapid rate, and eventually caught the eye of Amorim, who made the bold decision to fast-track the midfielder's development before he had even appeared for Sporting's U23s. On March 20, 2021, Essugo stepped off the bench in a 1-0 league win against Vitoria de Guimaraes, surpassing Luis Figo as the the youngest debutant in Sporting's history at 16 years and six days old.

The magnitude of the achievement was not lost on Essugo, who was consoled by several team-mates after bursting into tears on the final whistle. “It is an indescribable sensation, in which I always breathed in and always dreamed, I have to thank everyone," he told reporters after composing himself. "It is only the beginning, to continue working and helping the club to achieve its goals. It is different to be playing at a senior level. They supported me and I was even more relaxed."

AdvertisementThe big break

Essugo did not feature for the first team again in 2020-21, and opportunities were scarce the following season. However, the teenager became the youngest Portuguese player to appear in the Champions League when he came on in Sporting's group-stage loss to Ajax, and surpassed Figo in the record books again when he made his first start for the club in a 2-0 Primeira Liga victory over Arouca in March 2022.

The big breakthrough came on the international stage, though, as Essugo was named in Portugal's squad for the U17 European Championship that summer. Essugo was ever-present as the Seleccao embarked on a run to the semi-finals, eventually losing to France on penalties.

It was a heart-breaking moment for Essugo, but Portugal wouldn't have even made it for a shootout had it not been for him. The Sporting starlet had actually put his country 2-1 up in normal time, and in truly spectacular fashion, rifling the ball into the top corner of the net with an amazing strike from 40 yards out.

Essugo is by no means a goal-scorer, but Chelsea fans will be pleased to know he has that in his locker. Amorim was certainly impressed at the time, and over the next two seasons, Essugo featured more regularly in the Sporting senior team.

Getty ImagesHow it's going

However, by the mid-way point of the 2023-24 campaign, Essugo had still not established himself as a nailed-on starter under Amorim, and Sporting decided a loan spell would be best for his development. He joined relegation-threatened Chaves on on a six-month loan deal, which allowed him to play first-team football week in, week out.

Essugo impressed in his 14 appearances for Chaves, but they still dropped into the second tier, and ulitmately couldn't afford to keep the youngster. The perfect consolation prize was waiting for Essugo upon his return to Sporting, though, as he received a Primeira Liga winner's medal after Amorim's second title success.

Unfortunately, there would be no role for the youngster in Sporting's defence of that crown. He was loaned out again, this time to La Liga outfit Las Palmas as he swapped the comforts of his homeland for a new challenge abroad. "I have good prospects. I'm in a new phase, so far from home, everything is different," Essugo said at his unveiling. "I know it will be good for my growth, I know I'll achieve good things here. The Portuguese league is very good, but here it will be better for my growth. It will help me improve and will highlight my strongest points."

That prediction has proven to be correct, for the most part. As per , only five midfielders to have played over 900 minutes in La Liga this season can better Essugo's interceptions per game total of 1.9, and his technical proficiency has shone through. But Essugo's worst point has also been highlighted.

He's been sent off twice in a Las Palmas shirt, including in a 1-1 draw against Osasuna in January. After committing two bookable offences, Essugo was in line for a one-match ban, but that was upgraded to three because he sarcastically applauded the referee on his way off the pitch.

Essugo is also now in serious danger of suffering relegation for the second successive year, as Las Palmas sit 19th in La Liga and three points from safety with just 11 games to play. Overall, though, the good has outweighed the bad. Essugo is still very much a raw talent, but he's gradually becoming an accomplished all-rounder, which is why Chelsea have taken a calculated gamble.

Getty Images SportBiggest strengths

Essugo was asked to describe his style of play after joining Las Palmas, and replied: “I like to steal the ball and move forward. I can provide defensive security; that’s what I want, to help achieve the team’s goals.” The club may fall short of their main goal, La Liga survival, but Essugo has delivered on that brief.

He's a physically imposing holding midfielder who loves to get stuck in and reads the game very well despite his lack of top-level experience. Las Palmas would have been cut adrift at the bottom long ago had it not been for Essugo's ability to break up play, and he's also improved from an attacking perspective in Spain.

Essugo is a progressive dribbler who is not afraid to receive the ball in tight spaces, and his passing range is exceptional. Las Palmas can rely on Essugo to break through the lines and switch play whenever the opportunity arises; he's brave on the ball when others take the easy option, which is why he's seen as one of the leaders in Diego Martinez's squad.

Suryakumar – ‘I’ve told the captain and coaches I’ll play anywhere, just play me’

Virat Kohli was “completely blown away” by the innings Suryakumar Yadav played against Hong Kong on Wednesday, saying that he “changed the momentum of the game on a pitch that wasn’t as easy as he made it look.”Kohli and Suryakumar scored contrasting half-centuries during an unbroken partnership of 98 off 42 balls for the third wicket. And it was only after Suryakumar came in with seven overs to go that India were able to accelerate and post a total of 192 for 2 in Dubai.”SKY played an outstanding knock, a knock that I enjoyed thoroughly from the other end,” Kohli said during a conversation with Suryakumar for BCCI.tv. “I’ve seen so many innings when we play in the IPL [against each other], or that being done to other teams, but this was my first experience of watching very closely. I was completely blown away. I honestly believe that the way you played today, if you can stay in that zone, you can literally change the complexion of the game against any team in the world.”Related

Suryakumar Yadav and Virat Kohli: one flies as the other fights

India’s innings was a tale of two halves. In the first, KL Rahul scored only 36 off 39 balls, his slowest T20I innings in which he’s faced at least 30 deliveries, and while Kohli was not as rusty, he had to fight hard for his runs.Kohli was on 33 when Suryakumar joined him in the middle and swept his first two balls to the deep square-leg boundary. He hit four fours and a six in his first ten deliveries to set the tone for a masterclass in 360-degree batting.”When I was sitting inside, me and Rishabh [Pant] were speaking about how we could take game this ahead as the wicket was a little slow,” Suryakumar said. “When I went into bat, I tried to just be myself and do what I love doing. It was a really simple plan: taking the first 10 balls, I wanted to hit three-four boundaries and when I got that, I just kept batting.”

Suryakumar played scoops, sweeps, flicks and hit two stunning sixes over point to bring up his half-century off just 22 balls – his fastest in T20 internationals. He struck four sixes in the final over to finish unbeaten on 68 off 26 balls, while Kohli remained not out on 59 off 44. India scored 78 off the last five overs.”At that moment, I knew I needed you there,” Suryakumar said to Kohli. “That’s why I told you that you just bat from one end, it’ll be easy to cover up because I’ve seen you a lot of times, when you take 30-35 balls, the next 10 balls you bat with a strike rate of 200-250. It was important for me that you stay there so that I bat freely until the 20th over. And the same thing happened. I really enjoyed it.”After coming back from a 42-day break, Kohli reiterated how “mentally fresh” he was feeling at the moment. He had returned with an innings of 35 off 34 balls against Pakistan, and though his half-century against Hong Kong wasn’t the most fluent innings, Kohli was able to accelerate at the end.”My plan was simple, like in the last game,” Kohli said. “I’ve come off a decent break, month and a half. Six weeks is a long time, especially at the international level when you get out of touch with the game, but I came mentally fresh. So I really enjoyed myself in the last game as well, against a quality attack. I kind of got the pace of the wicket, but I knew my job was to stabilise the innings and build a partnership with whoever I play with. And in between when the situation allows me to, take a risk and find a boundary every now and then.”But again, when you [Suryakumar] came in, I told you I’m going to keep going but the moment you started and gave me a clear indication of how you’re feeling, my role immediately changed to holding one end. As you said, you could go out and express yourself almost every ball. That is something I enjoy doing, so that even if god forbid you didn’t get those runs, then I could take charge, or we have Rishabh [Pant] or in another game Hardik [Pandya], Dinesh [Karthik] or [Ravindra Jadeja] Jaddu.”It was just applying whatever knowledge I have accumulated over the years for the benefit of the team. It was nice to get a couple of games where I felt good with my batting. For me, milestones and number of runs are irrelevant, it’s how you feel when you bat, and I felt very good.”With wins in both their matches, India are the first team from Group A to qualify for the Super 4 stage of the Asia Cup.

Which was the innings of the English summer?

Match-winning or not, a hundred or not, seven Tests and ten ODIs later, spread across four months, which innings would you pick as the best of the summer?

New Zealand demolished England’s top order on the first day of the summer to leave them reeling at 30 for 4. That, however, did not bother Joe Root. Even though he fell two short of a hundred, his 98 was enough to lead a middle-order revival and spur England to a fighting 389.Alastair Cook’s 162 v New Zealand, 1st Test, Lord’s
With England trailing by 134 runs in the first innings, Alastair Cook turned things around with his 162 to set New Zealand a daunting target of 345, which was enough to start the season on a winning note.Ben Stokes’ 101 v New Zealand, 1st Test, Lord’s
New Zealand took a hefty first-innings lead and Alastair Cook replies with a hundred. Then Ben Stokes came out at No. 6 to counter-attack with an 85-ball hundred, the second-fastest in Tests by an England batsman, before he took three wickets as the home pacers dismissed New Zealand for 220.BJ Watling’s 120 v England, 2nd Test, Headingley
Both teams produced the same score in the first innings – 350. The match was in balance with New Zealand on 141 for 4 before BJ Watling’s hundred, despite a knee injury that didn’t allow him to keep wickets, ensured New Zealand levelled the series to maintain their two-year unbeaten run in Test series.Joe Root’s 134 v Australia, 1st Test, Cardiff
England were in a bit of bother at 43 for 3 with Adam Lyth, Cook and Ian Bell back in the pavilion. Joe Root put the pressure back on Australia with his seventh Test hundred to lay the platform for a total of 430.Steven Smith’s 215 v England, 2nd Test, Lord’s
Steven Smith’s maiden double-hundred helped Australia amass 566 for 8 declared, which included a 284-run stand with Chris Rogers, who made 173. It set up a thumping 405-run win, helping Australia level the series 1-1.ODIsJoe Root scored two defining hundreds against New Zealand•Getty ImagesJos Buttler’s 129 v New Zealand, 1st ODI, Edgbaston
It is the ‘New England’ everyone was talking about as they raced to 408 in 50 overs, mainly on the back of Jos Buttler’s 129 off 77 balls, an innings that featured 13 fours and five sixes. His hundred came off just 66 balls.Joe Root’s 104 v New Zealand, 1st ODI, Edgbaston
The path for Buttler’s hundred was carved by Joe Root at No. 3, after England lost their openers to a menacing Trent Boult. A magnificent hundred from Root, off 71 balls, gave his side a new dimension with the bat in ODIs, as it helped them score 400 for the first time.Ross Taylor’s 119* v England, 2nd ODI, The Oval
After being hammered in the first ODI, New Zealand bounced back in the second, led by Taylor’s unbeaten century. The famous Taylor slog-sweep was on show as he muscled New Zealand to 398, a total they just about managed to defend.Eoin Morgan’s 113 v New Zealand, 4th ODI, Trent Bridge
An inexperienced England bowling attack could not stop New Zealand from posting a massive 349 before Eoin Morgan’s quickfire hundred – 113 off 82 – led them home with as many as six overs to spare. He had four scores of 50-plus in the series, the first by any England captain.Joe Root’s 106* v New Zealand, 4th ODI, Trent Bridge
That successful and record chase of 350 was possible also because of Joe Root’s unbeaten 106 off 97, an innings of finesse under pressure to lead England to their fourth consecutive score of 300-plus.Matthew Wade 71* v England, 1st ODI, Southampton
In the 37th over, Wade made a bad call that resulted in Shane Watson’s run-out and left Australia at 193 for 6. Wade made up for the error, though, as he pummelled an unbeaten 71 off 50 to lift Australia beyond 300 and also make his case for being the long-term successor to Brad Haddin.Eoin Morgan’s 92 v Australia, 4th ODI, Headingley
England had never chased a target of 300 or more against Australia, but a composed run-a-ball 92 from their captain anchored their innings. He couldn’t guide his team to the finish thanks to a screamer from Glenn Maxwell, but the lower middle-order managed to complete the chase.

City fell to a narrow defeat at Forest on Saturday in the Premier League and after the match, defender Dias claimed the dry playing surface made things "more difficult" for his side. This follows less than a week after manager Pep Guardiola said the ball used in their FA Cup win over Plymouth Argyle was "not right".

The Portugal international said: "With the pitch dry it makes things a bit more difficult. It was [the same] last season and at Fulham too. It depends on the weather as well and goodwill from everyone to make the game fast."

THE BIGGER PICTURE

City are on course to have their worst season in years. They are out of the Champions League and Carabao Cup, have no chance of defending their Premier League title, and now their excuses are mounting as well.

London club approach Chelsea to sign £62m ace in "transformative deal"

A London-based club have now approached Chelsea over signing one of their most expensive players in what could be a potentially “transformative deal”.

Players tipped to leave Chelsea in 2025

There are a few near-certain exits from Stamford Bridge which are expected to take place after the turn of the year.

The two most likely players to depart Enzo Maresca’s side, as per reports in the last few weeks, are left-back Ben Chilwell and midfielder Carney Chukwuemeka – who have both been deemed surplus to requirements by the Italian.

Chilwell and Chukwuemeka have both played under an hour in total across all competitions, with Chelsea ready to cut their losses on the pair as January looms.

Chelsea are encouraging teams to move for Chilwell, who is attracting interest from the Premier League, La Liga and Serie A, while reliable journalist Simon Phillips reported this week that Ipswich Town have made an enquiry over signing Chukwuemeka in January.

“Ipswich Town are showing a keen interest in signing Chelsea midfielder Carney Chukwuemeka,” wrote Phillips.

“In fact, we have heard that they have already made an enquiry about the player’s availability for January. Chukwuemeka wants to play football, so he will listen to any approaches now. He had approaches in the summer but ideally wanted to stay in England, and again, ideally in London.

Carney Chukwuemeka

“AC Milan and Barcelona have also both expressed an interest in the Blues midfielder. Chelsea will sell him for the right price, and they might even consider a loan to buy deal in January that will see the player leave in the summer.

“Sources are unsure at this point the nature of the enquiry from Ipswich, whether it is a loan or a permanent approach, because it is just an initial enquiry to see if the player is available in January, which he will be. But I’d suspect it would be some sort of loan to buy deal for now. Chelsea will listen.”

Other players linked with the exit door including Christopher Nkunku. The Frenchman is attracting rumoured interest from Man United, and it is believed Nkunku is tempted by the possibility of making an Old Trafford move (Football Insider).

Palace approach Chelsea over signing Mykhailo Mudryk

Despite his use in cup competitions and some impressive showings as of late, reports continue to link Mykhailo Mudryk with a January exit as well.

The Ukranian, signed for an initial £62 million, has failed to justify that price tag so far and faces stiff competition for a consistent place in Chelsea’s attacking line-up.

Football Transfers write Palace have approached Chelsea over signing Mudryk on loan in the winter, which could be a potentially “transformative deal” for Glasner’s side as they look to climb up the Premier League table.

The 23-year-old dazzled at Shakhtar Donetsk before making the switch to Stamford Bridge, and has displayed his ability on the odd occasion, but BlueCo will be very keen for him to kick on and perhaps a temporary move elsewhere could be best for him.
